Former Bills OL Quinton Spain: ‘Wrong person’ fired in Buffalo

Former #Bills OL Quinton Spain: ‘Wrong person’ fired in Buffalo:

Quinton Spain didn’t say a name but there is one that’s suggested: Sean McDermott.

Upon learning the news that his ex team, the Buffalo Bills, fired offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, the former offensive lineman for the team voiced his opinion.

Taking to social media, Spain replied to the report of Dorsey’s firing by ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter by saying the Bills fired the “wrong person.”

Spain’s post can be found below:

Spain had his ups and downs with the Bills but in 2020 he was released in the middle of October. That was only six games into a three-year contract extension he signed with the team. He originally signed in Buffalo ahead of the 2019 season.

The offensive lineman posted some cryptic messages after his release, even saying “only if they knew the real reason.”

From there, Spain went on to play for the Cincinnati Bengals. In February 2022 ahead of last year’s Super Bowl during his media availability prior to the game, Spain said he and McDermott “did not see eye-to-eye” which led to his release and added the coach was trying to “mess up his career.”

All things considered, many think Spain meant McDermott.

Bengals players lobby for Jessie Bates extension, Quinton Spain return

Bengals players want to see a few things happen in free agency.

Current Cincinnati Bengals players have been outspoken in their desire to see star safety Jessie Bates get an extension this summer.

They’ve also been pretty active in trying to recruit outside free agents.

Take cornerback Mike Hilton, for example. He recently publicly advocated for the Bengals to go get free-agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore. That may or may not happen based on what Gilmore wants and how much more money the Bengals want to spend, but it’s not the first time Hilton has used social media to recruit.

And now Hilton has used that social media presence to ask for the Bates extension again:

And then there is newly-extended defensive tackle B.J. Hill using his platform to say the Bengals need to get veteran guard Quinton Spain back on the roster:

Spain is a question mark as far as a return goes because he was at one of the four spots the team needed to upgrade this offseason. They’ve upgraded the other three and — so far — signaled that second-round product Jackson Carman will get a chance to earn the starting gig in camp.

No matter how it plays out, it’s always interesting to see current players hit the recruiting trail when it comes to team moves.

Bengals’ Quinton Spain did not see ‘eye to eye’ with Bills’ Sean McDermott

Former #Bills OL Quinton Spain landed with the #Bengals and had plenty to say about his ex team this week:

Former Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Quinton Spain has found his way to Super Bowl 56 with the Cincinnati Bengals.

During his press conference prior to the game, he did not hold back on his former team and ex head coach, Sean McDermott.

Spain started all 16 games for Buffalo in 2019 and then landed a three-year extension. The ensuing year, he was cut by the team.

It was a bit of a surprise to see Spain both benched for two games and then him being released. He decided that talking about it prior to the biggest game of his life against the Los Angeles Rams was the right time to discuss it.

“The situation there was, me and (Sean) McDermott, we didn’t see eye to eye,” Spain said. “I feel like they was trying to mess up my career so I was a man and asked them, ‘can they release me so I can start over?’ At first, they didn’t want to do that, but at the end of the day they released me, so I’m happy they released me.”

Spain clearly has some strong feelings about his former team. He also did immediately following his departure.

The offensive lineman posted some cryptic messages afterward, even saying “only if they knew the real reason.”

Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane tried to ease tensions a little bit after.

“There’s no blame to go around,” Beane said. “Nothing happened, there’s no one thing that, ‘this happened and the dam broke.’”

But the GM also admitted: “I don’t think (being benched) sat well with him.”

Clearly not, since Spain gave his candid response from the Super Bowl.

In such comments, tone makes a difference. For those wondering, here’s what Spain said from the Super Bowl via Spectrum News:

The NFL’s All-Underrated offense in the first half of the 2021 season

From Matt Ryan to Deebo Samuel to Rodney Hudson, here are the NFL’s most underrated offensive players in the first half of the 2021 season.

In every season, there are those players who, for whatever reason, do not receive the recognition their talents deserve. Perhaps they’re languishing on bad teams, or they’re doing their best in less than optimal situations, or it’s just that their positions aren’t the ones that get noticed.

But these players — Touchdown Wire’s Secret Superstars of the first half of the 2021 NFL season — have all earned notice as among the best at what they do, and it’s our job to help bridge the talent/recognition gap.

Here are most underrated offensive players in the first half of the 2021 season.

Bengals bring back free-agent OL Quinton Spain

The Cincinnati Bengals brought back offensive guard Quinton Spain on a one-year deal on Tuesday.

Spain signed with the team last October after being a shocking cut in Buffalo despite an extension and ended up appearing in nine games. He graded out over the entire season at a 56.7 at PFF, allowing one sack over 720 snaps.

As of right now, Spain chalks in as the veteran starter at left guard but doesn’t prohibit the team from making further moves along the offensive line.

The move comes on the heels of the Bengals upgrading the offensive line with free agent Riley Reiff. The team didn’t take long to announce the release of Bobby Hart after that signing went official.

Otherwise, the Bengals did reportedly put in an offer on free-agent wideout Kenny Golladay. Despite speculation, another report said the Bengals hadn’t reached out to free-agent guard Trai Turner.

Report card: Grading every Bills position after third quarter of season

Buffalo Bills report card following the third quarter of the 2020 NFL season.

We’re rounding the final turn of the Buffalo Bills’ 2020 regular season. At 9-3, the Bills are still in the pole position in terms of grabbing a playoff berth from the AFC East.

However, the work is far from done. While the team itself will be looking forward to their final four games, let’s take a look back before we do the same.

Here’s Bills Wire’s third-quarter report card heading into the final stretch:

Bengals sign free-agent OL Quinton Spain

The Cincinnati Bengals made a move along the offensive line.

The Cincinnati Bengals have signed free agent guard Quinton Spain to the team’s practice squad.

Just 29 years old, Spain got released by the Buffalo Bills despite signing an extension this past offseason. He’s a starter-caliber guard who can plug-and-play at left guard, displacing the struggling Mike Jordan.

Word initially broke about a visit from Spain before the team’s Week 7 game against the Cleveland Browns. Before kickoff, Spain was a nice idea to upgrade struggling guard spots but not a guarantee.

That outlook changed dramatically when three Bengals starting linemen — Jonah Williams, Trey Hopkins and Bobby Hart — left the game with injuries and didn’t return.

Depending on how the injury outlook stands with one game standing between the team and a bye, Spain could be the first of a few moves for the Bengals in front of rookie Joe Burrow.

Bengals expected to sign former Bills OL Quinton Spain

Former Buffalo Bills OL Quinton Spain to sign with Cincinnati Bengals.

[jwplayer uiO8bQ7W-ThvAeFxT]

After being released by the Buffalo Bills last week, offensive lineman Quinton Spain is reportedly going to sign with the first team he had a free-agent visit with. That team is the Cincinnati Bengals.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Bengals are expected to sign Spain, which could come about on Friday, per Bengals Wire. That’s because before doing so, Spain has to pass the NFL’s COVID-19 safety protocols.

While Cincy isn’t in a playoff race currently at 1-5-1 overall, the Bengals do have huge concerns on their offensive line. Rookie quarterback Joe Burrow has flashed in his first season, but he’s been beaten up, too.

Spain would compete with linemen Mike Jordan, Billy Price and Alex Redmond for playing time. Along with those current Bengals, Cincy also landed another offensive lineman this week, BJ Finney, as well. He joins the Bengals in the other direction of the trade that sent defensive end Carlos Dunlap to the Seahawks.

After the 29-year-old was released by Buffalo last week, Bills Wire named the Bengals as one of his potential top-landing spots.

Bengals sound poised to sign Quinton Spain despite adding B.J. Finney

The Cincinnati Bengals don’t sound done adding to the offensive line.

[jwplayer Pj21K9Ou-ThvAeFxT]

It sure doesn’t sound like the Cincinnati Bengals are going to get passive when it comes to the offensive line after adding B.J. Finney.

Finney comes over via the Carlos Dunlap trade with the Seattle Seahawks — but that won’t stop the team from signing free agent Quinton Spain.

According to The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr., the situation with Spain is a simple matter of logistics. He’s in town and going through the COVID-19 protocols, but that extensive onboarding process is why outsiders haven’t heard much about the situation.

Once Spain is actually in the building, it sounds like a matter of time before the team makes the signing official. Given the current timeline, look for that to happen Friday.

While Finney has experience at all three interior offensive line spots, both guard spots have been downright miserable for the Bengals this season. That, plus center Trey Hopkins sitting in concussion protocol, means the team still needs as much help as it can get in these areas.

Finney and Spain aren’t necessarily long-term solutions to big problems for the Bengals, but it’s nice to see the organization remain very aggressive in getting Joe Burrow some improved protection.

Report: Former Bills OL Quinton Spain to visit Bengals

Former Bills Bills OL Quinton Spain to have free-agent visit with Bengals.

After being released by the Buffalo Bills last week, offensive lineman Quinton Spain is reportedly going to make his first free-agent visit this upcoming week.

The Bengals will host Spain on a visit, Bengals Wire reports.
