Clemson in top 10 of USA TODAY Sports’ way-too-early 2025 college football rankings

The pieces are in place for a Tigers national championship run next season, USA TODAY Sports experts say.

The Clemson Tigers took a big step forward on the field in 2024.

The season didn’t end the way Tiger fans had hoped, but the team won 10 games and reached the College Football Playoff — expanded though it was — for the first time in four years.

Dabo Swinney won his ninth ACC title, and quarterback Cade Klubnik threw for 3,639 yards and 36 touchdowns.

USA TODAY Sports released their 2025 way-too-early Top 25 rankings this week after Monday’s national championship game. Clemson is ranked No. 7, one spot ahead of Notre Dame and one spot below No. 6 LSU. Clemson and LSU will meet in the season opener on Aug. 30.

Paul Myerberg and Erick Smith said of Clemson:

“The defending ACC champions will be expected to repeat in 2025 and go even deeper into the playoff. The offense will be led by veteran quarterback Cade Klubnik and an up-and-coming receiver corps. But RB is a question mark after projected starter Jay Haynes tore his ACL in the ACC title game. Defensively, look for Clemson to rebound under new coordinator Tom Allen after falling to ninth in the ACC in yards allowed per play this past season. The pieces are in place for a run at the national tile.”

Where Clemson ranks in 2025 Perfect Game Baseball Preseason Poll

There are big expectations from the Tigers in 2025!

The Clemson Tigers are coming off a strong 2024 college baseball season that saw them reach the Super Regionals for the first time in 14 years.

Clemson won its on-site regional by going 3-0 and defeating Coastal Carolina in an elimination game at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in June. The Tigers fell short in the Super Regional against a red-hot Florida Gators team in a game that became an instant classic.

Erik Bakich’s Tigers finished the year 44-16 overall and were ranked No. 8 in the final USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

On Monday, Perfect Game Baseball released its preseason Top 25 poll ahead of the 2025 season. Clemson was ranked No. 8, one spot behind the Texas Longhorns and one spot ahead of the Duke Blue Devils.

Two ACC teams ranked ahead of the Tigers: the Virginia Cavaliers at No. 3, and the Florida State Seminoles at No. 6. Both teams advanced to the College World Series in Omaha last season.

The Texas A&M Aggies were preseason No. 1 by Perfect Game, followed by the LSU Tigers at No. 2. After Virginia at No. 3, the Georgia Bulldogs and second-year coach Wes Johnson were ranked No. 4, with the defending national champion Tennessee Volunteers No. 5.

Clemson opens its 2025 regular season in the annual Shriners Children’s College Showdown at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas. The Tigers are scheduled to face Oklahoma State on Friday, Feb. 14 at noon ET, followed by the Arizona Wildcats on Feb. 15 (noon ET) and the Ole Miss Rebels on Feb. 16 (3:30 ET).

The Tigers’ home opener at Doug Kingsmore Stadium is scheduled for Feb. 19 against Presbyterian.

On3’s Jesse Simonton has Notre Dame football as a top-10 program ahead of the season

Do you think this is the right spot for the Irish?

As the season quickly is approaching, multiple outlets are starting to rank their top-25 teams, and Notre Dame football has been viewed favorably.

On3’s Jesse Simonton ranked his best teams ahead of the year, and the Irish are his No. 9 overall squad. It’s a good spot for Marcus Freeman’s team, even though this poll doesn’t count for much.

Perception will go a long way with the expanded College Football Playoff, part of the process will most likely revolved around how the committee feels others perceive the top teams. Having many outlets and writers ranking Notre Dame high helps in the long run.

For the most part, many people have the Irish as a top-10 team, which seems appropriate given the talent on the roster. Hopefully Notre Dame can live up to the expectations, finish the season inside the top-12 and make the CFP.

Phil Steele predicts Notre Dame will place sixth in Preseason AP Poll

Would this be a fair starting point?

We still have a little bit of time before the release of the 2024 Preseason AP Poll. That poll will give teams their starting points en route to a national championship. Even though it isn’t out yet, people already are making predictions for it.

Phil Steele claims to have correctly predicted the teams in the Preseason AP Poll 95.3% of the time in the 15 years he’s been doing so. So Notre Dame fans should be happy to know he’s predicting the Irish to enter the season as the sixth-ranked team in the nation.

On3 opted to break down Steele’s predicted top 10 and offered this take about where the Irish are at:

“This could be the highest preseason prediction in the AP Poll for the Fighting Irish. [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] went the way of a veteran QB in the portal, this time Duke’s [autotag]Riley Leonard[/autotag].

Still an Independent, Notre Dame can’t finish higher than No. 5 in potential CFP rankings. However, Freeman might be set up for his best year as coach in South Bend when it’s all said and done.”

Let’s hope they’re right. That’s the only thing that really needs to be added here.

Clemson ranks several spots below Florida State in projected preseason AP Top 25

Here’s where Clemson ranks in this preseason AP Top 25 projection.

Clemson and Florida State rank 1-2 as the projected best teams in the ACC in most post-spring Top 25 rankings ahead of the 2024 college football season.

How wide is the gap between the Tigers and ‘Noles, and which team is ahead of which (and why)? The question yields varying answers, depending on who you ask.

A recent projection of the preseason AP Top 25 poll from the folks over at College Football News shows Florida State ahead of Clemson — by a few spots.

The Seminoles crack the top 10 at No. 9 while Dabo Swinney’s team checks in seven spots below at No. 16.

It doesn’t mean that’s where the AP will rank the teams come August when it releases its actual preseason Top 25, but College Football News explains the reasons behind their projections this way:

“The goal here in the early part of summer with the preseason AP Top 25 Poll is to try getting it close and think like the voters do. This might be way too loose, but over the years 1) AP voters tend to build off the trends and momentum of the year before. 2) They like to go with teams with a quarterback they sort of know, and 3) there’s always someone new in the mix late.

How close were we last year with our projection of what it might be? We got Georgia (1), Michigan (2), and Tulane (24) right on. We were one spot off on Ohio State (AP preseason 3), Alabama (4), LSU (5), USC (6), Penn State (7), Florida State (8), Utah (14), Kansas State (16), North Carolina (21), and Texas Tech (26).”

Clemson finished at No. 20 in the final AP Top 25 poll a season ago. Florida State finished at No. 8.

Georgia is the projected preseason No. 1 with Ohio State at No. 2 in College Football News’ rankings.

Clemson ranks Top 10 in USA TODAY Sports post-spring rankings

A look at where Clemson ranks in USA TODAY Sports’ way-too-early post-spring Top 25 rankings.

USA TODAY Sports recently released their way-too-early Top 25 rankings following spring football games, and there’s promising news for Clemson fans.

The Tigers checked in at No. 10, the highest-ranked ACC team in the rankings.

Clemson is coming off a 9-4 season that ended with the team winning their final five games, including a thrilling 38-35 victory over Kentucky in the Gator Bowl that included a 28-point fourth-quarter comeback.

Heading into 2024, the Tigers are returning several key starters on both sides of the ball so there’s hope for a return to the College Football Playoff, especially now that it has expanded to 12 teams.

Per USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerberg and Erick Smith:

The Tigers are not a team that uses the portal, and this offseason was no exception. It’s hoped that the second year of the relationship between QB Cade Klubnik and offensive coordinator Garrett Riley bears more fruit after an up-and-down season in 2023. Klubnik has all the tools to lead and there are some young receivers looking to push for time. The pieces for an outstanding defense are in place. DB R.J. Mickens and two very promising DLs in TJ Parker and Peter Woods are potential stalwarts.

Klubnik will have an offense that features returning starters like running back Phil Mafah, receiver Tyler Brown, and tight end Jake Briningstool. With Will Shipley declaring for the NFL Draft and being taken as a surprise fourth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles, Mafah will be the featured tailback in Riley’s offense. Brown led the Tigers’ receiving corps last season as a freshman with 52 catches for 531 yards and four touchdowns.

The biggest addition to the offense is five-star receiver Bryant Wesco, the most highly-touted recruit on Dabo Swinney’s new roster. Wesco had a strong spring game that included an impressive over-the-shoulder catch from backup quarterback Trent Pearman in the first quarter.

On defense, Barrett Carter is one of the best linebackers in the nation and a two-time All-ACC selection. Carter opted to return for his senior season when many believed he could be a top-round NFL Draft pick. In three seasons at Clemson, Carter has notched 151 tackles (21 for loss), nine sacks and two forced fumbles.

Woods, the Tigers’ star defensive tackle, had an outstanding freshman season that included 26 tackles (2.5 for loss) and a forced fumble. Woods is positioned to be a star moving forward and he’s done nothing to dissuade people of the high expectations he’s set.

Clemson opens the season on August 31 against Georgia in the 2024 Aflac Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Bulldogs are No. 1 in USA TODAY’s post-spring rankings.

Where Clemson ranks in Athlon Sports’ Top 25 after signing day

A look at where Clemson ranks in Athlon Sports’ Top 25 rankings after National Signing Day.

The transfer portal is closed, National Signing Day has come and gone, and most college football teams by now at least have a relatively good idea of the state of their rosters going into the 2024 season.

Clemson finished its 2024 recruiting class in the early part of the year by adding four 4-star recruits: offensive linemen Jaylan Beckley and Brayden Jacobs, as well as defensive linemen Ari Watford and Isaiah Campbell.

Those signings gave the Tigers’ recruiting a big shot in the arm going into the season after an up-and-down 9-4 campaign in 2023.

With National Signing Day complete, Athlon Sports released its post-NSD Top 25 rankings.

in those rankings, Clemson is ranked No. 16.

“A defense that held opponents to 21.1 points a game in ’23 should remain a strength with linebacker Barrett Carter and linemen Peter Woods and T.J. Parker anchoring this group. However, returning to the top of the ACC is dependent on the offense taking a step forward in the second year under coordinator Garrett Riley. The Tigers averaged only 23.6 points a game in ACC contests last fall,” Athlon writes.

Defending ACC champion Florida State is the highest-ranked team in Athlon’s rankings, one spot above Clemson at No. 15.

Louisville and NC State are the only two other ACC schools to crack Athlon’s recent Top 25 rankings.

College football: Which preseason top-10 team is most likely to flop?

Which is the most likely to disappoint?

College football is now just 11 days away as the countdown is getting ever-so-near reaching single digits.  The preseason AP Poll was released on Monday with Notre Dame checking in 13th overall.

We’ll ignore that the last time Notre Dame was ranked 13th by the AP to start a year they wound up winning the national championship.

Instead, we’ll focus on the top-10 of those rankings.

Did you know – over the last 21 years only once did at least one preseason top-10 team in the AP Poll not end up unranked.

2016 was the last time it happened to Notre Dame.

Last year Oklahoma, Baylor, and Texas A&M all fell victim.

Which of the preseason top-10 teams is it most likely to happen to in 2023?

Where Clemson ranks in Joel Klatt’s preseason top 25 rankings

Joel Klatt ranks Dabo Swinney and the Tigers as a top-ten team heading into the 2023 college football season.

The first edition of USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll was released today, giving us our first look at an official top 25 rankings heading into the 2023 college football season.

With the release of the Coaches Poll, Fox Sports college football analyst Joel Klatt had his preseason top 25 rankings released as well. Like the Coaches Poll, Clemson landed in the top 10, ranking No.9 in the country. Here is what Klatt had to say about the Tigers heading into 2023.

Clemson has a quarterback that I believed in a year ago and probably should have started more games. DJ Uiagalelei was struggling, and it should have been Cade Klubik that came in. I understand he struggled in that bowl game against Tennessee, but let’s be honest, bowl games that aren’t in the CFP …  there’s not a lot of credence to me in those bowl games. They are so far removed from what bowl games used to be that it’s hard for me to evaluate what went on in the Orange Bowl. Having said that, you get Klubnik. He’s got his best offensive player in [Will] Shipley back. They should be pretty good on the offensive line. And then the most important piece, and this is the one that I think has flown under the radar – Garrett Riley is their new offensive coordinator. We know what Garrett Riley just did at TCU with Max Duggan, and Kendre Miller, and Quentin Johnson. They are going to be better on offense, and this is what they’ve desperately needed over the course of the last few seasons. So here, Garrett Riley comes in. The next time a Riley-coached offense has a bad year at quarterback, please let me know, because I’ve never seen it. Garrett Riley and Lincoln Riley – they understand how to move the ball down the field. I’m in on Clemson. They should be better on defense, they won the ACC a year ago, they’ve got their best games, or toughest games, at home, a place they rarely ever lose over the last five or six years. I’m in on Clemson.

Klatt being in on Clemson is a great sign, as he has become one of the most respected college football analysts over the past few years. A big difference between Klatt’s rankings and the Coaches Poll is Florida State’s standing.

On the Coaches Poll, Clemson was ranked one spot below the Seminoles. In Klatt’s rankings, the Tigers are one spot ahead of the Seminoles, who sit at No.10.

I understand the hype. They had a six-game win streak to end the season. I like their returning quarterback a lot. They have built over the course of the last three years under Mike Norvell. Last year seemed like a breakthrough. I’m in on Florida State. They are in the top 10. They are No. 10 because they play Clemson at Clemson. They haven’t beat Clemson … it’s been a long time.

While they bring back their QB and while they won six in a row a year ago to finish the year, that win streak was against some terrible teams. When you look at what they did when the season was still in the balance, I do remember a bit of a losing streak in the middle of the year. I remember being incredibly fortunate against LSU in Week 1 in Brian Kelly’s first game at LSU. They don’t get the benefit of that doubt. LSU is gonna beat them. Clemson is gonna beat them. They are gonna be 2-2 to start the year. They may win 10 games. They may go on to have a solid year. I just don’t see them winning the ACC, and I don’t see them beating those two teams.

Bold words from Klatt, Clemson fans should be thrilled with Klatt’s assessment of both programs. The 2023 season could be a massive one for the Tigers if they can put everything together.

Week 4 against FSU may be the most important game of Clemson’s season.
