Barcelona, Bayern agree to Robert Lewandowski transfer

After two months, Barca finally got their man

Barcelona have completed a drawn-out transfer saga, announcing “an agreement in principle” with Bayern Munich over a €50m move for Poland striker Robert Lewandowski.

Lewandowski, 33, has been Barcelona’s top transfer target for months, and the striker declared that he was done at Bayern back in May. Barca manager Xavi acknowledged that talks about a transfer even before that, and though the move has dragged on—Bayern held out for a €50m transfer fee that Barcelona, amid ongoing financial difficulties, didn’t want to meet—it is done in time for Lewandowski to join the Spanish side’s preseason tour of the United States.

Marca has reported that the final agreement is broken up between a €45m transfer fee and add-ons valued at €5m, and that Lewandowski’s contract runs for three years, with an option for the 2025-26 season. His salary is expected to be in the neighborhood of €9m. Barcelona’s announcement today says that the deal is still pending Lewandowski passing a club medical and all of the contracts actually being signed.

Lewandowski’s final season with Bayern was excellent, with the veteran marksman scoring 50 times in 46 competitive appearances with the German giants. In eight seasons in Munich, Lewandowski scored a staggering 344 goals in 375 games in all competitions, tacking on 72 assists to boot. Bayern won the Bundesliga in all eight of his seasons at the club, as well as the 2019-20 UEFA Champions Leagues, the 2020 Club World Cup, and three DFB Pokals.

Barcelona had some big names available at center forward in 2021-22, with Memphis Depay, Luuk de Jong and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang getting most of the minutes. However, the club lacked a dominant scoring presence, with Depay and Aubameyang leading the club with just 13 goals apiece. No one else scored more than seven goals.

Iga Świątek had the best reaction to meeting soccer legend Robert Lewandowski after her French Open win

What a cool scene between these two Polish stars.

At only 21-years-old, Polish tennis star and current world No. 1 Iga Świątek might have a bright career ahead of her.

Świątek (-800) beat Coco Gauff to win the French Open on Saturday and claimed a second title in three years at Roland-Garros. With that kind of resume at her age, it’s certainly fair to say she’s established some staying power in the tennis world.

Another Grand Slam title aside, it seems like nothing could’ve prepared Świątek for the surprise that waited for her moments after her win: She met Polish soccer superstar/legend Robert Lewandowski — who was in attendance as her fan — immediately after the victory.

How awesome. A long-time Polish legend in Lewandowski congratulates an up-and-coming Polish legend in Świątek — now the first Polish tennis player in history to win two Grand Slam titles. Does it get any better than that?

As it turns out: Yes! Check out Świątek’s reaction, who is, again, one of the best tennis players alive, upon meeting Polish soccer royalty:

Look at those smiles. Amazing. There are few things better in sports than two talented people from the same country being huge fans of one another.

Robert Lewandowski: My era at Bayern Munich is over

The superstar striker has been linked with a move to Barcelona

Robert Lewandowski has confirmed his intention to leave Bayern Munich, saying in no uncertain terms that he believes his time at the club is over.

Speaking at a press conference with the Poland national team on Monday, the 33-year-old made it clear he does not intend to play another game for the Bundesliga champions.

“My era at Bayern is over. I don’t see any possibility to continue playing for this club anymore,” the striker said.

“Bayern is a serious club and I believe they won’t keep me just because they can. I don’t want to play there anymore. A transfer is the best solution. I hope they don’t stop me.”

Lewandowski will see his contract expire at the end of next season, meaning Bayern would have to agree to sell him if he wishes to leave this summer.

Where could Lewandowski go?

The superstar forward has been linked with a move to several clubs across Europe, but Barcelona has recently emerged as the most likely destination after manager Xavi confirmed that negotiations over a transfer were underway.

“It is a possibility that he could come, yes,” Xavi said at a press conference earlier this month.

“He has said it publicly as well. There are negotiations, but it won’t be easy, he has a one-year contract with Bayern.”

The striker was asked about a move to Barcelona on Sunday by Eleven Sports, responding: “It depends on several factors. I think my situation is clear and there’s no point in talking about it. It’s hard to say if I will still play for Bayern next season.”

Lewandowski has just finished another stellar goal-scoring season, tallying 50 goals from 46 games in all competitions.

The 5 best destinations for Robert Lewandowski with a possible Bayern Munich break-up looming

Lewandowski and Pogba? Or Kante? Yes, please!

In the grand history of soccer, few have been as gifted at putting the ball into the back of the net as Robert Lewandowski. In 14 seasons between different clubs in Poland and Germany, the striker has potted 341 back-netters. To get to such a high mark, no one has ever enjoyed seven consecutive 40-goal campaigns — until Lewandowski.

And at only the age of 34 come the start of the next domestic season, Lewandowski has plenty of goals left to score. The question is: Will they come in his (still) current Bayern Munich uniform?

In the undercurrents, the Polish star has said he wants a new challenge outside of Bayern’s constraints. In other words, he is by no means “unhappy” but will move mountains to get what he wants as one of the best players in the world. This is in direct contrast to the sentiments of Bayern’s lead executive, Oliver Kahn, who, after a disappointing Champions League ouster, was quite emphatic that his Polish talisman will still be wearing Bayern red come August.

Suffice to say; I’ve seen this movie before. No matter the cost, no matter the headache: A player of Lewandowski’s caliber almost always gets what they want. Superstars in jerseys dictate the terms, not former stars (no disrespect, Mr. Kahn!) in suits.

As Bayern and most of the rest of the major soccer world moves to the summer and the potential transfer market, here are the five best potential destinations for one of the world’s truly elite players.

Bayern Munich and Robert Lewandowski might be out of gas after Champions League loss to Villarreal

A flat effort from Lewandowski and friends now has them on the edge.

Bayern Munich is undoubtedly the most successful modern team in German soccer. Since superstar goal scorer Robert Lewandowski joined the club in 2014, the Reds have won the Bundesliga three times (2016, 2018, 2019).

More impressively, they’ve failed to qualify for the Champions League Semifinals just two times (2017, 2018) — winning the arguable biggest international soccer tournament in the world (save for the World Cup) in 2020. It’s inarguable consistency that should be appreciated.

But for as much success as they’ve had recently, and for all the goals Lewandowski scores as the most prolific European scorer ever, eventually, your window slams shut. You lose your spark, and all seems lost.

You run out of gas.

After a stunning 1-0 upset at the hands of Villarreal (massive +464 underdogs) in the first leg of the Champions League Quarterinfals, that might be what’s happening to Bayern and Lewandowski this year.

They’re simply out of gas.

You see, with all due respect to the Villarreal players and coaching staff, they’re not exactly part of a club known for victory. At the moment, Villarreal possesses a 14-14-15 all-time win, loss, and draw record in the Champions League. Before 2021, the last time they even qualified for the tournament was a decade ago — when they failed to get out of the group.

So when they upset consistent powerhouse Bayern Munich, putting themselves in position for the Semifinals, and also keep Lewandowski off the sheet at the same time?

Yeah, that’s probably the biggest win in the team’s history.

Bayern had a 66-game scoring streak roll into 2022. Lewandowski himself scored in 19 straight games leading into September of last year. Suffice to say that it was a sloppy effort for the Reds and their Polish talisman.

They now stand at the edge of elimination in what might be near the end of Lewandowski’s tenure with Bayern. To a team that has seldom done this before. That is certainly not how the Reds drew it up.
