‘Definitely a possibility’ that Joseph-Day, Henderson and Rochell can return for Super Bowl

Sean McVay isn’t ruling out the possibility that Sebastian Joseph-Day and 2 others on IR could return for the Super Bowl

The Los Angeles Rams have dealt with injuries throughout this postseason, missing Taylor Rapp and Jordan Fuller for their last three games. They were also without Andrew Whitworth for one week, Joe Noteboom this past week and now Tyler Higbee is banged up after injuring his knee.

But there could also be some reinforcements on the way to help with the depth at multiple positions. Sean McVay isn’t ruling out the possibility of Sebastian Joseph-Day, Darrell Henderson Jr. and Robert Rochell returning in time for the Super Bowl.

They’re currently on injured reserve but have been designated to return, allowing them to practice before being activated.

“Yeah, that’s a good question. Reggie (Scott) and I kind of started (talking about it). We’ll talk about that,” McVay said Monday. “There’s definitely a possibility. I want to make sure that I sit down and hit those guys about how they’re feeling before anything becomes official, but I definitely am not closing the door on the possibility of those three guys being able to participate.”

Joseph-Day would be a big boost to the defensive line, which is already playing so well with Aaron Donald, Greg Gaines and A’Shawn Robinson. Joseph-Day was the starting nose tackle for the first part of the season before tearing his pec, and has really become an impactful player.

Henderson would likely slot in behind Cam Akers and Sony Michel as a situational back if he were to return for the Super Bowl, with a similar scenario for Rochell at cornerback. Jalen Ramsey, Darious Williams and David Long Jr. are the top three cornerbacks, with Dont’e Deayon not even playing a snap the last two weeks. So it’s unlikely Rochell would see much playing time against the Bengals if he does return.

Ernest Jones won’t play vs. Buccaneers, could return next week if Rams win

Ernest Jones won’t be active for the Rams on Sunday but he could return next week if Los Angeles advances.

Los Angeles Rams rookie Ernest Jones has been on injured reserve since Week 15 and there was hope that he could return in time for Sunday’s divisional round matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Despite the Rams designating Jones to return from injured reserve on Thursday, Sean McVay said Friday that Jones won’t play on Sunday, but is “on track for next week.”

Of course, for Jones to play next week, the Rams would need to take of business by defeating the Buccaneers on Sunday. Jones would have been a welcomed addition for Los Angeles with Leonard Fournette returning for Tampa Bay, but Travin Howard should continue seeing an increased role in Jones’ absence.

Also, with Jones sidelined for another week, Troy Reeder will likely have the green dot on his helmet again against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers.

Besides the rookie inside linebacker, the Rams also designated Darrell Henderson Jr., Sebastian Joseph-Day, and Robert Rochell to return from injured reserve ahead of Sunday’s contest. But just like Jones, none of them are expected to make their return to the field this weekend.

It’s also been made official that neither Andrew Whitworth nor Taylor Rapp will suit up for the Rams on Sunday. At the very least, if Los Angeles emerges victorious against Tampa Bay, it could be getting a handful of guys back in time to play the San Francisco 49ers or the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game.

Rams designate Sebastian Joseph-Day, Darrell Henderson Jr. and Robert Rochell to return from IR

The Rams designated a trio of former starters to return from injured reserve, including Sebastian Joseph-Day

The Los Angeles Rams are just two days away from facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but there’s a chance they’ll have three former starters back on the active roster for this matchup. On Friday, The Rams designated Sebastian Joseph-Day, Darrell Henderson Jr. and Robert Rochell to return from injured reserve. All three of them were starters at one point this season, making them key players to have available.

They still must be activated by Sunday in order to play against the Buccaneers, but they’re now able to return to practice. Sean McVay indicated that Henderson could have a chance to play against the Bucs, like Ernest Jones, but he’s been less optimistic about Joseph-Day and Rochell recently.

McVay told reporters on Tuesday that Joseph-Day and Rochell “haven’t been a part of the conversation” to return yet.

“It’s a little bit different circumstances with them, so don’t have any true updates on those guys,” he said.

If Henderson is able to play, he’ll join a backfield that already features Cam Akers and Sony Michel, who both played well against the Cardinals.

Joseph-Day’s role is less clear now than it was before he got hurt thanks to the emergence of Greg Gaines, who has been a star as the starting nose tackle.

When Rochell returns, he’ll provide depth as the third or fourth cornerback in a rotation with Dont’e Deayon and David Long Jr.

Henderson has been out since injuring his knee in Week 16. Rochell has been sidelined since Week 13 with a chest injury, while Joseph-Day hasn’t played since Oct. 24 when he injured his pec.

Sean McVay believes CB Robert Rochell is ‘going to be OK’ after suffering knee injury

Sean McVay says the initial tests on Robert Rochell’s injured knee “checked out well.”

The Rams were almost dealt another big blow to their secondary on Sunday but it sounds like Robert Rochell, who left with a knee injury, is going to be OK. Sean McVay told reporters after the 28-19 win over the Lions that he believes Rochell avoided a serious injury, with Rochell telling the coach that the initial tests on his knee checked out OK.

McVay will have more information on Monday after meeting with Reggie Scott and the training staff, but hopefully this is just a minor injury for the rookie cornerback.

“I think he’s going to be OK,” McVay said. “I haven’t talked to Reggie and his group, but I did talk to Robert. He said the initial tests checked out well, but I’ll be able to give you further clarity tomorrow.”

Rochell has been elevated to a starting role with Darious Williams on injured reserve, so he’s become an important player on defense. Dont’e Deayon has also stepped up, and David Long Jr. remains an option at cornerback, but Rochell continues to improve with more reps.

Robert Rochell questionable to return with knee injury

Robert Rochell suffered a knee injury against the Lions and is questionable to return.

The Rams are already thin at cornerback after losing Darious Williams to an ankle injury, placing him on injured reserve two weeks ago. Now, Robert Rochell is dealing with an injury of his own.

He left Sunday’s game against the Lions and is questionable to return with a knee injury. Rochell is working as the No. 2 cornerback opposite Jalen Ramsey, sharing time with Dont’e Deayon, as well.

The Rams need all the help they can get at cornerback and losing Rochell to injury would be a significant blow.

4 players to watch in Rams vs. Giants

Of the players suiting up in Sunday’s game, here are four players to watch when the Rams square off with the Giants in Week 6.

The Los Angeles Rams will hit the road to face a hobbled New York Giants team in Week 6. Los Angeles was able to bounce back from a disheartening performance versus the Arizona Cardinals in Week 4 by defeating the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday Night Football in Week 5.

The offense of the Rams continues to hum along nicely with Matthew Stafford operating it. While Stafford misses throws here and there, he’s performed well in his first five games in Sean McVay’s offense. It doesn’t hurt to have an assortment of weapons that includes Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, Van Jefferson, DeSean Jackson, Tyler Higbee, and Darrell Henderson Jr.

Do you know what does hurt, though? Having multiple starters on offense sidelined. The Giants come into Sunday’s showdown with the Rams having Saquon Barkley and Kenny Golladay likely out, while Daniel Jones, Kadarius Toney, Sterling Shepard, and Darius Slayton are all uncertain to play.

Given the fact that several Giants players may not suit up, Los Angeles is the heavy road favorite on Sunday. Ahead of what could be labeled a ‘trap game’ for McVay’s squad, here are four players to watch on the Rams when they face the Giants in Week 6.

Robert Rochell never expected to be a starter this early in his career

Robert Rochell was thrust into a starting role last week, something he didn’t expect to have this early in his career.

Somewhat unexpectedly, the Rams made a change at cornerback in Week 5 when they benched David Long Jr. for rookie Robert Rochell. Rochell had played just 46 total snaps in Weeks 1-4, understandably being given a limited role as a fourth-round rookie.

But against the Seahawks last Thursday, he played a season-high 54 snaps, made two tackles and broke up one pass. It wasn’t a perfect outing for Rochell, allowing a touchdown in coverage and committing pass interference on a deep throw to Tyler Lockett, but he should continue to get better as he gains experience.

He told reporters on Monday that he never expected to start this early in his career, but he’s taking the opportunity in stride.

“I didn’t, but rookie is just a title. And that’s just how I look at a lot of things, a lot of stuff,” Rochell said. “Titles are tricky, and sometimes stuff happens, so you just got to be ready. I never would’ve thought I’d be in this situation this early in my career, and when I got that notification of what was going to happen, I had to right then put my big boy shoes on. I’ve got to be ready. I’ve got to stand up for this team and all the other guys that are going out there day in and day out with me. We’re all representing each other so I just tried to go out there with a big heart and a clear mind.”

Rochell has a ton of potential as a cornerback, given his athleticism and ball skills. It’s what drew the Rams to him in the fourth round despite being a small-school prospect out of Central Arkansas.

He’ll get even more opportunities to contribute in the near future after Darious Williams was placed on injured reserve, sidelining him for at least three weeks. And with the way Sean McVay talked about Rochell, he doesn’t sound like a player whose role will decrease after one shaky outing against Seattle.

Sean McVay shares injury updates on Nick Scott, Darious Williams and Robert Rochell

Nick Scott has a knee sprain and will be out a month, while Darious Williams should be back next week from his ankle injury.

The Rams secondary is dealing with a few injuries, though none of them seem to be overly serious. Sean McVay shared updates on three defensive backs after practice Thursday, two days before the preseason opener against the Chargers on Saturday night.

Nick Scott left practice on Tuesday with what turned out to be a knee injury and will be out a month. McVay said it’s “a little bit of a sprain of the knee” and the team is hoping to have him back for Week 1 against the Bears.

As for Darious Williams, he has an ankle injury that continues to linger, but it’s nothing major. McVay said the team wants to be smart with him and he should be back within the next week.

And finally, Robert Rochell returned to practice Thursday after undergoing surgery on his wrist on August 3. He had his wrist wrapped and though he was able to do individual drills on the side, he will need a cast when it comes time to do full-speed team drills.

“What that exactly looks like and what the timetable is, anywhere over the next couple of weeks,” McVay said, via the Rams’ site.

Robert Rochell and Bobby Brown III share updates after undergoing surgery

Robert Rochell and Bobby Brown III both underwent surgery Monday and each procedure went well, according to the rookies.

Rams rookies Robert Rochell and Bobby Brown III each suffered injuries in practice on Saturday, with Rochell hurting his wrist and Brown injuring his thumb. Both issues required surgery and on Monday, the rookies went under the knife.

After the surgeries were done, they each provided an update on Twitter. Rochell tweeted that the procedure went well, which Brown actually responded to with a praying hands emoji.

As for his own update, Brown went a different route. He posted a video of himself in the hospital saying, “I’m going to just assume the surgery went well. I was listening to Jill Scott. It felt like she was singing to me.”

Sean McVay was asked after practice if there was an update on the two rookies, but he didn’t have anything new to provide reporters.

“I’m not sure yet. That took place a little bit earlier, so I’ll get that update from Reggie after this,” he said.

On Saturday, McVay said Brown should be back within the week of having surgery because they can cast his hand, but the timetable on Rochell is much less clear.

Bobby Brown III shares hilarious tweets as he and Robert Rochell prep for surgery

Bobby Brown was in good spirits before undergoing surgery with fellow rookie Robert Rochell.

Rams rookies Bobby Brown III and Robert Rochell both went down with injuries in practice on Saturday, a disappointing blow for Los Angeles. Brown injured the UCL in his thumb and Rochell hurt his wrist trying to punch a ball out in practice, forcing both players to undergo surgery.

Well, they went under the knife on Monday but just before their procedures, Brown shared a few hilarious tweets from his hospital bed.

It all started with this first tweet to set the tone. A rookie mistake, one might say.

Then, he called out Rochell for screaming because he’s scared of needles.

And finally, Brown pulled back the curtain on his current situation in the hospital – quite literally.

Brown is going to give Sebastian Joseph-Day and Donte Deayon a run for their money as one of the funniest players on the team – and he’s only been with the Rams for about three months.
