Week 4 Big 12 Roundup: Oklahoma State leads the way

The Big 12 Conference had all 10 teams in action on Saturday. Oklahoma State stayed ahead of everyone as the lone undefeated team.

It was another wild weekend in the Big 12 Conference. The Texas Longhorns started the day by losing to Texas Christian at home. The fun in the conference didn’t stop there. As it sits right now, the two teams who needed strong showings are sitting closer to the bottom of the conference, setting up a wild Red River Shootout in the Cotton Bowl.

Oklahoma loses its second straight game for the first time since 1998

Last year in Norman, the Iowa State Cyclones came within a point of the Sooners. It was a wild 42-41 win for Oklahoma as it marched toward the Big 12 championship and another College Football Playoff appearance. This time, the Cyclones were held off the Sooners 37-30.

In this contest, Spencer Rattler had a chance to lead a late rally. However, the game-tying pass attempt was picked off in the end zone with less than two minutes left. Using Breece Hall, the Cyclones ran out the clock. Brock Purdy was much better in this game than in the previous two weeks. Now Iowa State shares the lead in the Big 12 with a 2-0 conference record.

Oklahoma State steamrolls Kansas

The Kansas Jayhawks didn’t put up much of a fight against the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Lawrence. The Cowboys, playing without Spencer Sanders, had everything working. Chuba Hubbard looked like the player many thought might make a run at the Heisman Trophy. He averaged 7.3 yards per carry. Tylan Wallace also had a monster game.

Kansas looked like, well, Kansas. It was held scoreless until the game was over. In the fourth quarter, it got on the board with a touchdown from Velton Gardner. The Les Miles experience isn’t looking so great as it starts Year 2. The Cowboys won 47-7.

Kansas State wins the battle of backup quarterbacks

When the game started, the big matchup was Skylar Thompson against against Alan Bowman of Texas Tech. Neither quarterback finished, as the backups were asked to win this game. Thompson and Bowman combined for a total of 17 passes.

Henry Colombi led Texas Tech back into this game after it was shut out in the first half. Tech even led late in the second half. However, Kansas State made the plays when it needed. Deuce Vaughn once again made a big play that helped seal the win. Kansas State joined Oklahoma State and Iowa State atop the Big 12 Conference standings.

West Virginia survives overtime to beat Baylor

It was quite the low scoring affair. They were tied at halftime and again at the end of regulation. West Virginia scored first in each half on 1-yard touchdown runs only to see the Bears tie it up. Josh Fleeks of Baylor caught a 34-yard pass for a touchdown with just 1:19 remaining to force the extra session.

Jarret Doege threw two touchdowns in the overtimes to help WVU. However, the interception in the second overtime by Charlie Brewer sealed the deal. All the Mountaineers had to do was score at that point. The loss put Baylor in a tie with West Virginia, Texas and Texas Christian for fourth in the conference.

Red River Shootout: Texas and Oklahoma fighting for their lives

The outcomes of the Texas Christian and Iowa State games set up a wild game in the Cotton Bowl. The Longhorns and Sooners come in with a combined 1-3 record in the conference. Spencer Rattler has thrown interceptions on back-to-back weeks that essentially ended the game. Sam Ehlinger is coming off his worst performance through three games. Something has to give in Dallas.

Red River Shootout: Ronnie Perkins to play against Texas

Lincoln Riley has been in the process of getting DE Ronnie Perkins eligible and has pulled it off just in time for the Red River Shootout.

Before last season’s blowout loss to LSU in the College Football Playoff, Oklahoma’s impact defensive end Ronnie Perkins was suspended after failing a drug test. He has missed the Sooners’ first two games of the season and will not play on Saturday against Iowa State.

Head coach Lincoln Riley has been in the process of getting Perkins eligible and has pulled it off just in time for the Red River Shootout.

According to Jason Kersey of The Athletic, Perkins will be with the team in Ames on Saturday night and “should be ready for Texas next week.” Despite traveling with Oklahoma, the defensive end is in sweats and will be on the sidelines.

Perkins has recorded 75 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss, and 11 sacks in two seasons for the Sooners. Widely considered Oklahoma’s best defensive player, Alex Grinch’s pass rush is getting an instant boost.

Against the Longhorns last season, Perkins recorded five tackles and one sack.

Prior to Saturday night’s matchup against Iowa State, Oklahoma recorded five sacks, four of which came against FCS opponent Missouri State. Perkins will change the dynamic of the Sooners’ defensive line.

Texas will play in the annual Red River Shootout against Oklahoma in Dallas on Oct. 10. Left tackle Samuel Cosmi and right tackle Christian Jones’ job just became a whole lot harder.

Reggie Bush predicts that ‘Texas will beat Oklahoma’

During the halftime of the Oklahoma and Kansas State game, Fox analyst Reggie Bush made a bold claim that Texas will win.

During the halftime show of the Kansas State and Oklahoma football game on Fox, the team of analysts discussed Texas and OU. The two teams are set to face off in the Cotton Bowl two weeks from Saturday. With how Spencer Rattler looked in the first half with two interceptions, they discussed if the Texas Longhorns could beat the Sooners when they meet up in Dallas.

Brady Quinn was a bit more on the side of prove it to me. The Longhorns have historically stumbled in games that they shouldn’t. That has been on display over the last several years. Last season the loss to Texas Christian was one of those games.

Urban Meyer was positive about the Texas Longhorns team due to the hire of Chris Ash. Meyer has spoken highly of Ash at every opportunity, even going as far as to call him the best assistant/coordinator hire in all of college football. He was Meyer’s right hand man and defensive coordinator when they won a National Championship at Ohio State.

Reggie Bush discussed the Longhorns and his focus was on senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger. Bush mentioned Ehlinger going through his progressions and finding his receivers to make this offense more potent. He even had a bold claim with the game just 14 days away.

On Oct. 10, fans will find out a lot about both teams. Head coach Tom Herman is looking to even his regular season record against the Sooners with a 1-2 record as it sits now. The young gun Spencer Rattler and the experienced gunslinger Sam Ehlinger look to get the leg up on their Heisman campaigns.

Big 12 gives update on Texas-Oklahoma, conference championship game

COVID-19 has brought uncertainty to the 2020 CFB season. The Big 12 announced plans and gave updates on UT-OU + Big 12 Championship game.

COVID-19 has brought uncertainty to the 2020 college football season. The Big 12 was the final Power Five conference to announce their plans but did so Monday night. The conference is going to a 9+1 scheduling format, giving the Longhorns the usual Big 12 schedule plus a nonconference game.

There had been concern over the annual Texas-Oklahoma game after the State Fair of Texas announced it was canceled. However, it seems as if the Longhorns and Sooners will still be meeting in Dallas this season.

According to The Athletic, as long as it is safe to host, the historic Cotton Bowl will still be the site of the Red River Shootout. The matchup has been played in Dallas since 1929 and is one of the best events in all of sports.

After reports of a home and home series emerging, The Athletic is reporting those ideas have been shut down and will luckily not be happening.

Multiple sources have also indicated that Oklahoma and Texas still intend to play their rivalry game at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, provided it’s safe to do so, and likely with limited capacity, despite the cancellation of the State Fair of Texas. Sources said neither side is interested in scheduling a home-and-home arrangement instead.

As for the Big 12 Championship, the conference remains flexible for when the game can be played. It is currently scheduled for Dec. 5 but Bob Bowlsby could delay it by a week to Dec. 12.

Worst case possible, the championship game could not only move dates but also locations. Dec. 19 is still a possible date for the conference championship game but would need to be moved to Globe Life Field.

Texas high school football championships are scheduled for AT&T Stadium Dec. 16-19 and the Dallas Cowboys have a home game on Dec. 20. With no room for a college football game, the Big 12 would move across the street to the Texas Rangers’ brand new indoor stadium.

The Big 12 is expected to be flexible in its approach to its December conference title game, which Bowlsby previously discussed with The Athletic. That game is currently scheduled for Dec. 5 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and could be rescheduled for Dec. 12 if necessary.

If the Big 12’s title game must get pushed to Dec. 19, multiple sources have indicated the title game could move to nearby Globe Life Field, the Texas Rangers’ new $1.2 billion ballpark, if there are scheduling conflicts. The UIL Texas high school football championships for class 1A-4A are scheduled for Dec. 16-19 at AT&T Stadium, and the Cowboys are scheduled to host the 49ers on Dec. 20.

Texas is currently scheduled to play Oklahoma in Dallas on Oct. 10. With the Big 12 expected to move the start date of the season back, the Longhorns will be waiting for a new schedule.

Big 12 Football: Ranking the Toughest Non-Conference Schedules in 2020

Before conference play begins for the Big 12, each of the 10 teams will play three non-conference games. Athlon Sports ranked each conference team in order, based on the difficulty of their non-conference schedule.

In general, Big 12 teams don’t have a reputation for scheduling aggressively. The upcoming season puts that perception to the test.

All 10 teams have at least one Power 5 opponent lined up. (Yes, even Baylor.) Road trips by Big 12 teams to places like Baton Rouge, West Point and Berkeley dot the calendar. A couple of programs have set up high-profile games at neutral sites to start the year.

Assuming the teams are playing, it all sets up for a fun September around the league.

Here are the full rankings:

  • Oklahoma
  • West Virginia

Oklahoma football commit, Texas player get into Twitter fight

On July 4, Oklahoma received a commitment from Austin native, Latrell McCutchin. A four-star cornerback, he and a couple of Texas players began a Twitter beef, as our colleagues at SoonersWire wrote about.

The trash talk began early for Oklahoma commit Latrell McCutchin.

Ranked a four-star recruit and the No. 66 player in the nation by Rivals, the cornerback committed to Oklahoma over Alabama on July 4. His commitment marked the first of two big recruiting wins for head coach Lincoln Riley last Saturday.

McCutchin began his Oklahoma career early, tweeting “Texas SUCKS!!! Ahhhh, felt good to say that,” just two days after his commitment.

Colin Shields Sure Would Like to Play QB at Oklahoma State, but Will Likely End Up Somewhere Else

Colin Shields would likely sit behind Spencer Sanders on the Oklahoma State depth chart and other top quarterback prospects. Pokes Report on Sports Illustrated discussed how he will likely need to commit elsewhere to play immediately.

He said he would like to play for Cowboys, but he knows the situation and the line of quarterbacks that are there. He has other options, but did say Oklahoma State was really the only school that he would consider a preferred walk-on invitation.

He’ll be worth watching this season. His video looks good and he was one of the sharpest and most accurate quarterbacks that we saw in Shawnee on July 8.

Tom Herman lays out what it will take to knock off Oklahoma

In a recent interview with the DMN, Tom Herman said they are “well aware” of Oklahoma and laid out how UT is looking to get over the hump.

Since 2015, Oklahoma has won the past five Big 12 championships, running through the conference. Since the reintroduction of the Big 12 Championship game in 2017, the Sooners have won those games by an average of two touchdowns. Nobody has been close to dethroning Lincoln Riley’s squad.

Texas had its shot in the 2018 Big 12 Championship game after winning the Red River Shootout during the regular season by three. In the second matchup, Oklahoma was too much to handle, winning by 12.

In a recent interview with Chuck Carlton of the Dallas Morning News, Tom Herman said they are “well aware” of the Sooners and laid out how the Longhorns are looking to get over the hump.

It will begin with “a continued effort to recruit elite talent,” Herman said.

Since the first full recruiting cycle Herman had with Texas in 2018, Texas has had better classes than Oklahoma in all three years according to 247Sports. The Longhorns have topped the Big 12 in recruiting since Herman’s arrival, but have failed to turn it into success on the field. He admits Texas must develop the talent to see results on the field.

The next step is a bit out of Herman’s control, citing the quarterback play for Oklahoma has been outstanding since his arrival in 2017.

“Hopefully one of these days they’ll stop having first- and second-round draft picks at quarterback,” said Herman. “But we’ve played draft picks, that’s certainly not an excuse at all, we’ve played draft picks at quarterback damn near every week, but those three guys they’ve had in the last three years were special — really, really special.”

Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, and Jalen Hurts been superstars for the Sooners, with the first two winning the Heisman trophy and Hurts finishing in second place last season. Lincoln Riley’s arsenal at quarterback has been lethal, making Oklahoma the most unstoppable offense in the conference.

Sadly, it will not get any easier for Herman and Co., as former five-star quarterback Spencer Rattler is expected to take over this season. Coming out of high school, he was the top-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the country.

After Rattler, the Sooners are expected to sign Caleb Williams, the fifth-ranked player in the 2021 recruiting class.

As Herman mentions though, the quarterbacks should not be used as an excuse. Texas will be facing quality players week in and week out, no matter the opponent. No matter who the quarterback at Oklahoma is, the Longhorns have to find a way to keep them in check.

For the first time since Mack Brown, it feels as if Texas can compete year in and year out with the Sooners. However, competing does not mean winning, and Herman knows the Longhorns need to start picking up wins against the rival.

“We feel like we’re building something here that is sustainable and that rivalry is going to be, on a national perspective, I still think it’s the greatest rivalry in all of college sports because of the venue, because of the two states, because of the history of it,” said Herman. “We’ve got to do our part in making sure that we win some more of those battles.”

In the battle of Tom Herman vs Lincoln Riley, the Sooners’ coach has a 3-1 advantage, including that 2018 Big 12 title. Always the biggest game of the season for both teams, the rivalry is getting bigger every year.

Texas will their first shot at Oklahoma on October 10 this season. With new coordinators on both sides of the ball for the Longhorns, the Sooners will be seeing a new Texas team.

With Sam Ehlinger returning for his senior season and the defense returning up to nine starters, the Longhorns are in prime position to extend upon their 62-48-5 Red River Shootout series lead.
