The New England Patriots will be without one of their best players for the first six weeks of the 2021 season, including a Week 3 matchup with the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 26. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday that the Patriots placed cornerback Stephon Gilmore on the physically unable to perform list (PUP) with a quad injury that has sidelined him for much of the summer.

If the Saints designate wide receiver Michael Thomas to the same PUP list (as is expected while he recovers from ankle surgery), it means both the 2019 Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year won’t be facing each other. Marquez Callaway has admirably filled in on top of the Saints depth chart throughout training camp, while Jalen Mills and J.C. Jackson have taken the lead in the New England secondary.

Dee Eskridge, Travis Homer expected to be activated off PUP List

Seattle Seahawks rookie receiver Dee Eskridge and running back Travis Homer are expected to be activated off the Seahawks PUP List this week.

The Seattle Seahawks have been battling a number of injuries over the last couple of weeks, but coach Pete Carroll was able to provide some good news after the Seahawks’ 20-7 loss to the Raiders in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

“We should get a real boost this week of guys returning to us,” Carroll said.

Rookie wide receiver Dee Eskridge and running back Travis Homer are both expected to be activated off the Seahawks’ physically unable to perform list this week.

Eskridge, Seattle’s highest draft pick this year, has been suffering from a toe injury since the Seahawks’ OTAs earlier this spring.

“We’re going to take the wrapping off of him next week,” Carroll told reporters. “We’re excited to get him back. He looks fantastic in his workouts. He looks great. We’ve got to make sure before he really gets into full-speed action that he’s back and in condition for that, but as far as his power and his strength, all that kind of stuff, he’s back. We’re really looking forward to that.

“Travis Homer is at that same point too. Both of those guys are ready to bounce back next week.”

Homer, now in his third season, has been sidelined with a calf issue.

The Seahawks return to practice Monday, although there is no media availability until Tuesday.

Raiders CB Isaiah Johnson cleared to come off PUP after passing physical

Today the Raiders take the field for their first preseason game. After which they have a day off before returning to practice on Monday. When they do, they could have a couple of players take the field who haven’t practiced yet this training camp.

The latest to pass his physical, clearing him to come off the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list is CB Isaiah Johnson. He joins rookie LB Divine Deablo who is also on the PUP and who also passed his physical this week.

Johnson was a 2019 fourth round pick out of Houston. The 6-2, 210-pounder has appeared in 19 career games with no starts.

His most memorable moment came against the Chargers in LA last season when on the final two plays of the game, he defended passes that might have otherwise been touchdowns.

Those two pass breakups were twice as many as he had had coming into the game and as many as he had the rest of last season. Injuries have been a bit of an issue for Johnson and last season he even landed on the reserve/COVID-19 list for a time. He has some ground to make up at cornerback if he’s going to find a spot on this roster again.

Seahawks rookie WR D’Wayne Eskridge now running without problems

Seattle Seahawks rookie wide receiver D’Wayne Eskridge is now running without problems but still remains on the PUP list with a toe injury.

Seattle Seahawks rookie wide receiver D’Wayne Eskridge has yet to practice this summer after starting training camp on the team’s physically unable to perform list with a toe injury.

Coach Pete Carroll has been monitoring the situation carefully and providing regular updates on the rookie’s progress.

“He had a really good day again,” Carroll told reporters on Tuesday. “This was the fifth day in a row of him running and conditioning without any problems. That’s a really good sign.”

Eskridge injured his toe earlier in the year during the Seahawks OTAs and hasn’t been able to return to the field since. Carroll sees no reason to rush the first-year player just yet.

“We’re trying to make sure – because he has not been able to run in a conditioning manner over the offseason like we would like – we’re trying to make sure he’s in good shape so once he’s back out here he can sustain,” Carroll explained. “It’s all very positive and he’s going in the right direction.”

Luckily for Seattle, the Seahawks are fairly deep at the receiver position heading into the first preseason game this Saturday in Las Vegas.

Cowboys’ Cooper taken off PUP; catching Prescott passes at practice

The veteran wideout has been cleared to return to practice, and wasted no time getting in some one-on-one work with QB Dak Prescott. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Wide receiver Amari Cooper has passed his physical, and the Cowboys have removed him from the Physically Unable to Perform list as of Tuesday morning. He is now eligible to return to practice with the team.

Cooper had been recovering from an offseason ankle surgery to remove some bone spurs, but he has experienced bone inflammation since then, which has held him out of team drills thus far in Oxnard. Cooper stated recently that the inflammation is improving.

“I’m close to 100 percent,” Cooper said last week when asked about the status of his rehab. “I wouldn’t say I’m quite 100 percent yet, to be completely candid. But I’m real close.”

In a development that will further delight Cowboys Nation, the 27-year-old has already been spotted running routes and catching passes from quarterback Dak Prescott, who is himself just back to work after a shoulder strain.

Now that he is able to practice fully, Cooper maintains that his goal of being ready for the team’s September 9th opener against the defending Super Bowl champion Buccaneers is still intact.

Marcus Maye, Folorunso Fatukasi and Jonathan Marshall cleared to practice

The Jets took Marcus Maye, Folorunso Fatukasi and Jonathan Marshall off the PUP/NFI lists before the first practice of training camp.

The Jets got a little healthier before the first practice of training camp.

Marcus Maye, Folorunso Fatukasi and Jonathan Marshall all passed their physicals and are eligible to return to practice, the team announced. Maye and Fatukasi had previously been placed on the non-football injury (NFI) list, while Marshall was on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

Five Jets are not cleared for practice: Quinnen Williams, Ashtyn Davis and Kyle Phillips will remain on the PUP list, while Vinny Curry is still on the NFI list. George Fant, meanwhile, was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Mekhi Becton, who has been dealing with plantar fasciitis throughout the offseason, avoided being placed on a list. He’s still receiving treatment on his foot but said he’ll practice Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

The foursome of Williams, Davis, Phillips and Curry can return to practice once they pass their physicals and are activated. If they are still on their respective lists after the preseason, they’ll have to miss the first six games of the season.

Texans OT Marcus Cannon, G Lane Taylor to start camp on PUP list

The Houston Texans have placed tackle Marcus Cannon and guard Lane Taylor on the physically unable to perform list to start training camp.

The Houston Texans have placed two offensive linemen on the physically unable to perform list to start training camp.

According to Aaron Wilson of Sports Talk 790, Marcus Cannon and Lane Taylor will go on the PUP list to start camp. They can be activated at any time, pending they pass their physicals.

Cannon had arthroscopic knee surgery in the offseason, and the procedure could sideline him for a large portion of training camp.

Taylor, 31, had surgery to repair his ACL, and is expected to compete for the starting job.

The Texans also released long snapper Mitchell Fabroni and are hosting Dennis Kelly, formerly of the Tennessee Titans, for a visit. Kelly is the brother of Houston offensive coordinator Tim Kelly.

Amari Cooper, DeMarcus Lawrence not expected back for Cowboys until after 2nd preseason game

Cooper and Lawrence started camp on the PUP list; team owner Jerry Jones predicts neither will see action until the team returns to Dallas.

Amari Cooper and DeMarcus Lawrence have yet to suit up during training camp. The wideout and edge rusher were placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list before camp; Cooper has an ankle issue and Lawrence is dealing with a back injury.

While the team has expressed no official concern about either superstar being ready for the kickoff of the regular season, it’s always disconcerting for a starter to be missing valuable practice time with their unit. Coaches, players, and fans alike would no doubt feel reassured to see all the team’s A-listers getting quality reps.

For Cooper, and Lawrence, it sounds like that won’t happen until the team returns to The Star in Frisco after its California camping trip.

Owner Jerry Jones was asked about the status of both players; team staff writer David Helman notes that Jones had a short answer for when they’ll be back in the mix.

“I bet it’s after Arizona,” Jones said.

The Cowboys will head to Canton next week for the Hall of Fame Game, and then return to Oxnard for another week of practice. They’ll hop a short flight to Glendale to face the Cardinals on September 13, and then come home to Dallas afterward.

That will leave the team with three weeks and two preseason games to go before Week 1’s meeting with the Super Bowl champ Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Ample time for veterans like Cooper and Lawrence to get themselves up to speed.

“We’ll get some game activity, I think, out of all those guys,” Jones offered.

Traded to 49ers, former Saints LB Kiko Alonso (ACL) won’t play in 2020

Former New Orleans Saints linebacker Kiko Alonso has not recovered from an ACL injury, meaning he will not play for the San Francisco 49ers.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”Pv7q8TWY55-1040193-7498″]

The New Orleans Saints added a big upgrade to their linebacker corps by trading with the San Francisco 49ers for Kwon Alexander, swapping a future draft pick and injured veteran Kiko Alonso in exchange. Alonso had not been cleared to practice for the Saints since tearing his ACL back in January.

NBA Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco reported Tuesday that Alonso will remain on the PUP list after his practice window expired. He wasn’t able to return to work, so the year will end without him taking a single snap with his new team. For the curious, Alexander logged 43 snaps for the Saints in Sunday’s win over the 49ers, second-most among New Orleans’ linebackers.

It’s a really tough break for Alonso, who has suffered a series of knee injuries and is one of the most-traded players in NFL history. In 2015, the team that drafted him, the Buffalo Bills, traded Alonso to the Philadelphia Eagles. Philly traded him to the Miami Dolphins in 2016. New Orleans acquired him from Miami in a 2019 trade. And on Nov. 2, 2020, he was traded to San Francisco.

Maybe he can continue to heal up near his hometown of Los Gatos, Calif., just outside Santa Clara (where the 49ers now play at their still-new Levi’s Stadium). He’s headed for free agency in the spring, and might enjoy the opportunity to stay close to home if San Francisco is interested in re-signing him.

Austin Bryant activated from PUP, Darryl Roberts placed on IR

The Detroit Lions announced that they have activated EDGE Austin Bryant from the PUP (physically unable to perform) list and placed corner Darryl Roberts on injured reserve in a corresponding move.

The Detroit Lions announced that they have activated EDGE Austin Bryant from the PUP (physically unable to perform) list and placed corner Darryl Roberts on injured reserve in a corresponding move.

Bryant has been on and off various injury reports since he was drafted in 2019, only playing in the final four games of his rookie season. He has yet to see game action in 2020 but he began practicing two-and-a-half weeks ago and is finally healthy enough to return to the active roster.

With Trey Flowers landing on injured reserve and newly acquired Everson Griffen just joining the team earlier this week, the Lions need depth on the edge and Bryant should help give them that.

Roberts has been dealing with hip and groin injuries for two week’s now, and with the Lions getting healthy at cornerback — Justin Coleman returned last week and Desmond Trufant is expected to return Sunday — the team is in a position where they can give him an opportunity to rest and recover over the next three weeks.

Roberts will be eligible to return to the active roster after Week 11.
