BREAKING: Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers will start against TCU

It looks like Quinn Ewers will lead Texas on Saturday.

On Thursday, we learned that Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers will start on Saturday. Without question, it is the best news of the week for the team.

Ewers returns two weeks after spraining his AC joint in his throwing shoulder. How he made the faster than expected recovery is unclear, but his return is a huge boost to the offense if he is truly ready to play.

We have written extensively on Ewers’ impact on this team. In his absence, careless decision making at quarterback nearly squandered a 20-point second half lead last week.

What Ewers brings goes beyond the stat sheet, but one area gives the Longhorns a particularly strong chance to win consistently. The second year starter often does not turn the ball over. In two games, backup Maalik Murphy equaled Ewers’ interception total on the season (3). Murphy could have had several more turnovers in that span.

Ewers brings more in the way of efficiency as well. On the season, he has completed 70.9% of his passes with a QBR of 77.7.

In contrast, Murphy has completed 55.7% of passing attempts with a QBR of 45.6. The second year backup gave Texas enough to win the last two games, but still appeared to be a work in progress. The Longhorns now need their starter.

Ewers will look to keep Texas in the win column on Saturday against the TCU Horned Frogs at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.

Five trends that Texas will need to change in the last four games

Texas will hope to progress in these areas moving forward.

Texas enters the final stretch of games starting with Kansas State next week. For the Longhorns to climb back into the Big 12 race, multiple trends will need to change.

Football starts and ends with quarterback play, and Texas did not get enough from the position last week. Quinn Ewers was noticeably off target. Whether that continues is still to be seen. Texas quarterbacks will have to improve at the position for the Longhorns to win any of their remaining games.

The defense has a few issues to resolve after allowing 41 points and over 500 yards to the Oklahoma State Cowboys last week. Many of their struggles came from poor assignment discipline and execution.

Ultimately the Longhorns will need to be able to make stops defensively and get first downs offensively in the second half to keep a lead.

Here are a few trends that Texas will need to change.

Texas Football: What Steve Sarkisian said in Monday’s press conference

The team’s goals are still intact.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian spoke with the media as he usually does on Monday. Following another gut-wrenching loss, Sarkisian faced the music and answered questions from Texas media.

Sarkisian owned up to the performance and issued an apology to the fanbase for allowing the loss to distract from singing The Eyes of Texas after the game. The second-year head coach was reflective and shared some of his introspection with the public.

Among the takeaways, Sarkisian noted that he should have ran the ball more. Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson experienced early success, but seemed to have stalled in the second half.

The Longhorns will have a significant opportunity for growth this week. Both the players and coaching staff stand to improve following the loss.

With the team’s goals still ahead of them, here’s what Steve Sarkisian had to say to the media.

Opinion: Flushing Oklahoma State loss is the solution to Texas’ ills

Texas doesn’t need an overhaul. They simply need to return to form.

Texas blew a double digit lead on Saturday. As you might expect, everyone has a plan to fix Steve Sarkisian’s offense and a diagnosis for Quinn Ewers’ career prospects. In reality, the game can be taken as one small snapshot of a long season.

College football has become a week-to-week sport. Each game is its own entity and shouldn’t be seen as anything more.

Through three weeks, Oklahoma was a playoff favorite. Over the next three, the Sooners lost two games by more than 30 points. The next week they beat a ranked Kansas team. The reality of the ever-changing season hits closer to home for Texas.

The Longhorns looked like an elite team against Alabama. Two weeks later they lost to Texas Tech. Continuing the roller coaster, Quinn Ewers helped lead Texas to its greatest win over Oklahoma in program history. Two weeks later, he could hardly complete a pass beyond the line of scrimmage. He will likely play at a different level every week.

With that in mind, let’s examine what Texas should focus on moving forward.

Dose of Hope: Texas HC Steve Sarkisian’s quotes indicate competency

It appears Steve Sarkisian’s staff is fixing the Longhorns’ most glaring issues.

Texas had very fixable issues in the aftermath of the Texas Tech loss. It appears Steve Sarkisian and his staff are working to eliminate those problems.

Texas Tech picked the Longhorns apart with short yardage passes last week, a recurring theme of the Sarkisian era. The theme was most visible on third and fourth down conversions, where Texas allowed Tech free passes to the first down marker. The problem is being addressed this week.

The Texas head coach discussed the extra work the team is putting in on money downs for both sides of the football, among other things. Sarkisian’s confidence also shined through in his media availability on Thursday. He appeared assured that the team is prepared for West Virginia this week.

Here are a few of his quotes from Thursday’s media availability.

WATCH: Texas QB Quinn Ewers jogging and throwing during warmups

Quinn Ewers might return before originally expected.

Quinn Ewers’ return might come faster than originally reported. The transfer quarterback was seen warming up on the field prior to the UTSA game on Saturday and did not look significantly encumbered by his injured shoulder.

The Longhorns’ gunslinger exhibited little to no discomfort as his arms swung during his pregame jog. Hope of an early return could inject life into the team after his strong performance against Alabama.

In addition, Ewers was seen effortlessly throwing the football in warmups. It appeared the Longhorns’ star was making an effort to minimize movement of his left shoulder to avoid pain. Albeit, it did not seem to affect his accuracy.

Now, attention shifts to how soon Ewers can return. Many speculated Ewers would return for the Oklahoma game at the earliest. Now it looks like he could return for West Virginia or perhaps even for Texas Tech.

Ultimately, only the doctors, coaching staff, Quinn Ewers and Ewers’ family know the severity of the injury. Even so, it looks like the Texas signal-caller is healing on schedule.
