PASS. Banking on a home upset of a Top-25 team is risky business.

While Ohio State’s +380 price offers some value based on how well it has played this season, I’d prefer the points for the best wager in this Big Ten battle, especially as Purdue has just one home loss on the season.

Against the spread

LEAN to OHIO STATE +9.5 (-108).

For a Big Ten battle between two quality teams, an almost double-figure spread is far too much. The Buckeyes have taken down teams like Duke, Wisconsin and Penn State.

Ohio State ranks No. 39 in 3-point efficiency, while Purdue struggles to limit teams from deep, allowing them to shoot 32.8% to rank 160th in the nation.

Similarly, Purdue’s offense is elite, averaging 50.6% from the field and 40.9% from 3, but Ohio State is holding opponents to just 40.8% from the field.

The Buckeyes should be able to play to the Boilermakers’ weakness, which should at least make this game competitive.

Over/Under

BET OVER 147.5 (-107).

This is my favorite play of the game as Purdue’s offense is no joke.

It ranks fourth in points per game, third in field-goal percentage and fourth in 3-point percentage in the nation. The Boilermakers have notched or topped 80 points in 4 of their last 5 games. They’re 12-8 O/U this season.

The Buckeyes are 11-6 O/U. They’ve scored 75 or more in 3 of their last 5 and are averaging 75.1 PPG. A Top-25 team in terms of field-goal rate, if this is a high-paced game, which it’s expected to be, the shooting should bode well for them to score more.

  1. Ohio State’s 79-75 first-round victory over Minnesota snapped a 4-game losing skid, but the Buckeyes failed to cover as 11.5-point favorites extending its ATS losing streak to five games.
  2. The Boilermakers came into the Big 10 tourney as one of the hottest teams in the conference, winning and covering five straight and six of their previous seven games.
  3. Purdue won both regular-season games against Ohio State: 67-65 as a 5.5-point road ‘dog Jan. 19 and 67-60 Dec. 16 but pushed as 7-point home favorites. The Boilermakers have beaten the Buckeyes in four of their last five meetings (3-1-1 ATS).

Money line (ML)

Even though Ohio State (-120) was ranked as high as 4th in the country and won its first-round game, PURDUE (+100) is playing its best basketball entering the postseason.

The Boilermakers are a much bigger team leading to a significant edge in the rebounding department, which will lead to more Purdue possessions.

It’s only a lean on PURDUE (+100) because we’re at plus money. If the money line gets more expensive I’d rather lay the points, and the total is my favorite bet in this game.

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS with a lean on Purdue +1.5 (-110) because I prefer the total more than the side and the money is a better option as long as it doesn’t get above -135.

Over/Under (O/U)

Purdue’s defense has really stepped up in its last five wins. The Boilermakers are holding opponents to just 60.4 points per game on 38.5% from the field and 27.2% from behind the arc over that span.

Both teams play at an ultra-slow pace and don’t force a lot of turnovers so don’t expect the defenses to lead to any offense. Furthermore, the previous three Ohio State-Purdue games all went Under the total and three of the last four games for the Boilermakers.

GIMME UNDER 142.5 (-110) for 1.25 units.

Ohio State at Purdue: Three things to know

  1. Ohio State edged out Cleveland State at home as a 23-point favorite 67-61. The Buckeyes play a very methodical style of basketball as they feature the 287th-fastest pace in the nation and rarely turn the ball over (sixth in turnover percentage).
  2. Purdue eased past Indiana State 80-68 in its last game but didn’t cover as a 15.5-point favorite. Boilermakers PF Trevion Williams balled out to the tune of 30 points on 13-for-18 shooting and 11 rebounds in the win.
  3. Since 2017 (Chris Holtmann’s first season as Buckeyes head coach), Ohio State is just 7-12 ATS as a road dog, while Purdue has performed well as a home favorite (28-20-1 ATS with a plus-3.9-point average ATS margin).

PASS. I’m on Purdue (-200) here, but it’s too expensive for a conference opener. Ohio State is undefeated and beat the brakes off Purdue 68-52 in last season’s meeting.

Against the spread (ATS)

Purdue’s effective field-goal percentage is 42 points higher (.547 eFG% vs. .505 eFG%) and has played a much harder schedule: The Boilermakers are ranked 84th in strength of schedule and Ohio State is 270th.

Also, the Boilermakers do a better job moving the ball: 19th in assists per field goals made with five players who average double figures in points per game, while the Buckeyes are ranked 195th in assists per field goals made.

Lastly, this is your quintessential Pros vs. Joes game: 52% of the money is on Purdue, but 62% of the bets are on Ohio State. It makes sense. The Buckeyes are one of the most popular athletic colleges in the country. Plus, they’re ranked and undefeated whereas the Boilermakers are not. Yet BetMGM made the non-ranked, two-loss team a clear favorite.

GIMME PURDUE -4.5 (-110) for 2 units.

Over/Under (O/U)

Using 2017 as a starting point again, both teams’ O/U trends have me leaning UNDER 133.5 (-105). The most lopsided total trends are for Ohio State, which is 7-12 O/U as a road dog and 16-26 O/U in Big Ten games since 2017.

Furthermore, I mentioned how methodical Ohio State is. Well, Purdue plays almost as slow (266th-fastest pace in the country). That being said, I wouldn’t bet UNDER 133.5 (-105) too heavy because we aren’t getting the best of the number – the total opened at 136.
