Colorado picks up former Florida State defender Brendan Gant

Colorado added another Florida State transfer to its defense

Another day brought another flurry of moves for the Colorado Buffaloes football program. The Buffs added former Florida State defensive end Derrick McLendon and linebacker/safety Brendan Gant, per Matt Zenitz of On3.

Both McLendon and Gant attended the Buffs’ spring game. Now both are coming to play for defensive coordinator Charles Kelly.

Gant is a welcome addition for the Buffs. He had 112 total tackles during his time with Florida State, including 33 last season. The Buffs’ defense continues to add pieces despite losing numerous players to the transfer portal.

Gant also announced his decision with a hype video on Twitter:

Gant was recruited as a safety, but he was a linebacker at Florida State last year. It will be interesting to see how he fits with the Buffs this season.

The Buffs also gained a commitment from Old Dominion transfer defensive lineman Chazz Wallace on Wednesday.

Houston OL transfers Cam’Ron Johnson, Trevonte Sylvester set to visit Colorado, per On3

A pair of Houston OL transfers are slated to visit the #cubuffs this weekend

Over the past few days, a deluge of Colorado Buffaloes has entered the transfer portal.

A total of nine offensive linemen have left this offseason, leaving quite the hole for Deion Sanders to fill in the portal. Six OL have transferred in and on Wednesday, On3’s Matt Zenitz reported that Houston offensive linemen Cam’Ron Johnson and Trevonte Sylvester are slated to visit Colorado this weekend.

Johnson received a transfer grade of 89 (per 247Sports), just outside of the four-star range. Additionally, Johnson received first-team All-AAC accolades in 2022 and would provide a boost to Colorado’s offensive line. Along with Colorado, Johnson is also interested in USC and Missouri and has visited both schools.

USC received a commitment from Wyoming offensive guard transfer Emmanuel Pregnon on Wednesday, likely leaving Johnson down to the Tigers and Buffaloes as options.

As for Sylvester, he appeared in 12 games for Houston as a redshirt freshman in 2022 as a backup left tackle.

Top ten college football programs ranked by all-time NFL draft picks. Where is Ohio State?

A look at the top 10 college football programs when it comes to NFL draft picks of all time. #NFLdraft

It sure seems like this NFL draft news cycle has been circulating longer than any in recent memory, but that’s probably just me aging and becoming grumpy. Part of the news is centered around C.J. Stroud and other Ohio State players that could hear their names called beginning on Thursday night, and we’ve been following right along with you.

But when it comes to the draft, the Buckeye program is one of the best at churning out NFL widgets. OSU has produced the most first-round NFL draft picks of all time and is among the top five in all-time draft picks in totality.

And the Buckeyes aren’t the only program that has fared well in sending players to the league. Big Ten programs like Michigan, Penn State, and Nebraska have also done very well. And of course, the SEC teams have been crankin’ too.

Here is a ranking of the top ten college football programs based on all-time NFL draft picks.

Here’s what Sean McVay is looking for in a young backup QB

If the Rams draft a quarterback to back up Matthew Stafford, expect them to target one with these traits

As the Los Angeles Rams head into the draft this week, they have just one quarterback on the roster: Matthew Stafford. John Wolford and Bryce Perkins are both free agents still, so it’s possible the Rams will bring back one of the two, but it sure seems like they’ll be looking for a new backup behind No. 9.

Trading for a veteran or signing one in free agency is another way to add a backup before the season begins, but Les Snead said on Tuesday that the Rams are looking at the second tier of passers in the draft.

“Because of the situation of the void, we’ve definitely been intentional about, if you want to call it the second tier and those players that would probably be beyond the four, even a fifth one now in Tennessee (QB Hendon Hooker) is talked about a lot going early, going before us,” Snead said.

Sean McVay will have a big say in which quarterback the Rams draft, if they select one at all. As the head coach, he’s the one who will help groom the rookie into not only a backup, but a potential starter in the future.

McVay was asked what he looks for in a young backup quarterback and he shared a little bit about traits he seeks when evaluating passers.

“You’re always talking about decision making, the ability to be able to play on time with accuracy,” McVay said. “What does it look like in crunch time? What are those innate traits that you have in terms of how your personality can authentically come across? But you naturally bring people with you because you’re thrust into an innate leadership role as a quarterback just based on the nature of the position. So those things are important, but there’s so many different parts of that evaluation. You’re looking for a lot of those types of things, and I think that can be illustrated and expressed in a variety of ways based on what those guys elite traits are do we have a vision for him. The quarterback is where everything always starts, and there’s certain guys that are easier evals just because they might be doing certain things that you would ask, but that doesn’t mean that they’ll end up being a better player. So I think you have to be able to look at the total group and their total body of work, and then figure out how do they elevate others around them and what are those elite traits and do we feel like it translates to our level and what we would ask, and then ultimately we would adjust to them as well.”

The Rams met with both Purdue’s Aidan O’Connell and Houston’s Clayton Tune, so those are two mid-to-late-round options for the Rams in the draft. Dorian Thompson-Robinson is another possible target on Day 3, having played in the Rams’ backyard at UCLA.

Thompson-Robinson is one of the best athletes at quarterback in this class and though he’s undersized, he’s accurate and plays well when he’s able to throw in a rhythm and on time. He would be a good prospect to bring in and try to develop, even if his play style differs dramatically from Stafford’s.

Sean McVay on Cam Akers: ‘Looking forward to watching him shine’ in 2023

Sean McVay is excited to see Cam Akers perform from start to finish in 2023 after getting off to a slow start last year

In the middle of last season, it looked like the Los Angeles Rams would be searching for a new starting running back in 2023. Darrell Henderson Jr. was set to be a free agent in the offseason and Cam Akers was away from the team after a dispute with the organization. For a while, it looked like the Rams might either cut or trade Akers.

Ultimately, he returned to the team and wound up finishing the year strong, rushing for 512 yards in the final six games alone after tallying just 274 yards on the ground in the first 12 weeks of the season.

That end-of-season performance has Matthew Stafford excited, and Sean McVay also thinks it’s a strong base for Akers to build on in 2023 as he looks to cement his place as RB1.

“I think it’s big. I think for him, anytime that you’re able to have a level of success, and I think being able to go through what he did shows a lot about the human being,” McVay said this week. “He was able to have over 500 (yards) in the last (six) games and really be able to be a bright spot for us, and let’s continue to build on that. Excited about (RBs coach) Ron Gould and what he’ll be able to do with that room, but I know Cam’s had a great look in his eye. Expect him to continue to build on the way that he finished. Confidence is a powerful thing that can compound in the right ways, and he certainly has taken the steps to be able to do that and that’s a big deal. I’m really looking forward to watching him shine from start to finish this year.”

The Rams haven’t had a consistent and dynamic running game since Todd Gurley was in the backfield, but that’s a staple of McVay’s offense – even if it seems like it’s all pass, no run. He likes to have a workhorse back to lean on and the hope is Akers can be that in 2023.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Rams still go on to draft a running back at some point on Day 2 or 3, but Akers should head into the summer atop the depth chart, ahead of Kyren Williams and whoever else they add.

Getting the running game going should be a major priority for Los Angeles, especially with the way the defense is looking on paper. Maintaining possession and moving the chains is a good way to keep the ball out of the opponents’ hands.

Bruce Pearl shares update regarding Allen Flanigan’s future with the program

Auburn has seen plenty of roster movement this offseason. What is the next more for Flanigan?

There has been plenty of movement within Auburn’s roster since the 2022-23 season concluded in March. However, the most interesting of all cases is that of senior guard [autotag]Allen Flanigan[/autotag].

Flanigan’s future at Auburn has been the center of much speculation since the departure of his father, [autotag]Wes Flanigan[/autotag], to Ole Miss. Will Flanigan transfer? Will he hang around? In an effort to provide clarity, head coach [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] shed light on the situation Tuesday.

At the “AMBUSH” event that was held in Atlanta on Tuesday, Pearl says that Flanigan will make a decision regarding his future once he graduates this summer. Most of that stems from his past entries into the NBA draft.

“In Al’s case, he’s already declared twice,” Pearl said Tuesday. “You can’t declare a third time. If you do, you have to stay in the draft, so there’s no reason for him to declare anything.”

Flanigan tested the NBA draft waters in 2021 and 2022, which means that he would forfeit his remaining season of college eligibility if he declared a third time. So, if Flanigan wants to continue his collegiate career, he would either need to enter the transfer portal or return to Auburn for his final season.

Auburn has already seen the loss of four players to the transfer portal and has the possibility to lose four others in [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag], [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag], [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag], and [autotag]Dylan Cardwell[/autotag] to the NBA.

Pearl has also added freshman [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag], and transfers [autotag]Denver Jones[/autotag] and [autotag]Cheney Johnson[/autotag]. Pearl also says that he hopes to take one or two more players from the transfer portal.

Colorado favored to land former AAC Rookie of the Year RB from Houston

Colorado is favored to land former AAC Rookie of the Year RB Alton McCaskill

Now that several scholarship spots are available for head coach Deion Sanders to work with, it’s time for Colorado to start adding from the transfer portal once again.

The first addition after the spring game could be Alton McCaskill, a four-star transfer running back out of Houston who was named the AAC Rookie of the Year in 2021. McCaskill rushed for 961 yards and 16 touchdowns in that impressive freshman season but was sidelined last fall after suffering an ACL tear in the spring.

Not long after he entered the transfer portal on Wednesday, 247Sports gave him a crystal ball prediction to land at Colorado.

Alton McCaskill’s transfer profile:

More calls for Mayer to be Cowboys’ pick at 26

From @ToddBrock24f7: The Notre Dame star could be the Cowboys’ tight end of the future, and a handful of late mock drafts predict that’s how things will fall.

The drumbeat is getting louder for the Cowboys to address an obvious thin spot on their roster with a prospect who is at the top of his class now… and could be at the top of his position’s class in the pros before much longer.

On Draft Day Eve, more outlets are mocking Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer to Dallas with the 26th overall pick… and they present a convincing case for why the Joneses should make it happen in real life on Thursday night.

The ESPN Analytics Draft Day Predictor pegs Mayer’s chances of still being on the board in the 26th spot at about 60%. The site also has Mayer as the most likely pick for Dallas, with a chance he’ll be the selection at greater than 11%. Jacksonville looks to be the main competition for the Cowboys to land him; the predictor says there’s a 10% chance the Jaguars will turn in Mayer’s card with the 24th pick.

Utah’s Dalton Kincaid is considered by many outlets to have more potential upside than Mayer, but The 33rd Team’s Mike Tannenbaum likes the Golden Domer’s blocking skills better. He has Mayer as the pick for Dallas at 26 in that site’s latest mock draft, echoing most analysts who say the not-yet-22-year-old will step in and be a Day One starter.

Blocking is a key component when talking about any tight end, especially for a Mike McCarthy-helmed club. The head coach spoke just this week about the multiple roles his offense will ask tight ends to fill, and in a scheme that leaned heavily on two-TE sets last year and promises to “run the damn ball” this year, McCarthy made it clear that his tight ends will be doing plenty of the heavy lifting.

Dalton Schultz, the Cowboys starter in 2022, “eventually became a willing, passable blocker,” notes Jake Kemp of D Magazine. But Mayer, he says, “blocks to take the defender’s will away from him” and calls him “a cheat code” once you factor in his abilities as a receiver.

Mayer can certainly do that, too. He “has a little Jason Witten to his game,” Danny Kelly points out in The Ringer‘s mock draft. Considering Big Witt is the franchise’s all-time leader in both catches and receiving yards, even “a little” Jason Witten would go a long way in replacing- and surpassing- Schultz’s production in that department. Kelly mocks Mayer to Dallas at 26, too, forecasting: “He should quickly emerge as one of Dak Prescott’s favorite underneath targets.”

That’s no knock on second-year tight ends Jake Ferguson and Peyton Hendershot. Both played well enough as rookies in 2022 that it was obvious Schultz would be allowed to leave in free agency. But Ferguson was a fourth-round draft pick; Hendershot went undrafted. Either could eventually grow into what Schultz was; Mayer might well turn into another Rob Gronkowski or George Kittle.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

For the Fighting Irish last season, Mayer put up monster numbers in an offense where he was the primary weapon, one that opposing defenses keyed on and still couldn’t stop. What’s more, Kemp notes that Mayer finished in the top ten nationwide in both forced missed tackles and contested catches.

Mayer is a clear-cut first-round talent, but the Cowboys haven’t used an opening-round pick on a tight end since David LaFleur in 1997, The Athletic‘s Jon Machota reminds us. And the Packers never did that during McCarthy’s 13-year tenure in Green Bay. But Machota also sends Mayer to Dallas at 26 in their latest beat writers’ mock, heeding McCarthy’s own apparent openness to the idea at the team’s pre-draft press conference.

“As many 6-4, 250 pound men that can play on four downs: I don’t think you can have enough of that body type on your team,” McCarthy said Monday. “There’s more versatility there.”

Mayer would no doubt give the Cowboys offense tons of versatility, and for many years to come. But whether the Cowboys grab their don’t-think-about-it-again tight end of the future or decide to march to the beat of their own drum come draft night remains to be seen.

Maddie Penta makes impressive climb in D1Softball’s pitcher power rankings

Auburn’s ace continues to perform at a high level this season.

It is rare for a pitcher to lead her team to victory at Rhoads Stadium in Tuscaloosa. To do it twice? It is virtually impossible.

Auburn right-hander [autotag]Maddie Penta[/autotag] was given that task last weekend, and she succeeded as she played a huge role in No. 17 Auburn‘s series win at No. 16 Alabama last weekend.

Because of this, her stock has risen in D1Softball’s pitcher power rankings. She begins the week at the No. 3 slot in the power rankings, which is a seven-spot increase from last week’s rankings.

After the Tigers dropped game one of the series to Alabama on Saturday, Penta was called upon to shut the Crimson Tide down in game two of the doubleheader. She did just that by allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out seven batters in Auburn’s 5-1 win.

Penta got the call again on Sunday in the series finale and won a duel with Alabama ace Montana Fouts by striking out eight Crimson Tide batters while allowing six hits and an earned run in the Tigers’ 3-1 win over Alabama.

Following the Alabama series, Penta holds a 21-5 record with an ERA of 1.68. She currently has 205 strikeouts to her name, which is 27 strikeouts shy of her career-high total, which she obtained during the 2021 season.
