Jamier Jones, a top recruit in class of 2025, commits to Providence

It’s a big win for Kim English and the Friars program.

Providence basketball got some good news on Sunday, with highly rated small forward Jamier Jones announcing that he has committed to the Friars program.

The 6-foot-6 talent out of Oak Ridge (Fla.) chose the Big East school over a top-tier group of possibilities that included Kansas, Ohio State, LSU, South Carolina, and Houston.

Why Providence?

While the current tendency is to look toward the monetary deals available in the NIL space, Jones’ reasoning aligned with the more classic tales from the recruiting trail.

Via On3:

“The loyalty of coach English and the coaching staff. I wouldn’t want to trust any other coaching staff to get me to where I want to be which is the NBA. Everything those guys have been telling me sounds great and I’m just ready to work hard and do what I do to reach my goal!”

It’s a big recruiting win for head coach Kim English and the team, which was left out of the 2024 NCAA Tournament and helps rebuild a roster that lost Big East Player of the Year Devin Carter, who declared for the 2024 NBA draft.

And the Friars might have more good news at the end of the month, with Jaylen Harrell, a four-star recruit and Gatorade Player of the Year in Massachusetts, set to announce his decision on May 27from a list that includes Providence.

Georgia basketball’s Jabri Abdur-Rahim to transfer to Big East school

UGA basketball’s second leading scorer transferring to Big East program

Georgia Bulldogs standout guard Jabri Abdur-Rahim has announced that he plans to transfer to the Providence Friars. Abdur-Rahim brings scoring, shooting, length and experience to the Friars.

Abdur-Rahim elected to enter the transfer portal after his third season with the Bulldogs. Abdur-Rahim is a former top recruit. He was expected to be Georgia’s leading returning scorer, but now will be playing elsewhere.

Overall, Abdur-Rahim averaged 12.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per game for Georgia. His 35.6% three-point shooting provided a boost to the Georgia offense. Abdur-Rahim was Georgia’s second-leading scorer throughout the 2023-2024 basketball season behind Noah Thomasson, who is out of eligibility.

Abdur-Rahim also elected to enter the NBA draft in addition to entering the transfer portal. Abdur-Rahim averaged 26.0 minutes per game before suffering an ankle/foot injury and missing Georgia’s National Invitational Tournament semifinals run. His departure leaves a scoring void for the Bulldogs, but Georgia did play well in the NIT without him.

Bryce Hopkins ACL tear devastating blow for Providence

Bryce Hopkins suffered a torn ACL on Wednesday in Providence’s 61-57 loss to Seton Hall.

The Providence Friars not only suffered a tough 61-57 loss to the Seton Hall Pirates on Wednesday evening, but they were informed the following morning that star wing Bryce Hopkins suffered a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the 2023-24 college basketball season.

Hopkins exited the game in the second half, getting helped off the floor and heading straight to the locker room where he did not return. The worst was confirmed by the program on Thursday morning.

“We all feel for Bryce and his family in this difficult time,” Providence coach Kim English said, per a press release from the team.  “We will be with him throughout this process to help him come back stronger than ever.  We ask that all of Friartown keeps Bryce and his family in your thoughts and prayers.”

The Friars are 11-3 on the year and had started receiving Top 25 buzz before Wednesday’s loss, and the junior wing was a big reason why. Under English, in his first year at Providence taking over for Ed Cooley, Hopkins averaged 15.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.0 steals in 14 games while shooting a career-high 53.3% on two-pointers.

Providence will now have to try to survive in the incredibly deep Big East without their second-leading scorer, putting more pressure on guard Devin Carter (16.2 points) and big man Josh Oduro (14.7 points) to help lead the charge.

Additionally, top freshman Garwey Dual – considered a sleeper in the 2024 NBA draft – will need to step up as well, as the 6’5 guard is only averaging 3.5 points in 21 minutes per game.

Providence heads on the road to face the Creighton Blue Jays on Saturday, January 6. The tip-off is at 3:00 PM ET.

Badgers MBB set to take on Big East foe in Gavitt Tipoff Games

The Big Ten and Big East announced the matchups for the 2023 Gavitt Tipoff Games and the Wisconsin MBB team will participate in the events.

The Big Ten and Big East announced the matchups for the 2023 Gavitt Tipoff Games on Tuesday and the Wisconsin men’s basketball team will participate in the events. In the sixth all-time meeting between the two programs, the Badgers will travel to face Providence on November 14.

To this point, Wisconsin holds a 1-4 record over five games all-time against the Friars, most recently falling to them 63-58 in the 2021 Gavitt Games in November of 2021.

The Badgers will have their entire starting lineup back from the 2022-2023 season as well as their coaching staff, but Providence will be operating under new head coach Kim English this season after Ed Cooley left for Georgetown in March.

In what could be a make-or-break season for Greg Gard and his staff in Madison, they’ll draw a tough non-conference road test early in 2023. Overall, Gard has produced an 8-5 record all-time against the Big East.

Texas basketball might need to act fast for one transfer portal center

Texas may have to contend with Providence and Memphis to land one transfer portal big man.

College basketball free agency is underway just before the NCAA Tournament. It appears two Tournament participants are targeting TCU transfer center Eddie Lampkin for next season.

It would appear Providence head coach Ed Cooley and Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway are working to bring Lampkin to their respective teams. Albeit, it’s fair to question to which team Ed Cooley is recruiting Lampkin.

Cooley has been rumored as a possibility to fill the head coaching vacancy for the legendary basketball program at Georgetown. Regardless of where he coaches, Cooley has a strong pitch that will be difficult to beat.

It’s apparent that Texas will need bigs next season. The Longhorns could bring back Dylan Mitchell to pair with elite Duncanville talent Ron Holland. Even so, neither would give the team the defensive post presence it needs.

With Dylan Disu’s return uncertain and Christian Bishop departing, Texas could use a taller player or two through the transfer portal. Whether or not Lampkin is a priority, that position is a pressing need.

Texas’ search for post players will be worth monitoring over the summer.

Could Texas and these teams be on upset alert?

We look at some of the most dangerous potential Round of 64 upsets.

March Madness is underway in Dayton, Ohio with two Tuesday play-in games. They call it madness for the upsets that are about to ensue.

A handful of schools have put themselves on the map in recent seasons. Miami head coach Jim Laranaga made the George Mason Patriots famous in a Final Four run as a No. 11 seed in 2006. Shaka Smart took his No. 12 seeded VCU Rams as far a few years later.

The more shocking upsets come from higher seeds. Last season, St. Peter’s made history as the first No. 15 seed to reach the Elite 8. Before they could start the run, the Peacocks had to get past No. 2 seeded Kentucky.

While the Longhorns could fall prey to No. 15 seed Colgate, I wouldn’t anticipate Texas to lose. The most likely upsets usually occur with teams ranked between No. 9 and No. 13 seeds. Let’s look at some of the teams who can pull off potential upsets.

Providence vs Villanova Game Preview

Why Providence Will Win

The Big East champion – the first regular season title in the program’s history – can now tune up a bit.

Better yet, it can get some rest and get ready for the Big East Tournament, but that’s not what it’s going to do.

This continues to be a strange team that defies logic and reason. It shoots well okay, it does an okay job from three, and its defense loads up enough when needed in key moments.

It’s this simple. You have to shoot lights out or Providence will find a way to win.

It’s 1-3 when allowing teams to make 49% or more of their shots, and it’s 23-0 against teams that can’t get there.

Villanova has only shot 49% or better nine times in 28 games.

Why Villanova Will Win

Villanova can send a message.

Yeah, Providence has already won the Big East regular season title, but that means a fat load of jack squat over the next few weeks once tournament season starts. Now it’s all about the sprint, and this is where the Wildcats can send a message.

It’s not like the Friars are going to want to take it easy in their regular season finale, but a win by Villanova could change the attitude and psyche going into the conference tournament …

Blah, blah, blah. Villanova can shoot its way to the win.

The Wildcats beat the Friars two weeks ago on the road by hitting 51% from the field and doing a great job from three and on the line. And …

What’s Going To Happen

Villanova has lost once at home. It’s not going to lose here.

The offense will be good, the defense will be great, and it’ll come up with a strong win to go 2-0 against the – for the moment – Big East champs.

Providence vs Creighton Game Preview

Why Creighton Will Win

Creighton is shooting well enough to pull this off.

The Bluejays have won six straight be doing a great job of simply getting the right shot. They might not be great from three, but they’re fantastic at moving the ball around, getting the assist, and scoring lots and lots of points.

They’re great at getting out on the move, better at getting to the basket, and they’re hitting more than half of their shots.

Can this work on the road? They’re not showing quite as well away from Nebraska, but they’re about to make Providence have to push.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Providence Will Win

It’s been a wild ride for the Friars.

They lost to Villanova, slipped by Butler in overtime, and won what might have been the best game of the 2021-2022 college basketball season in the 99-92 triple-overtime thriller over Xavier – that just so happened to be played as other parts of the planet were melting down.

They took everything Xavier had to hit them with, but they turned out to be phenomenal from three – especially in the clutch – and they survived.

How did Villanova pull off the win two weeks ago? They went Villanova and were great from three. That’s not Creighton.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Once again, Providence will get pushed very, very hard, and once again they’ll come through.

Creighton will get up fast and pull ahead with a big scoring run, but Providence will start chipping away until it has a chance to finally pull back ahead in the final five minutes.

Providence will get the free throws the Bluejays won’t.
