Cardinals, VP Quentin Harris part ways

Harris leaves the organization a year after he was passed over for the general manager job.

The Arizona Cardinals and vice president of player personnel Quentin Harris have parted ways, according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones. He had been with the organization for 16 years in the scout department.

Harris, in his playing days, played for seasons for the Cardinals and then joined the scouting department as a pro scout in 2008. He moved to the assistant director of scouting in 2010 and then was made the director in 2013 when Steve Keim became general manager. In 2019, he became Keim’s right-hand man as the director of player personnel and then was made the vice president of player personnel in 2021.

He was even the interim general manager with Adrian Wilson when Keim went on a leave of absence before Keim left the team.

However, it always felt like this day was coming. Harris interviewed for the general manager job and was passed over for Monti Ossenfort. Ossenfort then hired Dave Sears to be his assistant general manager, who is above Harris in the organizational hierarchy.

Adrian Wilson, who was co-interim GM with Harris, left last year for a job with the Carolina Panthers, and Harris remained in the front office.

Harris was the last remaining of the highest executives with Steve Keim remaining including Wilson and Terry McDonough, who was fired and has since filed a lawsuit for wrongful termination, among other things.

We will see where Harris lands after this change.

With Harris out, this front office is now 100% Ossenfort’s.

Thus far, Tennessee has requested or plans to interview five candidates, with executives from the San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills among them.

Cardinals considering Adrian Wilson, Quentin Harris as co-GMs

Albert Breer reports that Steve Keim could be kept in the organization and that the team could have co-GMs.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”ZSegHROdhg-2468513-7498″]

The front office of the Arizona Cardinals has uncertainty moving forward in 2023. General manager Steve Keim is absent with a health-related issue. His return is not certain, especially after a 4-12 season entering the final game of the year.

Currently, the Cardinals have both Quentin Harris and Adrian Wilson, both with vice president titles, sharing the role of general manager.

If Keim is to be replaced as GM, the Cardinals might keep things that way.

According to SI.com’s Albert Breer, owner Michael Bidwill is “strongly considering” not promoting one over the other, opting to keep a co-GM setup.

Harris has been in the front office for years. Wilson has as well. Both are ready to be general managers somewhere.

The two are already working together, with Wilson focusing more on player evaluations and Harris doing more of the other things.

It keeps the Cardinals from potentially losing one to another team.

The key is whether they can work together well in a shared role.

Breer also suggests that if this is the move that is made, that Keim could be kept on in the organization in some sort of role.

Keim, of course, signed a five-year contract extension last offseason through 2027. Keeping him in the organization would make sense financially, whether it be via promotion or a lateral move in some other capacity.

Will Cardinals make another internal promotion to become GM?

The Cardinals have only hired one outsider to be GM since before 1980. All others were internal promotions.

The Arizona Cardinals face an offseason of uncertainty. General manager Steve Keim has taken a health-related leave of absence and his return is uncertain.

In the meantime, Adrian Wilson and Quentin Harris, both of whom hold vice president titles over player personnel and pro personnel, both are splitting the duties Keim left.

With Keim’s return in doubt, it leaves the Cardinals with the decision to replace him or not.

If they do, they appear set on doing something that has been on-brand for them as a franchise — promoting internally to fill a vacant GM job.

Since the Cardinals came to Arizona, only one general manager has been hired from outside.

The one outside GM hiring was Buddy Ryan, who was hired to be head coach and GM in 1993.

Keim worked his way up through the organization. Rod Graves, his predecessor, was in a VP role with the team for several years before he was named GM. Before him, it was Bob Ferguson, who was also promoted to GM after Ryan was fired.

Before Ryan, the GM was Larry Wilson, who was a Hall of Fame player, coached the team and then worked his way up in the front office to be GM.

Wilson and Harris have been with the team for years. Wilson has ascended rather quickly through the ranks over the last eight years, while Harris has been in the organization in player personnel and scouting for 15.

An internal hiring makes sense. They have two qualified candidates who are likely going to land a GM job somewhere in the near future.

On the other hand, with some of the organizational issues on and off the field, hiring someone from the outside might be what the team needs to clean up some of the internal culture that seems to be plaguing the organization.

Giants wrap up first round of general manager interviews

The New York Giants wrapped up the first leg of their general manager search having interviewed nine total candidates.

The New York Giants wrapped up their first round of interviews in their search for a new general manager this week.

The new GM will face the daunting task of rebuilding one of the league’s worst rosters with very little salary cap space to operate with.

Other challenges will include revamping the conditioning, training and medical departments as the team has been one of the most injured in the NFL the past decade.

Plus, he has to hire a new head coach and coaching staff, evaluate the scouting and personnel departments and make some really tough roster decisions.

Piece of cake, right?

Here is a quick list of the nine men they interviewed.

Giants also seek interview with Cardinals’ Quentin Harris for GM job

He has been with the Cardinals’ front office for 14 years.

The New York Giants seek a new general manager following the retirement of Dave Gettleman. They have begun the process of interviewing potential candidates. They have their eyes on two within the Arizona Cardinals’ front office.

It has already been reported that the Giants have requested to interview Adrian Wilson, the team’s vice president of pro personnel.

They also have requested to interview Quentin Harris, the team’s vice president of player personnel, according to CBS Sports’ Johnathan Jones.

Harris has been with the team in the front office for 14 years. He earned the VP title this year after previously being the director of player personnel and pro scouting director.

He has been general manager Steve Keim’s right-hand man for a while.

He has a hand in scouting, player development and contract negotiations.

With other GM openings, it might not be the only interview he gets.

Giants add four more names to general manager hunt

The New York Giants have requested interviews with four more general manager candidates, bringing their total to eight.

The list of candidates that the New York Giants would like to interview for their vacant general manager job continues to grow.

Two more names from the San Francisco 49ers are now on the list: assistant general manager Adam Peters and director of player personnel Ran Carthon.

Peters was promoted by 49ers general manager John Lynch back in February of last year. Before that, he spent the last four years as the vice president of player personnel. And prior to his time with San Francisco, Peters spent eight years with the Denver Broncos.

For Giants fans who recognize the name “Carthon,” they’re right — Carthon is the son of former Giants player Maurice Carthon, who won two Super Bowls with New York from 1985-1991.

The younger Carthon’s playing career only lasted three seasons in the NFL. Once his career was over, he became a pro scout for the Atlanta Falcons in 2008 and stayed there until 2011. Then he became the director of player personnel for the Los Angeles Rams from 2012 until 2016.

Carthon joined the 49ers in 2017 as their director of player personnel and has remained there since.

Meanwhile, the Giants also requested an interview with Arizona Cardinals vice president of pro personnel, Adrian Wilson.

Wilson brings that former NFL pedigree to the table, having spent 13 seasons in the NFL as a safety, mostly with the Cardinals. Since his retirement from the NFL, Wilson has spent his time with Arizona as an executive.

Wilson first started out as a regional scout from 2015-2018. He then became the director of pro scouting from 2019-2020 and spent last season as the Cardinals’ vice president of pro scouting.

Finally, the Giants have requested an interview with Cardinals vice president of player personnel Quentin Harris.

Harris, who had a six-year NFL career that included a brief stop with the Giants in 2006, started as a scout with the Cardinals in 2008. He also served as their director of pro scouting and director of player personnel before being promoted to his current role.

Cardinals give Adrian Wilson, others promotions in front office

Wilson and Harris, who work alongside GM Steve Keim, now have VP titles.

The Arizona Cardinals announced several promotions in their front office, including Ring of Honor member Adrian Wilson.

The following promotions were announced:

  • Quentin Harris from Director of Player Personnel to Vice President of Player Personnel
  • Adrian Wilson from Director of Pro Scouting to Vice President of Pro Personnel
  • Matt Caracciolo to Vice President of Football Operations and Facilities
  • Dru Grigson from Assistant Director of Player Personnel to Director of Player Personnel
  • Andrew Caskin from scouting assistant to Pro Scout

Harris and Wilson have worked closely with general manager Steve Keim and now have the VP title to show off if they were to interview with other teams.

Caracciolo was actually promoted to the job in May 2020. Wilson has worked his way up the organization quickly since first joining the front office in 2015 after retirement. Both Harris and Wilson should get opportunities to interview for general manager jobs in the years to come.
