No. 4 seed Alabama basketball had no issues in taking down 13-seed College of Charleston in the first round of March Madness. The Crimson Tide did manage to give up 96 points, which should present some worries regarding the defense, the offense put up a whopping 109 points.

Mark Sears was, once again, the star of the show as he put up a total of 30 points of his own.

Now, the Crimson Tide takes on No. 12 seed Grand Canyon, which upset the No. 5 St. Mary’s squad. This will be an interesting matchup as the pace of play between both teams could cause some hiccups for both rosters.

Before looking ahead, relive the excitement from the Crimson Tide’s win over the College of Charleston with the top images from the game.

Alabama advances to Round of 32 after high-scoring win over Charleston

Alabama basketball advances to the second round of March Madness after a statement win in the Round of 64 over 13-seed College of Charleston.

Two high-powered offenses took the court in Spokane, Washington, but only one earned the opportunity to advance. After putting up triple digits over No. 13 seed College of Charleston, No. 4 seed Alabama moves on to the Round of 32. The final score was 109-96, advantage Crimson Tide.

The Crimson Tide will now face the winner of No. 5 St. Mary’s and No. 12 Grand Canyon in the second round of the tournament.

Though the game started a little slow for the Tide, the offense got to work and never let up once the scoring party got started. Charleston had a slight lead early in the first half, but couldn’t stick around for too long. It was all Alabama for the majority of the contest.

Alabama advances with ease, but is the only team from the Yellowhammer State to win its opening matchup. Auburn, Samford and UAB all fell to their opponents.

Mark Sears led the team in scoring, which should not come as a surprise. Despite only having five assists and four rebounds, Sears managed to get a lot done on his own, putting up an impressive 30 points.

Wisconsin Badgers vs. James Madison Dukes: Preview and prediction for NCAA Tournament round of 64

What’s your prediction for Wisconsin vs. James Madison?

Wisconsin basketball opens its 2024 NCAA Tournament against No. 12-seed James Madison on Friday night in Brooklyn, New York.

The Badgers enter the tournament with momentum after a 3-1 week at the Big Ten Tournament. The team had fallen to a postseason afterthought after a rough 3-8 stretch since the start of February. But wins over Maryland, Northwestern and top-ranked Purdue have fans believing entering March Madness.

IT’S BRACKET MADNESS: Enter USA TODAY’s NCAA tournament bracket contest for a chance at $1 million prize.

James Madison is a popular upset pick by some of the college basketball media and a group of television analysts. Wisconsin enters as a heavy favorite, but many nationally have bought into James Madison’s hot-streak entering the tournament.

With the game now fast-approaching, it’s time to put an official preview and prediction on the record:

Wisconsin: 75.1 points per game, 69.9 points allowed per game, 3-6 vs Top 25, BPI No. 18, 11-9 in conference play

James Madison: 84.4 points per game, 69.2 points allowed per game, 1-0 vs Top 25, BPI No. 46, 15-3 in conference play

Wisconsin:

  • A.J. Storr (16.9 points per game, 3.9 rebounds per game).
  • Chucky Hepburn (9.3 points per game, 3.4 rebounds per game, 3.9 assists per game)
  • Steven Crowl (11.2 points per game, 7.1 rebounds per game, 2.1 assists per game)

James Madison:

  • Terrence Edwards (17.4 points per game, 4.4 rebounds per game, 3.5 assists per game)
  • T.J. Bickerstaff (13.4 points per game, 8.5 rebounds per game, 1.7 assists per game)

Wisconsin: W vs. Marquette, L vs. Arizona, 1-2 vs. Purdue, 2-0 vs. Michigan State, 0-2 vs. Illinois

James Madison: W vs. Michigan State, 0-2 vs. Appalachian State, W vs. Kent State, W vs. Southern Illinois, W vs. Louisiana

Wisconsin: No. 17 overall, No. 13 offense, No. 47 defense, No. 3 strength of schedule

James Madison: No. 59 overall, No. 56 offense, No. 79 defense, No. 293 strength of schedule

Spread: Wisconsin -5.5 (-215) / James Madison +5.5 (+176)

Total: 145.5

From ESPN: “At least one No. 12 seed has defeated a No. 5 seed in 32 of 38 tournaments. Three of the six times that 12-seeds failed to win a first-round game have occurred in the past eight tourneys.”

Wisconsin has the size advantage over James Madison and should use it early and often. Expect hot starts from Steven Crowl and Tyler Wahl as the Badgers finally get a team without a top interior presence.

This week of rest should also help the Badgers after a busy week in Minneapolis, plus should help John Blackwell recover from his leg injury.

Yes, James Madison is red-hot, having won 13 straight and 16 of 17. But Wisconsin’s guard of Storr, Hepburn, Klesmit and Blackwell positions the team well entering the matchup. And the Badgers enter off their most impressive week of the season.

Many national analysts are picking the Dukes. I disagree completely and see Wisconsin moving on in blowout fashion.

Prediction: Wisconsin 78, James Madison 67

SERIES HISTORY: Alabama and Charleston have faced off once before

No. 4 Alabama will take on No. 13 Charleston in the first round of March Madness… but this isn’t the first time these two programs have met.

Alabama enters the NCAA Tournament as the No. 4 seed in the West Region, which is headlined by North Carolina, Arizona and Baylor. In the first round of March Madness, the Crimson Tide will face No. 13 seed Charleston.

The game will take place on Friday in Spokane, Washington, but this will not be the first time the Cougars and Crimson Tide have met on the court.

In the 1993-1994 college basketball season, Alabama finished the regular season, its second under head coach David Hobbs, with an SEC record of 12-4 and an overall record of 20-10. One of those 10 losses came at the hands of Charleston.

In Coleman Coliseum on Dec. 29, 1993, the Tide lost in blowout fashion at the hands of the Cougars with a final score of 82-60.

Alabama is expected to win this matchup, as their fast-paced offense should be too much for Charleston to handle. However, any upset shouldn’t come as a surprise in March.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama basketball as the Tide looks to even up the all-time series this Friday evening at 7:35 p.m. ET.

Nick Dunlap takes down World No. 1 among U.S. Amateur Round of 64 takeaways

Match play got off to a great start Wednesday.

CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. — Down goes No. 1.

The match-play portion of the 2023 U.S. Amateur began Wednesday at Cherry Hills Country Club, and with that came the No. 1 player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking falling in the Round of 64. However, there were numerous other events to happen on a steamy day in the Mile High City.

The youngest medalist in U.S. Amateur history, and top seed for match play, faces battles. There were players making a push for the U.S. Walker Cup team. There were also upsets and plenty of high-profile players heading home early.

Match play got off to a great start Wednesday, and there’s still plenty of golf to go.

Tale of the Tape: Team Stats – Notre Dame vs. Alabama

How do you feel after looking at these numbers?

Notre Dame would like to approach its scoring total from its win over Rutgers when it plays Alabama in the Round of 64. Even if the Irish have a scoring disadvantage in this matchup, their shooting percentages can make up for it, especially if their shots are coming from 3-point range. Naturally, those shots will have be in high volume, or it won’t mean much. Of course, we also can’t forget about their strong assist-to-turnover ratio.

The Crimson Tide certainly have the offensive power to stay competitive in an NCAA Tournament game, and the 3-pointers will come at one time or another. The problem is they can’t keep points from piling up on the other side of the scoreboard. Will their high number of blocks be enough to offset that? Perhaps, but they’ll have to make sure that ball doesn’t end up back in the Irish’s hands, or it will be a moot point.

Notre Dame ready to battle Alabama in NCAA Tournament

Hopefully, the basketball team fares better against the Tide than the football team.

All too often over the past decade, we’ve heard that Notre Dame never can beat Alabama in football. That’s because they’ve been correct, and those can’t stand the Irish will blurt that out for all the world to hear. However, they haven’t said anything about basketball, and the Irish can write a new narrative when these programs meet in the Round of 64 in the NCAA Tournament.

These programs last played each other at Walt Disney World in November 2015, and the Crimson Tide’s 74-73 win cut the Irish’s all-time lead in the series to 3-2. Now, they’ll be playing on the other side of the country in San Diego. The winner of this game will advance to play either Texas Tech or Montana State in the Round of 32.

Can the Irish count on another big game from Paul Atkinson Jr.? His 26 points, which included the game-winning putback in the First Four against Rutgers, set a record for the highest scoring total in a player’s debut NCAA Tournament game with the program. Or maybe the Irish should look to Cormac Ryan and his 12.3 scoring average since joining the starting lineup in February. It really doesn’t matter who steps up as long as the Irish are ahead when the clock hits zero.

Watch: Notre Dame celebrates in locker room after NCAA Tournament win

Think these guys are happy?

One of the cooler additions to March Madness coverage in recent years is celebrations in winning locker rooms. It usually consists of players and coaches gathering together and jumping up and down while cheering and shouting victory phrases. After Notre Dame beat Rutgers in perhaps the most epic game in First Four history, it would have been unreasonable to expect a calm locker room for the victors. Fortunately, for the sake of our enjoyment, that locker room was as far from calm as you possibly could get:

The Irish now will travel to the opposite end of the country to play sixth-seeded Alabama in the NCAA Tournament’s Round of 64. However, before that game begins, there’s a lot of celebrating to do, and that is well underway. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising if no one on the team slept on the way to San Diego. We know Prentiss Hubb and Trey Wertz won’t be feeling tired anytime soon:

Oh, and a jubilant Mike Brey has this message for everyone:
