Broncos officially announce 17-player practice squad for 2024

The Broncos officially re-signed LB Levelle Bailey Monday and the 17-player practice squad is now full. Here’s the complete list of players.

The Denver Broncos waived rookie linebacker Levelle Bailey last week to make room for special teams linebacker Kristian Welch on the 53-man roster. One day later, Bailey cleared waivers and news broke that he would return to the team on their practice squad.

Denver officially announced Bailey’s signing on Monday and the 17-player practice squad is now set for the 2024 NFL season.

The NFL has a standard practice squad size limit of 16 players, but there’s an exception that allows an extra international player to not count against the limit. For the Broncos, Australian tight end Thomas Yassmin is an exception, giving Denver a 17-player practice squad.

So here’s the full list of 17 players on the squad for the 2024 season.

Broncos roster series: No. 36, DB Quinton Newsome

Broncos rookie defensive back Quinton Newsome will aim to impress in a crowded secondary this summer.

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at rookie defensive back Quinton Newsome, No. 36.

During the offseason, teammates can share jersey numbers if they play on opposite sides of the ball. This summer, Newsome will share No. 36 with running back Tyler Badie.

Before the Broncos: Newsome (6-1, 185 pounds) played five years of college football at Nebraska, earning honorable mention All-Big Ten honors in 2023 and 2022. In his final three seasons with the Cornhuskers, Newsome totaled 138 tackles, 17 pass breakups, three sacks and one interception. A converted safety, Newsome can play as a cornerback or nickelback.

Broncos tenure: Denver signed Newsome as a college free agent in May. He’s set to compete for a spot on the roster during training camp and preseason this summer.

Chances to make the 53-man roster: Long shot. The Broncos have more experienced options at cornerback and safety, so Newsome will likely be competing for a spot on the practice squad as a rookie.

Check out these highlights of new Broncos CB Quinton Newsome

Broncos undrafted cornerback Quinton Newsome will aim to turn heads this summer.

After the 2024 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos signed undrafted free agent cornerback Quinton Newsome.

Newsome (6-2, 185 pounds) comes to the Broncos as an established college player from the University of Nebraska, having played in 53 games, starting 35 of them from 2019-2023.

In his career with the Cornhuskers, Newsome totaled 148 tackles (94 solo, 55 assisted), seven tackles for loss, three sacks, 18 passes defensed and one interception. His lone interception came during the 2023 season, against Illinois.

Newsome’s most productive season came in 2022 when he had a career-high in tackles for loss (four), sacks (two), passes defensed (10), forced fumbles (one) and games played (12). Check out his highlights below:

While Newsome may not be an instant starter, there is precedent for an undrafted free agent to start at cornerback and make a big impact on Denver’s defense. The most recent example is Broncos starting nickel cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian. McMillian started only one game in 2022, and that was enough for Denver coaches to take notice. McMillian is now a key member of the Broncos’ secondary.

Newsome is a longshot to make the 53-man roster, but he’ll get a chance to impress this summer. If he doesn’t end up on the active roster, Newsome could be a candidate for the practice squad, which is where McMillian began his career three years ago.

A Nebraska defensive back has earned Big Ten Special Teams Player-of-the-Week. Quinton Newsome returned a blocked field goal in the Husker’s 31-14 victory over Purdue last Saturday.

Elijah Jeudy blocked the 4th quarter field goal attempt, and the senior cornerback, Newsome, then caught the deflection and ran it back 68 yards for the first touchdown of his Husker career. Head coach Matt Rhule said he was proud of the role the senior plays on special teams.

“Very fired up for Quinton. I should have said that in my opening remarks. They told me that earlier. If he doesn’t adjust on that fumble, the game might be different in that punt return. The fact that you have a senior who’s out there playing on the punt return team, that speaks a lot to him. He’s an NFL player and he’s out there playing on the punt return team. We can make you do that but we’re not making him do that.”

Newsome is the first Cornhuskers to win a Big Ten weekly honor since Malcolm Hartzog won Freshman of the Week in October of 2022.

“I was playing the super scorer on that play. I saw the ball pop up and I caught it. I saw the grass and (Tommi) Hill running with me. This is six right here. We’re going to the end zone. Taking the practice reps and bringing it to the game. You never know when you’re going to block a field goal in the game. That was a big moment in the game.”

Following the game, Husker head coach Matt Rhule stated that the coaching staff has been all over the team about the need for big plays on special teams.

Offensive/Defensive Players of the Week from Nebraska’s loss to Illinois

Here are the Offensive/Defensive Players of the Week from Nebraska’s loss to Illinois

On Saturday, the Nebraska Cornhuskers suffered a 9-26 loss to the Illinois Fighting Illini.

It was a competitive game in the first half. Midway through the second quarter, the Cornhuskers actually held a 9-6 lead. Unfortunately, quarterback Casey Thompson left the game late in the second quarter with an injury. In Thompson’s absence, Nebraska’s offense failed to put any additional points on the board. Backup quarterback Chubba Purdy completed only three passes for 15 yards.

It was an ugly loss. Nevertheless, a couple of players managed to have standout performances. Without further ado, let’s take a look at Nebraska’s Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week.
