New England Revolution terminate Jozy Altidore’s hefty contract

Altidore’s next move is unclear

Jozy Altidore’s rocky time with the New England Revolution is over.

The Revolution announced Thursday that they had bought out the former USMNT striker’s contract, ending an unproductive stint at Gillette Stadium roughly a year and a half before it was due to expire.

“The New England Revolution have released forward Jozy Altidore and exercised the club’s one buyout on the player’s salary budget charge. Altidore will no longer occupy a spot on New England’s roster,” read a short statement from the club announcing the move.

Per salary information released by the MLS Players Association, Altidore’s 2023 guaranteed salary was $2,939,963. That figure is the highest salary for any USMNT-eligible player in the league.

An unhappy time with New England

Altidore’s arrival via MLS free agency in 2022 initially saw the Revolution enthusiastic enough about the target man that they extended the contract he signed with Toronto FC through the end of the 2024 season.

However, things quickly went awry. Altidore was competing with two Designated Players, Adam Buksa and Gustavo Bou, for minutes while Bruce Arena often deployed a 4-2-3-1 formation. While Altidore had a goal to his name by the third game of their 2022 campaign, he never managed to push his way into a starting role.

That goal would prove to be his only strike for the Revolution that season, and while he was a frequently-used substitute, he ended up securing a half-season loan to Puebla in Liga MX. There, things didn’t go much better: Altidore appeared in just six of Puebla’s 12 league matches (scoring twice) and was an unused substitute in all three of their playoff games.

Altidore returned to MLS for the 2023 season, but his situation remained unchanged. Altidore appeared in 10 of New England’s 17 regular season games, but scored just one goal in a paltry 195 minutes played.

USMNT striker stock watch: Josh Sargent is back!

Remember when Josh Sargent was the USMNT’s top striker? Those days may be returning.

The U.S. men’s national team is set to play a pair of friendlies in Europe later this month as part of their final preparations for the 2022 World Cup.

First, the USMNT will face Japan in Germany on Sept. 23, then it will take on Saudi Arabia in Spain on Sept. 27. With just two matches remaining for the U.S. until the World Cup begins, there’s not a lot of time left for experimenting or introducing new players.

With that being the case, USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter has hinted that strikers who already have experience in the national team might have an advantage over guys who are still trying to break into the squad.

“What we’re trying to do [is] look at the profile who fits what we’re trying to do the best,” Berhalter said at a Nike event in New York last week, via Steven Goff of The Washington Post. “It may not be the best forward … it’s just what we think fits our team.”

So, who fits the team best?

The latest installment of our USMNT striker stock watch series is dropping now ahead of the release of the September friendlies roster, with players ranked 1-4 considered the most likely candidates for call-ups this month.

Jozy Altidore scores again as he embraces super-sub role for Puebla

The veteran forward is adapting well to life in Liga MX

Jozy Altidore scored his second goal for Puebla on Thursday, as he came off the bench to secure a valuable 1-1 draw at Querétaro.

Altidore came on with 28 minutes left and his team down a goal. In the 75th minute the veteran American received the ball and turned sharply atop the box before sending a low, scuffed shot into the corner.

The striker now has two goals in six appearances for Puebla, all of which have come as a substitute.

That total has surpassed his total of one goal with the New England Revolution, which the 32-year-old left in July to join Puebla on loan through the rest of 2022.

With so many USMNT strikers in form, Altidore’s chances of a late World Cup roster push still seem remote — especially as he continues to come off the bench. But at the very least, he is showing he hasn’t lost his goalscoring touch.

¡Voz autorizada!

Jozy Altidore scores first Puebla goal in second appearance

The veteran striker came off the bench to help his side to a comeback draw at Club Tijuana

Jozy Altidore appears to be settling into life in Mexico nicely.

The veteran forward scored his first goal for Puebla on just his second appearance, coming off the bench to help his new team to a 3-3 comeback draw against Club Tijuana on Friday night.

Altidore entered the match in the 73rd minute with his team down 3-1. With five minutes to go in regulation the forward got on the end of a long pass and expertly held off his defender before finishing low to halve his team’s deficit.

That goal would prove to be important, as Israel Reyes scored deep into stoppage time to give Puebla a dramatic late draw.

Altidore joined Puebla on loan from the New England Revolution last month after he scored just one goal in 17 games with the Revs.

The 32-year-old has not featured for the U.S. national team since 2019 but a strong run in Mexico could give Gregg Berhalter something to think about ahead of the World Cup.

Jozy Altidore on verge of loan move to Liga MX’s Puebla

Jozy’s off to Liga MX, seemingly in pursuit of more starts

Jozy Altidore is on the brink of leaving the New England Revolution, with multiple outlets reporting that a loan to Puebla in Liga MX is virtually done.

Fabrizio Romano first reported the news, noting that the loan would run through December 31, 2022. Altidore is expected to arrive in Puebla in the very near future, and per ESPN could even be available for Saturday’s game against San Luis.

Speaking to 98.5 The Sports Hub and to The Bent Musket on Thursday, head coach Bruce Arena confirmed the reports, saying that Altidore had initiated the loan himself.

Altidore joined New England this winter, but has largely been restricted to short substitute appearances. While he’s played in 17 league matches for the Revolution, Altidore only has four starts and 589 league minutes in a New England kit.

Even Adam Buksa’s move to Lens hasn’t opened up many opportunities, as the Revolution have since signed striker Giacomo Vrioni as a Designated Player. Arena has also been willing to play Gustavo Bou up top alone.

Altidore’s motivations aren’t known, but with the U.S. men’s national team striker pool still seemingly in flux, a rich vein of form in Mexico could theoretically vault Altidore back into the mix for Gregg Berhalter’s side at the World Cup.

USMNT striker stock watch: Dike’s back, Ebobisse’s heating up

Who will start at No. 9 for the USMNT at the World Cup? Right now, Jesús Ferreira leads the striker stock watch power rankings.
