Former Raiders CB Rock Ya-Sin signs on with Ravens on 1-year deal

Former Raiders CB Rock Ya-Sin signs on with Ravens on 1-year deal

Among the handful of decent starters who were headed for free agency this offseason was cornerback Rock Ya-Sin. His departure left a hold at cornerback which the Raiders seemed to try to patch by bringing in some depth players to compete for his spot.

This led many to believe they were not done at the position. And with Ya-Sin still on the market after the conclusion of the draft, he seemed like a fairly good option to return.

Not anymore.

The veteran cornerback today agreed to terms with the Ravens on a one-year, $6 million deal according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

There are other free agents still out there who could be decent options including Shaquill Griffin who — along with Ya-Sin — made my recent list of the top five remaining free agents who would make sense for the Raiders.

Currently the Raiders cornerbacks include the likes of Nate Hobbs, Tyler Hall, Amik Robertson, Sam Webb, Brandon Facyson, Duke Shelley, David Long Jr, and 4th round pick Jakorian Bennett.

Among them, only Nate Hobbs is a proven starter. Of the new additions, Duke Shelley’s five starts last season leads the way.

NFL Free Agency figures to pick up again: Here are 5 great options for Raiders

5 great options for Raiders as Free Agency figures to heat up again.

Typically you think of free agency as happening in March. That’s when those players whose contracts are up with their clubs are able to negotiate and sign elsewhere. And for the most part, the top options fly off the market, following by a couple more “waves”. Then it cools down and teams shift their focus to the draft.

But that doesn’t mean it’s over. It’s more of a break before it starts up again.

There is another wave starting up now. Why? Well, two reasons, really: One, it’s when players can be signed and it will no longer count against the team’s compensatory pick total. And two, because the draft is done which means teams know what areas they were able to address and which still require some attention.

For the Raiders, they were able to address basically edge rusher and tight end for certain.

At seven overall they got edge rusher Tyree Wilson and at 35 overall they got tight end Michael Mayer. Those are the two sure starting caliber players. After that, there’s still plenty of room for upgrades and competition.

Friday the Raiders cleared up some cap space by restructuring Chandler Jones’s deal, giving him about $4 million to spend on free agency should they wish to use it.

Here a short list of some free agents still out there who could make sense for the Raiders

Raiders sign former Patriots QB Brian Hoyer to 2-year deal

Josh McDaniels adds his third former Patriots QB to Raiders roster

The influx of former Patriots continues in Las Vegas. Including Josh McDaniels today signing his third former Patriots QB.

Tuesday the team signed veteran Brian Hoyer to a two-year deal.

The 15-year veteran spent the first three years of his NFL career in New England and four of the past five years.

In between, he spent time with the Browns, Texans, Bears, 49ers, and Colts. He has started a total of 40 games, though three of those games were in a Patriots uniform.

The last two starts at QB for the Raiders were by former Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham. And this offseason, the Raiders made former Patriots and 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo their top priority in free agency.

On top of that, they added former Patriots wide receiver Jakobi Meyers in free agency

The offense stumbled last season in Las Vegas, in part because of difficulties with Derek Carr implementing McDaniels’s offense. Clearly he’s making sure he has plenty of QBs who know his offense on the team.

Newly signed Raiders get their numbers

The numbers are in. Jersey numbers for the newest Raiders that is.

A host of new players have entered the building for the Raiders. They will begin the first offseason training sessions soon, which means they must have numbers. Here are the new Raiders players and the number they will be sporting.

S Marcus Epps — 1
WR DeAndre Carter — 3
P Julian Diaz — 9
QB Jimmy Garoppolo — 10
WR Phillip Dorsett — 11
WR Jacoby Meyers — 16
CB Duke Shelley — 23
CB David Long Jr — 24
S Jaquan Johnson — 26
CB Brandon Facyson — 31
S Jalen Elliott — 40
LB Robert Spillane — 42
LS Jacob Bobenmoyer — 50
DI Adam Butler — 69
WR Cam Sims — 81
TE Austin Hooper — 82
TE OJ Howard — 88
DI John Jenkins — 95
DI Joran Willis — 99

Last year the NFL made single digit numbers available for more than just QBs and punters and kickers. Epps and Carter each took the opportunity to nab one.

This year the NFL announced players are allowed to wear the number zero. No player has been assigned that number yet, but there’s always the draft for that.

Former Chargers WR DeAndre Carter signs with Raiders

DeAndre Carter scored a TD to help the Chargers beat the Raiders to open last season. Now he’s switching sides.

Once upon a time the Raiders signed DeAndre Carter to their practice squad. The former undrafted free agent out of Sacramento State spent most of the 2015 season on the Raiders practice squad before being released. Two weeks later the Patriots added him to their practice squad.

Carter stuck around with the Patriots for the 2016 offseason and training camp and was waived with the final roster cuts.

But apparently in his time in New England, he made enough of an impression on Josh McDaniels to have him wanting a reunion in Las Vegas because after a free agent visit Monday, Carter was signed to a one-year deal, according to Jordan Schultz.

Carter had a breakout season in 2022, starting seven games for the Chargers and catching 46 passes for 538 yards and three touchdowns. Four of those catches for 78 yards and a touchdown came against the Raiders in their two meetings last season. So, that probably made an impression on McDaniels as well.

His touchdown catch came from 23 yards out and the Raiders could use a deep threat. That’s where the 5-8, 188-pounder will try to carve out his niche in Las Vegas.

NFL mock draft database: Raiders post-free agency pick makes hard shift to defense

Post-free agency mock draft roundup sees Raiders pick make hard shift to defense

We are now a week into the new league year and the official opening of free agency. Giving us a nice sample size of mock drafts to see how the landscape has changed since free agency began.

The landscape has seen seismic shifts with regard to what the NFL world predicts the Raiders will do with their selection at seven overall.

Most notably the shift has gone from almost entirely offense to majority defense.

Prior to the start of free agency, of the 55 mock drafts I had collected, 52 of them were for offensive players. Just three had the Raiders going defense.

Since free agency, those numbers have flipped.

Most picked players: Christian Gonzalez (8), Will Levis (8), Tyree Wilson (4), Jalen Carter (4), Devon Witherspoon (3), Paris Johnson Jr (3), Joey Porter Jr (2), Anthony Richardson (2*), Peter Skoronski (2).

*Both picks via trade up

Picks by position: Cornerback (13), Quarterback (10), Tackle (6), Defensive interior (5), Edge rusher (4)

Offense: 16

Defense: 22

The two most picked positions for the Raiders prior to free agency were by far quarterback and tackle. The Raiders added QB Jimmy Garoppolo and retained starting right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor. Both moves likely contributed to opinions that they would go with upgrading their bottom five defense.

Josh McDaniels sees 3 defensive starters in Raiders free agent additions

It’s hard to see how Raiders upgraded their defense in free agency but Josh McDaniels sees 3 of them as starters

Quarterback was the top priority for the Raiders this offseason. So, they cut Derek Carr and replaced him with Jimmy Garoppolo. After that, most would agree the attention should turn to the defense which was ranked in the bottom five last season.

Despite the many lists of best available free agent defenders, the Raiders went with exactly none of them, instead going with a few less heralded free agents.

The first wave featured three defenders — linebacker Robert Spillane, cornerback Brandon Facyson, and Marcus Epps.

The Raiders see all three as starters.

“We felt like with Marcus and Robert and Brandon we might have been able to get three starters at different levels of the defense there with a corner and a linebacker and a safety,” said head coach Josh McDaniels Monday at the owners meetings in Arizona.

Of those three, only Epps had more than five starts last season and it was his only season as a full time starter in his four-year career.

As for Spillane and Facyson they have never been full time starters. Spillane is expected to come in an start at middle linebacker, replacing Denzel Perryman who the Raiders allowed to leave in free agency. While Facyson returns to Las Vegas where he started nine games for the Raiders in 2021 — more than the rest of his career combined (eight).

The biggest splashes the Raiders were on offense with Garopplo and wide receiver Jakobi Meyers. The defense, the Raiders seemed to be going for quantity over quality. And most important affordability.

“We felt like we probably needed to add a quantity of players relative to either starts or depth,” said McDaniels. “And the tricky part is going in and based on the market of certain positions, it was going to be tougher to address position A and then you can’t really do much else because of the cost of it. We tried to weigh all those options out to see what made the most sense.”

Other defensive additions included DL Jordan Willis, DT John Jenkins, CB Duke Shelley, CB David Long, and S Jaquon Johnson. The five players combined for 12 starts last season with Shelley’s five starts leading the way. So, yeah, quantity is certainly one word to describe the Raiders defensive additions.

Meanwhile they let 2022 starters Perryman, CB Rock Ya-Sin, S Duron Harmon, and DT Andrew Billings leave in free agency. So, as of this moment it’s hard to see these change in starters as an improvement.

Raiders add former Dolphins veteran DT John Jenkins

Raiders add veteran DT John Jenkins

For the ninth time in John Jenkins’s career, he will don a new uniform. The journeyman veteran defensive tackle has signed on with the Las Vegas Raiders.

The 33-year-old enters his 11th season in the NFL, having played for five different teams.

Jenkins entered the NFL as a 3rd round pick by the New Orleans Saints out of Georgia. Since then he’s played with the Seahawks, Giants, two stints with the Bears, and three stints with the Dolphins.

The 6-3, 335-pounder has played in 116 career games with 30 starts. Just four of his 11 seasons he appeared in 14 games or more and just three times has he compiled 30 or more tackles, the last time being 2019 with the Dolphins.

Jenkins is the first interior defensive lineman the Raiders have added this offseason.

If they’re serious about upgrading the interior defensive line — and there’s no real indication of that thus far — Jenkins will be a hard pressed to make the team, let alone see significant playing time.

WR Keelan Cole tests free agency, returns to Raiders

Keelan Cole re-signing with Raiders

The free agents continue to trickle in for the Raiders. So too do those free agents who they allowed to see what was out there and then welcomed back. Keelan Cole is the latest.

The veteran receiver returns to the Raiders after spending last season with the team, appearing in 14 games with three starts.

He was in a heated competition at receiver last offseason. One he would initially lose out on when he was released with the final wave of cuts prior to the start of the season along with fellow veteran Demarcus Robinson.

Cole was then added to the practice squad and on September 6 was signed to the active roster. He didn’t see any playing time over the first couple weeks and had his first catch in week three.

It was Mack Hollins who won that competition and went on to have a solid season, starting 16 games and putting up career-highs in catches (57) and yards (690). Hollins signed on with the Atlanta Falcons recently.

Cole was not in such demand, so he will again try to win a spot on the Raiders’ roster this offseason.

Former Raiders TE Foster Moreau ‘stepping away from football’ after cancer diagnosis

Foster Moreau ‘stepping away from football’ after cancer diagnosis

This offseason was supposed to be Foster Moreau’s chance to earn a long term free agent deal. And he was holding a free agent visit in New Orleans, when he received terrible news.

While taking his physical with the Saints — often the last step in the process before signing his new deal — they discovered he has cancer.

Moreau took it in stride, instead focusing on the positive as the early detection may save his life.

Moreau was a fourth round pick by the Raiders out of LSU. He appeared in 61 games, starting 34 games in four seasons and the number two tight end across from Darren Waller.

Moreau outplayed his draft status and was highly regarded as a blocking tight end with surprisingly good hands.

The moment he recovers from this, there should be plenty of interest to welcome him back to the NFL.

It was a pleasure coving him for four seasons with the Raiders and we wish him a full and speedy recovery.
