Seven Big Ten teams including Rutgers are in the latest update of the ‘Rothstein 45’

Jon Rothstein has seven Big Ten teams among the top 45 in the nation.

The Big Ten has seven teams in the latest update of the ‘Rothstein 45,’ a considerable flex for the conference. Purdue and Michigan State land among the top four teams in the nation while Rutgers and Indiana squeak into the final five spots.

Jon Rothstein, a college basketball analyst and insider, regularly updates his ‘Rothstein 45’ to account for varying news in the college basketball world. It seems like an almost minute-by-minute news cycle is in place these days, given the buzz of activity with the transfer portal and players making decisions about their professional futures.

Purdue and Michigan State – in that order – have been the Big Ten’s two top teams since Rothstein unveiled his first rankings in April. From that first installment of his top 45 teams in mid-April, Purdue’s rank as third in the nation has remained unchanged while Michigan State has moved up one spot to fourth.

Eight Big Ten teams were ranked by Rothstein in April including No. 20 Northwestern, who has since dropped out of the rankings entirely. The same could be said for No. 45 Michigan, which is no longer ranked after being included in April.

Indiana, after a strong season in the transfer portal, is now in Rothstein’s rankings.

Check out how the Big Ten did in the most recent ‘Rothstein 45’:

Future Big Ten members:

  • No. 11 USC
  • No. 31 UCLA

Texas basketball ranks No. 12 in Jon Rothstein’s rankings

An influx of talent and a strong returning core has experts excited about Texas basketball.

Texas basketball is receiving plenty of hype in the offseason. Jon Rothstein is the latest commentator to heap praise on the Longhorns.

Rothstein ranked Texas No. 12 in his top 45 teams for the upcoming basketball season. Defensive improvement through the transfer portal was cited as the first reason for why Chris Beard’s team could succeed in 2022.

Texas added two big-time players through the transfer portal in Iowa State guard Tyrese Hunter and New Mexico State guard Sir’Jabari Rice. Hunter won Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors last season. Both players led their teams to NCAA Tournament upset victories.

Dillon Mitchell and Arterio Morris were expected to make an impact right away as freshman when Beard signed the two big-time recruits. They’ll be helped by a group of players that are familiar with the Longhorns’ system and standard.

Marcus Carr, Timmy Allen, Christian Bishop, Brock Cunningham and Dylan Disu are all significant returnees to provide Texas a strong core. They will need to step up to fill voids left by Andrew Jones, Courtney Ramey and Tre Mitchell.

The latest roster changes across college basketball have resulted in Michigan State sliding out of the top 25 in analyst Jon Rothstein’s preseason rankings.

Rothstein puts together a constantly updated “Rothstein 45” college basketball rankings, and the Spartans have dropped to No. 27 in the latest update. There has been plenty of roster changes due to transfers and players withdrawing from the NBA Draft that has pushed some teams ahead of Michigan State in this ranking.

Other Big Ten teams listed in Rothstein’s rankings include: Purdue (No. 6), Michigan (No. 7), Maryland (No. 16), Ohio State (No. 19), Indiana (No. 33), Illinois (No. 34) and Rutgers (No. 36).

Michigan State listed outside Top 25 of updated Jon Rothstein rankings

College basketball insider and CBS Sports analyst Jon Rothstein is not particularly high on the Spartans entering next season.

College basketball insider and CBS Sports analyst Jon Rothstein is not particularly high on the Spartans entering next season.

On Wednesday, Rothstein released his updated “ROTHSTEIN 45” early-edition rankings for the 2021-22 college basketball season and Michigan State is currently sitting outside the top 25. Rothstein has the Spartans as No. 29 in his updated rankings — click on the tweet below to see the full rankings.

Rothstein has seven Big Ten teams listed in his updated rankings, including Ohio State (No. 5), Purdue (No. 6), Michigan (No. 8), Maryland (No. 10), Indiana (No. 30), and Illinois (No. 33).

Like many who’ve put out these super early rankings, Rothstein has four Big Ten schools in an upper-tier (Ohio State, Purdue, Michigan and Maryland) and after that, there’s a noticeable drop-off to the next tier. That next tier certainly seems fitting for the Spartans at this point in time, but I personally believe Michigan State should be ranked higher than No. 29.

Some more roster shake-ups could be in store for the Spartans with still two open scholarships so we could potentially see Michigan State move up these rankings soon. Either way, it’s clear that Rothstein doesn’t anticipate Michigan State winning the Big Ten next year.

Texas moves up to No. 15 in the Rothstein 45

With the addition of five-star Greg Brown, UT has jumped six spots in the Rothstein 45, coming in at No. 15. Back in March, UT was No. 21.

Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports has released his top 45 teams going into the 2020-2021 college basketball season. Back in March, the Longhorns sat within the top 25 at No. 21, behind four other Big 12 schools.

With the addition of five-star forward Greg Brown, Texas has jumped six spots in the standings, coming in at No. 15. Leaping West Virginia (No. 16) and Texas Tech (No. 17), the Longhorns now only sit behind Baylor (No. 3) and Kansas (No. 4) in the Big 12.

Here is how the college basketball insider thinks Texas’ lineup will look next season:

15. Texas

Matt Coleman
Courtney Ramey
Andrew Jones
Kai Jones
Greg Brown

Key Losses: None

Key Newcomers: Greg Brown

Projected Bench: Kamaka Hepa, Jase Febres, Will Baker, Brock Cunningham, Royce Hamm, Gerald Liddell, Donovan Williams, Jericho Sims

Three key returning starters for the Longhorns will be the starting guards of Matt Coleman, Courtney Ramey, and Andrew Jones. Averaging a combined 35.1 points per game last season, the guards will be expected to carry the load game in and game out once again.

Brown will be the missing factor that can elevate Texas to a new level next season. His athleticism mixed with his raw basketball talent, especially on the defensive side of the ball, will be the reason the Longhorns compete in the Big 12.
