Nevada vs Western Michigan Quick Lane Bowl Preview

Can Western Michigan close out with something strong after a disappointing season? Talent-wise, the Broncos had enough to win the MAC Championship.

The passing game was the MAC’s most efficient, it was great at controlling the clock and the tempo, and the defense was the best in the league allowing just 337 yards per game. So what was the problem?

There were way too many defensive meltdowns, penalties, and special teams gaffes to mess up several big offensive performances. And that’s what made the team so maddening – it was good enough to beat Pitt, and flaky enough to get blown out by Ball State.

Nevada, though, is an even bigger mystery after losing head coach Jay Norvell to Colorado State and with star QB Carson Strong opting out.

The three Mountain West losses were all by two points each, but now the offense that was so dominant throughout the season has to prove it can keep up.

Even without Strong, the passing game should still be dangerous, the Mountain West’s best pass rush will be disruptive, and the No. 1 team in the nation in turnover margin needs to force several mistakes in what will amount to a road game.

Where is Rutgers football most likely bowl destination?

Projections have Rutgers football heading to a bowl game.

Over the past month, there has been a growing consensus that Rutgers is heading for a bowl game. This Saturday, in their season finale, they can reach bowl eligibility with a win against Maryland.

A win would see Rutgers at 6-6 and put them in a position for a bowl game for the first time since 2014.

In their update over the weekend, ESPN FPI projects Rutgers to beat Maryland on Saturday. The flurry of bowl projections from the weekend also has Rutgers heading for a bowl game.

The most popular landing spot in four of the five projections is a familiar one for Rutgers. In fact, it was the location of their last bowl appearance under then head coach Kyle Flood. Just a small hint there.

A bowl game would be a huge accomplishment for Rutgers, now in their second season of a rebuild under head coach Greg Schiano. A bowl appearance would absolutely show momentum and help Rutgers on the recruiting trail heading into a very important offseason for the program.

With Rutgers win, bowl buzz is legitimately back on for the Scarlet Knights

Rutgers football is generating some bowl buzz once again.

With their first Big Ten win of the season on Saturday at Illinois, Rutgers football not only broke a four-game losing streak but also revived their bowl ambitions.

Rutgers is now 4-4 (1-4 Big Ten) and with a far more manageable backend to the schedule, the Scarlet Knights do have a legitimate shot at 6-6. Of their remaining four games, they are favored only in their season finale, a home game against Maryland. But the game at Indiana is looking more and more favorable for Rutgers, as ESPN FPI illustrated with their weekend update.

The Hoosiers are 2-6 on the year and have yet to win a Big Ten game.

Over the past three weeks, Rutgers has seen the bowl buzz gradually diminish with a tough start to conference play, but Saturday’s win has reinvigorated that talk. 247 Sports, in their latest projections, has the Scarlet Knights heading to the Quick Lane Bowl. Their opponent in Detroit would be Northern Illinois.

It would represent a big first step in the program’s rebuild. A bowl game in their second season of a total roster overhaul would be impressive.

This is the second season that Rutgers is under the direction of head coach Greg Schiano, who is back for his second stint with the program. The 4-4 record shows continued progress

The last time that Rutgers made a bowl game was in 2014 under then-head coach Kyle Flood, who took over the Scarlet Knights following Schiano’s departure for the NFL. The game? The Quick Lane Bowl.

Rutgers beat North Carolina 40-21 in the first edition of the game.

In a bowl projection released by USA Today’s Erick Smith,  he has Michigan State going to the Quick Lane Bowl in a matchup against the Buffalo Bulls.  The Quick Lane Bowl is between a bowl eligible team from the Big Ten and then a bowl eligible team from either the ACC or MAC.  It takes place at Ford Field in Detroit and used to be known as the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl.

Neither Michigan State or Buffalo have played yet this season, but MSU begins this season on Saturday at Noon against Rutgers.  Buffalo begins their season on November 3rd against Northern Illinois.  MSU and Buffalo both won their bowl appearances last year.

Eastern Michigan QB glass ejected on final drive for throwing pair of punches as Pitt wins Quick Lan

Throwing a pair of punches cost Eastern Michigan quarterback Mike Glass III the final snap of his college career. The heated moment might’ve also cost the team its first bowl win since 1987.

WATCH: Eastern Michigan QB Mike Glass III ejected after hitting official

Eastern Michigan QB Mike Glass III was ejected late in the Quick Lane Bowl for throwing punches, one that hit an official.

What looked like a thrilling end to the Quick Lane Bowl Thursday turned ugly when Eastern Michigan quarterback Mike Glass III was ejected from the game in the final seconds after throwing a couple punches, one clipping an official.

The incident happened moments after Pitt scored a touchdown to take a 34-30 lead.

There was an incomplete pass and Glass got into it with a Pitt player. He threw a punch at Cam Bright, then another one at Paris Ford, which hit the center judge who fell to the turf.

Glass was called for two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and ejected. Gipson was flagged for one unsportsmanlike. The penalties offset and Eastern Michigan’s next play went for an incompletion that doused their hopes for victory.

Quick Lane Bowl: Pittsburgh vs. Eastern Michigan odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s Quick Lane Bowl between the Pittsburgh Panthers and Eastern Michigan Eagles, with betting odds, picks, tips and bets.

The Pittsburgh Panthers (7-5) and Eastern Michigan Eagles (6-6) tangle in the Quick Lane Bowl Thursday. Kickoff at Ford Field in Detroit is set for 8 p.m. ET. We analyze the Pittsburgh-Eastern Michigan odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Pittsburgh vs. Eastern Michigan: Three things you need to know

1. Pittsburgh’s bowl history goes all the way back to the 1927 Rose Bowl, a game it lost 7-6 to Stanford. The Panthers also fell to Stanford 31-24 in the Sun Bowl last season. They’ll be more than happy to face anyone else. This will be Pitt’s first-ever bowl game vs. a Mid-American Conference foe.

2. Eastern Michigan makes the short jaunt from Ypsilanti to downtown Detroit for its fourth bowl game in school history. The Eagles are 1-2 all-time, falling last season to Georgia Southern in the Camellia Bowl in Birmingham. Their only bowl win was back in 1987 in the California Bowl vs. San Jose State, 30-27.

3. Pitt is 5-1 against the spread in the past six non-conference games, and 4-1 ATS in the past five vs. MAC opponents. EMU is 17-5 ATS in the past 22 non-conference games, and 17-8 ATS in the past 25 vs. winning teams.

Prediction

Pittsburgh 26, Eastern Michigan 17

Moneyline (ML)

Pitt (-435) had a so-so offense this season, but the defense was super stout. As such, the Panthers are expected to roll to a victory against the boys from Eastern Michigan (+325). Even so, the Panthers are just too expensive, when having to risk more than four times your return, especially since this game is right down Interstate 94 from Ypsi.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on Pitt to win outright would return a profit of just $2.30.

Against the Spread (ATS)

EASTERN MICHIGAN (+11.5, -110) likely isn’t going to win this game, but it is the Eagles’ national championship game. It’s primetime. It’s in their home state. And they have the passing attack to hang with most marginal Power 5 teams, for which Pittsburgh (-11.5, -110) certainly qualifies.

The Eagles were 29th in passing yards per game at 279.7, while posting 29.1 points per game to rank 64th in the land. EMU also has DB Brody Hoying, cousin of former Ohio State standouts Bobby Hoying and Ross Homan, patrolling the secondary. He led the team with four interceptions.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 49.5 (-115) is going to be a strong play for me in this one, also included perhaps as a part of a three-team teaser. The Under is 28-10-1 in Pittsburgh’s last 39 games overall, and 7-1 in the past eight as a favorite. The defense will dictate the pace of the game.
