49ers get pair of 3rd-round picks after Jets hire Robert Saleh as head coach

The 49ers received two compensatory draft picks after the Jets hired Robert Saleh as their next head coach Thursday night.

The 49ers lost Robert Saleh to the Jets on Thursday night, but they added some additional draft capital upon his departure.

In accordance with the NFL’s Rooney Rule revision, which incentivizes teams to groom minority head-coaching candidates and front office personnel, San Francisco receives compensatory third-round picks in the 2021 and 2022 drafts with Saleh accepting New York’s head-coaching position.

“The employer-club of a minority employee who has been hired by another club as its Head Coach or the Primary Football Executive (General Manager) shall receive Draft choice compensation in the form of a compensatory Draft pick in the third round of each of the next two Drafts for an employee as either a Head Coach or Primary Football executive, or for the next three drafts if it has two employees hired for both positions,” 2020 resolution JC-2A states.

It remains to be seen when exactly the 49ers will be picking with their compensatory selection, as there are still other head-coaching hires to be made and compensatory picks for last offseason’s free agency on the horizon. According to Over The Cap, six teams are slated to get third-round compensatory picks in the 2021 NFL draft.

Saleh, who is of Lebanese descent, joins Brian Flores, Ron Rivera and Mike Tomlin as the fourth active NFL head coach of color. He is also the first Muslim head coach and the third Arab American head coach in league history, joining ex-Bears coach Abe Gibron and ex-Jets coach Rich Kotite.

Lions coaching candidates Robert Saleh, Arthur Smith hired elsewhere

Saleh joined the Jets while Smith is expected to join the Falcons

Two of the more prominent candidates for the Detroit Lions head coaching vacancy are no longer available to the team.

Robert Saleh, considered an early front-runner in Detroit, has been hired as the head coach of the New York Jets. The former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator joined the Jets on Friday morning. He is a Detroit-area native and had strong interest amongst the local Lions fanbase.

Another top candidate, Arthur Smith, canceled his trip to Detroit for a second interview with the Lions. Smith is widely expected to accept the head coaching position with the Atlanta Falcons as early as Friday. Smith has been the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans for the last two seasons.

The Lions hired Brad Holmes as the new GM on Thursday from the Los Angeles Rams. His presence could alter the candidate pool for the head coaching vacancy.

Rams should thank Jets for taking Robert Saleh out of NFC West

The Rams had a lot of trouble against Robert Saleh’s defense the last two years, but that won’t be a problem anymore.

The New York Jets have found their new head coach and the Los Angeles Rams should thank them for hiring who they did. On Thursday night, the Jets announced that Robert Saleh will be their next head coach, replacing Adam Gase at the helm in New York.

With Saleh earning this promotion, he’ll no longer be a thorn in the side of Sean McVay and the Rams in the NFC West. And for that, they should be thankful. The Rams have had trouble against the 49ers while Saleh was their defensive coordinator, specifically in the last two years.

In their eight meetings since 2017, when Saleh and McVay were both hired by their respective teams, the Rams have been heled to 20 points or fewer four times. They’ve lost four games in a row against San Francisco, and in each of those games, the Rams had at least one turnover.

And the Rams’ two losses to San Francisco this season were both games they were favored to win. The 49ers were missing several key players on both sides of the ball, but specifically on defense, they were without Nick Bosa, Solomon Thomas and Richard Sherman in the first game, though Sherman returned for the second.

Yet the Rams still failed to get anything going offensively. They scored 16 points in their October meeting and 20 against the 49ers in November, dropping the games by a combined 11 points.

Jared Goff specifically should be thankful that Saleh is gone. In the last two seasons against the 49ers, he has four touchdown passes and four interceptions, taking six sacks with a total passer rating of only 70.3.

The 49ers seemed to figure out the Rams offense in the last two seasons and it’s largely due to Saleh’s presence. Now, neither Goff nor McVay will have to face him again until the Jets pop back up on the Rams’ schedule in 2024.

Now, the three coaches who seemed to crack the code to McVay’s offense reside in the AFC East: Bill Belichick, Brian Flores and Saleh.

Jets hire Robert Saleh over Matt Eberflus as new HC

Matt Eberflus won’t be going to New York.

The New York Jets have found their new head coach and it doesn’t appear to be Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. Instead, they are going with San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.

As far as we know, Eberflus only interviewed with two teams: the Jets and the Los Angeles Chargers. Both interviews have already been conducted so it seems like the only job the Colts have to keep their eye on will be the Chargers one.

Eberflus had a request from the Houston Texans to interview but he declined it.

While Eberflus was a hot candidate throughout the interviewing process, Saleh was considered the top candidate in most circles throughout the league given what he’s done on the west coast.

With the Jets job out of the way, Eberflus could become the next head coach of the Chargers or he will be returning to the lead the Colts defense for a fourth season in 2021.

49ers DC Robert Salah to be Jets head coach, face Saints again in 2021

The New York Jets hired San Francisco 49ers DC Robert Saleh as their new head coach, meaning he’ll face the New Orleans Saints in 2021.

[jwplayer hExFh2RQ-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints will have to hit the road to play the New York Jets in 2021, and there will be a new head coach patrolling the opposing sidelines: Robert Saleh, who isn’t too unfamiliar with New Orleans. ESPN reported that Saleh reached an agreement on a five-year deal with the Jets on Thursday evening following a busy round of interviews around the league.

Saleh previously worked as the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator since 2017, facing the Saints twice in that time. And his defense was put in a tough spot both times. They allowed 46 points in a last-minute win in 2019 before yielding a more-respectable 27 points in a 2020 loss. His next game with New Orleans will be his third meeting in as many years.

It’ll be interesting to see how his unit performs when the Saints visit next season. He has a solid foundation in players like defensive lineman Quinnen Williams and safety Marcus Maye, but the rebuild could take time. Maybe his past experience coaching against New Orleans can give him an edge.

One other point worth noting: Saints defensive backs coach Aaron Glenn was a candidate for this job, though the Jets ultimately went another way. Glenn hasn’t shown much interest in other openings around the league, so it’s possible he returns to New Orleans in 2021.

49ers add pair of 3rd-round picks after Robert Saleh joins Jets as head coach

The 49ers earned a pair of third-round compensatory picks since Robert Saleh was hired as a head coach.

The 49ers lost defensive coordinator Robert Saleh to the New York Jets, but they gained a couple of draft picks in the process.

Thanks to the Rooney Rule revision aimed at incentivizing teams to develop minority head coach and front office candidates, San Francisco will get compensatory third-round picks in the 2021 and 2022 drafts with Saleh taking the Jets head coaching position.

The 49ers traded their own third-round pick on Day 3 of the 2020 draft in the deal that landed them left tackle Trent Williams. Now they’ll recoup that third-round selection to give them at least one in every round.

Exactly when that pick will come is yet to be revealed. There are other coaching hires to be made and teams will receive compensatory picks for last offseason’s free agency as well. Six teams are slated to get third-round comp picks according to Over the Cap.

Here’s an updated look at San Francisco’s selections:

Round 1, Pick 12
Round 2, Pick 44
Round 3, Compensatory
Round 4, Pick 114
Round 5, Pick 153
Round 5, Pick 170 (via NO)
Round 6, Pick 191
Round 7, Pick 225 (via NYJ)
Round 7, Pick 235

Jets Twitter reacts with joy after team hires Robert Saleh

Here’s how twitter reacted to the Jets hiring Robert Saleh as their next head coach.

Robert Saleh will be the 20th coach in Jets history.

Saleh comes to New York after spending the last four seasons as San Francisco’s defensive coordinator. In San Francisco’s Super Bowl run in 2019, Saleh’s defense allowed the fewest passing yards per game (169.2 yards) in the NFL since the 2009 Jets allowed 153.7. His defense also ranked second in the NFL in total yards per game (281.8 yards),which was the fewest for the 49ers since 1997 when they allowed 250.8.

Even with injuries in 2020, Saleh’s Niners defense still finished the 2020 season fifth in yards allowed, fourth in passing yards allowed, and seventh in rushing yards allowed. Now the Jets are hoping Saleh can lead an entire team in the right direction.

For what it’s worth, it looks like fans are on board with the idea. Gang Green fans took to Twitter late Thursday night to share their excitement over their new head coach.

Report: New Jets HC Robert Saleh expected to make Mike LaFleur his OC

Robert Saleh is not the only coach expected to leave The Bay for The Big Apple.

Robert Saleh is not the only coach expected to leave The Bay for The Big Apple.

The Jets’ new head coach is expected to bring 49ers passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur with him to New York, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. LaFleur has never been an offensive coordinator at the NFL level, but he did hold the position at Saint Joseph’s and Davidson.

LaFleur first started coaching at his alma mater, Elmhurst, in 2009. The former college quarterback has worked with Kyle Shanahan in Cleveland, Atlanta and San Francisco and was part of the 49ers’ Super Bowl run in 2019.

LaFleur is the younger brother of Packers head coach Matt LaFleur.

Report: 49ers to promote LB coach DeMeco Ryans as defensive coordinator

The San Francisco 49ers will tap LB coach DeMeco Ryans as defensive coordinator to replace Robert Saleh per Ian Rapoport.

[jwplayer Yemsocjb-ThvAeFxT]

The 49ers didn’t have to go far to find a replacement for defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, who took the head coaching job with the New York Jets. They’re expected to promote linebackers coach DeMeco Ryans to the position vacated by Saleh per NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

Ryans has drawn rave reviews from both Saleh and head coach Kyle Shanahan. The linebackers coach helped groom Fred Warner, Dre Greenlaw and others after taking over as the 49ers’ inside linebackers coach in 2018.

It’s been a rapid rise for the 36-year-old former Texans linebacker. He retired in 2015 after a 10-year NFL career and began his coaching tenure in 2017 as a defensive quality control coach for the 49ers. His quick promotion to defensive coordinator after only four seasons in the coaching ranks speaks to how well thought of he is in the organization.

AFC East news: Jets hire Robert Saleh, not Brian Daboll, as next head coach

We’ve got a mixed bag of goodies in this one.

First and foremost, the Buffalo Bills have a new head coach they’ll be facing twice a year via their AFC East rivals, the New York Jets. His name is not Brian Daboll as well.

The Jets hired San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, signing him to a five-year deal on Thursday. The Jets were one of two teams that interviewed Daboll for their recent head coaching vacancy.

Saleh received heavy interest on the head-coaching free agent market, but Jets general manager Joe Douglas made sure to seal the deal following their first in-person meet and greet. The two sides met twice early this week and then Saleh also met with the Los Angeles Chargers for a second time this week. Evidently New York wanted to lock him up quickly.

Speaking of the Chargers, that is the other team that has already interviewed Daboll. So far only two teams have done so, and now one is off the market meaning the Bills’ changes of keeping their offensive coordinator have now increase, but we’re still not in the home stretch.

On Saleh, he has run a stout defense in San Francisco. Even with injuries to multiple stars, the 49ers still finished the 2020 season fifth in yards allowed, fourth in passing yards allowed and seventh in rushing yards allowed. They did, however, allow 24.4 points per game, 17th in the NFL.
