Michael Thomas served his one-week suspension. But will he sign with a new team now that it’s behind him?

Let’s start with the good news for Michael Thomas. The former New Orleans Saints wide receiver served his one-week NFL suspension stemming from an altercation with a construction worker near his home last year, and he’s now available to sign with a new team.

Now the bad news: Thomas doesn’t appear to be any closer to finding a new team to play for than when the Saints released him back in March. That’s not to say he doesn’t have options or that there won’t be suitors calling his agent in the days and weeks ahead. But a one-game suspension probably wasn’t going to keep anyone from signing him when so many teams are churning through wide receivers right now.

Look at the Cleveland Browns. There’s an obvious connection there with Jameis Winston backing up Deshaun Watson. Thomas was one of Winston’s strongest supporters when they were teammates in New Orleans. Cleveland just signed Kadarius Toney to their practice squad after a couple of other teams kicked the tires on him and didn’t find anything there.

The Buffalo Bills are another option. They have former Saints coaches on staff who also know Thomas well like offensive coordinator Joe Brady and quarterbacks coach Ronald Curry, who worked with the receivers in New Orleans. Buffalo has Super Bowl ambitions but rookie draft pick Keon Coleman led the team with just 51 receiving yards in their season opener. Thomas has averaged 53 yards per game over the last three seasons he’s played.

Thomas isn’t the same player now who broke (and still holds) the NFL record for the most receptions in a single season, who won all those awards and made all those plays. But he can still help a team in the right role. Finding that fit is going to be tricky. Beyond the football concerns, teams are going to be wary of someone with his injury history and who criticized his coach and teammates on social media. That sort of thing is popular with fans who share his opinions, but it’s a turnoff for teams looking for low-profile signings to fill out their practice squads.

Former UNC football standout Ronald Curry is joining the Buffalo Bills coaching staff after spending time with the Saints

A former North Carolina Tar Heels’ standout has found a new home in the NFL as a coach.

After spending the majority of his coaching career in New Orleans, Ronald Curry is on the move and he’s getting the chance to coach one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Curry is heading to Buffalo to be the quarterbacks coach for the Bills and Josh Allen.

The Bills made the announcement of the hiring on Wednesday, sending out a press release with facts about the hire. The 44-year-old Curry was previously an assistant on the Saints staff going back to the 2016 season. He also had a stint with San Francisco prior to that.

Curry joins a Bills team that fell short in the AFC playoffs again, losing to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round. But in the loss, Allen was one of the big bright spots for the Bills in the game.

Allen’s climb to being one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL continues into this season and now Curry has the chance to help him improve even more.

After reports that surfaced first noted Ronald Curry’s addition to the Buffalo Bills coaching staff, we now know what he’s going to do with that team.

The Bills have officially announced that Curry has been named the team’s quarterbacks coach:

Curry, 44, was previously an assistant with the New Orleans Saints dating back to 2016. He spent years working with the wide receivers and quarterbacks before being promoted to passing game coordinator.

According to reports including Saints Wire, New Orleans did try to retain Curry but he opted for Buffalo.

Prior to becoming OC, Joe Brady was Buffalo’s quarterbacks coach and there had yet to be a replacement named for him there. It was speculated that the Bills would end up naming Curry QB coach.

In college, Curry played quarterback and receiver at North Carolina. He was a seventh-round choice by the Oakland Raiders in the 2002 NFL draft. In seven seasons with the Raiders, he caught 193 passes for 2,347 yards and 13 touchdowns.

In addition to Curry being appointed, Jahmile Addae and Christian Taylor were added to Buffalo’s coaching staff on defense.

The Buffalo Bills have added Ronald Curry to their coaching staff on the offensive side of the ball.

Curry, 44, has been hired by the Bills, per KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson. However, his exact role at this time is unclear.

Curry was previously an assistant with the New Orleans Saints dating back to 2016. He spent years working with the wide receivers and quarterbacks before being promoted to passing game coordinator.

The Saints tried to retain Ronald Curry before he left for the Bills, but he left for a better opportunity working with Joe Brady:

Well this is interesting: ESPN’s Katherine Terrell reports that the New Orleans Saints did try to keep Ronald Curry on staff before he left for the Buffalo Bills. Terrell says the Saints offered to move Curry back to coaching wide receivers — where he started out in their organization — but he elected to continue working with quarterbacks in Buffalo.

It makes sense for both sides. The Saints know that Curry is a good coach and popular with his players, and he could have done well on Klint Kubiak’s staff in his old role. At the same time, Curry will have  more opportunities for advancement working with a more prominent position group. And he’ll be coaching under Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, his old coworker, too. The pipeline for quarterbacks coaches to offensive coordinators and head coaches is much shorter than the one for wide receivers coaches.

On top of that, Curry interviewed for the job going to Kubiak, too. Being asked to work as a subordinate to someone chosen over him could be an awkward situation. He’ll have a better opportunity elsewhere.

Good luck to Curry in Buffalo. As for the Saints, they must hire new position coaches at every spot offensively: quarterbacks, wide receivers, running backs, and offensive line. Kubiak will not be formally introduced as their new offensive coordinator until his San Francisco 49ers have finished competing in Super Bowl LVIII but the team is already hard at work filling out his staff.

It didn’t take long for Ronald Curry to land on his feet. He’s joining ex-New Orleans Saints assistant Joe Brady on the Buffalo Bills, per KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson. The Bills had a vacant quarterbacks coach position and Curry is likely filling it. News broke Tuesday evening that Curry would not return to the Saints for 2024.

Curry was a respected coach in New Orleans — he had spent years working with the wide receivers and quarterbacks before being promoted to passing game coordinator, but there wasn’t a role for him on incoming offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak’s staff. The Saints are shedding more and more pieces from the Sean Payton era.

With that said, it’s a little surprising that Curry didn’t land with two head coaches he’s worked for in the past: Sean Payton on the Denver Broncos and Jim Harbaugh with the Los Angeles Chargers. But there’s obvious familiarity between him and Brady, and Buffalo is a good fit with a playoff-ready roster and a talented young quarterback in Josh Allen. Good luck RC.

This is tough news, but it was always a possibility with the New Orleans Saints overhauling their offensive coaching staff. The Times-Picayune | Advocate’s Jeff Duncan reports that longtime New Orleans Saints assistant coach Ronald Curry will not be part of the team with Klint Kubiak coming in as offensive coordinator. He’ll be pursuing other opportunities.

Curry was popular with his players. A standout college quarterback himself, he steadily rose through the ranks in New Orleans as a wide receivers coach before working with the quarterbacks, and he was promoted further as the team’s passing game coordinator under former offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael. But he isn’t part of the plans with Kubiak bringing in his own staff.

So what’s next for Curry? That’s yet to be determined, but odds are he’ll wind up in Denver. Sean Payton tried to coax him into joining the Broncos last year but Curry opted to stay in New Orleans instead. It shouldn’t shock anyone if Payton tries to recruit him again.

And with Curry leaving the team the Saints will need to hire a new quarterbacks coach, and maybe a passing game coordinator if that role exists in Kubiak’s offense. What’s clear more than anything else: Dennis Allen is giving Kubiak a lot of leeway to organize the offense as he sees fit. If that means parting ways with well-established, popular assistants like Curry, so be it.

The New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator search has lost another candidate, but this time it wasn’t someone getting hired by a different team. Top candidate Jerrod Johnson has told teams that he will be returning to the Houston Texans as their quarterbacks coach for another season, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. He’ll have an opportunity to gain experience and improve his standing after another year working with C.J. Stroud and Bobby Slowik.

New Orleans wasn’t the only team in pursuit of Johnson, but they made him a priority. The Saints had interviewed Johnson twice, with him being near the top of their list as well as multiple other teams. They have a second interview planned with former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy  on Wednesday, who will be the only other candidate to meet with the Saints twice.

As for the rest of their list (that are still available), it is as follows: Greg Lewis, Klint Kubiak, Brian Griese, Ronald Curry, Mike Sullivan and Brian Johnson. Others may have met with the team but not been reported, as was the case for Getsy, so stay tuned.

A former North Carolina standout is getting at least a look at a potential offensive coordinator job in the NFL.

As the New Orleans Saints made some moves to their coaching staff, they have an opening at offensive coordinator. And so far in this hiring process, one former North Carolina standout got an interview. According to Luke Johnson, the Saints have interviewed Ronald Curry for the position.

Curry is highly thought of inside the Saints organization, where he currently serves as quarterbacks coach. He’s spent eight seasons with the organization and has climbed his way through the ranks.

Curry is just one of a number of candidates the Saints have interviewed so far including Zac Robinson, Brian Griese, Klint Kubiak and Shane Waldron.

He’s the only in-house candidate that has received an interview so far.
