Jaxson Dart’s fumbles at Senior Bowl practices are just part of his process

Jaxson Dart has caused a lot of buzz at Senior Bowl practice, but partly for his fumbles. That shouldn’t be a concern on his scouting report:

When you are just beginning to learn something for the first time, there’s always going to be room for hiccups. Some of the world’s greatest athletes have all experienced a time where they are forced to adjust to something new. The early struggles during this adjustment period, shouldn’t create much panic for onlookers.

For Ole Miss quarterback and New Orleans Saints draft prospect Jaxson Dart, it’s just a part of the process.

After an impressive senior season down in Oxford, Dart has quickly followed up his rise with some exceptional days during Senior Bowl week. Dart’s play has many now wondering whether or not he should be considered as a top-ten selection in this year’s draft. As impressive as Dart’s arm has been over this past week, there have been some concerns about his ball security, specifically under center.

Dart fumbled at least three times under center to start the week. From the outside looking in, many will see this as very concerning for such an experienced player. However, when you take a deeper dive into Dart’s collegiate career, something like this should come with little surprise.

In Dart’s last two seasons at Ole Miss, he took a total of 943 snaps for the Rebels. Only nine of which were taken under center.

Going back even further, to get an idea of his exposure to under center I even checked out his high school tape. If you take a look at Dart’s high school highlight reels, you will find that he was in the gun just about 99% of the time. It doesn’t tell the entire story, but definitely gives some perspective.

In addition to his inexperience, Dart’s also receiving snaps from multiple different players and all for the very first time. Not a single center, or offensive lineman at that, on the American Team has past experience with the quarterback.

Putting all this together, it’s quite easy to see why there could be speed bumps along the way.

As a former Division 1 quarterback prospect at the FCS level, I’m able to share a similar experience with Dart in terms of the limited reps and early troubles in my first camp.

Taking a snap under center is much more than just saying “hike,” taking the ball and being on your way. In fact there are a multitude of factors that go into receiving a snap successfully.

One of the underrated aspects of taking a snap is your relationship with the center. Every center has their preference for hand placement, whether they prefer the quarterbacks hands closer to their midsection or just below their backside. This most of the time depends on whether the center likes full arm extension or just a slight bend when sending the snap. Without the proper relationship here, comes the risk for fumbles at the line.

Another that is very important is the top hand pressure of the quarterback. When the quarterback places his hands under the center, he places his throwing hand on the top and his non-throwing hand on the bottom. Before and while receiving the snap, the quarterback is to place an ample amount of pressure underneath the center’s back side allowing him to move with the center post-snap. If this doesn’t happen, when the center goes to move after the snap the quarterback could end up missing the ball. Ensuring this also indicates your readiness to the center to receive the ball as well.

The last thing here also plays a factor into ball security, and that’s thumb placement by the quarterback. There are two ways that quarterbacks will connect their thumbs under center. The first and most common way is to cross their thumbs completely creating an “X” with the two. The other way is to place the thumb of your throwing hand into the groove that connects the palm and the thumb of the opposite hand. This aspect of receiving a snap will come more as a preference for quarterbacks, with neither being more effective than the other.

From being in these same cleats as Jaxson Dart in terms of the quarterback position, there are so many factors that are at play when it comes to ball security under center. Many of which will come with time on task and finding a level of comfortability. Dart’s talent speaks for itself, throwing for 81 touchdowns and almost 12,000 yards over his collegiate career. His work ethic has also never been questioned, being characterized as “contagious” by his former teammates.

With an inspiring performance in Saturday’s Senior Bowl game, Dart will be able to be this talk to bed and hopefully push himself even further into the top-ten conversation by week’s end.

Star DB limited in Chiefs practice due to knee injury

One of the #Chiefs’ most valuable defenders was limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday due to a knee injury.

The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to rest their starters in Week 18 after clinching the No. 1 seed for the AFC playoffs with a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day.

The much-needed rest period could prove crucial to Kansas City’s viability as playoff contenders as the Chiefs endeavor to get healthy ahead of their eventual Divisional Round postseason matchup.

Star defensive back Trent McDuffie is among the players who will stand to benefit the most from Kansas City’s off-time as he nurses a knee injury that limited his participation in practice on January 1 and 2.

The extent of McDuffie’s injury is unclear, but it is unlikely that he would have been in the Chiefs’ starting lineup in Week 18 regardless of his injury status.

Expect the former Washington Husky to work his way back to full participation in the coming weeks as Kansas City prepares for another grueling playoff run through the end of the month.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid reveals mindset for matchup vs. Broncos: ‘Make sure you stay sharp’

Kansas City #Chiefs head coach Andy Reid reveals mindset for matchup vs. Denver #Broncos: ‘Make sure you stay sharp’ | @EdEastonJr

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke to reporters on Monday for his weekly Zoom press conference. He shared his mindset for this Sunday’s low-stakes regular season finale against the Denver Broncos.

“When I first became a head coach, and the first time I had a chance to get in the playoffs, I’ve learned some things since then,” said Reid. “I know that you’ve got to keep yourself relative with practices and make sure you stay sharp, and you don’t want to get too far away from it in the playoffs. Everything gets a little bit faster in the playoffs every level you go up. It’s single elimination, and you have to make sure your game is at its peak each time you play.”

The Chiefs set a new franchise record for regular-season wins and have clinched the top seed in the conference. Although their star players won’t likely be in Sunday’s game, the next few weeks of practice preparation will be essential.

“They were able to get some rest, which I thought was important,” said Reid about his team after three games in eleven days. “I’m not recommending that you do that every year so, but down the road, I think we’ll be okay from it because of the rest that we gained here so, and that we also have the bye (week) coming up where, you know, there’s a chance that guys get a day or two off.”

The Chiefs will see several backups and practice squad players play significantly on Sunday.

Multiple Commanders dealing with illnesses ahead of Week 16 showdown vs. Eagles

While other players are now sick, Tyler Biadasz will be back vs. Eagles.

On Sunday morning, the Washington Commanders were surprised to learn that center Tyler Biadasz had woken up with an illness. The Commanders immediately added him to the injury report and worked him out before the game against the New Orleans Saints. Unfortunately, Biadasz wasn’t able to go, and Washington missed him.

While the Commanders won, the offensive line wasn’t the same without Biadasz. Quarterback Jayden Daniels was sacked a season-high eight times, and the running game, outside of Daniels, never got going.

Good news: Biadasz will be on the field Sunday when Washington hosts the red-hot Philadelphia Eagles.

“Absolutely, I’m playing, I’m playing,” Biadasz said about Sunday. “You can’t get me out of this game.”

While Biadasz will return, Biadasz’s illness has spread through the locker room. On Thursday, right guard Sam Cosmi and tight end John Bates missed practice due to illness. With Zach Ertz in the concussion protocol, Bates will play even more against the Eagles, while Cosmi is Washington’s top offensive lineman. Cosmi also missed Wednesday’s practice.

Sunday is still a few days away, and there’s a good chance Cosmi and Bates will be fine. However, now the concern will be the illness making its way through the entire locker room.

Bills’ Dalton Kincaid has positive injury sign ahead of Lions matchup

Bills’ Dalton Kincaid has positive injury sign ahead of Lions matchup

There was positive news regarding Buffalo Bills’ second-year tight end Dalton Kincaid ahead of Week 15’s matchup with the Detroit Lions.

Kincaid was able to practice without a red non-contact jersey at Friday’s workout. His full participation at practice did come with a sleeve on his left leg, but he looked comfortable moving around:

Kincaid has missed the last three games after hurting his knee in a win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 10.

The Bills went 2-1 in his absence as Dawson Knox became more involved in the offense.

So far this year, Kincaid has reeled in 34 catches for 356 yards and 2 touchdowns. Although he is officially listed as questionable for Week 15, it looks like he will be able to see the field and continue to build on his sophomore campaign.

Chiefs WR Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown returns to practice

Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown returned to practice with the #Chiefs on Friday ahead of Kansas City’s Week 15 matchup against the #Browns.

Veteran wide receiver Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown returned to practice with the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday for the first time since he sustained a shoulder injury during the defending Super Bowl champions’ first preseason game in August.

The Chiefs opened Brown’s practice window to return from their injured reserve list, but the team announced that he will not be active for Kansas City’s Week 15 matchup against the Cleveland Browns.

Brown signed with the Chiefs as a free agent after Kansas City’s victory in Super Bowl LVIII earlier this year.

He is expected to provide Patrick Mahomes with a dynamic deep threat in the passing game and should be one of the top receivers on the Chiefs’ depth chart when he returns from Kansas City’s injured reserve list.

Fans should expect Brown to make his regular-season Chiefs debut at some point during Kansas City’s brutal late-season stretch, with three games set to be played between December 15 and 25.

Commanders coach Dan Quinn on expectations for Marshon Lattimore

Commanders coach Dan Quinn shared some insight on Marshon Lattimore’s practice plans and set expectations for the former Pro Bowler against his old team:

For the first time since the Washington Commanders acquired Marshon Lattimore via trade with the New Orleans Saints, things are finally trending toward the Pro Bowl cornerback making his debut against his former team this weekend.

Lattimore began practicing fully this week with no limitations, putting him on track to suit up for Sunday’s matchup. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn shared his thoughts on potentially adding Lattimore into the lineup.

“It’s a big deal, to add a player of this caliber after the trade deadline, it just doesn’t happen that often,” Quinn told reporters Wednesday. He also made it a point that they will be cautious with the player, making sure that he’s fully equipped to get back on the field after dealing with a nagging hamstring injury for the last month.

“We’ll take it through the whole week. We’re not going to miss one step with him and the practicing and hitting all the markers. If it trends that way good, then (he will) go,” Quinn said.

Quinn knows exactly how impactful a player of Lattimore’s caliber can be, having coached against him twice a year during his tenure as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Lattimore and the Saints went 2-5 against Quinn with the shutdown corner erasing Julio Jones and most other receivers the dirty birds threw at him. Now he’s returning to New Orleans as a visitor.

Pro Bowl OL missed Chiefs’ practice session on Wednesday

A Pro Bowl OL wasn’t able to work out with his teammates at the Kansas City #Chiefs’ practice session on Wednesday.

The Kansas City Chiefs may be without 2021 Pro Bowler D.J. Humphries when they face the Cleveland Browns in Week 15 after he missed the defending Super Bowl champions’ practice session on Wednesday due to an injury.

Humpries was signed by Kansas City on November 25 after Wanya Morris and Kingsley Suamataia failed to provide Patrick Mahomes adequate protection from their spots at the left tackle position earlier in the season.

Though Humphries was the Chiefs’ starting left tackle when they faced the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 14, he suffered a lower-body injury that forced Morris back into action on Sunday Night Football.

Fans should closely monitor Humphries’ status in the coming days as Kansas City prepares for its matchup against the Browns on December 15.

If Humphries isn’t able to play on Sunday Chiefs head coach Andy Reid will need to get creative to ensure that Mahomes has plenty of time in the pocket.

Saints sign veteran quarterback after Derek Carr injury

The New Orleans Saints signed veteran quarterback Ben DiNucci after Derek Carr’s injury, rounding out the depth chart for practice this week:

The New Orleans Saints have signed veteran quarterback Ben DiNucci after an injury to Derek Carr, DiNucci announced on social media. A seventh-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys back in 2020, he started one game in his rookie year and has since spent time with the Denver Broncos and Buffalo Bills, as well as the XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons.

Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi characterized Carr’s injury as a “week to week” concern, but this development would suggest he’s unlikely to practice this week. Adding DiNucci to the rotation should keep drills moving on schedule with three able-bodied quarterbacks.

Still, we should expect either Spencer Rattler or Jake Haener to get the starting nod for Sunday’s game with the Washington Commanders.

First look: Pro Bowl OL spotted at first practice with Chiefs

#Chiefs fans got their first look at Pro Bowl OL D.J. Humphries during Kansas City’s first practice session of Week 13.

The Kansas City Chiefs recently signed free agent offensive tackle D.J. Humphries this week to shore up the depth of their front five.

Humphries took his first reps with the Chiefs during Kansas City’s practice session on Tuesday ahead of the defending Super Bowl champions’ Week 13 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Though it is unclear if or when Humphries will earn a starting role with the Chiefs, his experience should prove to be a valuable asset for Kansas City’s young linemen, who will be able to hone their craft with the 2021 Pro Bowl selection at their sides.

Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com shared a video of Humphries working out with his new teammates on Tuesday:

While Humphries finds his niche in the Chiefs offense, second-year lineman Wanya Morris is expected to maintain his status as Kansas City’s starting left tackle.

Stay tuned to see if Humphries will be available for the Chiefs’ tilt against the Raiders.
