Cowboys release Tristan Vizcaino; sticking with Brandon Aubrey for now

From @ToddBrock24f7: HC Mike McCarthy says he is excited for the opportunity for Brandon Aubrey to get more reps at kicker, but “we’re always open” to change.

The Cowboys have decided they’ve seen enough from Tristan Vizcaino.

The 27-year-old kicker is being released by the team following a lackluster showing at the team’s training camp. Vizcaino connected on just 22 of his 35 attempts during the Cowboys’ padded practices in Oxnard.

He had a particularly rough day on Saturday, hitting just four of eight kicks, but Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy says Vizcaino’s release was not a knee-jerk reaction to one poor outing.

“It’s never just a one-day deal,” he told reporters prior to practice Monday.

The roster move leaves Brandon Aubrey as the only kicker on the roster, though the former USFL star still has plenty of room for improvement. He’s fared only slightly better thus far in camp, going 26-of-35 on his field goal tries, a make percentage that would have ranked him 32nd in the league last year.

McCarthy says he’s looking forward to seeing Aubrey take a bigger step toward possibly winning the starting job, but he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of bringing in another kicker before Week 1.

“We felt that it was an opportunity to give Brandon a majority of the reps,” McCarthy said. “But as far as another kicker competition, we’re always open to that.”

The coach did add, though, “I’m excited about our young guy.”

Aubrey, who played collegiate soccer at Notre Dame and spent the past two championship seasons with the Birmingham Stallions, is expected to get his first NFL experience when the Cowboys host Jacksonville for a preseason game on Saturday.

Cowboys re-sign kicker Tristan Vizcaino to active roster

Vizcaino was brought in for some practice work after Brett Maher missed 4 PATs in the wild-card game; now he’ll look to make the ’23 roster. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The Cowboys took out an insurance policy of sorts back in January when they signed kicker Tristan Vizcaino to the practice squad after Brett Maher managed to miss an NFL-record four PAT attempts in the wild-card round of the postseason.

They’re doing the same as free agency is about to begin.

The team announced Wednesday that Vizcaino has been signed to the active roster, solidifying the front office’s earlier position that they were ready to go “back to the drawing board” at kicker.

Maher kept his job after the debacle in Tampa, outperforming Vizcaino during the subsequent week at practice. Maher made two field goal attempts against San Francisco in the divisional round, but had his lone PAT try blocked. (Most observers feel the kick would have missed, given the ball’s initial trajectory.)

Maher is now set to become a free agent, and it has been assumed that the Cowboys would move on.

Vizcaino first entered the league in 2019 and has bounced around with eight different teams since then, including an early short stint in Dallas. He originally signed a reserve/futures contract and lasted four months during the 2020 offseason.

The 26-year-old out of the University of Washington has made 11 career field goals on 12 total attempts, and 15 of 20 extra-point tries over four NFL seasons.

Cowboys add kicker to practice squad as insurance for Brett Maher

The plan is reportedly for Dallas to start Brett Maher on Sunday but have Tristan Vizcaino as backup in case Maher’s struggles continue. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The Cowboys proclaimed their confidence in Brett Maher after his disastrous wild-card performance Monday night, telling nearly everyone who asked that they would stick with their kicker, despite him missing an NFL-record four PAT attempts versus Tampa Bay.

But they’ve decided that a little insurance wouldn’t be a bad thing.

The team will sign Tristan Vizcaino to the practice squad, as reported by NFL insider Tom Pelissero Wednesday afternoon. The team appears ready to leave Maher in place as Sunday’s starter in San Francisco, but will have a backup option in case efforts to get the veteran specialist back on track are derailed.

Vizcaino first entered the league in 2019 and has bounced around with eight different teams since then, including a short stint in Dallas. He signed a reserve/futures contract and lasted four months during the 2020 offseason.

Most of his experience has been on the practice squads of those clubs; the University of Washington product has made 11 career field goals on 12 total attempts, and 15 of 20 extra-point tries.

Vizcaino’s most recent action came in Week 10 of this season, when he was a perfect 3-for-3 on PATs and 2-for-2 on field goals for Arizona in a win over the Seahawks.

The 26-year-old actually played briefly for the 49ers at the tail end of the 2020 season and kicked in a 49ers home game, but it was not outdoors at Levi’s Stadium, where this Sunday’s divisional matchup will take place. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the 49ers based several of their home games that year in Glendale, Ariz.; Vizcaino booted his first three NFL field goals (and two PATs) at the Cardinals’ State Farm Stadium, despite San Francisco being the designated home team.

List of Patriots practice squad players not signed to future contracts

These players were not signed to future contracts by the Patriots.

The New England Patriots are making the necessary preparations for a long offseason ahead, including the planning of their 2023 practice squad.

After the team signed 11 players to future contracts last week, that leaves at least five more pending free agents. Keep in mind, some of the names on the list are players that have been involved in at least some way with the Patriots organization off and on.

So there’s a chance they could be back at some point.

Granted, the Patriots are hopeful to have an overall healthier season to avoid leaning too heavily on their practice squad for help, which was often the case throughout the 2022 season.

But then again, it’s always a good thing to have options, and one of the players not signed to a future deal could prove to be an option to either the Patriots or another team down the road.

Patriots make four late roster moves ahead of Bengals game

The Patriots made four late roster moves on Friday.

The New England Patriots were busy on the eve of their Week 16 showdown with the visiting Cincinnati Bengals.

After revealing long snapper Joe Cardona was done for the season with a torn tendon in his foot, the team officially placed the veteran specialist on injured reserve on Friday.

In a corresponding move, the Patriots announced the signing of backup long snapper Tucker Addington from the practice squad to the main roster to serve as Cardona’s replacement. Along with resetting the long snapper position, kicker Tristan Vizcaino and tight end Scotty Washington were both elevated to the active roster.

Washington could be an interesting fit offensively with the team already playing without receiver DeVante Parker. Jakobi Meyers and rookie Tyquan Thornton are also questionable for the game.

So Washington gives quarterback Mac Jones another possible receiving target if the Patriots are shorthanded in this matchup. Meanwhile, Vizcaino will likely assume kick-off duties for the team.

There could be plenty more shuffling for the Patriots when the final injury report comes out before game time.

Patriots elevate two players for Thursday’s gameday roster

The Patriots elevate two players ahead of showdown with the Bills.

The New England Patriots are adding another kicker to the active roster and bolstering the offensive line depth ahead of Thursday’s clash with the visiting Buffalo Bills.

Per an official team report, backup kicker Tristan Vizcaino and offensive guard Bill Murray have been elevated to the gameday roster.

Murray being chosen makes sense considering all of the uncertainty right now on the Patriots’ offensive line. Veteran tackle Isaiah Wynn has already been ruled out for the game with a foot injury, while David Andrews, Trent Brown and Yodny Cajuste are listed as questionable. If multiple players are out, it could set the stage for musical chairs along the offensive front.

Meanwhile, Vizcaino could be charged with handling kick-off duties, while Nick Folk handles the field goal responsibilities. Kicking could be a problem in the game with high winds expected to be a factor early.

The Patriots hope to avoid a third straight loss in their head-to-head meetings with the Bills, and both Murray and Vizcaino could potentially have a role in helping them do so.

Patriots make two roster moves, following division win over Jets

The Patriots make two roster moves after knocking off the Jets.

Fresh off a big win over the New York Jets, the New England Patriots were back in the office on Monday making moves on the personnel side of things. The team confirmed two transactions, including the signing of kicker Tristan Vizcaino to the practice squad and release of running back J.J. Taylor.

Damien Harris’ return to the offensive backfield meant Taylor was likely going to find himself on the outs as far as the 53-man roster is concerned. Granted, the team could always opt to stash him back on the practice squad, assuming he clears waivers.

Meanwhile, Vizcaino returns to the Patriots after being released earlier in the month. He signed briefly with the Arizona Cardinals and kicked a couple of field goals for them in their Week 10 win over the Los Angeles Rams.

Taylor being released leaves a vacancy on the Patriots’ roster heading into Thursday’s Thanksgiving night showdown with the Minnesota Vikings. So another move will likely be coming soon.

Patriots place DB Cody Davis on IR, release K Tristan Vizcaino

Cody Davis lands on IR, Tristan Vizcaino released by Patriots

The New England Patriots ended Tuesday afternoon by announcing two roster moves. Cody Davis, the veteran special teams player, has been placed on injured reserve, and kicker Tristan Vizcaino has been released from the practice squad.

Davis went down with an ugly knee injury in the Patriots’ win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Special teams ace Matthew Slater spoke about being “gutted” after seeing Davis go down with the injury.

“So when he was down, I’m not going to lie, I felt out of it the rest of the game,” Slater said. “You kind of felt like you were in the Twilight Zone a little bit. I hate to see that. I’m obviously praying for him, and I’m certainly gutted for Cody and his injury.”

Davis joined the Patriots in 2020 and carved out a steady role for himself on the team. People typically undervalue special teams players, but there’s no question Davis was missed on the field against the Browns.

Davis going on IR and Vizcaino being released opens up two roster spots for the Patriots on both the active roster and the practice squad.

Patriots sign kicker Tristan Vizcaino to practice squad

New England signed kicker Tristan Vizcaino to the practice squad on Wednesday.

The New England Patriots signed kicker Tristan Vizcaino to the practice squad on Wednesday, according to Vizcaino’s agency.

This is yet another piece of news in what has been a busy day for the Patriots. The kicker does have some experience with the team, as he kicked for them during training camp. He was released before roster cutdowns.

Vizcaino has had success in the NFL over the past couple of years. He made three attempts for the San Francisco 49ers in 2020. He didn’t leave the state of California, as he spent the 2021 season with the Los Angeles Chargers. He converted six-of-seven field goals during that time.

This busy day of roster moves comes four days before the Patriots are set to take on the Baltimore Ravens. Kickoff time is set for 1:00 p.m. ET.

Chiefs to work out former Chargers K Tristan Vizcaino on Monday

The #Chiefs are bringing in a former #Chargers kicker for a tryout on Monday per report.

The Kansas City Chiefs are wasting no time bringing in kickers for tryouts with a short week to prepare for the Los Angeles Chargers.

Harrison Butker suffered an ankle injury during the team’s Week 1 game against the Arizona Cardinals. He was temporarily replaced by S Justin Reid before returning to finish the game, but he was clearly limited by his ankle. It was heavily taped up and he only took one step when kicking a 54-yard field goal and extra points. It would make sense to rest Butker on the short week and give him a chance to be closer to 100% for Week 3.

According to Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson the Chiefs will host veteran kicker Tristan Vizcaino for a workout on Monday.

Vizcaino has spent time with several NFL teams, including the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Chargers. He has seven games played between those two teams, including six with the Chargers last season. During that span, he’s 9-for-10 on field goal attempts with a 47-yard long field goal. He’s also 12-of-17 on extra points and has 32 kickoffs with 14 career touchbacks.

Perhaps there is an element of a revenge game for Vizcaino here? He’d be going against the team that replaced him last season.

Expect the Chiefs to bring in some other kickers for tryouts on Monday as well. It’s worth noting that Elliott Fry, who the team signed last season when Butker caught COVID-19, is a free agent. He went 3-for-4 on field goals, 3-for-4 on extra points and had 8 kickoffs with five touchbacks in the Chiefs’ Week 16 game against the Steelers last year.
