Seahawks ‘won’t shut the door’ on a potential Al Woods return

Despite releasing the veteran defensive tackle earlier this week, the Seahawks aren’t ruling out the possibility of re-signing DT Al Woods.

Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider provided some insight into this week’s release of veteran defensive tackle Al Woods during his weekly radio show on Seattle Sports 710 am.

“Al’s situation was really cash and cap,” Schneider said, simply. “Everybody has a cash budget in the NFL that you need to work within, and every team is probably slightly different. Although it may show if you go to like websites or whatever and say, ‘Hey, where are the Seahawks with their salary cap?’ There’s a lot of budgeted items that fall into that as well when you talk about incentives, premium roster bonuses, injuries.”

Woods isn’t the only defensive lineman from last season Seattle parted ways with this year. The Seahawks also cut Quinton Jefferson and Shelby Harris, allowed L.J. Collier to join the rival Cardinals and have yet to re-sign Poona Ford.

Still, there remains a chance Woods could return to the Seahawks for his fourth stint in Seattle.

“So there’s a ton of different accounting mechanisms that go into this thing, and we just felt that at this time while we wouldn’t shut the door on Al coming back, we needed to create some space to try to get something done,” Schneider continued. “We’re still working through some of those issues in how we can use that cap room and the cash effectively.”

Schneider and Co. did manage a huge get during the first wave of free agency, securing former Bronco Dre’Mont Jones on a three-year deal and bringing back a familiar face in Jarran Reed. Perhaps the next reunion could be with Woods for the right price.

“We were aggressive, so you have to balance yourself out,” Schneider explained. “And Al’s an amazing person, amazing player, great leader. Those calls are not fun. Those are the tough decisions that we have to make in order to just keep moving this thing forward.

“And like I said, both (Pete Carroll) and I spoke with Al and we won’t shut the door on his return.”

Ezekiel Elliott is one free agent the Saints should avoid

Recently-released Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott is a great player, but he’s also one free agent the New Orleans Saints should try to avoid:

We know the New Orleans Saints are looking for help at running back — they struggled to play the style of run-first football Dennis Allen envisioned last season, and now they’re going into 2023 with a lengthy suspension looming for Alvin Kamara, who hasn’t been as effective in recent years without a quality player to split carries with. Now that free agency has begun in earnest, it’s easy to connect some dots. Just don’t try and connect the Saints to Ezekiel Elliott.

Sure, on paper, the move makes a certain kind of sense. Elliott is the most accomplished running back on the market. He also would not factor into the 2024 compensatory draft pick formula after being let go by the Dallas Cowboys. That appeals to teams like the Saints, who could receive the maximum four comp picks in next year’s cycle. Elliott can lead a backfield without shaking up any long-term plans. Plus, he’s a former Ohio State Buckeye and college teammate of Michael Thomas and Marshon Lattimore. The Columbus-to-New Orleans pipeline is well established.

But Elliott might be cooked. He’s twice led the league in rushing attempts (in 2016 and 2018), and he’s only averaged fewer than 15 carries per game once, when he paced 13.9 each week in 2021. He and Mark Ingram are the only active players with more than 1,800 career rushing attempts. The Cowboys ran him into the ground and then cut him loose once his production tailed off. Jerry Jones’ loyalty to homegrown talent is well known, but even he wasn’t able to justify keeping Elliott around any longer.

The Saints need to be getting younger and more dynamic at running back. There’s still a role in this league for a short-yardage specialist and reliable pass protector like Elliott, but he doesn’t fit the job description New Orleans should be consulting. There are similar free agents available like former Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets running back James Robinson, who is three years younger than Elliott with 1,300 fewer career carries (and who also won’t cost the Saints a comp pick). Elliott’s resume might be enticing, but it’s also a turnoff.

Seahawks GM John Schneider reacts to news of Bobby Wagner’s release

Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider reacted on air to the report of linebacker Bobby Wagner’s release from the rival Rams.

Some news broke on Thursday just in time to get a reaction from Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider during his new weekly radio show on Seattle Sports 710 am.

The Rams parted ways with hometown favorite and former Seahawks linebacker, Bobby Wagner. Wagner had just completed the first season of his five-year contract.

Immediately fans began to call for Wagner to return to the Seahawks.

“A Seattle favorite,” Schneider told Dave Wyman and Bob Stelton. “He’s an amazing player, an icon, Hall of Fame player and all that.”

While Wyman and Stelton attempted to probe Schneider further on the possibility of a Wagner reunion, Seattle’s GM was quick to silence the conversation.

“He’s not released yet, he’s not on the waivers, so congratulations to whoever scooped that,” Schneider said. “He’s still technically on their roster so we won’t be able to speak to his agent for a minute or two – which is actually himself . . . so.”

So . . . this story is definitely one to keep an eye on!

Chiefs release CB Chris Lammons from 53-man roster

The #Chiefs waived CB Chris Lammons from the 53-man roster on Monday.

The Kansas City Chiefs made an interesting roster move on Monday.

According to the NFL’s daily personnel notice, the Chiefs have released veteran CB Chris Lammons from the 53-man roster. Lammons’ 322 snaps on special teams during the season were the most by any player in Kansas City and just as recently as this past week, Lammons tied for the most snaps on special teams. 2022 marked Lammons’ third season with the Chiefs, with 42 game appearances, mostly playing special teams in that span.

Lammons was wanted and charged in connection to the assault that took place involving New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara in Las Vegas last year. He still faces a suspension pending the results of that ordeal. He was not tendered an ERFA contract this offseason as result, but he eventually rejoined the team in after mandatory minicamp with a spot on the 90-man offseason roster. He earned a spot on the 53-man roster outright out of the preseason.

The team has not yet made a corresponding roster move, but this opens up a roster spot for them to bring back one of RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire or TE Jody Fortson from injured reserve for the AFC Championship Game. Both players have been designated to return, but neither has been activated to the 53-man roster. Considering that Lammons was mainly a special teamer, that might be a good sign for Fortson, who has played 181 special teams snaps so far this season.

Chiefs release RB/WR Jerrion Ealy from practice squad

The #Chiefs have terminated the practice squad contract of RB/WR Jerrion Ealy.

The Kansas City Chiefs have released a former undrafted free agent signing from their practice squad.

According to the NFL’s personnel notice for Tuesday, the Chiefs have terminated the practice squad contract of RB/WR Jerrion Ealy. The former Ole Miss product signed as an undrafted free agent with Kansas City following the 2022 NFL draft. He played receiver, running back and special teams during the offseason and preseason, finding his way onto the initial practice squad after 53-man roster cuts.

The NFL would suspend Ealy for six games beginning in early October for violating their policy on performance-enhancing substances. He was reinstated following Week 10 of the 2022 NFL season. He didn’t appear in a single game for the Chiefs during the NFL’s regular season.

There is a possibility that this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Ealy, as this is the time of the year that teams begin signing players on reserve/futures contracts. The team could later re-sign him on one of those deals if they so choose.

Ealy’s departure opens up a space on the 16-man practice squad for Kansas City as they’ve yet to make a corresponding move. It’s possible that they could bring in a veteran at a position of need for the upcoming playoff run. We’ll keep you apprised of any developments with that practice squad spot as the practice week begins on Wednesday.

Packers release wide receiver Amari Rodgers

The Packers released wide receiver and punt returner Amari Rodgers, a third-round pick in the 2021 draft.

The Green Bay Packers released wide receiver and punt returner Amari Rodgers on Tuesday.

Rodgers, a third-round pick of the Packers in the 2021 draft, fumbled away a punt return against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday and was immediately benched in favor of cornerback Keisean Nixon.

The turnover was the last straw for a struggling player who couldn’t stop creating negative plays.

The Packers traded up in the third round to take Rodgers out of Clemson with the 85th overall pick.

Over two seasons and 26 games, Rodgers caught eight passes for 95 yards, rushed one time for 11 yards, and returned 40 punts for 305 yards and 17 kickoffs for 321 yards. He fumbled seven times, including five this year.

The Packers also released running back Kylin Hill, a seventh-round pick in the 2021 draft.

Chiefs release WR Corey Coleman from practice squad

The #Chiefs have created a spot on the practice squad by releasing veteran WR Corey Coleman.

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to make changes to their practice squad.

A day after learning of WR/RB Jerrion Ealy’s suspension and re-signing WR Marcus Kemp, the Chiefs have released veteran WR Corey Coleman from the practice squad per the NFL’s daily personnel notice.

Coleman had signed to the team’s practice squad after Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season. A former first-round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2016 NFL draft, Coleman spent time on the Chiefs’ offseason roster trying to jump-start his career.

The veteran receiver hasn’t appeared in an NFL game since the 2018 season. In 2019, Coleman suffered an ACL injury that took him out for the year. In 2020, he spent the majority of the season on the practice squad with the Giants. In 2021, he was suspended for six games for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

What will the Chiefs look to do with Coleman’s spot on the practice squad? They’ll be at no shortage of options when it comes to veteran wide receivers if they decide to go that route. The Houston Texans cut former Chiefs draft pick Chris Conley. The Arizona Cardinals cut their former second-round pick Andy Isabella. The New England Patriots cut former first-round pick Laquon Treadwell

It’s possible that this move was done preemptively with more roster moves related to the 53-man roster on the horizon.

Chiefs release K Matt Ammendola from practice squad

The #Chiefs have terminated the practice squad contract of Matt Ammendola after two weeks of filling in for Harrison Butker.

After a disappointing performance in the team’s Week 3 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, the Kansas City Chiefs have terminated the practice squad contract of kicker Matt Ammendola per the NFL’s daily personnel notice.

The team signed Ammendola to the practice squad after a six-kicker tryout that included Colts K Chase McClaughlin. He filled in for Harrison Butker over the past two weeks as the starting kicker deals with a severe ankle sprain.

In his first week against the Los Angeles Chargers, Ammendola was perfect on extra points and field goals. In Week 3 in Indianapolis, he struggled with consistency on both extra points and field goals, missing one each. The inconsistencies led to a fake field goal call on fourth-and-long that wasn’t successful.

Andy Reid suggested that a change might be coming, even though he didn’t have an update on Harrison Butker’s availability for Week 4.

“I can’t tell you that right now,” Reid told reporters on Monday. “Brett (Veach) is mulling through all of that and working through it right now.”

Ammendola will end his tenure in Kansas City appearing in two games, recording 3-of-4 on extra points and 3-of-4 on field goals. He also had 10 kickoffs with six touchbacks.

It’s unclear if the Chiefs plan to bring in more kickers for tryouts or if they expect Butker back in Week 4. There’s also a chance that Justin Reid could play some role in their plans. Regardless, they’ll have someone other than Ammendola in there against the Buccaneers on Sunday night.

Chiefs to release WR Daurice Fountain

The #Chiefs have made a surprising move, releasing WR Daurice Fountain in 53-man roster cuts.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a surprising move in their cuts to get to 53 players.

According to KC Star beat writer Herbie Teope, the Chiefs have released WR Daurice Fountain from the 53-man roster. Fountain spent the 2021 NFL season on the practice squad in Kansas City and was a call-up to the 53-man roster twice in the playoffs due to his special teams ability.

Fountain was the team’s receiver with the second-most yards this preseason behind Justin Watson. He looked to be in a groove offensively and still had a role on special teams. It’s possible the Chiefs could seek to bring him back on the practice squad if he doesn’t catch on with another team.

Many expected Kansas City to go with six receivers this season, but this move suggests that just five (Smith-Schuster, Hardman, Valdes-Scantling, Moore and Watson) could be on the 53-man roster.

Chiefs to release WR Josh Gordon

The #Chiefs have released veteran WR Josh Gordon as they continue to trim their roster.

The Kansas City Chiefs are continuing to trim their 53-man roster ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero the Chiefs have released veteran WR Josh Gordon. The former 2012 supplemental draft pick by the Cleveland Browns never truly caught on or got comfortable with the offense in Kansas City after joining the team a few games into the 2021 NFL season. By the end of the year, he was a healthy scratch twice and eventually was released and signed to the practice squad.

This offseason proved to be more of the same from Gordon, who struggled with on-field consistency in the midst of strong competition at the Chiefs’ WR position on the roster. He’s been a strong presence in the locker room and the community as Pelissero reports, but the football of it all makes him an odd man out during roster cuts. He’ll finish his time with the Chiefs with just 5 receptions for 32 yards and a touchdown in seven starts and 12 games played.
