Spartans offer USC transfer LB Raesjon Davis

Michigan State football is looking to snag a linebacker transfer prospect from a fellow Big Ten team

Michigan State football is looking to snag a linebacker transfer prospect from a fellow Big Ten team.

USC transfer linebacker Raesjon Davis announced on Monday evening that he’s received an offer from the Spartans. Davis made the notable announcement via social media platform X.

Davis is a former four-star prospect that was a top 100 recruit in the 2021 class. He appeared in 37 games during his four years with the Trojans, recording a total 31 tackles. This past season, he played in three games and was able to redshirt to preserve his final year of eligibility.

According to his X account, Davis has picked up offers from UNLV, Oregon State, Colorado State and Fresno State since entering the portal.

Lincoln Riley insists Raesjon Davis and Shane Lee will have meaningful roles on USC defense

#USC fans want to see a lot more of Raesjon Davis on the field. Lincoln Riley says he’ll be more involved. We shall see against Colorado.

The impatience of USC fans — a good and appropriate impatience, it should be said — is being manifested in a number of ways after the bad showing against Arizona State. One central expression of restlessness among the fan base: Give Raesjon Davis more reps at linebacker.

First things first: Mason Cobb, who did not play particularly well against ASU, needed some work. He needed to get back into game-playing shape after missing the previous two games with an injury and having not played since the August 26 season opener versus San Jose State. The coaches were right to give Cobb a lot of work so that he can shake off the rust and be better later in the season.

However, that work came at the expense of Davis, who definitely needs to get a lot more playing time and could become a very important part of this defense if given the chance.

Lincoln Riley, as shown below, claims to hear the fan base and knows he needs to make sure Davis gets a legitimate shot to play a major role on this defense. We will see how many reps he gets this Saturday against Colorado:

The Mason Cobb-Raesjon Davis situation requires nuanced thinking at USC

The coaching staff is handling Mason Cobb properly, but Raesjon Davis needs to get more snaps. Let’s explain this complicated tension point.

USC linebacker Mason Cobb did not look good against Arizona State. His speed did not seem up to par. Why did the coaching staff give him so many reps? Why didn’t Raesjon Davis play more? These are good questions from USC fans after the Arizona State game.

Let’s talk about this point a little more.

On the matter of Mason Cobb specifically, let’s realize that Cobb did not play since the San Jose State opener. He had not played any of the previous three weekends (one of which USC had off). The coaching staff needed to put Cobb on the field and give him a vigorous, strenuous workout. If he wasn’t up to par, accumulated rust played a role. He needed the playing time. Cobb is now in a better situation in terms of building up stamina and fitness heading into the Colorado game. He needs to be in game shape for Notre Dame on October 14.

However, while the coaching staff did need to give Cobb a lot of reps, there has to be some way that Raesjon Davis gets more playing time. Davis was one of the very few USC players who played well in the Cotton Bowl against Tulane. He has not been overextended in terms of workload. The staff has to find a way to get him on the field and give him more of a chance to contribute. Linebacker play was not great against Arizona State. Raesjon Davis deserves a chance to see what he can do. It might change the dynamic on this defense for the better.

Expanded role for Raesjon Davis needs to be an important piece for Alex Grinch in 2023

If Alex Grinch can develop Raesjon Davis and make him a tackling machine, USC’s D becomes a lot better. Grinch must prove to the skeptics he can develop players.

There were a lot of questionable decisions made by USC coaches in the Cotton Bowl loss against Tulane. Lincoln Riley’s refusal to throw the ball on the 1-yard line led to the game-changing safety which paved the way for a Tulane comeback win. Having Mario Williams returning kickoffs was met with some questions.

Also: Why did Raesjon Davis not play more — not only in the Cotton Bowl, but in previous games? Alex Grinch has to answer that question.

The USC Trojans’ defense broke down once again, and Grinch became the hot topic, although Lincoln Riley decided to bring him back for the 2023 season.

Nonetheless, there was one impressive player who stood out to Riley and the Trojans, and it was an unexpected one: linebacker Raesjon Davis.

With Shane Lee and Eric Gentry ahead of him, Davis had trouble finding playing time. (However, both players were injured this past season, which could have given Davis a chance to play more.)

In the Cotton Bowl, Davis had a season-high three tackles and really impressed Riley and the coaching staff (h/t Trevor Booth of USCFootball.com).

“He’s one that’s exciting,” Riley said. “You know, he came in, I think, came in the game and had some – in the game where we weren’t tackling well – came in and had some really nice kind of forceful, confident tackles. And that really showed up.”

It was a positive sign for Riley, and that could mean more playing time for Davis in 2023.

“We were excited of what we saw in Raesjon, and he was one of the guys we thought that made it a little bit of a jump in the bowl practices. And were we excited about some of the plays in that game? Absolutely we were.”

The Trojans are mega-talented on offense — that’s no secret. However, the defense needs a massive overhaul, and perhaps Raesjon Davis can become a significant player next season.

Alex Grinch definitely has to develop him and Korey Foreman if USC is to make the forward strides fans rightly expect.

Ohio State loses out on four-star linebacker Raesjon Davis

Raesjon Davis loved his visit to Ohio State, but ultimately chose to stay closer to home.

Four-star linebacker, Raesjon Davis has made his college decision, and, unfortunately, it wasn’t the news Ohio State fans were hoping for. Davis picked Southern Cal to spend his days playing college football.

This doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. Almost all of the experts believed the Mater Dei High School standout was all but a lock for the Trojans. Of course, there was a spark of hope after Davis and his family took an unofficial visit to Columbus and gave rave reviews of their visit.

Ultimately, Davis decided to stay closer to home, something he had said was important to him after decommitting from LSU in late fall. Davis made his intentions known live on CBS Sports HQ this morning.

This gives USC and coach Clay Helton another big catch in their 2021 class, which sits seventh nationally according to 247 Sports.

Ohio State fans can watch Raesjon Davis commit live on CBS Sports HQ

Watch live to find out if Raesjon Davis will pick Ohio State. He’ll be committing live on CBS Sports HQ Wednesday morning.

The early signing period has kind of taken away the excitement of national signing day. Remember when a major recruit would be sitting in his high school gym with four or five hats sitting in front of him and his family? Then after a short speech thanking any and everyone around, select the hat of his school destination followed by an eruption of cheers.

While most major recruits have already committed, there is a handful of those who will be making their decision today, old school style. One of those is Reasjon Davis, a four-star linebacker out of California.

With most believing Davis will pick USC, there is some hope in Buckeye nation after an unofficial visit to Columbus just two weeks ago. Davis and his family said they had a great trip and that Ohio State definitely moved up his list.

You can watch Davis pick where he will sign live on CBS Sports HQ today at 11:30 am EST.

We kind of have a feeling of how it will go, but there’s that small voice saying… just maybe.

Four-star 2021 Ohio State linebacker target Raesjon Davis sets announcement date

According to 247Sports, Ohio State 4-star linebacker target Raesjon Davis will announce his college choice Weds. at 11:30 a.m. EST.

If you’ve been following the Ohio State recruiting news as of late, you’ve no doubt be tracking the developments of four-star 2021 linebacker Raesjon Davis. The 6-foot, 1-inch, 215-pounder out of Mater Dei High School was originally committed to LSU but opened things back up. Since then, he has narrowed his choice to USC, Oregon, and yes — Ohio State.

That means the Buckeyes are going against two West Coast schools for a West Coast guy. However, based on a conversation Davis had with Greg Biggins of 247Sports, Ohio State’s chances of landing him have increased since his visit to campus last weekend.

Davis is currently ranked as the No. 4 outside linebacker and No. 48 overall prospect in the 2021 class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

And now, we know when he will be making his decision as well. It looks like Davis will be announcing his choice during the 247Sports National Signing Day Show at 11:30 a.m. EST Wednesday.

Davis is one of two main priorities the Buckeyes are still looking to land, with the other being five-star defensive end, J.T. Tuimoloau, who won’t be making his choice until at least April.

Stay tuned …

It sure looks like four-star linebacker Raesjon Davis had a great time visiting Ohio State

By the looks of things, four-star 2021 linebacker Raesjon Davis enjoyed his visit to Ohio State with his parents this past weekend.

Ohio State is looking to put the final touches on its fantabulous 2021 football recruiting class. While most of the class is already on campus as early enrollees, there’s still a couple of big fish out there that could still decide to sign with the Buckeyes when the traditional National Signing Day gets here.

One of those two is four-star linebacker Raesjon Davis out of the powerhouse Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California. He is a former LSU commit that reopened his commitment, and Ohio State has been making a late push for his services. So much so, that he and his parents made a trip all the way from Southern California to Columbus to check things out this weekend.

With the recruiting dead period still in effect, he couldn’t meet in person with any of the coaching staff, but you can bet they were in touch via text message and phone as Davis and family toured the city.

According to tweets Davis shared, it sure looks like he and his parents had one whale of a time. First, we witnessed the following tweet that raised some eyebrows.

“Might be back soon.” Hmmm, what could that mean. Either Davis is trolling and teasing the OSU fanbase or he is seriously considering making Columbus his home for college.

But that wasn’t all. Davis was also retweeting others that seemed to be excited about how his trip went.

We’ll have more on this saga as it continues. There’s reason to be excited because it appears as though the OSU coaching staff really wants Davis to be a part of things. He is ranked as the No. 4 outside linebacker in the 2021 class and No. 45 overall prospect according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Could there be some scarlet and gray in his future? We will likely find out very soon.

Four-star linebacker Raesjon Davis to visit Ohio State this weekend

According to 247Sports, four-star 2021 outside linebacker Raesjon Davis is planning on visiting Ohio State this weekend.

It looks like the Ohio State football program will be keenly interested in a potential visitor this weekend. Not in the traditional sense because of the recruiting dead period put in place by the NCAA because of the coronavirus pandemic, but four-star linebacker Raesjon Davis will still be checking things out according to 247Sports’ Greg Biggins (subscription required).

“I’m  really excited about it,” Davis told 247Sports. “I actually visited once before with my Premium 7v7 team a couple of years ago but I wanted my parents to come out and see it. We leave Friday and I’ll be out there all weekend.

Davis is one of two main priority targets remaining for OSU’s 2021 class, with the other being 5-star defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau. He was originally committed to LSU but reopened his commitment and is looking to decide between LSU, Ohio State, Oregon, USC, and Vanderbilt. Davis has been wanting to get his parents to Columbus and get a feel for the campus to help make that decision, so this is potentially huge news.

Davis is rated as the No. 4 outside linebacker in the class of 2022 according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings and Ohio State would love to get him in the fold. Current crystal ball predictions have him leaning towards USC, but news of a visit all the way from Santa Ana, California says he is serious about what OSU has to offer.

As we get any kind of feedback on his visit, we’ll provide some updates.

Ohio State in the running to add 4-star linebacker to 2021 class

Four-star linebacker Raesjon Davis has decommitted from LSU and the Buckeyes are back in play. Can OSU land the highly coveted prospect?

The future looks bright in Columbus, and it could be getting brighter. Last week, Ohio State signed what looks to be one of the best recruiting classes in Buckeye football history. And there may be more to come.

Raesjon Davis is the No. 4 outside linebacker and No. 48 player overall, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Davis received offers from a boatload of power five schools, but ultimately made a commitment to Ed Orgeron and the LSU Tigers on Jan. 1 of 2020.

Despite other recruits decommitting from the Tigers amid a rough year in Baton Rouge, Davis had stayed true… until yesterday when he announced via Twitter that he, too, was stepping back from his commitment to explore his options.

Experts believe the race is down to two teams, Ohio State and USC, for Davis’ services. He was supposed to make an official visit to Columbus on Dec. 12 for the Michigan game, which of course did not happen. He has, however, been to Columbus on a couple of occasions.

With just under two months until signing day, anything can happen. But if the Buckeyes can land Davis and highly coveted defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau, an already special class gets that much better, and could finish ahead of Alabama for the top-rated class in the country.
