49ers have 4 players leading NFC Pro Bowl vote

The 49ers are dominating on the field and in Pro Bowl voting.

The 49ers’ 10-1 start hasn’t gone unnoticed in Pro Bowl voting. The NFC’s top team has the most Pro Bowl votes of any team heading into Week 13. The Ravens, Saints, Packers and Vikings are all behind them.

Here are the four 49ers who lead their positions:

FB Kyle Juszczyk
TE George Kittle
DE Nick Bosa
CB Richard Sherman

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see that group stay on top of those spots. Other candidates to land in the 2020 Pro Bowl include DL DeForest Buckner, DL Arik Armstead, LB Fred Warner, and RB Raheem Mostert for his work on special teams. Voting updates weren’t provided outside of the No. 1 player at each position.

Getting four or more players to the NFL’s all-star game would be a great sign for the 49ers, but if things continue falling their way, their players will play in the Super Bowl instead.

Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins leads AFC Pro Bowl voting for receivers

Houston Texans receiver DeAndre Hopkins leads Pro Bowl voting in the AFC among wideouts.

Houston Texans receiver DeAndre Hopkins is receiving the recognition he deserves.

To start Week 13, the NFL released updated Pro Bowl voting, and the two-time All-Pro is the top vote-getter among AFC receivers.

On the season, Hopkins is second in the NFL with 81 receptions and 11th in the league with 839 receiving yards. The former 2013 first-round pick is tied for the seventh-most receiving touchdowns in the NFL with six.

Quarterback Deshaun Watson is not leading the AFC in votes at his position. The Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson owns that top spot with 361,096 votes. To illustrate how tough quarterback will be on the AFC roster, Kansas City Chiefs field general Patrick Mahomes is the second-highest vote-getter overall with 286,205.

The San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Ravens, New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, and Minnesota Vikings are the top-5 teams with Pro Bowl votes.

Houston will take on the New England Patriots on Sunday Night Football at NRG Stadium in Week 13. If Hopkins is able to have a great game against cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who is playing arguably the best football at his position this year, then it should help Hopkins keep his top spot among Pro Bowl voters.

Seahawks continuing to groom Travis Homer as kick returner

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said the team has been grooming rookie Travis Homer to take over as the team’s primary kick returner.

On Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks receiver Tyler Lockett’s role was limited to just his duties as the team’s primary receiving option.

Typically, Lockett is also responsible for returning both punts and kicks, a role he has held ever since he was an All-Pro special teamer back in 2016, his rookie season.

However, after suffering a lower leg injury in Week 10 against the 49ers, Seattle decided to let David Moore return punts and rookie running back Travis Homer return kicks, giving Lockett a bit of a breather.

Homer in particular looked excellent on his one return opportunity, gaining 29 yards. It has been a long time coming to see him in that position, and coach Pete Carroll made it clear it won’t be the last time we see him back there.

“We’ve been grooming Homer for some time now,” Carroll said on Monday. “We’ve been really wanting him to take this spot for us and be a kickoff return guy. He got one good shot, and he just roared it up in there just like you like to see. I like the fact that he’s a running back and he has all of the skills and training to take care of the football and all that, and he really hits it. He had a 29-yard return and smoked it up in there really nice.”

The Seahawks talked a lot in the preseason about transitioning Lockett away from return duties in order to preserve his health, but it took a scary leg injury for them to actually make moves – a sign they may not have felt Moore and/or Homer were ready.

They both looked ready on Sunday though, and it’s possible they take those jobs and run with them for the rest of the season, freeing up Lockett to focus exclusively on the Pro Bowl caliber season he’s having as a receiver and limiting injury risk for the veteran.

Bruce Smith named Pro Bowl Legends captain

Former Buffalo Bills defensive end and Pro Football Hall of Famer, defensive end Bruce Smith, was named a Pro Bowl Legends captain for the 2020 Pro Bowl.

Former Buffalo Bills defensive end and Pro Football Hall of Famer, defensive end Bruce Smith, was named a Pro Bowl Legends captain for the 2020 Pro Bowl.

The NFL made that announcement this week. The league names four legends captains for the game, in total. One on offense and defense for the AFC and NFC, respectively.

Along with Smith, Terrell Davis, Darrell Green and Michael Vick will serve as legend captains. Davis is the other AFC captain with Smith.

Former Bills quarterback Jim Kelly was named a legends captain for last year’s Pro Bowl.

Terrell Davis will serve as a team captain for AFC at 2020 Pro Bowl

Former Broncos running back Terrell Davis will serve as one of the AFC’s team captains at the 2020 Pro Bowl.

The NFL announced Monday that former Denver Broncos running back Terrell Davis is one of four legends who will serve as team captains at the 2020 Pro Bowl.

Davis and former Buffalo Bills defensive end Bruce Smith will serve as captains for the AFC and former Washington Redskins cornerback Darrell Green and ex-NFL quarterback Michael Vick will serve as NFC captains.

Davis earned three Pro Bowl nods and three first-team All-Pro selections during his time with the Broncos and he earned league MVP honors after rushing for over 2,000 yards 1998. Davis helped Denver win back-to-back Super Bowls in the late 1990s and was named the MVP of Super Bowl XXXII.

A member of the NFL’s 1990s All-Decade Team and the Broncos’ Ring of Fame, Davis was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2017.

The Pro Bowl will be played on Sunday, January 26, 2020 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida. The game will begin at 1 p.m. MT and will air on ESPN, ESPN Deportes, ABC and Disney XD. Tickets start at $45.

Michael Thomas, multiple Saints players top-5 in Pro Bowl voting

The NFL opened up fan voting for the Pro Bowl, and New Orleans Saints players like Michael Thomas rank in the top five at their positions.

[jwplayer jcPYpmHE]

The NFL has opened up voting for this year’s Pro Bowl, and multiple New Orleans Saints players rank inside the top five at their positions. The Saints announced Monday that Michael Thomas has surpassed Dallas Cowboys star Amari Cooper to lead all wide receivers in votes earned, and that he ranks eighth in the entire NFL for fan voting.

Additionally, left tackle Terron Armstead, punt returner Deonte Harris, and punter Thomas Morstead each rank second-best at their position groups. Defensive end Cameron Jordan and kicker Wil Lutz are sitting in third for theirs, while Vonn Bell and Marcus Williams place fourth among strong and free safeties, respectively. Fullback Zach Line and right tackle Ryan Ramczyk have earned the fifth-most votes for their positions. Not a bad showing at all.

Fans can click this link to vote for their favorite Saints players on the 2020 Pro Bowl ballot. Obviously these Saints players would prefer to be practicing for Super Bowl LIV rather than participating in the Pro Bowl, but getting named to that exclusive list is great recognition. Be sure to help them out and cast your ballot.

3 Chargers who should make their first Pro Bowl in 2020

Chargers Wire’s Gavino Borquez lists three players that could make their first Pro Bowl appearance.

Despite having a 4-7 record, the talent on the Chargers would not suggest that. Loaded on both sides of the ball, Los Angeles had a league-high eight players make the Pro Bowl last year. This year should see some of the same members, but there are a few that are worthy of their first nod.

These three players very well could end up playing in Orlando, FL for the first time with the NFL’s best because of their strong play this season.

TE Hunter Henry

Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

Surprising enough, Henry has yet to make a Pro Bowl appearance since coming into the league in 2016. But injuries have hampered him throughout the course of it, thus holding him back from making it. But this year is different as Henry sustained an injury early in the season, and has played like he never missed a step.

Henry has caught 39 passes for 487 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 12.5 yards per reception and has caught 72.2% of his targets. He has either racked up 80+ yards or a touchdown in four of his six games back to the lineup. With five games remaining, there’s a good chance that we could see him with close to 55 receptions, 800 yards and two or three more scores.

Andy Lee, Zane Gonzalez both warrant Pro Bowl consideration

Gonzalez has made more field goals than anyone else in the league.

The Arizona Cardinals have not had a great season but do have some players who deserve recognition for their fine seasons. Defensively, there are three players who should get Pro Bowl consideration, even when the defensive unit, on the whole, is bad.

Two others also should be in the mix — kicker Zane Gonzalez and punter Andy Lee.

Gonzalez leads the NFL with 26 made field goals. He has hit 26-of-29, including 2-for-2 from 50 yards and beyond.

Lee is second in the NFL with a 48.8-yard punting average. He is eighth in net average.

If one of the two were more deserving, it would have to be Gonzalez. He has been fantastic. Aside from two missed field goals when Andy Lee was hurt, he has been nearly automatic. He has looked like the kicker he was at Arizona State when he won the Lou Groza award as the best kicker in the country.

Without many wins, they likely won’t get the attention they might merit, but they certainly are worthy of a Pro Bow nod.

Irish in the NFL: Quenton Nelson named to ESPN’s 25 under 25

Former Notre Dame Irish guard Quenton Nelson was named to ESPN’s all 25-under-25 team.

Former Notre Dame offensive lineman Quenton Nelson was the only offensive lineman named to ESPN writer Mike Clay’s 25 under 25 team – a list of the 25 best players in the league who are age 25 or younger.

Nelson has had an incredible start to his NFL career as the starting left guard for the Indianapolis Colts, where he was drafted sixth overall in the 2018 draft.

Nelson immediately took over as a starter for the Colts, and has played all but one offensive snap in the last two years.

He was a Pro Bowler and a first team All-Pro in his rookie season, but amazingly he’s playing even better in year two.

Here’s an excerpt from Clay’s article, where Nelson came in at No. 5.

The lone offensive lineman on our list, Nelson has been the driving force for the emergence of the Colts’ line as one of the league’s best units. The Notre Dame product has been on the field for all but one of Indianapolis’ offensive snaps since he was selected with the sixth pick of the 2018 draft. His 94.1% pass block win rate ranked 11th among guards during his rookie season and sits at 93.7% (11th best) this season.

Nelson was named to the Pro Bowl and was a first-team All-Pro during an outstanding rookie season, and he’s on track for significantly more award recognition over the next decade.

Nelson starred at Notre Dame from 2014-2017, and was named an All-American in his final season with the Irish. He has a chance to be one of the best offensive linemen in the league, and perhaps of all-time, if he keeps this pace up.
