9 former Patriots players who are still free agents

Here are the last remaining former Patriots players still listed as free agents.

After one week of free agency, the New England Patriots have managed to re-sign the vast majority of their pending free agents since the turn of the new league year.

They’ve also lost some key players as well, including wideout Jakobi Meyers and running back Damien Harris.

But not everyone has been picked up by another team yet. There are still some considerably noteworthy names swimming in the massive pool of free agency. For New England, that number has dwindled all the way down to 10 players left on the list.

Here are the former Patriots players still waiting to be signed in free agency.

Three players waived by Patriots, including preseason standout

Patriots have waived three players, including a preseason standout.

The New England Patriots announced on Wednesday they are waiving wide receiver Kristian Wilkerson, kicker Quinn Nordin and defensive back Tae Hayes.

Wilkerson being cut is the bigger news considering he was a standout for the team during training camp. Even in the Patriots’ preseason opener against the New York Giants, he led the offense with eight receptions for 99 yards.

His season ended before it even started when he was the recipient of a dirty hit at a joint training camp practice. The hit resulted in a massive brawl breaking out between the Patriots and Panthers on the field.

One has to wonder if New England would consider giving Wilkerson another look down the road, especially if they lose Jakobi Meyers and Nelson Agholor in free agency.

Meanwhile, Tae Hayes appeared in two games for the Patriots and came away with three tackles, while Nordin was on the reserve/non-football injury list in 2022.

Patriots sign kicker Tristan Vizcaino, release kicker Quinn Nordin

The New England Patriots added depth to the kicking position on Friday.

The New England Patriots signed kicker Tristan Vizcaino, and released kicker Quinn Nordin on Friday afternoon.

Vizcaino has bounced around the league over the past couple of seasons. He played six games for the Chargers last season, going nine-of-10 on field goals and 17-of-22 on extra points. He played in one game with the San Francisco 49ers in 2020, prior to his time with Los Angeles.

Nordin was signed by the Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2021. He did not play any regular-season games for the Patriots last year, as Nick Folk was the starting kicker last season. The Patriots were able to re-sign Folk this offseason, doing so back in March.

New England has found stability at the starting kicker position, and now they are looking for ways to tighten up their depth.

6 kickers Jets can target after Alex Kessman’s struggles vs. Eagles

Alex Kessman is likely out as the Jets’ kicker after his disastrous performance against the Eagles. Here are some options to replace him:

Alex Kessman’s tenure with the Jets is likely coming to an end before Gang Green takes the field against the Saints in Week 14.

New York cut Matt Ammendola prior to its matchup with the Eagles, giving Kessman the chance to take over as its kicker. The Pittsburgh product bombed his audition, missing two extra points in the first quarter of New York’s blowout loss in Week 13. Robert Saleh never called Kessman’s number again, opting to attempt two-point and fourth-down conversions instead of risking another miss.

“We’ll get someone else in the building and we’ll keep going until something works,” Saleh said postgame.

Kessman said that he won’t “let two kicks define me,” but it wouldn’t be surprising if the Jets let his pair of PAT attempts define — and end — his time in New York. With that in mind, here are six available kickers the Jets could bring in.

Report: Quinn Nordin named starting kicker for 2021 season

Quinn Nordin has been named the starting kicker for the New England Patriots.

The New England Patriots have made rookie kicker Quinn Nordin the starter for the 2021 season. Nordin takes the job over from Nick Folk, who has held the position for the last two seasons.

Nordin went six-of-eight on field goals throughout the course of the preseason. He went four-of-eight on extra points. With Folk missing much of the preseason due to injuries, Nordin was able to have an opportunity to showcase his skills.

Folk was named the starting kicker for the 2020 season. He went 26 of 28 on field goals and 30 of 33 on extra points. He had two game-winning field goals last season. Both of them came in the month of November, against the New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals.

With the Patriots having a busy Tuesday, the kicker position battle has been put to rest.

12 takeaways from the Patriots’ dominant rout of Eagles in preseason

The Patriots got tremendous play from their QBs, RBs, Jakobi Meyers and Matthew Judon.

The New England Patriots dominated the Philadelphia Eagles in a 35-0 win in the second week of the preseason on Thursday night. With the Eagles playing without quarterback Jalen Hurts and most of the top defensive unit, Philly was outmatched by New England, which put all of its healthy starters on the field for a few series.

That imbalance of talent is why the preseason is sometimes unhelpful or flawed for evaluation. As good as the Patriots looked, they were beating up on backups. That said, coach Bill Belichick must be happy with a blowout and a shutout. New England put together a truly complete performance, with standout performances at just about every position.

Here are our 12 takeaways.

How Bill Belichick feels following Quinn Nordin’s promising performance

Bill Belichick still hasn’t seen enough from the rookie kicker.

Quinn Nordin was one of the New England Patriots’ top performers in the 22-13 season-opening win against the Washington Football Team.

The undrafted rookie kicker hit 3 of 3 field goals, with one from 50 yards out. He gained the opportunity after Nick Folk missed five straight days in practice with injury — leading to Nordin making noise with 14 consecutive field goals. If it wasn’t for the opportunity stemming from Folk’s absence, Nordin would still likely be on the search for jobs on LinkedIn.

Nordin struggled his senior year at Michigan after hitting only 2 of 5 field goals. But, he proved to have a strong leg with 14 field goals made from 40-plus yards and four from 50-plus — which were both school records.

Bill Belichick discussed Nordin’s performance following the game and was focused on the consistency going forward.

“Yeah, I mean, we’ll take a look at it. Hit a couple good ones, missed an extra point,” Belichick said, transcribed by WEEI. “It’s all about consistency. Quinn has gotten better. He’s worked hard. But again, it’s really about consistency at that position. We’re getting there. We’ll see what kind of progress he continues to make.”

The Patriots have a few weeks until the season opener, but Nordin appears to be at the top of the list for the job with Folk out.

Patriots kicker Quinn Nordin was looking for jobs on LinkedIn this spring

Patriots kicker Quinn Nordin was looking for jobs on LinkedIn before the Patriots came calling.

Over four seasons with the Michigan Wolverines, kicker Quinn Nordin made 119 of 124 extra points, and 42 of 58 field goals, totaling 245 points. That left him with little hope for the NFL until the Patriots signed him in May, and gave him an opportunity to earn the starting job.

Before that, Nordin was planning for a future without football, going so far as to create a profile on LinkedIn. In that profile, Nordin wrote, “Graduate Student at The University of Michigan pursuing my MSW. I want to better understand people. My experience as a student athlete, has prepared me to take on long hour weeks and any task with dedication and diligence because those are the values Michigan Football program promotes. I am no stranger to hard work and I am willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.”

It was one of several options Nordin was considering.

“I was on LinkedIn looking at jobs,” he said Monday. “I was thinking about maybe going into the military. The Patriots were my only call, so I’m here. I’m doing the best I can, and that’s it.

“I was literally on LinkedIn typing in, like, ‘What to do after college.’”

It didn’t help that Nordin played in just four games last season, making two of five field goal attempts. He did lead the Big Ten with 19 made field goals in 2017 — perhaps that’s what had Bill Belichick and his staff with their eyes out.

“I was sitting in a recliner all day on my laptop, calling people, looking for a job,” Nordin said, per MLive.com. “I was on a walk with my mom, and my agent called me and told me that [the Patriots] were going to get [me] a contract. And I said I’m not going to believe anything until there’s something at my house. Something came to the house, and I’m extremely grateful. But I couldn’t even believe it, because when you want something to happen and it doesn’t happen and you wait and you wait and you wait, you’re just that much more grateful when the opportunity does come.”

So far, Belichick has been impressed, and as Nordin made field goals of 35. 40. and 50 yards in the preseason opener against Washington, that will only help his case.

“Quinn’s improved,” Belichick said Monday. “He’s still got a long way to go, but he’s improved. It’s a good opportunity for him to kick inside. Of course, it’s ideal conditions. Can’t get it really much better than that. No wind, turf. We’ll keep challenging him in different situations and see how he responds just like everybody else. No rush.”

The call from Foxboro gave Nordin a bit of a quandary, though — life in the NFL, or power-washing his dad’s deck?

“Literally, I think it was two days after, my dad needed the deck power-washed,” Nordin said. “All my buddies had signed with teams, and I was like, you know what, I could rent this power washer and I could power-wash decks in the neighborhood. But I wanted to give [the NFL] a shot. This is every kid’s, person’s dream to get a chance to play for the New England Patriots.”

The deck can wait. The NFL is not forever. Veteran kicker Nick Folk has been absent from the team’s first practices, so now is Nordin’s time to shine.

Patriots sign UDFA kicker Quinn Nordin

New England added a third kicker to their competition.

The New England Patriots have signed former Michigan Wolverines kicker Quinn Nordin as an undrafted rookie free agent. Nordin took to Twitter to make the announcement on Wednesday.

Nordin will join Patriots kickers Nick Folk and Roberto Aguayo in a competition for the starting job.

Nordin spent five years at Michigan, and went 42 of his 58 on field-goal attempts over four seasons (72.4 percent). His play was erratic enough that he didn’t get selected in the 2021 NFL draft, in which one kicker, Florida’s Evan McPherson, went. During the 2020 season, Nordin hit 2 of 5 field goals attempts with three consecutive misses in the Wolverine’s triple-overtime win over Rutgers.

He’ll have a tough time beating out Folk, the starter for the last two seasons.

5 Michigan football starters appear to be out vs. Penn State, some return

While some injured players return, it appears Michigan football will be without multiple players against Penn State.

[jwplayer muvLZIyi-XNcErKyb]

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — There were a lot of questions about who would or wouldn’t take the field for Michigan football in Big Ten Week 6 against Penn State on Saturday.

Two Wolverines left last week’s contest with injury in Brad Hawkins and Cam McGrone, with the latter having been carted off and needing an MRI in the game’s aftermath, per head coach Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh was mum in his weekly press conference about either’s availability after having sustained ailments at Rutgers.

However, on the other side of the ball for Michigan, not only were the maize and blue without offensive tackles Jalen Mayfield and Ryan Hayes for the third-straight week, but center Andrew Vastardis also missed the game with injury. OL coach Ed Warinner noted that the tackles had returned to practice this week, so there’s some potential positive news on that front entering Saturday’s game.

So who at least dressed for the game? At the stadium, we saw DE Kwity Paye, LT Ryan Hayes and S Brad Hawkins in uniform during pregame warmups. However, though unconfirmed by a team spokesman, WR Giles Jackson, K Quinn Nordin, LB Cam McGrone, C Andrew Vastardis and RT Jalen Mayfield are out due to injury.

Michigan football and Penn State are set to kick off at noon EST.

Update: The above has been confirmed by a team spokesperson.
