Kentucky football legend Randall Cobb joins SEC Network as studio analyst

Former Kentucky football great Randall Cobb is joining the SEC Network this fall for various projects.

Former NFL Pro Bowler Randall Cobb is set to join SEC Network as a college football studio analyst.

The former Kentucky Wildcat, Cobb played in the NFL for 13 seasons, including 10 years with the Green Bay Packers.

He will appear on select editions of SEC Now throughout the fall and will also join co-host Alyssa Lang on Out of Pocket Presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors to fuse football and fun each week.

Cobb was selected by the Packers in the 2011 NFL Draft following his junior season at Kentucky. He registered nearly 3,000 yards and tallied 35 touchdowns during his three-year tenure.

Throughout his 13 years in the NFL, he totaled over 7,600 yards with 54 touchdowns, including a career-high 1,287 yards in the 2014 campaign to earn him a spot in the Pro Bowl. A native of Maryville, Tenn., Cobb was inducted into the Kentucky Pro Sports Hall of Fame in 2023.

“I am incredibly excited to be coming home to the SEC with this new role,” Cobb said in a press release from ESPN. “The level of greatness this conference provides year after year is unmatched – I cannot wait to return to the conference family with this SEC Network crew.”

Cobb played quarterback, wide receiver, and returner under Rich Brooks and Joker Phillips from 2008-2010, setting the SEC single-season record for all-purpose yardage (2,396 yards in 2010) and the Kentucky career record for touchdowns (37).

Former Packers WR Randall Cobb set to join SEC Network as studio analyst

WR Randall Cobb, who played 10 seasons with the Packers, will join the ESPN network as a studio analyst.

Former Green Bay Packers receiver Randall Cobb, a 2011 draft pick who ended up playing 10 seasons for the franchise, is retiring from the National Football League and transitioning to work in television. ESPN announced Cobb will join the SEC Network as a college football studio analyst.

UPDATE: In a tweet, Cobb said he’s not “officially retired.”

“I am incredibly excited to be coming home to the SEC with this new role,” said Cobb. “The level of greatness this conference provides year after year is unmatched – I cannot wait return to the conference family with this SEC Network crew.”

Cobb, who finished his career with 630 catches, played 13 total NFL seasons between 2011 and 2023.

Cobb spent last season with the New York Jets. A second-round pick of the Packers in 2011, Cobb played his first eight seasons in Green Bay (2011-18) before spending one year in Houston (2019) and one year in Dallas (2020). He returned to the Packers via trade and played the 2021 and 2022 seasons in Green Bay.

Cobb made the Pro Bowl in 2014 after catching 91 passes for 1,287 yards and 12 touchdowns. He caught 532 passes — the fifth most in Packers history — and scored 47 touchdowns while with the Packers.

Cobb is almost certain to be a future member of the Packers Hall of Fame. Like other former Packers, Cobb could return to Green Bay to retire as a member of the organization in the near future.

Jaire Alexander sees some ‘young Randall Cobb’ in Packers WR Jayden Reed

Jayden Reed is reminding Jaire Alexander of a young Randall Cobb.

Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander can see shades of a former Packers great when he looks at the overall game of ascending second-year wide receiver Jayden Reed.

Asked about Reed in the locker room on Wednesday, Alexander immediately pointed to Randall Cobb — who caught over 500 passes and produced almost 7,000 total yards over 10 seasons as a slot receiver with the Packers.

“He has full potential,” Alexander said. “He reminds me of a young Randall Cobb.”

And Alexander thinks Reed could be even better.

“He’s hungry. When you got a young guy coming in who’s hungry for the ball, they’re going to make their plays. And you see it,” Alexander said.

Reed led the Packers in catches (64), receiving yards (794) and total touchdowns (10) as a rookie in 2023. Like Cobb for so many years, Reed got the ball in a variety of ways — the 2023 second-round pick handled 11 rushing attempts and was often the target of pop passes and designed touches during his first season. His 75 total touches gained 912 yards, and he added 94 yards on 13 punt returns.

Cobb was listed at 5-10 and 192 pounds. Reed is 5-11 and 187. Both are short but compact receivers who can win in a variety of ways before and after the catch.

Reed can produce from the slot, on gadget-type plays and as a returner, and he has also has legitimate vertical speed, possibly making him a more dynamic all-around threat than Cobb.

Can Reed become Jordan Love’s best friend on (and off?) the field like Cobb was for Aaron Rodgers for so many years? Reed aced the test in Year 1. Year 2 for Cobb in Green Bay finished with 80 catches and over 1,000 scrimmage yards, but both marks look achievable for Reed if he can stay healthy in 2024.

Jets Week 14 snap counts: Playing time breakdown from win vs. Texans

A look at how the snaps were distributed from the Jets’ Week 14 win against the Houston Texans.

The Jets needed a win not only to keep their season alive but also to build back morale after what had to be a very stressful week at the office. New York snapped a five-game losing streak firmly with a 30-6 win over the Houston Texans.

Because the Jets were up comfortably, they were able to empty the bench and get other players some snaps late in the game, a luxury the Jets haven’t been afforded much lately. We’ll take a look at how the snaps were distributed on offense and defense from Week 14.

Jets Week 13 inactives: Randall Cobb, Billy Turner among group

Randall Cobb and Billy Turner are among the Jets inactive for Week 13 against the Atlanta Falcons.

The Jets announced their inactives for Week 13 against the Atlanta Falcons. Mekhi Becton is back and will return to his left tackle position. Billy Turner is among those inactive as Carter Warren will get the start at right tackle.

Also back to being inactive is wide receiver Randall Cobb, who was active last week with the Jets benching Allen Lazard for a week. With Lazard back in action, Cobb goes back to the bench.

The full list of inactives for the Jets are as follows:

– WR Randall Cobb
– OL Billy Turner
– OL Austin Deculus
– DE Carl Lawson
– LB Zaire Barnes
– CB Bryce Hall
– QB Zach Wilson (emergency third quarterback)

Jets Week 11 inactives: Michael Carter II out vs. Bills

Jets Week 11 inactives: Michael Carter II out vs. Bills

The Jets released one Michael Carter a few days ago and now will be without the other for Week 11 against the Buffalo Bills.

Nickel cornerback Michael Carter II is among the inactives Sunday. Carter was a late addition to the injury report with a hamstring injury and was questionable for Sunday. He is now officially out. Look for Brandin Echols to step in at the slot corner position in place of Carter.

The rest of the Jets’ inactives:

WR Randall Cobb
LB Sam Eguavoen
OL Billy Turner
LB Chazz Surratt
DL Carl Lawson
OL Austin Deculus

The Jets are indeed starting to go a bit younger Sunday. Israel Abanikanda and Jason Brownlee are both active Sunday and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Jets start using Jeremy Ruckert more as well.

But on a day where the Jets really could use all hands on deck as they look for the season sweep of Buffalo, not having Carter in the defensive backfield will certainly sting.

Jets Week 10 inactives: Will McDonald out, makes room for Carl Lawson

Jets Week 10 inactives: Will McDonald out, makes room for Carl Lawson

The inactives are out for the New York Jets in Week 10 against the Las Vegas Raiders. It was already known that Billy Turner would be due to his injured finger. Duane Brown was ruled out as well, but he hasn’t been activated from injured reserve yet.

The player that was the biggest question mark this week was defensive end Will McDonald. The first-round pick suffered an ankle injury this week and missed practice Friday. He was listed as questionable and was officially deemed inactive for Sunday. As a result, Carl Lawson is back in the rotation.

Here are your inactives for the Jets for Week 10.

Jets’ Randall Cobb fined for dirty hit on Giants’ Bobby McCain

The NFL has fined Jets wide receiver Randall Cobb nearly $14,000 for his illegal and dirty hit on New York Giants safety Bobby McCain.

From the very instant it happened, Aiyda Ghahramani, the wife of New York Jets wide receiver Randall Cobb, knew a fine was coming.

“That was a great block, I thought,” Ghahramani said laughing. “Probably get a fine here in the mail soon.”

Although both Ghahramani and Cobb, who was laughing in the huddle with Aaron Rodgers, thought it was funny, New York Giants safety Bobby McCain had to exit the game with a concussion due to the dirty hit.

The NFL didn’t find the illegal hit, for which Cobb was penalized, nearly as funny as the Jets duo or Ghahramani. They slapped the veteran with a near-$14,000 fine for the outlawed blindside block late this week.

The hit led to an exchange between Rodgers and Giants linebacker Jihad Ward that has gone back and forth for nearly a week.

The two had to be separated during the game and that exchange was shown, in part, on HBO’s Hard Knocks. Despite video evidence, Rodgers claims Ward was lying when he said the quarterback and Cobb were laughing about the hit in the huddle.

“I think he’s making (expletive) up,” Rodgers said, via Connor Hughes of SNY.

The league office ultimately saw (and heard) what Ward did and decided to levy a fine on Cobb.

Neither Rodgers nor Ward were fined for their onfield exchange.

Randall Cobb fined for hit on Giants safety Bobby McCain

Randall Cobb fined for the hit on Bobby McCain.

The hit heard around the world — or at least highlighted on Hard Knocks — just made Randall Cobb’s wallet a little lighter.

The Jets wide receiver was hit with a fine of $13,889 for his hit on Giants safety Bobby McCain during their preseason meeting, a hit that put McCain in the concussion protocol and caused Giants linebacker Jihad Ward to believe Cobb and quarterback Aaron Rodgers were laughing at McCain and the hit in the huddle. That started the budding feud between Rodgers and Ward that saw Rodgers call Ward a liar.

“He thought we were laughing at his teammate? That never happened,” Rodgers said earlier this week, via ESPN. “That never happened and I think he’s making (expletive) up. I don’t care.”

Whether they were laughing or not, Cobb now has to fork over some money as a result of his hit. So not only did he hear it — even if jokingly — from Rodgers, he now has heard about it from the league.

Randall Cobb and Aaron Rodgers joke about preseason blindside hit in Hard Knocks preview clip

“Cobb, he lost all his (expletive) training camp money.”

Tuesday brings episode No. 4 of Hard Knocks with the New York Jets at 10om ET on HBO. NFL Films shared a preview clip on X that focuses on wide receiver Randall Cobb. It was a clip of his blindside hit penalty in the preseason finale against the New York Giants and his wife saying they’ll expect a fine in the mail.

Cobb got back to the huddle and joked with quarterback Aaron Rodgers about the time.

“Cobb, he lost all his (expletive) training camp money,” Rodgers said in the huddle after the play.

“My bad, man,” Cobb replied.

“What are you doing, bro? This ain’t 2014,” Rodgers said.

“I forgot,” Cobb said. “I blacked out.”

This is just another example of the type of close relationship Rodgers and Cobb have and we’ll see more of the relationship as Hard Knocks continues and throughout the season as Cobb starts to take on more of a role in the slot and overall in the offense with Corey Davis now out of football.
