Chiefs re-sign LB Drue Tranquill to 3-year $19m contract

The #Chiefs re-signed linebacker Drue Tranquill on Thursday night before free agency opens on March 11.

The Kansas City Chiefs re-signed linebacker Drue Tranquill to a three-year $19 million contract on Thursday, March 7.

Tranquill joined Kansas City on a one-year deal last season and was a key contributor in the Chiefs’ run to Super Bowl LVIII.

This contract will keep Tranquill in Western Missouri through the rest of his 30s and ensures that Kansas City will maintain continuity at the linebacker position while other areas of the Chiefs’ roster remain in limbo.

With Tranquill locked up for the next three years, general manager Brett Veach can now begin work on extending star defensive tackle Chris Jones who is set to hit the open market in free agency if he doesn’t re-sign with Kansas City before March 11.

While it wasn’t expected that Tranquill would be the first domino to fall for the Chiefs ahead of the legal tampering period next week, it could prove consequential for Kansas City’s defense that the team managed to retain him for the foreseeable future.

Contract talks around the NFL could spur Saints, Isaiah Foskey to action

Contract talks around the NFL could spur the Saints and Isaiah Foskey to action. More and more second-round draft picks are putting pens to paper:

Just one New Orleans Saints draft pick hasn’t signed their rookie contract — second-round defensive end Isaiah Foskey, selected at No. 40 overall out of Notre Dame in the 2023 draft. So what’s the holdup?

There aren’t many factors to negotiate under modern collective bargaining agreements, but one thing players and teams can haggle over is contract guarantees. Because contract values are already established, players and agents have to work hard to look for wins. How those are structured and paid out is linked to draft slots, and Foskey sits right in the middle of an important fulcrum. We saw the same thing happen with Alontae Taylor last summer.

The first two years of second-round contracts are typically guaranteed, but that tapers off in the third year of those deals, and the fourth year isn’t guaranteed at all. Based off current trends, NFL contract expert Daniel Salib projects Foskey to get a fully-guaranteed third-year salary as the No. 40 pick, which is what he should be negotiating for with the Saints. But what context informs that prediction?

Derrick Hall, the Seattle Seahawks’ pick at No. 37, signed his rookie contract and received a fully-guaranteed third year salary as well as an unprecedented $100,000 in guarantees for the fourth year; that lines up with what the No. 35 pick got last year, meaning Foskey could push for a little lower than that. The Atlanta Falcons signed Matthew Bergeron, their No. 38 pick, just hours after Hall put pen to paper in Seattle. His guarantees structure is unclear just yet, but it’s reasonable to think it follows the trend Hall established.

And Foskey could be next. The No. 39 pick is Carolina Panthers wide receiver Jonathan Mingo, who has yet to sign his contract. It shouldn’t take long for these details to get ironed out, and then conversations shift to what really matters: the product on the field. How soon these rookies earn snaps and start to develop into pros is what will be on everyone’s minds, not how much money they’re making.

Former Ravens OT Orlando Brown Jr. shares thoughts on QB Lamar Jackson

Former Ravens tackle Orlando Brown Jr. gave his opinion on Lamar Jackson

While the Baltimore Ravens have been quiet so far in free agency the team has been one of the most talked about franchises of the offseason, and for good reason. The circumstances surrounding their negotiations with quarterback Lamar Jackson remain mired in mystery, and as time passes, it seems that an extension for the MVP signal caller will continue to be a hot topic for the foreseeable future.

Former Ravens offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr. made his feelings on the matter known in an ESPN interview on Thursday. He told the crew on “Get Up” that he believes Jackson deserves a fully guaranteed contract, saying that his status, his ability his leadership and his qualities off of the field make him qualified for fully-guaranteed money.

“His status, his ability, the things that he’s shown as a leader, his qualities off the field, I don’t know if there’s anybody more deserving right now,” Brown said. “I personally believe he definitely deserves a fully-guaranteed deal.”

Brown just signed a contract with the Cincinnati Bengals that provided generous guarantees and seems to think that Jackson deserves every bit as much, if not more than he got. Negotiations with Jackson are ongoing, and with no end in sight, Ravens fans will have to wait to see just how much money Baltimore will be willing to shell out to keep their franchise quarterback under center for years to come.
