Juice Scruggs named on Rimington Trophy watch list

Penn State’s Juice Scruggs was included on the watch list for the nation’s top award for centers in college football.

Watch list season continued on Friday to send Penn State into the weekend with one of the top centers in college football being recognized by the Boomer Esiason Foundation.  Redshirt senior [autotag]Juice Scruggs[/autotag] was named on the watch list for the Rimington Trophy on Friday as Penn State hopes to secure its second all-time winner.

The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to college football’s most outstanding center. Scruggs is expected to be Penn State’s starting center for the upcoming 2022 season after showing his versatility on the offensive line at multiple positions. This year’s initial watch list for the Rimington Trophy included 40 of the top centers in all of FBS going into the new season, including five other centers from around the Big Ten.

Penn State has one previous winner of the Rimington Trophy, which was first awarded in 2000. A[autotag].Q. Shipley[/autotag] received the award in 2008, making him the fourth player from the Big Ten to ever win the award (Nebraska‘s Dominic Raiola was the inaugural winner of the Rimington Trophy in 2000 when Nebraska was still in the Big 12).

Alabama and Ohio State are tied for the most all-time Rimington Trophy winners with three each.

Last year’s winner of the Rimington Trophy was Tyler Linderbaum of Iowa.

New York, NY — Friday, July 22, 2022

The Rimington Trophy is proud to release its 2022 preseason Watchlist. This year, the Trophy committee worked with Pro Football Focus (PFF) to narrow down its list to the top 40 centers. PFF grades every player on every play of every game on how well they execute their given assignment. That play-by-play grading allowed the Trophy committee to create a watchlist based both on nominations from the schools and data provided by PFF. Once the season begins, schools will be able to nominate their centers for late addition based on in-season merit.

While more than a dozen All-America teams are selected annually, the Rimington Trophy committee uses these three prestigious teams to determine a winner:

•     Walter Camp Foundation (WCF)

•     Sporting News (SN)

•     Football Writers Association of America (FWAA)

Because the selectors of these three All-America teams can place centers in a “mix” of offensive linemen that includes guards and tackles, their 11-man first teams can often have two centers. The Rimington Trophy committee’s policy is to count all players that play primarily the center position for their respective teams as centers, even though they may be listed as guards or tackles on the All- America teams.

The center with the most first team votes will be determined the winner. If there is a tie with first team votes, then the center with the most second team votes will win. If there is still a tie, the winner will be determined by a majority vote from the Rimington Trophy Committee, provided with data from Pro Football Focus.

Olu Oluwatimi announced to Rimington Trophy Watch List

Glad he’s a Wolverine now!

After being a Rimington Trophy finalist last season, Olu Oluwatimi was named to the Rimington Trophy Watch List on Friday morning for the 2022 football season.

Oluwatimi has joined the Wolverines as a graduate transfer after playing for the Virginia Cavaliers the past three seasons. The 310-pound center started 32 consecutive games for Virginia and played 910 snaps in 2021 which was the most of an ACC center. Oluwatimi was the first Rimington Trophy finalist in Virginia’s program history, and he was also named a second-team All-American in 2021.

Last season, Iowa’s Tyler Linderbaum won the Rimington Trophy.

The Rimington Trophy worked with PFF to put together a top-40 center watch list for the coveted trophy. In 2021 PFF ranked Oluwatimi the third-best run blocking center when he posted a 90.2 grade.

The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding center in Division I College Football.

Dave Rimington, the award’s namesake, was a consensus first-team All-America center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982, during which time he became the John Outland Trophy’s only two-time winner as the nation’s finest college interior lineman.

Ohio State center Josh Myers named Rimington Finalist

Ohio State center Josh Myers was named one of three finalists for the Rimington Trophy on Tuesday.

Ohio State center Josh Myers was named one of three finalists for the Rimington Trophy Tuesday. The award has been around since 2000 and goes to the most outstanding center in college football annually.

Myers, a fourth-year junior out of Miamisburg, Ohio, flirted with going to the NFL after last season but ultimately decided to join fellow offensive linemen Wyatt Davis and Thayer Munford in returning for one more run at some pretty special things. He probably never imagined having a season like this one, but he’s still one of the tops in the country at his position.

Ohio State has churned out some of the best centers over the last few years, and it looks to continue. In fact, if Myers wins the award, it’ll be three times in the last five years that a Buckeye center has done so, joining Pat Eflein (2016) and Billy Price (2017).

Alabama’s Landon Dickerson and Tyler Linderbaum of Iowa are the other two finalists.

NEXT … What the Rimington Award says about Myers

Florida Gators center Brett Heggie named to Rimington Trophy Watch List

Florida’s redshirt senior isn’t just the top o-lineman on the team but among the best centers in the nation, as evidenced by his inclusion.

[jwplayer 9tjU7C84]

The Florida Gators football team has been humming along on offense so far this season, and despite a letdown in College Station last weekend in addition to a COVID-19 outbreak this week, there is still some good news for the Gator Nation.

Every snap starts in the hands of redshirt senior Brett Heggie, who was named to the Rimington Trophy Watch List on Friday for his exemplary play at the center position through the first three weeks of Southeastern Conference play.

Heggie was one of our players to watch for the Gators’ SEC Week 3 game against the Texas A&M Aggies after earning the SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week award for this performance in Week 1 against the Ole Miss Rebels. If he continues his superlative performance through the rest of the schedule, he could earn himself a place among the Gators greats at his position — perhaps the best since Maurkice Pouncey a decade ago.

The Rimington Trophy is awarded to the player considered to be the best center in college football. The Rimington Trophy is presented to the premiere centers in each of the following divisions: FCS, Division II, Division III, and NAIA.

Michigan State Football center Matt Allen named to Rimington Trophy Watchlist

Michigan State Football center Matt Allen has been named to the Rimington Trophy watchlist, given to the top center in the country.

[jwplayer 1tjDKyFK]

The Big Ten Football season is back! Which means watchlist season is also back! The latest Michigan State Football player to make a positional watchlist is center Matt Allen, who was named to the Rimington Trophy Watchlist.

The Rimington Trophy is given to the nation’s top center and named after Nebraska legend Dave Rimington. The Rimington Award was created in the early 2000s because there was no specific award to be given to the center position, which is a vital position in any offense. Rimington himself had won the Outland Trophy twice, which is given to interior linemen, but not specifically centers.

Matt Allen is a redshirt senior who will enter the season as one MSU’s top players and leaders.

Tyler Biadasz goes one for two at the College Football Awards

Wisconsin Badgers center Tyler Biadasz won the Rimington Trophy at the College Football Awards but came up short for the Outland Trophy.

For a kid who originally came to Madison as a lightly-recruited defensive lineman out of tiny Amherst, Wis. (population: 1,035), it’s safe to say things have turned out pretty well for Tyler Biadasz as a Badger.

Fours years after arriving on campus, he now finds himself universally considered one of the top offensive linemen in the nation and a likely first-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft. Nearing the end of his best (and likely final) season as a Badger, Wisconsin’s star center was a finalist for both the Rimington and Outland trophies at yesterday’s College Football Awards in Atlanta, Ga.

He came up short in his pursuit of the Outland Trophy (awarded to the nation’s top interior lineman), with Oregon offensive tackle Penei Sewell taking home that honor over Biadasz and Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown. However, he didn’t leave empty-handed.

Biadasz was recognized as the nation’s top center when he was awarded the Rimington Trophy on the red carpet before the awards show, coming out on top of fellow finalists Matt Hennessy (Temple) and Creed Humphrey (Oklahoma).

Biadasz is the first player from Wisconsin to receive the trophy since its inception in 2000.

“It’s absolutely an honor to be a part of this,” Biadasz said upon receiving the award, according to the press release from the Rimington Trophy. “To be recognized nationally with an award for your specific position, recognizing the work that you put into your craft, you feel really grateful. This award means a lot to me. Coach (Joe) Rudolph and Coach (Paul) Chryst took a shot on me. I had never played center. Now, to be recognized as the best in the country, that’s really unbelievable to me. I’m very grateful to them for how they’ve affected my life and helped me along the way.”

Biadasz will be officially honored as the award’s recipient at the 20th Annual Rimington Trophy Presentation at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, Neb. on Jan. 18.

Tyler Biadasz named a finalist for the Rimington Trophy

Wisconsin center Tyler Biadasz was announced on Monday as one of the three finalists for the Rimington Trophy.

After a stellar redshirt sophomore season in which he was a consensus First Team All-Big Ten selection and graded out as the nation’s top center by Pro Football Focus, Tyler Biadasz entered the 2019 campaign with plenty of hype as potentially the best player at his position in all of college football.

Biadasz has fully lived up to those lofty expectations this season, earning first-team all-conference honors for the second year in a row while blasting open holes for the Big Ten’s No. 2 rushing offense, looking like a possible first-round NFL draft pick in the process. After Monday’s announcement that he has been named one of the three finalists for the Rimington Trophy, he’ll have a chance to officially earn the title of the nation’s best center.

The Rimington Trophy is awarded each season to the most outstanding center in the FBS. The winner is chosen by determining the consensus All-American center pick from the All-American teams selected by the Walter Camp Foundation, Sporting News and the Football Writers Association of America. The player with the most first-team votes from those three teams wins the Trophy.

In addition to Biadasz, the trio of finalists includes Matt Hennessy (Temple) and Creed Humphrey (Oklahoma). The winner will be announced on Jan. 18, and should Biadasz be named the recipient of the Trophy, he will be the first Badger to take home the award in its 19-year history.

Along with Oregon left tackle Penei Sewell and Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown, Biadasz is also one of the finalists for the Outland Trophy, awarded to the nation’s best interior lineman on offense or defense. The recipient of that award will be announced on Thursday.
