Tigers ranked among best teams against non-conference opponents

Auburn currently holds the nation’s eighth-highest winning percentage against nonconference teams since 2018.

The Auburn Tigers have the eighth-best record against non-conference opponents over the past five years. They have a 57-12 record or an 82.6 winning percentage against non-SEC teams during that time.

The Houston Cougars are in first at 64-10, the Gonzaga Bulldogs are 72-12, the Duke Blue Devils are 50-9, the Baylor Bears are 60-11, the St. John’s Red Storm are 47-9, the Kansas Jayhawks are 61-12 and the Arizona Wildcats are 48-10.

Auburn has played some challenging opponents during this run. The 2019 trip to the final four included wins over the Kansas Jayhawks, North Carolina Tar Heels, and Kentucky Wildcats.

The 2018-19 season also included a close 78-72 loss to a Duke team led by Zion Williamson. The 2021-22 season featured a 62-53 win over the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers and an 89-68 win over the Syracuse Orange in the Bahamas.

[autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] takes out-of-conference play seriously and that approach has paid dividends for Auburn as they have entered a new era as a program.

College Football News makes postseason prediction for 2023 Georgia Bulldogs

CFN released its postseason predictions for the 2023 season

The Georgia Bulldogs are currently the kings of college football. After winning back-to-back national titles, UGA is looking to go for the three-peat in 2023.

Pete Fiutak of College Football News seems to think Georgia has a pretty solid shot of at least putting itself in position to win it all. Fiutak recently released his bowl projections for next season and has Georgia going to the championship game, though he did not provide a prediction for the title game.

Fiutak’s four College Football Playoff teams include Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State and Texas.

He has Georgia playing Texas in the Sugar Bowl from New Orleans. In the other semifinal game, the Rose Bowl, Fiutak projects an Alabama vs. Ohio State matchup.

He predicts Georgia and Ohio State to win their playoff games and meet in the national championship, in what would be a rematch of last season’s epic Peach Bowl. Georgia beat Ohio State 42-41 in the semifinal last season to advance to the national title, where it beat TCU 65-7.

According to Vegas, no school has better odds to win it all than UGA does. Georgia’s odds are currently listed at +225, per BetMGM. Alabama has the second best odds (+500).

Georgia opens its season on Sept. 2, and has arguably the easiest schedule in the entire conference next season.

Quick reaction and impact of the Lions’ gambling-related suspensions

Breaking down the impact of the Lions’ gambling-related suspensions and roster moves

The Detroit Lions got hit with some major adversity on Friday. The NFL suspended four Lions players for various lengths of time for violating league rules on gambling.

Most notable among the suspensions is the six-game sentence meted out to wide receiver Jameson Williams. Safety C.J. Moore and WRs Stanley Berryhill and Quintez Cephus were also suspended. Berryhill received six games, while Cephus and Moore were suspended indefinitely with a minimum of one year.

The Lions released Cephus and Moore immediately.

It’s a tough blow to the Lions and the considerable positive vibes around the team. Here are a few thoughts on how it impacts the Lions and the players involved.

CBS Sports: One Michigan football player goes in first round in a seven-round mock

Excited to see where they all really go! #GoBlue

We are under a week away from the 2023 NFL Draft. There should be plenty of Wolverines getting the call next weekend, but there are only a couple of players that are being projected as possible first-round selections.

CBS Sports came out with a full seven-round mock draft and several Michigan players were listed. But there was one huge omission.

Josh Edwards believes one Michigan football player will make their way into the first round. Edwards has the New Orleans Saints selecting Mazi Smith with the 29th overall pick in the draft.

New Orleans signed a few interior defenders in free agency to replace Shy Tuttle and David Onyemata. Mazi Smith is a wide body who will upgrade the run defense.

For the rest of the draft, Edwards didn’t mention why he was mocking players to the teams, but he had one Wolverine going in round two. DJ Turner went 56th to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

After losing Dalton Schultz in free agency, the Dallas Cowboys may be in need of a tight end to fill the void. Which is why Edwards had Luke Schoonmaker going to the ‘Boys with the 90th pick of the draft.

Dropping into the fifth round, Mike Morris gets selected by the Indianapolis Colts with the 162nd pick. Edwards has the Colts taking the athletic edge defender to pair with Kwity Paye.

Morris wasn’t the only Wolverine to see his name called in round five. Kick Jake Moody went 173rd to the San Fransico 49ers.

In round six, Ryan Hayes heard his name called by the Detroit Lions. In this scenario, Hayes stays in state and would look to make a name for himself in another blue uniform.

In round seven, Edwards has Ronnie Bell going. But he has him going as the last pick in the entire draft to the Houston Texans with pick No. 259.

Somehow Olu Oluwatimi’s name was left off of Edwards’ mock draft. It’s hard to imagine Oluwatimi doesn’t get selected, in fact, he could hear his name called as early as the third round.

Roundup:

First round: Mazi Smith – New Orleans Saints (pick No. 29)

Second round: DJ Turner – Jacksonville Jaguars (pick No. 56)

Third round: Luke Schoonmaker – Dallas Cowboys (pick No. 90)

Fifth round: Mike Morris – Indianapolis Colts (pick No. 162)

Fifth round: Jake Moody – San Fransico 49ers (pick No. 173)

Sixth round: Ryan Hayes – Detroit Lions (pick No. 194)

Seventh round: Ronnie Bell – Houston Texans (pick No. 259)

ESPN FPI: Ranking Auburn’s 2023 opponents from easiest to hardest

As usual, Auburn has a challenging schedule ahead of them.

The early Football Power Index rankings from ESPN have just been released, and one thing is for certain… the Auburn Tigers will face a challenging schedule.

That fact is nothing new, as the Tigers compete in arguably the toughest division in college football, the SEC West. Not only that, but Auburn has the luxury of playing the two-time defending College Football Playoff national champion, Georgia, every season.

According to FPI data, Auburn is projected to go 5-7 in Hugh Freeze’s first season. But, of course, the projection could change drastically, as the initial rankings were released during the spring transfer portal window.

How realistic is a 5-7 record for Auburn in 2023? The schedule certainly has its difficulties, but most of Auburn’s hardest games will be at home. The Tigers will face five teams in the FPI top 25. Out of those games, Auburn will face three (Alabama, Georgia, and Ole Miss) at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

This early on, it is hard to accurately predict what the story of the 2023 Auburn Tigers will be. However, we can make assumptions about how challenging each game will be.

Here’s a look at Auburn’s opponents for the 2023 slate, organized by ESPN FPI ranking.

2 Cowboys opponents hit with player suspensions in 2023 for gambling

From @ToddBrock24f7: Washington had one player suspended indefinitely; Detroit got two indefinite suspensions and six-game bans for two other players.

Two of the Cowboys’ 2023 opponents will see their rosters depleted after the NFL levied suspensions against a total of five players for violating the league’s gambling policy.

Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney has been suspended indefinitely, according to Friday news reports. Toney, who was entering his third season out of Penn State, can apply for reinstatement after one year.

Detroit wide receiver Quintez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore were also suspended indefinitely; they were both released by the team upon the annoucement. Additionally, Lions wide receivers Jameson Williams- the 12th overall pick in last year’s draft- and Stanley Berryhill have been suspended for the first six games of the regular season.

The three players who were suspended indefinitely were found to have placed bets on NFL games; the two players with shorter suspensions conducted mobile betting- but not on NFL games- while at Lions headquarters.

Wagering on NFL games, the draft, or any league-related activity is strictly off-limits to all NFL players and personnel, per league policy. Placing bets while at a team facility or on team-related travel is also banned.

Several Lions staffers in various departments were previously dismissed in March for violating the gambling policy.

The NFL had been conducting an investigation into this most recent batch of players, and both teams had been previously notified that their players would receive suspensions.

The Cowboys will face the Lions and the Commanders (twice) as opponents in the 2023 regular season, though it is not yet known when.

GM Andrew Berry gives hint on the fifth-year option of Jedrick Wills

The Browns are pleased with their left tackle.

After adding talent to their roster during the free agency period, it sure sounds like the Cleveland Browns will be picking up the fifth-year option of left tackle Jedrick Wills as well. While general manager Andrew Berry did not explicitly state this would be a fact, he gave a strong hint trending in that direction at his press conference today. When asked about the status of his starting left tackle and his option, Berry had this to say:

“You guys will certainly know before May 2. We’re pleased with Jed.”

May 2 is the deadline by which teams have to decide whether or not to pick up the fifth-year of first round picks. The Browns under Berry, however, have historically had that decision made before the NFL draft. Look for news on Wills’ option to come out in the coming days.

Former Browns S Jovante Moffatt claimed off of waivers by the Cardinals

The former Browns safety has found a new home.

After his release from the Atlanta Falcons, safety Jovante Moffatt has landed with the Arizona Cardinals as he was claimed off of the waiver wire. Moffatt, of course, is familiar to those in Northeast Ohio given his time with the Cleveland Browns. The 26-year-old signed with the Browns as an undrafted free agent out of Middle Tennessee State after the conclusion of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Spending two years with the team, Moffatt appeared in 14 games, totaling 10 tackles as a contributor on special teams. He now gets a fresh start in the desert after spending one season in Atlanta with the Falcons.
