Clemson adds four-star edge defender to 2023 class

Clemson added its fourth 2023 commitment on Wednesday, and it’s a huge get for the Tigers.

Clemson gained its fourth 2023 commitment on Wednesday after four-star edge David Ojiegbe selected the Tigers over Maryland, Miami, Michigan and North Carolina.

According to 247Sports Composite, the 6-foot-3 defensive end is the 20th edge in the class of 2023. Ojiegbe’s commitment comes just under two months after the Tigers offered the high school junior on March 5.

With Ojiegbe’s commitment, the Tigers now have the 23rd 2023 class, according to 247Sports. Along with Ojiegbe, Clemson has received commitments from four-star quarterback Christopher Vizzina, four-star wide receiver Nathaniel Joseph and three-star tight end Reid Mikeska.

With defensive ends Xavier Thomas and K.J. Henry gone after the 2022 season, Ojiegbe will join the Tigers at a time when those two spots will need to be filled.

Three-star tight end committs to Clemson

Clemson has added a third recruit to its 2023 class with a three-star tight end out of Cypress, Texas.

One day after Clemson landed 2023 four-star quarterback Christopher Vizzina, three-star tight end Reid Mikeska has committed to the Tigers.

The 6-foot-6 233 pounder selected Clemson over 42 other schools, including Alabama, Miami and LSU. The Tigers offered Mikeska a scholarship on March 5 after an in-person visit.

Out of Bridgland High School, Reid is ranked as the country’s No. 22 2023 tight end. As a junior, Reid had 229 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 24 receptions.

Along with Reid and Vizzina, four-star wide receiver Nathaniel Joseph joins the Tigers’ class of 2023 class, which is now No. 31 overall in 247Sports Composite team rankings.

Reid will have an opportunity to learn under rising sophomore tight end Jake Briningstool, who had an impressive performance in Clemson’s spring game.

‘It’s a great place to be’: Mikeska details commitment decision with TCI

A day after landing the crown jewel in its 2023 recruiting class, another domino has fallen for Clemson.

Bridgeland (Texas) four-star tight end Reid Mikeska committed to Clemson on Wednesday night over schools like Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, LSU, Miami, Michigan State, Texas Tech, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina and Florida.

Mikeska talked about his decision to commit to Clemson in an exclusive phone interview with The Clemson Insider Tuesday.

“I definitely like the coaches there, the culture they have,” he said. “I’m a huge fan of Dabo Swinney and Coach (Kyle) Richardson. The culture definitely stood out to me. Coach Swinney takes care of his players after football, during football. It’s a great place to be if you wanna play football.

“Coach Richardson, we’ve had a great relationship for a while now. They’ve all been showing lots of love, Coach Richardson, Swinney, (offensive graduate assistant Andrew) Shipman and Tajh Boyd. They’ve all been amazing to me and my family.”

Mikeska is unsure if he would’ve committed had he been at Clemson’s Orange & White Spring Game this past Saturday as he had originally planned. His flight kept getting delayed and ultimately ended up getting canceled. Instead, Wednesday was just a day that fell in place as Mikeska feels more than ready to take this leap of faith.

He called Richardson and FaceTimed with Swinney on Sunday night to inform them of his decision.

“They were very happy and very excited,” he said.

If you’ve followed our recruiting coverage, we first identified Mikeska as a potential option for Clemson in an article that was penned on Jan. 29.

Shortly thereafter, Mikeska set a campus visit and received an offer from Clemson on Saturday, March 5, while on campus for the Tigers’ junior day. That’s when Mikeska identified Clemson as his top school and now, it’s slowly progressed to this point.

“Their tight end coach followed me and reached out and he was going to watch my film and keep in touch,” Mikeska said in a text message to TCI on Monday, Jan. 10. “That’s about it so far. Clemson is a dream school for me, so that was exciting.”

Three months and 93 days later, Mikeska is a Tiger.

“It’s definitely surreal because it all happened pretty fast,” he said. “I’m definitely very happy with it though. I’m very blessed for this awesome experience.”

What is Mikeska bringing to Clemson’s tight ends room?

“Just versatility, the ability to play all aspects of the tight end position,” Mikeska said. “I can block, run, catch, pretty much just do it all. They usually run 11-personnel, so I gotta come in and compete, but if on the field, they can put me in line or at h-block or a slot.”

Mikeska is planning to take his official visit from June 3-5. He will sign with Clemson during the early signing period in December, along with Christopher Vizzina, and will be a mid-year enrollee.

“We kind of got the class started,” he said. “Me and Vizzina. Once they see us commit, it’ll kind of get the ball rolling.”

A top Clemson target in the 2023 class has set his commitment date.

Bridgeland (Texas) four-star tight end Reid Mikeska announced via social media Tuesday that he will announce his commitment Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT (7 p.m. ET).

Mikeska (6-6, 233) is ranked as the No. 22 tight end in the 2023 class, per Rivals.

Clemson extended an offer to him on March 5, when he was on campus for the Tigers’ “spring elite day”.

“Easily one of my top schools, for sure,” Mikeska said to TCI after the visit. “They definitely helped themselves with this visit. They were already one of my top schools without offering me and I saw the campus and they offered. So, that moves them up even higher.”

Mikeska also told TCI that Clemson feels like he’s a “perfect fit”.

“They’re recruiting me really, really hard,” he said. “They just feel like I’m a perfect fit, student-wise, player-wise and person-wise for the team, program and school. They’ve been pursuing me really hard and I appreciate it because I definitely think Clemson is a top school for me.”

Mikeska dropped his top-12 schools list on March 27, and included Clemson, of course, along with Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, LSU, Miami, Michigan State, Texas Tech, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina and Florida.

The Insider Report: Latest on Vizzina, nation’s No. 1 LB, Klubnik’s former teammate & more

It’s time for this week’s edition of The Insider Report. We hope everyone had a great weekend. Top QB target set to make monumental decision Tuesday On the eve of a monumental announcement for Clemson’s top quarterback prospect in the 2023 …

It’s time for this week’s edition of The Insider Report.

We hope everyone had a great weekend.

Top QB target set to make monumental decision Tuesday

On the eve of a monumental announcement for Clemson’s top quarterback prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, The Clemson Insider is calling for Tuesday to be a sunny day in Tiger Town.

Briarwood Christian (Ala.) four-star quarterback Christopher Vizzina announced Sunday that he will be announcing his college decision come Tuesday afternoon. The talented signal-caller is ready to announce his decision, as he will choose between Clemson, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Auburn, Ohio State and Georgia.

We have gathered enough information to make our sunny forecast for Vizzina, who made two visits to Clemson this past week.

After reaching the Elite 11 finals with his performance at Carrollton High School on Sunday, April 3, Vizzina made his way down to Clemson, where he took in spring practice that following Monday.

Clemson checked all the boxes for Vizzina again, but he wanted to head home to Birmingham and digest the visit before making any potential decision. While he indicated to us that he didn’t know when his next trip to Clemson would be, he made an unannounced visit for the team’s Orange & White Spring Game on Saturday, April 9.

Now that Vizzina is ready to announce his decision, we know that those two visits definitely played a big factor in his decision-making.

Remember, we have long-maintained that Vizzina was and has been the top quarterback on Clemson’s board for quite some time now. While the particular session of Dabo Swinney Camp wasn’t open to the media, we’ve long been told that Vizzina went toe-to-toe with Arch Manning in a “throw-off.”

Both Swinney and Brandon Streeter let Vizzina know that day that he had moved up in their respective class of 2023 quarterbacks rankings and was a top-five guy for them both.

While Clemson only offered the five-star quarterback out of Isidore Newman (New Orleans, La.) that day, Vizzina’s performance, his undeniable moxie and the way he carries himself made a lasting impression on the Tigers.

So much so that Swinney decided to pull the trigger on an offer for Vizzina, even when they still were very much involved in the Manning sweepstakes. Mutual interest between the two sides has since waned and Vizzina quickly and not so quietly became Clemson’s main and only focus.

Every time he meets with Clemson’s head coach there’s not only a big emphasis on Vizzina being “his guy,” but that he’s a “perfect fit” for the Tigers as well.

We have long identified Vizzina as an option for Clemson, even dating back to when he held a handful of Power Five offers from schools like Duke, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Kentucky, Michigan State and Mississippi State.

His trajectory from camp star to top target didn’t happen overnight, but between him being in attendance for Clemon’s season-opener against Georgia in Charlotte and Streeter making consistent visits to Briarwood, it was only a matter of time before he was realized as one of Clemson’s top options.

Clemson was one of the first schools to show interest in Vizzina and it was because of his left tackle, who is now at Clemson, Trent Howard.

In a conversation with TCI in February, Briarwood head coach Matthew Forester recalled back in 2020 during the shutdown when he was at home and former Clemson defensive tackles coach and recruiting coordinator Todd Bates called. Bates asked Forester to tell him about his quarterback.

After Tuesday, the rest will likely be history.

The latest on 4-star WR, Klubnik’s teammate

Following Saturday’s Orange & White spring game, TCI spoke to Westlake (Texas) 2023 four-star wide receiver Jaden Greathouse, who made his way to Clemson for his first-ever campus visit.

Greathouse is the former high school teammate of Clemson freshman quarterback Cade Klubnik.

“It was great to spend time with all the coaches,” Greathouse said. “I got to view campus and all that. I got to hang out with Cade a little bit too. I got to have a private meeting with Coach (Tyler Grisham) afterward. I was there pretty late around 8ish. We were just talking and all that stuff. They didn’t offer me and they want me to come back up in the summer.”

Before his visit, according to Greathouse, Clemson told him that they don’t offer until you come up and see campus. He was kind of expecting to get an offer once he got up there. Greathouse said he “probably will” get back up to Clemson this summer.

“(Coach Grisham) told me that he wanted to offer me, but Coach Swinney told him to wait because they want to see me run routes for them before,” he said.

Greathouse still needs to take a couple of visits and see where he is in his recruitment before he gets back to Clemson. Though, he said if the timing works, he’ll “definitely” aim to get back up to Clemson again and keep working on that.

Update on the nation’s top-ranked LB

The nation’s No. 1 linebacker in the 2024 class returned to Clemson for another visit last week.

Jefferson (Ga.) High School five-star Sammy Brown was back on campus last Wednesday to take in the Tigers’ final spring practice before Saturday’s spring game. It marked his second trip to Tiger Town in as many months as he was also on campus March 12, when he became the first class of 2024 prospect to receive an offer from the Tigers.

TCI caught up with the 6-foot-2, 220-pound rising junior following his latest visit to Clemson.

“We got there just in time for team meetings and then watched their practice. Afterwards we went and ate dinner with Coach Goodwin (defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Wes Goodwin),” Brown told The Clemson Insider. “It was an overall great visit. The practice was more preparation for the spring game than anything, so it was a really chill day. Great to catch up with Coach Goodwin and others.”

Brown said the main message he took away from his conversations with Goodwin and Dabo Swinney is that the Tigers remain really interested in him but want him to take his time as he goes through the recruiting process and enjoy seeing different schools. They also told him to just keep working in high school and stay focused on that for the time being.

Before visiting Clemson on Wednesday, Brown went to Georgia the prior weekend to watch its scrimmage and also visited Alabama last Monday, when he picked up an offer from the Crimson Tide. Following the Clemson visit, he traveled to Oklahoma on Friday and said he might make it to Ohio State but is still figuring that out.

As for when he will be back at Clemson, Brown – who has been camping at Clemson since he was 10 years old – said he will try to participate in the Swinney Camp again this June and possibly even get back on campus before then.

The plan for Brown, he said, is to probably have a top-five schools list sometime during his junior year and then make his commitment sometime after that.

“As of right now still just taking everything in,” Brown said of the recruiting process. “We wanna be able to see as much as possible before we make a decision so we know that we’re making the best decision.”

Brown is considered a five-star prospect by the 247Sports Composite, which ranks him as the No. 1 linebacker and No. 9 overall prospect in the country for the 2024 class.

Clemson in a great spot with top DE target

Among the headlining visitors on hand for Saturday’s spring game was David Ojiegbe, a four-star defensive end in the 2023 class from St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C.

From what we have gathered, Ojiegbe’s visit to Clemson on Saturday went very well, and Ojiegbe himself told us that he enjoyed his time while on campus for the game.

If you saw TCI’s story on Ojiegbe entering the spring game visit, you know that the Tigers were already, in his words, “definitely at the top” of his list going in, and we believe Saturday’s visit only strengthened Clemson’s standing with him.

Ojiegbe also visited Clemson for the program’s second junior day of the year in early March, when he scored an offer from the Tigers. He is ranked as high as the No. 18 edge defender and No. 162 overall prospect in the 2023 class by 247Sports.

Ojiegbe – who goes to the same high school that Clemson redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Tre Williams attended – explained to TCI recently why he is so high on Clemson.

“Just the family environment and just how it’s a small school and (defensive ends) coach Lemanski (Hall) is a players’ coach,” Ojiegbe said. “I’ve been talking to Coach Wes too and he’s been giving me good vibes, talking about the scheme and everything. He’s a very down-to-earth guy, I like how he coaches. He seems like a player-coach also. I also have my boy down there, Tré Williams, I have a good relationship with him, so I definitely feel like I’d be at home down there. I liked it a lot. I liked Coach Dabo.”

Ojiegbe is in the process of narrowing down his recruitment and told us he’s currently focused on schools like Miami, North Carolina, N.C. State, Michigan, Maryland and LSU, in addition to Clemson.

Update on 4-star Texas TE Reid Mikeska

We wanted to give an update on a four-star class of 2023 tight end from the Lone Star State who was slated to attend Clemson’s spring game but couldn’t end up making the trip.

Bridgeland (Texas) High School’s Reid Mikeska was supposed to be at the spring game, but his flight got canceled.

TCI learned through a source that Clemson felt good about its chances with him heading into the planned visit. The source was unsure whether the visit would lead to a commitment from Mikeska, but the Tigers felt good about their chances with him, especially since he already considered Clemson one of his top schools coming off his visit for Clemson’s “spring elite day” on March 5, when the Tigers offered him.

“Easily one of my top schools, for sure,” Mikeska said to TCI after the visit. “They definitely helped themselves with this visit. They were already one of my top schools without offering me and I saw the campus and they offered. So, that moves them up even higher.”

Mikeska dropped his top-12 schools list on March 27, and included Clemson, of course, along with Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, LSU, Miami, Michigan State, Texas Tech, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina and Florida.

Top TE target says Clemson feels like he’s a ‘perfect fit’

The Clemson Insider caught up with Clemson’s top tight end target shortly after he got off the phone with coach Dabo Swinney Wednesday. Clemson continues to reinforce the message to Bridgeland (Texas) four-star Reid Mikeska, that he is a priority for them in the 2023 recruiting class.

“They’re recruiting me really, really hard,” Mikeska said. “They just feel like I’m a perfect fit, student-wise, player-wise and person-wise for the team, program and school. They’ve been pursuing me really hard and I appreciate it because I definitely think Clemson is a top school for me.”

How has Mikeska’s relationships with Swinney and tight ends coach Kyle Richardson developed over the past month or so, since he was last on campus?

“I think Coach Swinney is the best coach in college football, personally,” he said. “He cares for every single one of the players, the players’ families, everything like a good guy would do. Coach Richardson is the same way. I probably talk with him the most out like any coach. I’ve developed a really good relationship with him as well. I think really highly of both of them. Those are definitely guys that I do want to play for and my parents want me to play for.”

Mikeska said that he is looking to make it back up to Clemson sometime this spring, but if circumstances don’t prevail, he’ll 100% be back in Tiger Town this summer.

Since he was in Clemson last, Mikeska has made visits to Florida, Alabama, Auburn, South Carolina and UNC. He’s also added offers from Florida State, Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Washington State, LSU, Nevada, Florida and Alabama.

Every time you look on social media, Mikeska is reporting a new offer.

“It’s definitely unreal,” he said. “My goal for the beginning of the season was to try to get an offer from (the University of Houston) like that was my ultimate goal. I just wanted an offer from UH so bad because I felt like that was a realistic program since I live in Houston. That was kind of what I was aiming for and now I have offers from Alabama, Clemson and teams like that. It’s crazy.”‘

Mikeska said he has his top five schools in mind, which he will likely release at a later date. He dropped his top-12 school’s list on March 27, and included Clemson, of course. He continues to maintain that Clemson is currently one of the top schools in his recruitment.

2023 TE recruit an intriguing prospect for Florida’s depleted corps

This 2023 recruit could help the Gators rebuild its tight end room back to glory.

The tight end position for Florida has quickly become a contentious topic as injuries have decimated a corps that not long ago was among the best in the business. A potential career-ending injury sustained by redshirt freshman [autotag]Gage Wilcox[/autotag] in spring practice combined with redshirt freshman tight end Nick Elksnis and sophomore tight end Jonathan Odom also joining him in the trainer’s room has the Gators teetering perilously near the edge at a position that has become increasingly important in the modern game.

Long gone are the days of [autotag]Kyle Pitts[/autotag], who now hauls in passes for the Atlanta Falcons, while 2021 starter [autotag]Kemore Gamble[/autotag] entered the transfer portal and headed down the turnpike to join the UCF Knights for the 2022 campaign. While the Gators did sign three tight ends in the 2023 class, it behooves the program to ensure a long-term pipeline of talent at the position.

One of Florida’s options when it comes to cultivating the next crop of student-athletes is three-star tight end [autotag]Reid Mikeska[/autotag] out of Cypress (Texas) Bridgeland, who has been reported to have high opinions of the Orange and Blue under new head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] after a visit to campus on April 2.

“It was my first time in Gainesville and I really enjoyed it,” he told Swamp247. “Had a lot of fun. They’re definitely a school very high up on my list.”

Mikeska’s primary point of contact has been tight ends coach [autotag]William Peagler[/autotag], who was the one who extended an offer to him recently. The 6-foot-5.5-inch, 233-pound prep had some encouraging words to say about him.

“I’m a real big fan of coach Peagler,” Mikeska said. “He was kind of with us the whole day. He’s a really smart coach. I definitely think he’s a coach that can develop me.”

The Lone Star State prospect ranks No. 436 overall and No. 24 at tight end nationally according to the 247Sports Composite, while the On3 Consensus ranks him at No. 533 and No. 26, respectively. Neither publication has a lead school in his recruitment but On3 has nine programs — including Florida — listed at 8.1% in its predictions.

Coveted TE recruit quickly sets Florida visit date after receiving offer

Three-star tight end Reid Mikeska quickly scheduled a visit to Florida after he received an offer earlier this week.

Florida wasn’t planning to take any tight ends in the 2023 recruiting cycle after it inked three players in coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag]’s transition class. However, the Gators have changed their tune after depth issues have arisen following [autotag]Nick Elksnis[/autotag] and [autotag]Jonathan Odoms[/autotag]’ injuries that will cause them to miss the rest of spring. They currently only have one healthy scholarship tight end left.

With Florida’s change of plans, coach [autotag]William Peagler[/autotag] has delivered several scholarship offers to prospects. One recipient is three-star [autotag]Reid Mikeska[/autotag], and after giving the green light, he is slated to visit the Swamp this weekend.

247Sports ranks Mikeska as the 428th overall prospect and the 23rd best at his position. The Cypress, Texas, native hauled in 24 catches for 229 yards and four receiving touchdowns during his junior season.

Mikeska looks forward to putting Peagler’s name to a face when he comes to campus this weekend. He told Swamp247 that he has a good relationship with him so far and has communicated with him for a few months before Peagler gave him the good news.

He also recently dropped a top 12 that included the Gators. Mikeska hopes to make a commitment before the start of his senior season and wants to use his official visits in June.

Bridgeland High School (Cypress, Texas) four-star Reid Mikeska is down to Clemson, Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, LSU, Miami, Michigan State, Texas Tech, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina and Florida,

Among the headlining visitors in attendance for Clemson’s “spring elite day” — the Tigers’ second junior day of the year was Mikeska, the nation’s No. 22 ranked tight end, per Rivals.

Mikeska was presented with a scholarship offer by Dabo Swinney during his first visit to Clemson.

“It was incredible,” he said of receiving an offer from Clemson’s head coach. “It didn’t even feel real. It was surreal and it’s probably one of the coolest moments of my life. It meant a lot to me and my family for him to do that because it was late at night and it was on his time, so it was really cool.”

Now that Mikeska has the offer he was working towards, where do the Tigers currently stand in his recruitment?

“Easily one of my type schools, for sure,” Mikeska said. “They definitely helped themselves with this visit. They were already one of my top schools without offering me and I saw the campus and they offered. So, that moves them up even higher.
