MLS Madness spreads nationwide as league breaks goalscoring record

MLS was, even by MLS standards, completely bonkers Saturday night

Summer in MLS can be a rough time. You’re too far away from the real pressure of making or missing the playoffs, it’s hot and humid everywhere, teams are figuring it out after transfer window moves. It can feel very much like everyone’s biding their time for September and October.

Not August 6. MLS Madness™ took hold in nearly every corner of the country, with goals galore, teams scoring and conceding in the deepest depths of stoppage time, big-name stars scoring bangers, and everyone basically went bananas. It was a perfect advertisement for the league: fun, flawed, weird, and inexplicable.

For one thing, MLS broke a league record for goals scored in one night. Across 13 games Saturday night, teams combined for 57 goals, an average of well over four per game. The old record of 46 was left in the dust.

As the league itself once said, This Stuff Kicks!

In chronological order, let’s go through one of the wildest nights in MLS history:

Real Salt Lake’s Damir Kreilach may miss the rest of the 2022 MLS season

The RSL captain had surgery for a back injury, and has no timetable on his return.

Damir Kreilach may be done for the year, as the Real Salt Lake captain underwent back surgery on Thursday.

Kreilach, 33, has barely played this season for RSL, with a calf injury robbing him of the early weeks of the season before this more recent back issue. His last appearance came over six weeks ago, as RSL lost 6-0 to NYCFC.

Speaking to Utah radio station ESPN 700, RSL coach Pablo Mastroeni said there was no official timetable for Kreilach’s return. “It’s a huge spectrum,” said Mastroeni on the potential recovery time Kreilach faces. “Typically it’s about three months, best case scenario.” Mastroeni later said that “there’s no timeline on it” from his perspective.

“If it’s this year, it’s fantastic,” said Mastroeni. “If it’s not, it’s still fantastic knowing that he’s been able to overcome a nagging back injury that’s been plaguing him this season.”

Despite playing numerous positions, Kreilach has been arguably RSL’s most important player over the past few seasons, and is coming off of an outstanding 16 goal/9 assist 2021. Mastroeni said that Kreilach will be in Salt Lake City to do his rehabilitation work in conjunction with the RSL medical team.

Jozy Altidore, Donovan Mitchell call for Real Salt Lake owner to sell team after controversial comments

“He needs to sell the team,” said Jozy Altidore. “I’m involved in a group that’s ready to purchase it. Time for change.”

Real Salt Lake was one of the MLS teams that refused to play on Wednesday night, part of a boycott that crossed leagues, including NBA, WNBA, and MLB. Their refusal to play stemmed as a response to the shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man who was shot in the back seven times by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

On Thursday, Real Salt Lake owner Dell Loy Hansen gave an interview to a local radio show in which he said the team’s refusal to play showed “disrespect [that] was profound to me, personally.”

He went on to say that “it’s taken a lot of wind out of my sails on how much I want to invest in the team…buying players and building the team.”

Hansen also seemed to suggest that the protest would lead to him not inviting fans back to the stadium, and would force him to furlough and fire people … again. (He already furloughed staff during the start of the pandemic.)

Pro athletes across Utah and the rest of MLS spoke out quickly and forcefully against Hansen.

Perhaps most stunningly, Toronto FC and USMNT striker Jozy Altidore said that if Hansen wasn’t willing to invest in the team, he had an ownership group ready to buy the team … now.

Altidore wasn’t the only professional athlete to speak out against Hansen. Both Donovan Mitchell and Mike Conley Jr. of the Utah Jazz tweeted about it, with Mitchell reiterating that Hansen should sell the team.

MLS may find itself in a tough position here. Hansen has owned the team since 2013, and while I doubt they’d push him out after one interview, if he’s publicly posturing that he will not invest in the team nor try to make them better, that’s a problem for the product they’re trying to put out.

As to whether or not Altidore has a group ready to buy an MLS side, I wouldn’t doubt it. We can argue about MLS’ long term longevity, but people with money want in on this league while it’s still growing.

Prediction

San Jose Earthquakes 1, Real Salt Lake 0

Moneyline (ML)

SAN JOSE (+110) has been rolling along, and is expected to dump Real Salt Lake (+250). The Earthquakes rolled up six goals in Group B stage play, going 2-0-1 with a plus-3 goal differential. RSL limped through Group D play with a win, a draw and a loss, pumping in two goals while conceding two. RSL’s defensive play will it in the match, but the Earthquakes will be able to do enough to bounce Salt Lake from the bubble.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 2.5 (+105) is an attractive play, as Real Salt Lake has played suffocating defense throughout this tournament. RSL’s offense isn’t tremendous, which is a great recipe for Under plays. The past four meetings in this series have each hit the Under, too, including two 1-0 results and a scoreless draw in the previous three.

Prediction

Minnesota United 2, Real Salt Lake 1

Moneyline (ML)

MINNESOTA UNITED (+150) is a slight favorite over defensive-minded Real Salt Lake (+165) in this one. United stunned Sporting KC Sunday with two goals in stoppage time in the second half, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win. United will take that momentum and energy and parlay it into a second consecutive win in the bubble, taking a less circuitous route to a 2-1 victory this time around. If you are feeling the 2-1 exact score in favor of Minnesota, it pays +900, by the way.

A winning $10 wager on Minnesota United (+150) returns a $15 net profit. A $10 wager on Minnesota winning by the exact score of 2-1 (+900) would pay $90.

Over/Under (O/U)

The line is OVER 2.5 (-154). Over bettors were treated to an amazing finish in Minnesota’s opener, while Under bettors were shaking their heads after a monumental bad beat. Look for at least three goals in this one, as Minnesota has plenty of firepower and it is missing two key defenders.

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Friday at 12:50 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Colorado 2, Real Salt Lake 0

Moneyline (ML)

Real Salt Lake (+130) is a slight favorite in this rendition of the Rocky Mountain rivalry, but the smart money is on COLORADO as a +195 dog. The Rapids started the 2020 regular season with 2-1 wins over DC United on the road and Orlando City SC at home. Salt Lake opened with an 0-0 draw at Orlando City and a 1-1 home draw with New York Red Bulls.

Salt Lake won four of the last five meetings between the two clubs at an aggregate score of 14-2, but the Rapids started out much improved in 2020 with four different goal scorers while getting 12 of 27 shot attempts on goal through two games. Real Salt Lake hit the target on just six of 19 shots in their opening two matches.

Real Salt Lake has dominated this rivalry series to date, but the two sides have met too many times for such a stark difference. Look for Colorado to get one back here at a solid value.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on Colorado to win returns a profit of $19.50.

Over/Under (O/U)

The best bet in this one is UNDER 2.5 total goals at -112, while the Over is just -118. Real Salt Lake’s first two games of the season saw a total of just two goals, while Colorado’s had six total goals scored.

Scoring is down to open the MLS is Back Tournament. The rust from the long pause in play coupled with the importance of the rivalry game in this Group D contest will mean a tight affair.

Real Salt Lake at Orlando City SC: MLS odds, betting lines and picks

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Thursday at 10:40 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Orlando City SC 2, Real Salt Lake 1

Moneyline (ML)

ORLANDO CITY SC (+105) is a good play on their home pitch against the visitors, traversing the country to play in the heat and humidity of South Florida. Orlando has picked up two wins and two draws in the previous five meetings with Salt Lake.

Orlando closed out the 2019 regular season failing to win in their final eight matches, but they’ll be able to do enough in front of the faithful at Exploria Stadium to get the 2020 campaign off on the right foot.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 2.5 (-139) is worth a small-unit wager, perhaps in a parlay with Orlando City SC on the 3-way line. Orlando scored at least two goals in each of their final three home outings last season, and they allowed at least two goals in five of the final six. The Over is a good bet.
