Sixers waive Ricky Council IV, David Duke Jr. after preseason finale

The Philadelphia 76ers announce hat they will waive Ricky Council IV and David Duke Jr. after the preseason finale.

The preseason is over for the Philadelphia 76ers and they need to shape their roster for the start of the 2023-24 season. It is time for the front office to make those tough decisions as the team prepares for another title run.

After Friday’s win over the Atlanta Hawks in the preseason finale, the Sixers announced that are waiving undrafted rookie Ricky Council IV and David Duke Jr. Council was on a two-way deal. Duke was on an Exhibit 10 deal.

One has to assume the two will end up with Philadelphia’s G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats. Council offers a great deal of athleticism while Duke has NBA experience and has shown he can shoot.

Neither Council nor Duke played any minutes in the preseason finale against Atlanta. If they head to Delaware, they will receive playing time with the Blue Coats.

Jaden Springer has some advice for Sixers rookies about the G League

Philadelphia 76ers guard Jaden Springer has some advice for the team’s rookies about how to handle the G League.

WILMINGTON, Del.–Another season means another crop of rookies to help groom and develop for the future.

The Philadelphia 76ers did not have any picks in the 2023 NBA draft, but they were able to bring in some undrafted players on some two-way deals.

The Sixers brought in Terquavion Smith, Ricky Council IV, and Azuolas Tubelis on two-way deals after the conclusion of the draft. Those three players will likely spend the majority of their rookie season in the G League with the team’s affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats.

Jaden Springer has spent most of his first two seasons in the NBA toiling in the G League. He shared some advice for the rooks as they get set to begin their NBA journey.

“Terq and Ricky, they asked me about G League a couple times, so I was just telling them when you go there, that’s where you get better,” Springer explained. “Just work on your game. They’ve been around all preseason, so they’re gonna take what we learned here just bring it to the G League. Go hard and just attack with the right mindset. You’re gonna be great.”

Smith, Council IV, and Tubelis were able to get valuable experience in the summer league and the goal now is to carry that to Delaware and continue to grow. They can take lessons from Springer who was a 2023 G League champion and G League finals MVP.

“Springer plays hard on both ends, so it’s a lot you can take from Springer,” said Smith. “Just by him always playing hard, and he’s always giving it his all when he’s on the court. So I feel like we can take that from him and carry it on.”

Sixers enjoy seeing Patrick Beverley as a coach during team scrimmage

The Philadelphia 76ers enjoyed having Patrick Beverley as one of the coaches in their Blue X White scrimmage on Saturday.

WILMINGTON, Del.–The Philadelphia 76ers convened at the Chase Fieldhouse in Wilmington, Delaware to put on their Blue X White scrimmage for the fans. The Chase Fieldhouse is home to their G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats.

The Sixers divided up the teams and they had the veterans sit out. Joel Embiid, Danny Green, and Patrick Beverley coached Team Melton while Tobias Harris and PJ Tucker coached Team Maxey. All five coaches had their own style, but Beverley’s stood out.

Beverley was running up and down the sidelines, barking out orders to players while also getting into it with officials. It looked like Beverley has a future in coaching at some point after he decides to hang up his sneakers.

“Pat actually wants to coach and I’m not surprised that he took the board and was ready to go and took it fairly seriously,” said coach Nick Nurse. “He does want to coach. He sends me some things from time to time in the summer with youth teams he’s coaching etc.”

Beverley is a guy who is not afraid to let his voice be heard and his thoughts known. That was on full display on Saturday as he was even on the court at times to give his team a spark.

“I feel like Pat Bev will be a great coach,” said rookie Terquavion Smith. “He’s got good energy. He don’t want nothing but the best. So I think Pat Bev would be a good, solid coach. Well, my type of coach.”

In terms of his intensity, Beverley might have to tone it down a bit to be a coach.

“Pat Bev was on the court too much,” laughed rookie Ricky Council IV. “I ran into him one time.”

Nurse also had some advice for his veteran if he does get into coaching: don’t be so animated.

“He might need to work on that a little bit,” Nurse laughed. “Probably a little too animated. Out on the court a little too much, too, maybe, but other than that, it’s good.”

The Sixers will head to New York on Monday to take on the Brooklyn Nets to continue the preseason.

Seven Pro Hogs see action in first NBA preseason games

Seven former Arkansas Razorbacks saw significant action in NBA preseason games on Monday night. Here’s how they fared.

Football and postseason baseball typically dominate the October headlines, but what can sometimes get lost in all of that is the beginning of basketball season.

Last week, this year’s Arkansas basketball team put on their annual Red-White Showcase in front of 6,000 fans in Barnhill Arena. This week, former Razorbacks will take the floor as NBA preseason games began on Sunday afternoon and Monday night.

Player grades: Tyrese Maxey plays well, Sixers fall to Celtics in preseason

Tyrese Maxey plays well, but the Philadelphia 76ers fall to the Boston Celtics in the preseason opener.

The Philadelphia 76ers began the preseason schedule on Sunday with a visit to where their 2022-23 season ended: the TD Garden. The Sixers took on the Boston Celtics with a lot less on the line as both teams look to prepare for the upcoming season.

The Sixers played without Joel Embiid, James Harden, De’Anthony Melton, and Furkan Korkmaz as coach Nick Nurse wanted to see what he has in other pieces. He knows what he has in Tyrese Maxey as the young guard went to work early and often in this one to the tune of 24 points. The Sixers did drop this one to the Celtics 114-106.

Tobias Harris added 13 points and seven rebounds, Patrick Beverley had 12 points, Jaden Springer added 14 points and five rebounds, and Kelly Oubre Jr. had six and four rebounds.

Here are the player grades following the preseason loss:

Recapping additions the Philadelphia 76ers made in 2023 offseason

Here is a recap of the moves made by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2023 offseason to add to their roster.

The 2023-24 season is right around the corner for the Philadelphia 76ers with training camp beginning on Oct. 3 and the season getting underway on Oct. 26. Thus will begin another 82-game adventure in Sixers history and now is the time to begin previewing the upcoming season.

Philadelphia was limited in what they could do in the 2023 offseason with everything hinging on the James Harden situation. It has been a tumultuous summer for the franchise as The Beard made it clear that he wants out and the Sixers had to focus on trying to resolve that situation.

To recap, here are the moves the Sixers made to add to their roster for the 2023-24 season:

Black shines in first NBA Summer League action

Anthony Black did Anthony Black things in his first Summer League action on Saturday for the Magic.

Anthony Black has always turned heads with his play, and he did it again on Saturday evening in his first NBA Summer League game.

Playing the Detroit Pistons, his Orlando Magic fell to the Detroit Pistons 87-78, but Black was impressive throughout.

He had 17 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and shot 70 percent from the field.

Meanwhile, Ricky Council IV was impressive as well in his game. He had 14 points, 8 rebounds, an assist and a block while shooting 5 for 11.

His 76ers defeated the New York Knicks 110-101.

Several Razorbacks make NBA Summer League debuts

Ricky Council IV and Nick Smith Jr. got their first NBA Summer League action on Monday night.

The NBA Summer League is now in full effect, and Ricky Council IV and Nick Smith Jr. both got their first action on Monday night.

Council IV, who signed a two-way contract with the Philadelphia 76ers after the draft concluded, had 11 points and six rebounds, but his team lost 94-92 to the Memphis Grizzlies.

He also had this highlight dunk, which Razorback fans got very accustomed to seeing last season.

Smith Jr. had 12 points on 5 of 14 shooting for the Charlotte Hornets after he was one of their first round selections two weeks ago.

He was second on the team in scoring behind Alabama’s Brandon Miller, who had 18.

His three assists were tied for a team-high, but he also had four turnovers in 29 minutes as the Hornets lost 98-77 to the Spurs.

Jaylin Williams was also playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder, who defeated the Jazz 95-85.

Williams was chairman of the boards, pulling down 13 while contributing 8 points and three assists in 28 minutes.

Ricky Council IV goes undrafted in 2023 NBA Draft, signs two-way contract with 76ers

Ricky Council IV wasn’t selected in the 2023 NBA Draft, but signed a two-way contract with the 76ers immediately after.

[autotag]Ricky Council IV[/autotag] just missed out on being the fourth Razorback selected in the 2023 NBA Draft. Council went undrafted, but was one of the first players to sign a contract at the night’s conclusion. He signed a two-way contract with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Council transferred to Arkansas from Wichita State ahead of the 2022-23 season and flourished with an increased role as a primary offensive option. After averaging 12.0 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.1 steals in 2021-22 with Wichita State, Council maintained that level of production with more responsibility this past year in Fayetteville.

He appeared in all 36 games for the Razorbacks and averaged 16.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.1 steal over 34.1 minutes per night.

Black and Smith are for sure going to be taken in the first round. Walsh and Council IV are hoping to be taken in the second, with the earlier the better.

If all four players are selected, it will be the first time since 1992 that the Razorbacks have had that many taken in one draft.

Here are an assortment of final mock drafts for all four players:
