Chiefs re-sign LB Drue Tranquill to 3-year $19m contract

The #Chiefs re-signed linebacker Drue Tranquill on Thursday night before free agency opens on March 11.

The Kansas City Chiefs re-signed linebacker Drue Tranquill to a three-year $19 million contract on Thursday, March 7.

Tranquill joined Kansas City on a one-year deal last season and was a key contributor in the Chiefs’ run to Super Bowl LVIII.

This contract will keep Tranquill in Western Missouri through the rest of his 30s and ensures that Kansas City will maintain continuity at the linebacker position while other areas of the Chiefs’ roster remain in limbo.

With Tranquill locked up for the next three years, general manager Brett Veach can now begin work on extending star defensive tackle Chris Jones who is set to hit the open market in free agency if he doesn’t re-sign with Kansas City before March 11.

While it wasn’t expected that Tranquill would be the first domino to fall for the Chiefs ahead of the legal tampering period next week, it could prove consequential for Kansas City’s defense that the team managed to retain him for the foreseeable future.

Breaking down Garrett Bradbury’s new contract with the Vikings

Bradbury’s newest contract is a team-friendly deal that will keep the talented center with the #Vikings for the next three seasons

The Minnesota Vikings managed to keep center Garrett Bradbury in the North Star State for the foreseeable future with a three-year contract that was agreed to on Tuesday. The details of his deal broke on Wednesday morning, and are a good indication that the team has faith in his ability to be a consistent contributor for the team up front.

Bradbury will see $3.82 million in a signing bonus on this updated contract, which will help lower his salary cap number for the 2023 season. The contract is only guaranteed for next season in the event that he should be injured as a member of the Vikings this season but his 2024 salary will become fully guaranteed on the third day of the new league year next season.

His total salary will increase from $1.08 million to $4.90 million in 2024 and 2025, which could present Minnesota with an issue should his performance next season falter.

All in all, this contract should be considered a team-friendly deal for the Vikings, who couldn’t afford to lose a key piece of their offensive line as they look to pursue a Super Bowl berth in 2023. Bradbury is still just 27 years old but is set to turn 28 ahead of the new season, so this contract should lock him up for a solid chunk of his prime.

Packers re-signing CB Rasul Douglas

The Packers are bringing back breakout cornerback Rasul Douglas on a new deal.

The Green Bay Packers are bringing back breakout cornerback Rasul Douglas with a three-year deal.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the deal is worth up to $25.5 million.

Douglas, who turns 27 in August, intercepted a team-high five passes over 12 games and nine starts with the Packers last season.

Trading Davante Adams freed up the cap space necessary to get a deal done with Douglas, who will now team with Jaire Alexander and Eric Stokes to give the Packers an impressive trio of cornerbacks entering the 2022 season.

Douglas’ first season in Green Bay was nothing short of a revelation. Signed off the Cardinals’ practice squad in October, Douglas quickly entered the starting lineup and became an impact contributor. In fact, his turnovers directly helped the Packers win three different games. He produced a game-sealing interception of Kyler Murray in the end zone against the Cardinals, pick-sixes of Justin Fields and Matthew Stafford and a pair of interceptions of Baker Mayfield on Christmas Day.

Grading RB Chris Carson re-signing with the Seahawks: B

The Seattle Seahawks have earned themselves a B grade for re-signing starting running back Chris Carson.

On Friday, the Seahawks re-committed to their philosophy of balanced offense by re-signing running back Chris Carson to what was originally reported as a three-year, $24.625 million deal with voidable years.

The mechanics of the deal are a bit more team-friendly.

Since he was drafted in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL draft out of Oklahoma State, Carson has been almost a cult hero among both Seahawks Twitter — which is something of a legend in its own right — and fantasy football Twitter. Of course, back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons might also have something to do with that, which Carson posted in both 2018 and 2019. Back during that 2019 campaign, Carson ran for 1,230 yards on 278 carries, and also caught 37 passes for 266 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

There are some concerns with Carson going forward. First there is the injury history. Carson’s 2019 season was cut short with a hip fracture, and he also missed time this past year with a sprained foot. Then there are the fumble woes. This dates back to his time with Oklahoma State, where he was benched for losing the ball, and continues into his NFL days. Back in 2019 Carson fumbled seven times — including four lost fumbles — and was also inconsistent at the mesh point with quarterback Russell Wilson, which led to some fumbles that were charged to the quarterback.

Those two factors were going to play in any negotiation this offseason. But the opportunity to re-add a running back with a pair of 1,000-yard seasons is going to intrigue most front offices, and no front office more than Seattle’s.

Former Wisconsin linebacker is back with Tampa Bay heading into the NFL Playoffs

Former Wisconsin Badger linebacker Jack Cichy was re-signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers yesterday as they prepare for NFL Week 17 and the

Former Wisconsin linebacker Jack Cichy has struggled to stay healthy during the first couple years of his NFL career, combining to play in only 15 games since he was drafted in 2018.

He hasn’t moved around much, though, as until this year the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had held him on their injured reserve and waited for him to get healthy and be able to contribute.

The first time we saw the former Badger linebacker a subject of an NFL transfer release was back on December 3, 2020 when the New England Patriots claimed him off waivers and placed him on the practice squad.

Yesterday, Cichy was the subject yet again when the Buccaneers brought him back from the Patriots’ practice squad and added him to their active roster.

The former Badger is healthy and will now get a shot at aiding the Bucs in their first playoff run since 2007.

Pete Carroll, Seahawks hoping to re-sign running back Chris Carson

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carrol is hoping to re-sign running back Chris Carson before his rookie contract expires after this season.

The Seattle Seahawks will have a number of decisions to make after the season is over regarding players who are set to become free agents at the start of the new league year in spring.

One of those players whose rookie contract is set to expire is running back Chris Carson.

Coach Pete Carroll was asked about potential negotiations on Wednesday before practice.

“Chris is really one of us, and he’s fit into the program great,” Carroll told reporters. “Chris has good to look out for himself, so he’s got to see what the situation is, but we would love for him to be with us. He’s been a terrific part of our team, and hopefully we can keep that going.”

Carson has suffered injuries over the last few seasons, which can be devastating, especially in a contract year. Carroll and the Seahawks likely know what they can expect from Carson in the future, but the price must be right for a long-term deal.

“In my mind, I can’t imagine anything else happening,” Carroll continued. “But from the business side of it, he’s got a chance to see what’s going on, and so hopefully we’ll be able to figure it out and keep him.”

UPDATE: Former Wisconsin LB Chirs Orr re-signs with the Panthers’ practice squad

Former Wisconsin football linebacker Chris Orr re-signs with the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad after they cut him two days ago.

After former Wisconsin Badger linebacker Chris Orr was cut by the Carolina Panthers yesterday he didn’t take long to return to the field in some capacity as he re-signed with the team’s practice squad.

The former Badger linebacker will now continue his push to break into the league and find a permanent home.

Lions re-sign RB Dalyn Dawkins to practice squad, release DT Kevin Strong

The Detroit Lions announced that they have re-signed running back Dalyn Dawkins to the practice squad and released defensive lineman Kevin Strong in a corresponding move.

The Detroit Lions announced that they have re-signed running back Dalyn Dawkins to the practice squad and released defensive lineman Kevin Strong in a corresponding move.

This Dawkins third stint with the Lions in less than a month as the Lions churn their practice squad on a weekly basis. With gadget running back Kerrith Whyte still on injured reserve, the Lions have leaned on Dawkins to fill a role they value on the practice squad.

Strong signed with the Lions after the 2019 draft and managed to earn a spot on the 53-man roster out of camp. He was a weekly contributor until he was placed on injured reserve midseason.

This year in training camp, Strong still maintained his defensive tackle depth role, but due to roster construction, he landed on the practice squad instead of the active roster. When Nick Williams was injured in Week 2, it was Strong who the Lions called up to replace on the active roster — and he topped Pro Football Focus’ grades that week for the Lions.

Yesterday, the Lions elected to protect four players on the practice squad, one of them being Frank Herron. And now after today’s move, it’s clear he had passed Strong on the depth chart. Curiously, the Lions also opted to retain defensive tackle Albert Huggins, whom they have added and released from the practice squad several times this season.

On a positive note, because the Lions have a habit of bringing practice squad players back to the roster, so we may not have seen the last of Strong in Detroit.

Seahawks re-sign Nick Bellore, place Phil Haynes on injured reserve

The Seattle Seahawks made a couple of roster moves on Monday, re-signing fullback Nick Bellore and placing Phil Haynes on injured reserve.

The Seattle Seahawks executed a couple of roster moves on Monday, re-signing fullback Nick Bellore to the active roster and placing guard Phil Haynes on the injured reserve.

Bellore was a casualty of Saturday’s initial roster cuts and left Seattle without a fullback. This will mark his ninth season in the NFL and his second with the Seahawks. Bellore played in 14 games in 2019 as was a special-teams standout.

Haynes, who is entering his second season in Seattle, began his rookie campaign on the Physically Unable to Perform list before he was activated later in the year in time to appear in the Seahawks’ playoff loss to the Packers. The Seahawks did not specify the nature of Hayne’s injury to start this season in the press release.

The Seahawks practice Monday afternoon before breaking for a rest day on Tuesday.

Are Seahawks still in the running to sign free agent Jadeveon Clowney?

The Seattle Seahawks may very well still be in the running to sign free agent, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney before the start of the season.

Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has managed to missed yet another offseason and training camp, but is he any closer to signing with an NFL team? With the regular season start just one week away, it seems Clowney might be narrowing his choices.

All indications suggest the Titans and Saints are the teams still showing the most interest.

“We have an offer out,” Titans coach Mike Vrabel said Friday. “We’ve been in contact with Jadeveon . . . and his agent. That’s all I can report. And that’s all I really know.”

While the Titans might have an offer on the table and the Saints are in the hunt as well, that certainly doesn’t rule out Clowney returning to Seattle.

“Always competing,” coach Pete Carroll said Thursday when asked if the Seahawks had been in contact with Clowney’s camp. “Always competing.”

Remember it was just last summer at this time when Seattle pulled off the trade with the Texans to send Clowney to the Seahawks.
