Purdue at Michigan State: Three things to know

  1. Purdue visits East Lansing, Mich., on a two-game skid, most recently falling at then-No. 16 Illinois 66-58 Saturday – the game was a push as Purdue was an 8-point underdog. The Boilermakers led 42-39 with 13:50 to go before the Illini grabbed the lead for good one minute later at 43-42. A 39.3% field-goal percentage (22-for-56) did in Purdue, which received a team-high 14-points apiece from junior F Trevion Williams and freshman G Brandon Newman. Purdue was scheduled to host Nebraska Tuesday, but the game was postponed in a mutual agreement between the two programs due to health and safety concerns. Williams leads the Boilers with 14.1 points per game and 9.6 rebounds per game.
  2. Michigan State knocked off No. 14 Rutgers 68-45 as a 3-point home favorite Tuesday. Junior F Aaron Henry scored a game-high 20 points with 8 rebounds and 4 blocks as the Spartans won a second in a row after dropping three consecutive Big Ten games – a slide that saw the Spartans fall out of the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll. Henry leads Michigan State in points (14.0 PPG), assists (3.8 APG) and steals (1.6 SPG), while junior F Joey Hauser is the top rebounder (8.5 RPG).
  3. The Boilermakers stunned the Spartans 71-42 as 4-point home underdogs last season (Jan. 12). Purdue held Michigan State to 35.3% shooting (18-for-51), including just 2-for-16 behind the 3-point arc. It was Purdue’s second win in a row in the head-to-head series, which is tied 5-5 in the last 10 meetings.

The Spartans win this one, but I’ll PASS on the -200 ML price and focus on the spread below.

Against the spread (ATS)

MICHIGAN STATE -4.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. Both teams have been terrible against the spread. Purdue is 3-7-2 ATS and Michigan State is 3-8 ATS.

The Spartans, who are coming off impressive back-to-back victories, get the nod here, especially with the contest on their home floor.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS. The O/U of 142.5 is right where my projection is. Purdue averages 71.6 PPG and Michigan State is scoring at a 78.0 PPG clip. Defensively, the Boilermakers have a slight edge, yielding 67.3 PPG compared to the Spartans’ 72.8 PPG. Backing either the Over or the Under would just be a flip of a coin, which offers no advantage here.

  1. Purdue is coming off an 81-76 loss at No. 13 Rutgers as a 1.5-point underdog Tuesday. Junior F Trevion Williams led the Boilermakers with 21 points and a game-high 12 rebounds in the loss. Despite outscoring the Scarlet Knights 42-28 in the paint and winning the rebound battle 33-31, the Boilers suffered a second conference road loss in as many tries. Williams leads Purdue with 14.1 points per game and 9.7 rebounds per game, while junior G’s Eric Hunter Jr. and Sasha Stefanovic average 12.3 PPG and 11.5 PPG, respectively.
  2. Illinois, which also lost at Rutgers this season (Dec. 20), has reeled off back-to-back victories, most recently dumping visiting Indiana 69-60 Dec. 26. Junior G Ayo Dosunmu, who scored a game-high 30 points vs. the Hoosiers, leads the Illini with 24.1 PPG and averages 7.2 rebounds and a team-best 5.2 assists per game. Sophomore C Kofi Cockburn chips in 17.2 PPG and a team-high 9.9 RPG. The Illini have won their last eight at home dating back to last season.
  3. The Illini swept the Boilermakers last season to snap a 4-game skid in the series. Illinois won 79-72 as a 6-point dog at Purdue Jan. 21. That was just 16 days after the Illini shut down the Boilers 63-37 as 1.5-point home favorites.

PASS. The Illini’s -450 price is too expensive and just not smart sports wagering.

Against the spread (ATS)

PURDUE +8.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. The Boilers haven’t forgotten their two losses to the Illini last January, including the dismal 37-point showing in Champaign. Head coach Matt Painter will have his squad ready to give the Illini all they can ask for.

ATS records: Purdue 3-7-1 | Illinois 6-4

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 149.5 is the way to go. Following the Rutgers loss, Painter has emphasized Purdue’s defense has to improve. Look for the Boilers to step it up a notch in attempting to slow down the Illini’s 87.3 PPG average. This should look more like Illinois’ 69-60 win vs. Indiana, but a bit closer.

Purdue at Rutgers: Three things to know

  1. The Scarlet Knights are looking to bounce back from their first setback of the season. They took an 80-68 loss at Ohio State last Wednesday. Rutgers shot a season-low 41.4% from the field in that contest. For the season, RU ranks third in the Big Ten with a 49.8% accuracy mark from the floor. The Knights were also out-rebounded 42-23 by the Buckeyes.
  2. Purdue has won four of five games since scoring a season-low 54 points in a Dec. 8 loss at Miami (58-54). The game the Boilermakers dropped in that stretch was two back when they scored just 55 points at Iowa. The games against the Hurricanes and Hawkeyes mark Purdue’s only true road games this season. The Boilers shot under 40% from the field in each of those games
  3. The Knights downed the Boilermakers twice last season, covering as 3-point favorites in a 70-63 win at home (Jan. 28) and winning outright (71-68) as a 5-point underdog March 7. Rutgers is 4-1 against the spread in its last five games with Purdue (2-0 ATS at home).

Purdue at Rutgers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Rutgers 70, Purdue 66

Money line (ML)

To win the game outright, Purdue will likely need to drain 3-pointers, leverage an advantage in offensive rebounding, and knock down free throws. PU has scuffled from distance on the road (24%) and has been shaky of late on uncontested 15-footers (62.9% last three games).

Keep an eye on the line: Rutgers is a value play at -145, but PASS at anything lower than that price.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Knights have been clicking at a top-40 level in efficiency analytics at both ends of the floor. They take care of the basketball and defend well at the rim but an uptick on the spread nixes much of the value to be had here.

THE LEAN IS ON RUTGERS -3.5 (-105), but a partial-unit play may be in order unless you can get a -3 tag or better.

Over/Under (O/U)

Rutgers has a few injury concerns; they aren’t major enough to nix taking the Knights as a side, but a team already out-kicking its coverage from a FG% standpoint could well be getting by at a number far south of its 80.6 point per game output.

  2. The Boilermakers are looking to rebound after a 70-55 beatdown in Iowa City against the fifth-ranked Hawkeyes Tuesday. Purdue also limps in with a 1-4-1 ATS mark across the past six outings while winning just three of the past five overall.
  3. Purdue enters with a rather mediocre 70.5 free-throw percentage so far, while hitting just 46.6% from the field. Maryland has hit just 71.7% from the charity stripe, and 48.8% from the floor.

Money line (ML)

Purdue (-225) should be able to push past Maryland (+185) in this Big Ten conference tilt, but they’re a risky play at more than two times your potential return. PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

PURDUE -5.5 (-105) is worth a small-unit play on its home floor, but don’t expect this game to get out of hand. Purdue is 1-4-1 ATS across the past six games, but Maryland is 0-3 ATS across the past three, and 1-4 ATS over its previous five.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 138.5 (-110) is the play, going 3-1-1 in Maryland’s past five outings. The Terps have hit 79 or more points in five of seven games with a push in their lone conference tilt. This won’t be an up-tempo game with a total in the 150’s, but a total of 140 isn’t unreasonable in the least.

  1. Purdue defeated Notre Dame 88-78 Saturday as a 4.5-point favorite on a neutral floor in Indianapolis. Junior G’s Eric Hunter Jr. and Sasha Stefanovic scored 18 points apiece as the Boilermakers won their third in a row. Hunter Jr. averages 14.3 points per game to lead four Boilers in double-figures. Junior F Trevion Williams, who averages 13.8 PPG, is Purdue’s top rebounder at 9.8 RPG.
  2. Iowa suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, dropping a 99-88 decision to top-ranked Gonzaga in Sioux Falls, Idaho. The Hawkeyes, who were 4.5-point dogs, hung tough through the first 10 minutes before the Bulldogs turned a 25-24 lead into a 51-37 halftime advantage. Senior C Luka Garza scored a game-high 30 points for Iowa, which trailed most of the second half by double-digits. Garza leads the country with 29.3 PPG and is pulling down a team-high 9.1 RPG.
  3. Purdue has won its last four vs. Iowa, including the last two at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Boilers swept the Hawkeyes last season: 104-68 at home Feb. 5 and 77-68 at Iowa March 3. In the most recent battle, Purdue led 42-25 at the half, Hunter Jr. scored a team-high 19 points for the Boilers and the Hawkeyes’ Garza netted a game-high 26 points.

PASS. Iowa (-300) should snap its personal losing streak to Purdue, but it’s not worth risking 3 times your potential return. However, the Boilermakers are tempting at +240.

Against the spread (ATS)

PURDUE +7.5 (-115) is the worth a HALF-UNIT WAGER. Iowa has no problem scoring, but its defense was exposed by Gonzaga in last weekend’s loss. The Hawkeyes allow opponents to shoot 40.8% from the field (ranking 122nd) and 33.3% on 3-pointers (207th).

The Boilermakers should keep it within the spread if they stick to their offensive averages: 47.5% from the field (76th) and 38.8% behind the arc (38th).

  1. Ohio State edged out Cleveland State at home as a 23-point favorite 67-61. The Buckeyes play a very methodical style of basketball as they feature the 287th-fastest pace in the nation and rarely turn the ball over (sixth in turnover percentage).
  2. Purdue eased past Indiana State 80-68 in its last game but didn’t cover as a 15.5-point favorite. Boilermakers PF Trevion Williams balled out to the tune of 30 points on 13-for-18 shooting and 11 rebounds in the win.

Ohio State at Purdue: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

PASS. I’m on Purdue (-200) here, but it’s too expensive for a conference opener. Ohio State is undefeated and beat the brakes off Purdue 68-52 in last season’s meeting.

Against the spread (ATS)

Purdue’s effective field-goal percentage is 42 points higher (.547 eFG% vs. .505 eFG%) and has played a much harder schedule: The Boilermakers are ranked 84th in strength of schedule and Ohio State is 270th.

Also, the Boilermakers do a better job moving the ball: 19th in assists per field goals made with five players who average double figures in points per game, while the Buckeyes are ranked 195th in assists per field goals made.

Lastly, this is your quintessential Pros vs. Joes game: 52% of the money is on Purdue, but 62% of the bets are on Ohio State. It makes sense. The Buckeyes are one of the most popular athletic colleges in the country. Plus, they’re ranked and undefeated whereas the Boilermakers are not. Yet BetMGM made the non-ranked, two-loss team a clear favorite.

Over/Under (O/U)

Using 2017 as a starting point again, both teams’ O/U trends have me leaning UNDER 133.5 (-105). The most lopsided total trends are for Ohio State, which is 7-12 O/U as a road dog and 16-26 O/U in Big Ten games since 2017.

Furthermore, I mentioned how methodical Ohio State is. Well, Purdue plays almost as slow (266th-fastest pace in the country). That being said, I wouldn’t bet UNDER 133.5 (-105) too heavy because we aren’t getting the best of the number – the total opened at 136.

  1. Nebraska kept it close in a 26-20 loss to Iowa as a 12-point road underdog and even out-gained the Hawkeyes by 16 total yards. The main factor was a Nebraska muffed punt in the fourth quarter, which led to an Iowa field goal extending its lead to the final margin.
  2. Purdue lost 37-30 to Rutgers as a 12-point favorite for its third straight loss last week. These teams played to nearly a draw in the stats but Rutgers got a crucial 100-yard kick return touchdown from WR Aron Cruickshank in the third quarter following a Purdue touchdown that put them up 30-20.
  3. Nebraska has lost both games (straight up and ATS) against Purdue since head coach Scott Frost took over the program in 2018.

This feels like the sucker spot of the week but GIMME PURDUE (-115) for 2 units.

I am confused as to what BetMGM sees in this Nebraska team. Purdue has been on the losing side of three consecutive one-score games and if the Boilermakers win one or two of those coin flip games what is this line? Nebraska’s lone win came against the worst Penn State football team in program history.

The Boilermakers have a plus net points per play and yards per play while Nebraska has a negative net in both metrics. Purdue is better in high leverage situations—3rd down conversion and red-zone scoring percentages.

Finally, this is a Pros vs. Joes spot with 74% of the money wagered on Purdue and 62% of the bets placed on Nebraska, according to Pregame.com.

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS. I’ll pay an extra 5 cents on the dollar to get Purdue straight up.

Over/Under (O/U)

Nebraska does not have a good offense but it is 28th in first down rate and 27th in busted drive rate on offense, according to Football Outsiders. The Cornhuskers shoot themselves in the foot by being minus-6 in turnover differential and averaging 6.6 penalties per game (85th in the nation).

Instead of siding with one faction of the market like we did in the ATS section, let’s fade the market and TAKE UNDER 62.5 (-110) for a half unit. The total has been steamed up from the 58-point opener because 90% of the money and 70% of the bets are on the Over.

It’s more of a lean than a like, though, because it’s not like a bunch of squares are running out to bet the Over in Nebraska-Purdue.

  1. Rutgers took a rough triple-overtime loss at the hands of Michigan 48-42 last week. The Scarlet Knights covered as 11-point home underdogs, but Rutgers did have a 6-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
  2. Purdue was absolutely screwed by one of the worst referee calls you’ll ever see last week in a 34-31 loss to Minnesota. TE Payne Durham’s would-be go-ahead touchdown catch with 52 seconds remaining was negated by a phantom offensive pass interference penalty.
  3. The Scarlet Knights and Boilermakers have only played once since Rutgers joined the Big Ten in 2014. Rutgers upset Purdue 14-12 and covered as a 9.5-point underdog in October 2017.

I don’t see Purdue losing a third straight game against a feisty, but 1-4 Rutgers team. However, no way I am laying more than 4-to-1 for an outright Purdue win in a conference game.

PASS ON THE MONEY LINE. 

Against the spread (ATS)

Purdue is way too one-dimensional for me to lay such a big number. The Boilermakers’ offensive imbalance explains why they haven’t been covering as favorites (Purdue is 0-4 ATS in its last 4 games as a favorite).

The Boilermakers are 123rd in rushing yards per game, plus Football Outsiders grades their offensive line 118th in line yards, 108th in opportunity rate and 123rd in stuff rate. If Purdue can’t salt away a game with its ground attack, then that leaves the backdoor cover wide open for Rutgers.

Also, Purdue starting defensive end, and former five-star recruit, George Karlaftis will miss the game after testing positive for COVID. It’s a mystery how Purdue will get a successful pass rush as Karlaftis has two of the Boilers’ three sacks this season – the Boilermakers rank 125th in sack rate.

Lastly, we can fade the market by taking the Scarlet Knights here. This line opened at Purdue -10.5 and the spread has only moved to the current price even though 84% of the money wagered and 71% of the bets placed is on the Boilermakers, according to Pregame.com. The lack of movement in the spread despite the overwhelming support for Purdue is puzzling.

GIMME RUTGERS +11 (-110) for 1 unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

Rutgers passing game has been trending in the right direction and Purdue’s pass defense has been bad this season. The Boilermakers aren’t getting to the quarterback and they are 63rd in opponent’s completion percentage and 91st in opponent’s passing yards per game.

Purdue WR Rondale Moore, a future NFL receiver, made his 2020 debut last game (15 catches for 116 yards). He joins WR David Bell, who’s been fantastic this season and will be playing on Sundays, too.

Furthermore, both team’s weak ground games and poor pass defenses mean these teams will be slinging the rock around the field. Take OVER 60.5 (-110) for 1 unit.

  1. The Flames won their 30th game of the season on March 8, cutting down the nets at the Atlantic Sun Tournament with a 73-57 spanking of Lipscomb. Unfortunately for Liberty, that second consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament never came, as the season was wiped out a few days later.
  2. Purdue stumbled through a 16-15 regular season with a sub-.500 mark in conference play at 9-11. The Boilermakers were 12-7 on their home floor, but 4-8 elsewhere. Purdue was also 13-16-2 ATS while the Over edged the Under 16-15. G Eric Hunter Jr., one of three returning starters, will not be with the team due to a broken leg suffered during a preseason scrimmage.
  3. Liberty has three starters back from that 30-win season, including G Elijah Cuffee and G Darius McGhee. Cuffee is the preseason Defensive Player of the Year in the Atlantic Sun, while McGhee was named to the A-Sun first team.

LIBERTY (+375) is primed for the upset here. The Flames won 27 games during the regular season, and three more in their conference tournament, and they have three experienced starters back from that group. Purdue (-500) will have just two starters back from a mediocre team last season, as Hunter is out at least another month.

The Flames are a great value play, especially since this game is on a neutral-site floor.

Against the spread (ATS)

LIBERTY +9.5 (-106) is a bargain play at nearly double digits, as it won’t be fazed by playing one of the big boys. The Flames were primed and ready to perhaps slay a giant in the Big Dance before the season was wiped out in mid-March. The Flames have a sour taste in their mouths, but an opening-night upset of Purdue will make head coach Ritchie McKay’s group feel a little better.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 123.5 (-115) is a little on the low side, but not by much. We should see late free throws push this total over the finish line, perhaps even in the final minute. If you play the total, go very lightly, as it’s going to be close.

  • Minnesota won last year’s meeting 38-31 in a late September game at West Lafayette, Ind. Trailing 28-17 entering the final quarter, Purdue managed to score two touchdowns in the final 6 minutes to make it close. The Boilermakers were a minus-2 in turnover margin in what was a relatively even-yardage game.
  • The Gophers have won five straight series games at home vs. the Boilermakers. Minnesota is 3-2 ATS over those five contests, but the two non-covers were in games that had the Gophers tabbed as double-digit favorites (2014, ’16).
  • Junior RB Mohamed Ibrahim has helped the Golden Gophers pile up over 35 minutes of possession time per game. Ibrahim is a workhorse back who has averaged 32.5 carries per game and 5.5 yards per attempt. His 715 rushing yards and 10 rushing TDs have been a key part of a Minnesota offense which ranks fourth in the nation in time of possession (35:36).

The Gophers are a slight lean, but not enough to warrant a play on implied odds of 51.46%. It’d require a tag of +140-or-better to make for some value here. PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

The underdog is 5-2 ATS in the last seven games in this series. The Golden Gophers lost to Iowa last week; they are 6-1 ATS over their last seven games following a straight-up loss.

The Minnesota offense has been really bad (7.9 yards per play — 126th FBS) in its four games, but that YPP figure is tinged with a horrendous start over the team’s first two games and a better effort over the last two. The UM defensive struggles also overshadow Purdue’s offensive woes: The Boilermakers’ 369 yards per game rank 86th in the nation.

Minnesota was undone by horrible field position in last week’s contest. Figure on UM having enough pass defense and enough of a ground game to cover here. Back the GOPHERS +1 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

The Gophers will want to clock a lead or anything close. A 20-something-20-something score is more likely than either side getting 35. Back the UNDER 60.5 (-106).
