Lionel Messi is coming to MLS, and is instantly the league’s biggest-ever signing.

MLS history is littered with big global names, icons at the world’s biggest clubs, as well as lower-profile signings that changed the landscape of the league in ways over the years and even decades to follow their arrival.

Still, not even David Beckham — who is part-owner of Inter Miami, the club that Messi will be suiting up for in the near future — can match the global phenomenon that is Messi. The Argentina superstar, fresh off winning the 2022 World Cup, will transform the entire league, with commissioner Don Garber going so far as to say Messi could be the biggest athlete in U.S. sporting history. The stakes are that high.

It’s not like Messi is the first huge signing for MLS, though. Here are the top 10 additions to the league in its 28-year history.

“Mbappé, como persona no lo conozco muy bien. Como jugador es fantástico. Pero cuando pierdes la disciplina pierdes tu identidad. Por algo Zidane es Zidane. ¿Mbappé quiere imitarlo? Que empiece a querer progresar. No estar satisfecho”, dijo el jugador del Milán.

Eso sí, el sueco que disfruta de generar controversia, aceptó que no toda la culpa queda en Mbappé. Ahí fue cuando aprovechó para lanzarle una tajada a su padre:

“Cuando un niño se vuelve fuerte, puede ganar dinero fácilmente. Entonces sus padres se convierten en abogados, agentes, entrenadores… Pasan de una cosa, a ser otra. Y ese es el problema. Aquí es donde pierdes tu autodisciplina y tu identidad. Hoy con esta nueva generación, los padres, papá y mamá, quien tú quieras, creen que se han convertido en estrellas. Hablan en los periódicos. Pero ¿quién te crees que eres? Cállate. Depende de tu hijo, el jugador, trabajar y ser disciplinado”.

La verdad es que ahí tiene un punto. La decisión de permanecer en el PSG no fue solo de Mbappé, su padre y agente tuvo mucho qué decir al respecto y no es la primera vez que vemos la vida de un joven futbolista manejada por sus padres convertidos en representantes.

“Desde que me fui de Francia, todo ha ido cuesta abajo. Ya no hay nada de qué hablar en Francia. Francia me necesita, yo no necesito a Francia. Incluso si tienes Mbappé, Neymar y Messi, no te ayuda porque no tienes a Dios”, comentó Ibra.

Por lo que a sus 41 años todavía podría fichar para el PSG y darle nuevas alegrías a una afición que no olvida el paso del sueco por la Ligue 1 pues incluso sus números son mejores en la última campaña que los que registra Messi pues Zlatan marcó 50 goles y 19 asistencias en 51 duelos, mientras que Messi en la misma cantidad de duelos lleva 23 goles y 28 asistencias.

El AC Milan anunció este lunes la renovación de contrato de Zlatan Ibrahimovic por una temporada más hasta el 30 de junio del 2023.

El delantero sueco cumplirá 41 años en el próximo mes de octubre por lo que será uno de los futbolistas más longevos de la historia de la Serie A y de su equipo con el que salió campeón la temporada pasada.

“AC Milan se complace de anunciar la renovación del contrato de Zlatan Ibrahimovic hasta el 30 de junio de 2023. El delantero sueco continuará usando el dorsal número 11”, publicó el conjunto rossonero.

El salario que percibirá Ibra en este año será de un millón y medio de euros por la temporada aunque se fijaron ciertos bonos con base en objetivos trazados pro el club y el delantero.

Zlatan se recupera de una operación de rodilla izquierda que se practicó al concluir la temporada de la Serie A y se rumoraba no volvería a las canchas, sin embargo todo se aclaró con su renovación. ¡Qué grande eres Ibrahimovic!

Could this be the end of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s legendary career?

AC Milan has announced that the 40-year-old striker has undergone a knee operation and will miss 7-8 months, potentially spelling the end of the Swede’s long and decorated journey in the game.

“AC Milan announces that Zlatan Ibrahimović underwent an operation on his left knee carried out by Dr Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet, with the Club’s Medical Director Stefano Mazzoni in attendance, at the Hôpital Jean Mermoz in Lyon,” read a club statement.

“The arthroscopy had been planned for a while to definitively resolve the joint’s instability through the reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament, with lateral reinforcement and meniscus reparation.

“The operation was a complete success and the prognosis is estimated between 7 and 8 months.”

Ibrahimovic suffered a torn ACL while with Manchester United in 2017, with Wednesday’s surgery seeming to be in relation to that injury.

What’s next for Ibrahimovic?

Ibrahimovic has only just added yet another trophy to his massive collection, helping AC Milan win Serie A this season while scoring eight league goals.

Even before the announcement of his knee surgery, Ibrahimovic’s future was in doubt as his contract gets set to expire next month.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia after Milan’s title win, the striker said of his future: “When I feel good, then I’ll see what the situation is. I still feel that I can make the difference when I’m on the pitch. I don’t see another Ibra out there.

“I will make a decision over the next few days. I had a really tough time lately, it was bad both physically, but also for other personal matters. At the end of the day, I did everything I could to help Milan win this trophy.

“I was afraid that I might have to quit, but I want to do it my way.”

Over an incredible 23-year career, Ibrahimovic has won league titles in the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and France, while also winning multiple trophies with Manchester United. The striker also fired in 53 goals in just two seasons in MLS with the LA Galaxy in 2018 and 2019.

Puffing cigars, spraying champagne and flipping over tables, Zlatan Ibrahimovic celebrated AC Milan’s first Serie A title in 11 years exactly as you’d expect.

Milan clinched the title on Sunday by defeating Sassuolo 3-0 on Sunday, the club’s first Scudetto since the 2010-11 season.

At age 40, Ibrahimovic was still a major part of his side’s success this season, contributing eight league goals in addition to his usual larger-than-life dressing room persona.

Amid the celebrations, the Swede spoke to Sky Sport Italia and said: “It’s wonderful, I was here last time Milan won and 11 years later we win it and I’m here again.

“I arrived here making a promise and I kept it. Many laughed when I said that we’d win the Scudetto again, but we worked hard and showed the team what it means to suffer for your results.”

Ibrahimovic dedicates title to Raiola

Ibrahimovic also took a moment to dedicate Milan’s title to Mino Raiola, his longtime agent who passed away last month at the age of 54.

“I dedicate this to Mino, he was one of those who wanted me at Milan and told me I was the only one who could save Milan. I dedicate this trophy to him.”

The striker was coy on his playing future past the current season, but when asked what Raiola’s advice would be he quipped: “Let’s play another 10 years and steal more money!”

Milan’s celebrations continued into the dressing room, where Ibrahimovic gave an impassioned speech to his teammates that included a dramatic and well-timed table flip.

Fue en un tiro de esquina que Ibrahimovic le aventó toda la carrocería al defensor español que terminó tendido en el terreno de juego junto a Zlatan fingiendo que lo aventaron.

Increíblemente el delantero sueco no fue expulsado por la acción, ni con la ayuda del VAR pero la polémica se encendió tras unas declaraciones al medio británico The Guardian donde aseguró que lo hizo a propósito y lo volvería a hacer.

“Lo hice a propósito. No me avergüenzo porque hizo una tontería con uno de mis jugadores. No se hace eso, joder… No tienes huevos para hacerlo contra mí. Pero te voy a enseñar lo que pasa si me lo haces a mí. Por eso lo hice, para que entendiera. No fue algo bueno por mi parte, pero lo volvería hacer. Así soy yo”, dijo Ibrahimovic.

Aparentemente la agresión de Zlatan fue una especie de lección en el mundo del extravagante y talentoso delantero sueco.
