Packers WR Randall Cobb expected to be activated, play vs. Titans

The Packers are expected to get veteran slot receiver Randall Cobb back on Thursday night against the Titans.

The Green Bay Packers will likely get a boost in the passing game on Thursday night.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, veteran receiver Randall Cobb will be activated from injured reserve and is expected to play against the Titans.

Cobb injured his ankle against the New York Jets and was carted off the field fearing a season-ending injury. He got good news, was placed on injured reserve and missed the last four games.

The Packers designated Cobb for return from injured reserve on Tuesday, opening his practice window and providing an opportunity to play Thursday night if he was physically ready.

While Cobb said Tuesday he wouldn’t play if he didn’t think he was ready and acknowledged the challenges of a short week after coming off injured reserve, the veteran is clearly close to 100 percent and in a position to contribute right away.

The team has an open roster spot, likely saved for Cobb.

Over the first six games of 2022, Cobb caught 18 passes for 257 yards.

The Packers and Titans are scheduled for a 7:15 p.m. CT kickoff from Lambeau Field on Thursday night.

Packers designate WR Randall Cobb for return from injured reserve

The Packers designated WR Randall Cobb for return from injured reserve, opening the door for him to play Thursday night against the Titans.

The Green Bay Packers might be close to getting some veteran help back at wide receiver.

The team designated slot receiver Randall Cobb for return from injured reserve on Tuesday, opening the door for him to be activated to the 53-man roster in time to play Thursday night against the Tennessee Titans.

The Packers have a roster spot open after releasing receiver Amari Rodgers and running back Kylin Hill on Tuesday.

Cobb, 32, injured his ankle against the New York Jets and missed the last four weeks while on injured reserve.

By designating Cobb to return, the Packers opened up a 21-day practice window but can activate him at any time over the next three weeks.

Over the first six games of 2022, Cobb caught 18 passes for 257 yards and zero touchdowns. He caught 69.2 percent of targets and averaged 9.9 yards per target.

The return of Cobb combined with the emergence of speedy rookie Christian Watson could provide the necessary boost for the Packers passing game over the final two months of the season.

Since returning to the Packers before last season, Cobb has averaged 13.7 yard per catch, caught 70.8 percent of targets and averaged 9.7 yards per target, all terrific numbers for a complementary player. He missed seven games to injury in 2021 and now four more in 2022.

Packers place WR Randall Cobb and OL Jake Hanson on injured reserve

The Packers placed WR Randall Cobb (ankle) and OL Jake Hanson (biceps) on injured reserve, meaning they’ll have to miss at least 4 games.

The Green Bay Packers placed wide receiver Randall Cobb and offensive lineman Jake Hanson on injured reserve on Saturday. Both players were injured against the New York Jets last Sunday and were unable to practice throughout the week.

Cobb, who injured his ankle, and Hanson, who has a biceps injury, will have to miss at least the next four games before they are eligible to return from injured reserve.

Cobb, 32, caught 18 passes for 257 yards and zero touchdowns during the first six games of the 2022 season. He was injured when his ankle was rolled up on during a run play against the Jets. Despite initial fears of a season-ending injury, Cobb is expected to miss anywhere between 4-6 weeks.

Without Cobb, expect to see more of Amari Rodgers in the traditional slot receiver role.

Hanson, who started Week 1, replaced Royce Newman at right guard on the final series of the first half against the Jets but hurt his biceps during the drive and didn’t return. He played just five snaps from scrimmage. It’s unclear the severity of the injury.

Hanson’s injury puts rookie Zach Tom into the spotlight should the Packers need reinforcements along the interior of the offensive line.

In a corresponding roster move, the Packers activated receiver Sammy Watkins from injured reserve to the 53-man roster.

Packers WR Randall Cobb (ankle) expected to miss 2-4 weeks

Packers receiver Randall Cobb has a sprained ankle and will miss 2-4 weeks, per NFL Network.

Green Bay Packers receiver Randall Cobb is expected to miss 2-4 weeks with the ankle injury he suffered against the New York Jets on Sunday, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The injury, which was initially believed to be a fracture, is described as an ankle “sprain.”

Cobb, 32, was carted from the sideline to the locker room during the second half of the Packers’ loss to the Jets. He appeared emotional during the exit, likely in fear of another season lost to injury.

The timeline of 2-4 weeks makes injured reserve a possibility, but if the Packers think Cobb can return anytime before four weeks, he’ll likely remain on the 53-man roster.

The Packers play the Washington Commanders, Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys over the next four weeks.

“Yeah, it’s not going to be a one-week deal or anything like that, he’s going to miss some time, but he definitely avoided a serious injury,” coach Matt LaFleur said Monday.

Cobb has 18 catches on 26 targets for 257 yards through the first six weeks of the 2022 season.

With Cobb out and Christian Watson still recovering from a hamstring injury, the Packers may need to make a move at receiver. Sammy Watkins could come off injured reserve as soon as this week.

Packers expecting WR Randall Cobb to miss ‘some time’ with ankle injury

Matt LaFleur on Randall Cobb: “It’s not going to be a one-week deal or anything like that, he’s going to miss some time, but he definitely avoided a serious injury.”

Randall Cobb’s 2022 season isn’t over, but the Green Bay Packers are still expecting the veteran slot receiver to miss a few upcoming games after he injured his ankle in the second half of Sunday’s loss to the New York Jets.

Coach Matt LaFleur confirmed that Cobb avoided what was originally feared: a season-ending injury.

“Yeah, it’s not going to be a one-week deal or anything like that, he’s going to miss some time, but he definitely avoided a serious injury,” LaFleur said Monday.

The broadcast showed Cobb with a towel draped over his head as he left the field on a cart on Sunday, clearly emotional about the potential of his season being over.

Evaluation of the injury ruled out the worst-case scenario, and now Cobb’s 2022 season has a second life.

The Packers may end up putting Cobb on injured reserve, which would mean missing a minimum of four games.

“We’ll see where we’re at,” LaFleur said.

Cobb caught one pass for eight yards against the Jets. Through six weeks, Cobb ranks second on the team in receiving yards (257) and fourth in targets (26) and receptions (18).

In his place, second-year receiver Amari Rodgers played 24 snaps on Sunday.

Elsewhere at receiver, LaFleur said Sammy Watkins – who has missed the last four games with a hamstring injury – is close to returning and could be available for Wednesday’s practice. Placing Cobb on IR could be the roster move necessary for activating Watkins, who caught six passes for 111 yards in the Packers’ first two games.

Bumps, Bruises and Bowouts

QB Skylar Thompson (MIA) – Hand

RB Deon Jackson (IND) – Quad
WR Kendrick Bourne (NE) – Toe
WR Randall Cobb (GB) – High Ankle

WR Jaylen Waddle (MIA) – shoulder
WR Marquise Brown (ARI) – Foot
WR Robbie Anderson (CAR) – Benched
TE Cameron Brate – Neck

Chasing Ambulances

QB Skylar Thompson (MIA) – Injured his hand when it hit a helmet after he passed. Teddy Bridgewater finished the game. Tua Tagovailoa is expected to return for Week 7, which makes this inconsequential.

QB Kenny Pickett (PIT) – Suffered a concussion after a hard hit in the third quarter and did not return. Mitchell Trubisky finished the winning effort against the Buccaneers and would start again in Miami this week if needed.

QB P.J. Walker (CAR) – Injured his neck and gave way to Jacob Eason. Walker later said he would be fine for Week 7 hosting the Buccaneers, but everything in Carolina is murky right now with running backs, wideouts, and quarterbacks.

RB J.K. Dobbins (BAL) – His knee tightened and was held out from the second half. He seemed to be back to form in Week 4 but now has struggled in the last two weeks. His status for this week will be determined later in the week but he’ll likely play, the question is how much if he is active?

RB Deon Jackson (IND) – The third-string back that turned into a stud against the Jaguars left the game for most of the fourth quarter with a quad injury. Jonathan Taylor went through limited practices last week, so he’s likely to return. Jackson was a great as a replacement and makes a prudent hold for the Taylor owner.

WR Randall Cobb (GB) – Was carted off the field and was reported to have a high-ankle sprain. The early speculation is that he’ll miss  multiple weeks.  Amari Rodgers is the next man up, but the entire receiving corps for the Packers has disappointed and digging through the depth chart will not likely improve anything.

WR Jaylen Waddle (MIA) – Hurt his shoulder late in the game but had 129 yards before he left. Waddle later said that he would be okay for this week’s matchup with the Steelers, plus Tua Tagovailoa should be back as well. Barring negative practice reports, Waddle should be fine.

WR Marquise Brown (ARI) – He was injured near the end of the loss to the Seahawks when a defender fell on his foot. He wore a walking boot after the game and was limping. The Cards host the Saints on Thursday night, so there isn’t much time to heal up.

WR Robbie Anderson (CAR) – He argued with his position coach on the sideline about never getting a pass thrown to him and he was sent to the locker room in the fourth quarter. Anderson is rumored to be on the trading block and it appears that the Panthers may not want too much just to get rid of an obviously unhappy player.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

TE George Kittle (SF) – The 49ers star tight end still has not scored this season, but he led the team with eight catches for 83 yards when they fell behind and needed to abandon the run. It’s encouraging to see him return to high-volume usage, and hosting the Chiefs this week should spark the need to throw more.

TE Kyle Pitts (ATL) – He finally scored a touchdown this season but still was held to only three catches for 19 yards in the win over the 49ers. It was nice to see but cannot be considered more than just a single-play event and not a growing trend. So long as Marcus Mariota is the quarterback, there is no reason to expect Pitts to be used up to his potential.

WR Tyquan Thornton (NE) – The speedy rookie debuted in Week 5 with just two catches for seven yards. Versus the Browns, he turned in a fantasy breakout with four catches for 37 yards and a touchdown, plus three rushes for 16 yards and a second score. The lower volume of passing in New England will make him a risky start no matter how much confidence he builds, but his addition as a rusher will help him to offer more consistent stats if they continue his dual role.

TE Robert Tonyan (GB) – He’s had minimal use this year, but against the Jets, Tonyan led the Packers with ten catches for 90 yards. That may be more than just a one-week blip. The Packers lost Randall Cobb to a high-ankle sprain, so the tight end may continue to see more targets as Aaron Rodgers contends with a marginal set of receivers.

RB JaMychal Hasty (JAC) – Because two running backs just were not enough, the Jags are now using three. Travis Etienne had 12 touches, James Robinson had 13 touches, and Hasty is getting playing time. His second of three runs went for a 61-yard touchdown in the second quarter. His other two touches lost four yards. But the Jaguars are leaning toward being more of a rushing team than a passing team. Hasty adds to the committee but takes away from the other two backs.

RB Deon Jackson (IND) – The Colts missed Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines, but Jackson stepped in to great effect. He ran twelve times for 42 yards and a touchdown, plus caught ten passes for 79 yards as the top fantasy running back for the week. Taylor is likely back this week for the game in Tennessee, but Jackson could potentially cut into Hines’ role as a receiving back.

WR Rashid Shaheed (NO) – The undrafted free agent wideout was called up from the practice squad to help fill in for the three starting wideouts who were out. The Weber State product failed to catch his one pass but ran for a 44-yard touchdown on his only rush.  He’ll likely head back to the practice squad when the starters return, but the 4.4/40-time speedster looked sharp for his score.

RB Kenyan Drake (BAL) – J.K. Dobbins had his knee “stiffened up” and sat out of the second half of the loss to the Giants. Drake was limited to ten carries but gained 119 yards and a touchdown. And it wasn’t just one long run that spiked the total. He turned in runs of 30, 30, 20, and 15 yards. He stopped running in the fourth quarter when the Ravens went to a pass-heavy script. Depending on Dobbins’ health, Drake could see more use on Sunday when the Browns visit.

WR Wan’Dale Robinson (NYG) – The rookie returned from his four weeks off with a knee injury and  caught three passes for 37 yards and one touchdown. His four targets were second only to Daniel Bellinger (5). The Giants are not a good passing team, but Robinson was a second-round pick that runs a 4.4 40-time and is expected to become a starter. The Giants’ wide receiver depth chart may be the most open one in the league, so Robinson deserves a spot on a roster.

WR Allen Robinson (LAR) – After a three-game stretch that saw Robinson total seven catches for 42 yards combined, it was safe enough to give up on Robinson. Not so fast. Versus the Panthers, Robinson turned in a season-best five catches for 63 yards and one score. His six targets were second only to Cooper Kupp (8). It can’t be considered more than a one-week blip, but it also means that you cannot dump him on the waiver wire.

RB Kenneth Walker (SEA) – The second running back taken in the 2022 NFL draft ran for 97 yards and one score on 21 carries. He added two catches for 13 yards in his debut in the wake of Rashaad Penny’s season-ending leg injury. DeeJay Dallas only ran twice for one net yard, so Walker is likely to maintain his heavy workload if his success continues.

WR DeAndre Hopkins (ARI) – Returns to the Cardinals after a six-week suspension and maybe just in time since Marquise Brown injured his foot and the Cardinals play the Saints on Thursday night.

Huddle player of the week

Joe Burrow  –  The Bengals haven’t seen the same success that they had in 2021 when they went to the Super Bowl, but he just turned in his best effort of the season and the best of anyone in Week 6. Burrow threw for exactly 300 yards and three scores, plus ran for 25 yards and a fourth touchdown. His play lifted the Bengals to a win at the Saints.

Now get back to work…

Packers WR Randall Cobb avoids season-ending ankle injury

Randall Cobb thought he broke his ankle. X-rays were negative, suggesting the Packers WR has avoided a season-ending injury.

With a towel draped over his head while riding a cart off the field, Randall Cobb thought his 2022 season was over. Even his coach, Matt LaFleur, sounded as if the veteran slot receiver had suffered a significant injury when asked following the Green Bay Packers’ 27-10 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Preliminary testing on Cobb’s injured ankle provided some good news.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, X-rays on Cobb’s ankle were negative, and he’ll now need an MRI to determine the severity of his sprained ankle.

Aaron Rodgers said Cobb thought he broke his ankle, explaining the emotional ride back to the locker room in the third quarter.

That’s the good news. The bad news is Cobb will miss time. Rodgers believed short-term injured reserve (or missing four games) could be possible for one of his favorite targets.

It’s another blow to a passing game that can’t get on track to start 2022.

Cobb, 32, caught 17 passes for 249 yards during the Packers’ first five games. He entered Week 6 ranked second on the team in targets with 25.

Injuries are nothing new for Cobb, who hasn’t played a full season since 2015 and has missed at least three games in four of the last six seasons. He missed the final five games of the 2021 season after suffering a core muscle injury that required surgery.

Second-year receiver Amari Rodgers could get more play time if Cobb has to miss significant time. The Packers may also get Sammy Watkins back from injured reserve this coming week.

Packers lose Randall Cobb, Jake Hanson to injuries vs. Jets

The Packers are unlikely to have Randall Cobb or Jake Hanson for the second half against the Jets.

[mm-video type=video id=01gfh4e9tyqbaxjzx48q playlist_id=01eqbxb1xg7g19wqdc player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01gfh4e9tyqbaxjzx48q/01gfh4e9tyqbaxjzx48q-db7dc38e6425fbd810faf2b48d46e6c7.jpg]

The Green Bay Packers will likely be without both Randall Cobb and Jake Hanson for the rest of the second half on Sunday against the New York Jets.

Cobb, who was carted off in the third quarter, is questionable to return with an ankle injury, while Hanson – who replaced Royce Newman for one series at right guard to end the first half – is out with a biceps injury.

It appeared Cobb was injured on the third play of the second half when got rolled up on during the play. The veteran slot receiver was evaluated in the medical tent on the sideline and then had a towel draped over his head as he left the field on a cart. The Packers are hurting for depth at receiver with both Cobb and Christian Watson (hamstring) both injured.

Cobb has one catch on one target for eight yards.

It’s unclear when Hanson was injured. The Packers had him on the field for six plays to end the first half. He is the team’s top backup along the interior of the offensive line.

Newman returned to the game at right guard and promptly gave up a sack on third down, ending the Packers’ first drive of the third quarter.

Packers coach Matt LaFleur may be able to provide injury details following the conclusion of the game on Sunday. Green Bay goes to Washington to play the Commanders next week.

Toe Drag Swag from Packers WR Randall Cobb in London

Check out this “Toe Drag Swag” from Packers WR Randall Cobb on a 14-yard catch vs. the Giants in London.

It took a challenge from coach Matt LaFleur to confirm the catch, but Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb delivered some primetime “Toe Drag Swag” on Sunday in London.

On an off-schedule play, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers bought time to his right, allowing Cobb to break open near the sideline. While making the catch at full speed, Cobb was able to drag his second foot to complete the catch in bounds.

While originally ruled incomplete, LaFleur’s challenge made sure the 14-yard catch counted.

Check out the highlight below:

Cobb has a season-high six catches for 90 yards so far Sunday.

Unfortunately for the Packers, a sack from Dexter Lawrence on third down knocked the offense out of field goal range, so the highlight play from the veteran slot receiver didn’t end up creating a score.

The Packers still lead 20-13 in the third quarter.

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers: Randall Cobb ‘deserves more opportunities’

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers thinks Randall Cobb needs more playing time and opportunities. “Every time he touches the ball, something good happens for us.”

On both Tuesday and Wednesday, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers emphasized that he believes veteran slot receiver Randall Cobb has earned the right to more opportunities in the passing game moving forward.

Through four games, Cobb has 10 catches on 12 targets for 150 yards. Of his 10 catches, eight have gained first downs, including five on third down. He’s averaging 15 yards per catch and 12.5 yards per target.

“He looks like 2016 Randall, I think,” Rodgers said on Wednesday. “He needs more opportunities. He deserves more opportunities.”

Over the last three games, Cobb has averaged around 23 snaps per game and hasn’t played more than 40 percent of snaps from scrimmage on offense.

But the veteran is still producing big plays in big moments.

Against the Patriots, Cobb caught a 24-yard pass on 3rd-and-7, setting up a touchdown, drew a pass interference penalty on 3rd-and-6, and then caught an 11-yard pass on 3rd-and-1 to help set up the game-winning field goal in overtime.

Is playing fewer snaps helping Cobb be more efficient as a receiver? Or are the Packers losing out on big plays by having Cobb operate as a part-time player?

On Tuesday, Rodgers told “The Pat McAfee Show” that the Packers need to find more ways to get Cobb on the field.

“I really feel like he needs some more play time. He’s made plays every game he’s played,” Rodgers said. “I look forward to some more snaps for him because every time he’s out there, he’s making explosive gains.”

Cobb has three catches of at least 20 yards (one in each of the last three games) and four of 15 or more. He’s converted at least one third down in all four games this season.

“Every time he touches the ball, something good happens for us.”
