Texas Basketball: Five-star guard AJ Johnson commits to the Longhorns

Chris Beard has Texas’ basketball program rolling.

Chris Beard has Texas’ basketball program rolling at the moment. Less than a week following the Longhorns’ statement victory over Gonzaga, Texas just hit a home run on the recruiting trail.

Five-star guard AJ Johnson announced his commitment to Texas on Monday afternoon. He chose the Horns over the likes of Lousiville, LSU and professional opportunities.

“I chose Texas because I have seen what they do every day and the people around them. I just feel like it’s where I’ll be the most comfortable. Also, I chose Texas because of how they let their guards go and their fan base. The city of Austin is lit.”

Johnson ranks as the No. 2 combo guard in Calif. and the No. 15 overall player in the 247Sports composite. He joins fellow five-star Ron Holland as the second top-15 recruit for the Longhorns in the 2023 class.

Johnson is a true three-level scorer with a knack for hitting clutch shots. Chris Beard and the staff are ecstatic for Johnson to join the program.

HOOKED: Texas lands 2023 five-star PF Ron Holland

Chris Beard and the Texas Longhorns strike gold again on the recruiting trail.

Chris Beard and the Texas Longhorns strike gold again on the recruiting trail.

2023 five-star power forward Ron Holland announced his commitment to Texas on Saturday morning. He chose the Horns over the likes of Arkansas, Kentucky, UCLA and others.

Holland is listed as the No. 1 prospect in the state of Texas and a top 10 player nationally in the 247Sports composite rankings.

The Duncanville product is uber-athletic and can play on both ends of the court. He helped lead Duncanville on a state championship run in his junior season. With room to improve his outside scoring ability, Holland has the potential to be a future NBA lottery pick.

Texas landed five-star Arterio Morris and Dillion Mitchell in the class of 2022. Coach Beard is having no issues getting big-time talents to Austin.

Holland’s commitment sparked a massive reaction on social media. Here is a look at some of the best tweets following the news breaking.

Texas trending for 2023 five-star PF Ron Holland

One of the best basketball prospects in the class of 2023 is nearing a college decision.

One of the best basketball prospects in the class of 2023 is nearing a college decision.

Five-star power forward Ron Holland has narrowed his recruitment to three schools. Arkansas, Texas and UCLA all made the cut for the nation’s No. 10 prospect. Holland passed up on potential NBA G League opportunities in favor of playing in college.

Holland plans to take official visits to all three programs before committing to his future school.

His 6-foot-8 frame creates mismatches on the offensive and defensive sides of the court. With plenty of room to grow, Holland has one of the highest ceilings in the class of 2023 and the look of a future NBA player.

Chris Beard and the Longhorns would love to keep the Duncanville High School product in the state of Texas. A recent 247Sports crystal ball projection was entered in favor of Texas on Friday.

Holland spoke on what stands out about each of his remaining three finalists in a recent interview with On3 Sports.

Auburn offers 2023 five-star forward from Texas

Auburn extended on offer on Monday to 2023 five-star forward Ron Holland.

On Monday, the Auburn coaching staff extended an offer to 2023 small forward Ron Holland. He is the fourth small forward that has been offered by the Tigers in the 2023 recruiting class.

Holland is regarded as a five-star according to 247Sports’ recruiting rankings. He is listed at 6-foot-8 and 195 pounds. Several of the schools that have offered Holland thus far are Houston, Memphis, UCLA, Texas, and Arkansas among numerous others. He played for Duncanville High School this past season. The Panthers went 35-1 and won the 6A state championship in Texas. Holland was very instrumental in the team’s success and will likely do the same next season.

The Tigers can use a player that can stretch the floor and present the size that Coach Pearl likes at either the three or four spot on the floor. Here is what 247Sports recruiting analyst Brandon Jenkins had to say about Holland’s playstyle:

“Holland has a high motor to go along with good mobility, length, and agility. He runs the floor and changes ends well. Holland is both very active and versatile defensively. He is capable of impacting the game in a number of ways, but his ability to crash the glass maybe his biggest strength. He has worked on his shooting mechanics as they have progressed since his arrival in high school. He needs to continue to develop in that area of his game. A young prospect for his class, Holland’s upside will be based upon his mindset and dedication in improving his craft.”

The addition of Holland would immediately boost the recruiting class. Coach Pearl and his staff are trying to assemble a “blue-blood” program. In order to do that, they know that they need some of the top recruits in the country. Holland fits in Pearl’s system and he is definitely a player to keep an eye on as his senior season approaches.

2023 Basketball Prospects: Ron Holland’s Recruiting Profile

The small forward recently included Auburn in his final eight choices.

Auburn basketball could be getting another high-profile recruit.

Texas native Ron Holland, who is currently ranked No. 2 on On3’s list of 2023 basketball recruits, announced his final eight destinations on Sunday. They included seven collegiate schools, one of which was Auburn, and the NBA G-League, where high school players can go instead of a college to develop themselves for the NBA and receive a professional salary.

At the moment, On3’s RPM (Recruiting Prediction Machine) has the small forward choosing Memphis, but there will still be time to win him over as a 2023 prospect. [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] is likely making a good case for him to come with the additions of Yohan Traore and Johni Broome for the 2022 season, and should both of them stay for 2023, the roster would be appealing for any new recruit who wants to win a championship.

Here is the rundown on Holland’s ratings, offers and top schools:

Unfortunately for Auburn fans, it was not all good news on Sunday. Auburn baseball lost to Arkansas in the final game of the series and softball dropped the final game of the regular season against Tennessee.

Here is a collection of the top stories around Auburn on Sunday to start your morning.

Five-Star Forward High on Arkansas’ Radar

Arkansas is looking to build on the success of their 2022 signing class by recruiting one of the nation’s best forwards for the 2023 class.

Arkansas Basketball looks to capitalize on their class of 2022 recruiting class by reaching out to the No. 2 player in the recruiting cycle.

[autotag]Ron Holland[/autotag], a five-star forward from Duncanville, Texas, has received 13 offers to date, but has told Joe Tipton of On3 that five schools are recruiting him the hardest, with Arkansas being on that list.

“I’m being heavily recruited by UCLA, Houston, Oregon, Memphis, Arkansas, and my folks have been talking to the G-League,” Holland said to Tipton in an article posted Friday.

Holland also mentions in the post that his only official visit has been to Memphis, but plans to visit Oregon, Auburn, Houston, and Kentucky. As he prepares for his senior season at Duncanville High School, Holland says that he is getting serious about his recruitment, and plans to announce his college decision late this summer.

According to On3, Holland is the No. 2 player in the nation for the Class of 2023, and the No. 1 overall prospect for the state of Texas. In addition to his Arkansas offer, Holland has received offers from programs such as Memphis, Auburn, UCLA, Kansas, and Texas.
