Lakers to host Keon Ellis, others for pre-draft workout

Alabama senior Keon Ellis will be among the prospects to participate in a pre-draft workout with the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday, the team announced.

Ellis, who was named to the SEC All-Defensive team, averaged 12.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.9 steals and 1.8 assists on 43.9% shooting from the field in 33 games. He led the Crimson Tide in rebounding, steals, free-throw percentage (88.1) and 3-point percentage (36.6) last season.

The 6-foot-6 guard is widely projected to be an early-to-mid second-round pick this year after a strong campaign with the Crimson Tide. He has also worked out with Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics and Oklahoma City Thunder among other teams.

In addition to Ellis, the Lakers will also host Villanova guard Collin Gillespie, UConn guard Tyrese Martin, USC guard Drew Peterson, Texas A&M forward Quenton Jackson and Syracuse forward Cole Swider on Saturday.

The Lakers enter the pre-draft process with no picks in either round. The team dealt its first-round pick to the New Orleans Pelicans in the trade involving Anthony Davis and their second-round selection was sent to the Washington Wizards in a cap-clearing move.

Despite having no draft picks, the Lakers will still do their due diligence on those fringe prospects that could go undrafted. The team could eventually acquire picks to take a prospect or sign them outright in free agency after the draft.

The NBA draft will take place on June 23.

NBA G League Elite Camp 2022: Top performers from Day 2 in Chicago

Rookie Wire took a look at some of the best performances from the second and final day of the NBA G League Elite Camp.

The NBA G League Elite Camp resumed on Tuesday for its second and final day as draft-eligible prospects competed in front of scouts, coaches and front-office executives in Chicago, Illinois.

In total, 44 individuals were selected to participate in the event this year. The first day saw several players emerge above the rest with the likes of Marcus Sasser (Houston), Jalen Wilson (Kansas) and Darius Days (LSU) among those that stood out.

With the event wrapping up, other prospects showed out on the second day in an attempt to impress those talent-evaluators on hand. Rookie Wire took a look at some of the best performances from Tuesday.

Rough second half costs Notre Dame against Texas A&M

Are the Irish already in trouble early in the season?

If Notre Dame is going to live up to the preseason hype as an NCAA Tournament team, it will have to do better than it did the past few days. Despite being in front for much of its third and final Maui Invitational game against Texas A&M, it proved to be for naught. The Aggies came back for a 73-67 win, forcing the Irish to a 1-2 record in the tournament and a sixth-place finish.

The Irish (3-2) led almost the entire first half and held a 14-point lead early in the second. However, the Aggies (6-1) took control when their bench went on a scoring tear that the Irish couldn’t stop. Once the Aggies took their first lead since 1-0, they never gave it back. With the Irish piling up turnovers and being forced into tough offensive possessions, a win was not to be.

The Aggies received little scoring help from their starters, which makes this game’s outcome even more surprising. Quenton Jackson scored all but three of his 18 points in the second half and finished with an 8-of-11 shooting performance from the field. Hassan Diarra was just behind Jackson with 17 points as he was 7 of 11 from the free-throw line. Wade Taylor IV scored 14.

Dane Goodwin paced the Irish with 18 points and made all eight of his free throws. Prentiss Hubb scored 11 points but also committed a career-high eight turnovers. Paul Atkinson Jr. also scored 11, and Blake Wesley had 10 off the bench.
