Alabama’s James Burnip named the Ray Guy Punter of the Week

Alabama’s James Burnip named the Ray Guy Punter of the Week for his efforts against Texas

There weren’t a ton of bright spots for Alabama in their 10-point home loss to Texas on Saturday. The offense and defense both played well below their capabilities, however, one area that really shined was the special teams unit.

Will Reichard, already a Crimson Tide legend, kicked the game-winning field goal against the Longhorns in Austin last year and was phenomenal again as he was 3/3 this past weekend including a 51-yarder.

Punter, James Burnip was also outstanding for Nick Saban’s squad as he was a massive weapon for the Crimson Tide in the field position game. Burnip punted five times for an average of 52.6 yards with three being pinned inside the Longhorns 20.

For Burnip’s outstanding performance, he was named the Ray Guy punter of the week and will certainly be in contention for the award at the end of the year. Burnip also unleashed a 61-yard bomb and will be a key piece in the Tide’s attempt to turn their season around.

Legendary Raiders punter Ray Guy dies at 72

Raiders legendary punter Ray Guy dies at 72

Pro Football Hall of Fame punter Ray Guy died at the age of 72.

Guy was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and a member of the NFL’s 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. He averaged 42.4 yards over his career from 1973 to 1986.

He was the first punter drafted in the first round when chosen by the Raiders in the 1973 NFL draft.

Hall of Fame punter Ray Guy passes away at the age of 72

There has never been a better special teams player in the history of the NFL than Ray Guy. A six-time All-Pro selection, Guy was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2014 and is widely considered the best punter of all time.

On Thursday, it was announced that he had passed away at the age of 72.

Guy was a first-round pick by the Raiders in the 1973 NFL Draft and went on to play for 14 years with the team. He appeared in 207 games, averaging 42.4 yards per punt. He led the NFL in yards per punt four times and even averaged 45.3 yards per punt during his rookie season.

One of the best stats for Guy is that he had 619 straight punts without having one blocked. That stretched from the 1979 season until the end of his career in 1986. He was known for his quick leg, but also the ability to have incredible hangtime on his kicks.

We send our thoughts and prayers to the family of Guy.

Longhorns Profile Snapshot: No. 8 Ryan Bujcevski

LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster. Today, we will be looking at JR. punter Ryan Bujcevski.

Going into the 2020 football season, LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster.

Over the summer, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Tom Herman this season.

Today, we will be looking at junior punter Ryan Bujcevski.

Ryan Bujcevski, Punter

Height: 6-0 / Weight: 185

Class: Junior

Hometown: Sydney, Australia

High School: Marist Catholic College Penshurst

HS ranking (247Sports): Three-star / No. 1 position / No. 1 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Two-star

Analysis: Coming from down under, Ryan Bujcevski will be entering his third season as the starting punter for Texas. The top-ranked punter coming out of high school according to 247Sports, Ryan Bujcevski was on the Ray Guy Award watchlist going into the 2019 season.

Unfortunately, his season was cut short after injuring his shoulder against TCU. In the nine games he played in, Bujcevski averaged 41.4 yards per punt. Three of his punts surpassed 50 yards and Bujcevski was able to pin 10 punts inside the 20-yard line.

Bujcevski will pick up where he left off in 2020. While no offense wants to see the punter on the field, having a great one can be seen as a weapon for the defense. Bujcevski will once again be one of the best in the Big 12 next season.

Bills’ Corey Bojorquez punts with Hall of Famer Ray Guy in mind

Buffalo Bills punter Corey Bojorquez on Hall of Fame punter Ray Guy.

By most metrics, Buffalo Bills punter Corey Bojorquez had a better season in 2019 than his first with the team, which was also an injury-shortened season.

His average punt was only 41.9 yards last season, but he had other positive metrics. Bojorquez had a team-record 34 punts inside the 20, and his 22.8 percent return rate was lowest in the NFL.

Bojorquez improved this season with the best in mind.

The 23-year-old kicker said his inspiration is the tip-top of the punting mountain Bojorquez told the Buffalo News. It took Ray Guy 28 years to get into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but he became the only punter to make it there eventually. That’s who Bojorquez keeps in mind with his kicks.

“Ray Guy said it’s not how far you can kick it, it’s how effective you kick it,” he said.

A proper mindset for the punter to have. While Bojorquez had a solid second season, he does know he has things to work on still as well.

“There’s definitely some things I want to improve on but overall it wasn’t too bad,” Bojorquez added.

With that in mind, Kaare Vedvik was signed by the Bills this offseason. He’s a rare mix of punter and kicker. Vedvik has jumped around the NFL and does have promise. After signing with the team, the Bills made sure to announce Vedvik is competing with Bojorquez, not place kicker Stephen Hauschka.

That battle through training camp will be a winner takes all, of course. But Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott likely wants to see Bojorquez retain his job and take his game to the next level. McDermott likes to take any little advantage he can get in games.

A solid punter is one, but Bojorquez being a lefty is another.

That does play a part. The ball spins differently off a left foot than a right foot, sometimes making things harder for an opposing punt returner. But that doesn’t mean the Bills will just settle for any old punter, as Colton Schmidt learned.
