Crimson Tide LB coach leaving for Florida Gators DC job

Crimson Tide LB coach on the move after one month in Tuscaloosa

After arriving in Tuscaloosa just a little over a month ago, Alabama Crimson Tide linebackers coach, Austin Armstrong, is back on the move. Armstrong will be joining the Florida Gators as their defensive coordinator after their former coordinator, Patrick Toney, left for the NFL and will be joining the Arizona Cardinals staff.

Armstrong will be the youngest defensive coordinator at the Power Five level and will have plenty of room to improve the Gators’ defense. In 2022, Toney’s lone year in Gainesville, the Gators finished No. 97 in total defense out of 130 eligible teams.

Alabama still has Kevin Steele to lead the defense, but a lot of people surrounding the Alabama program were excited about Armstrong’s future in Tuscaloosa. Armstrong had spent some time in Athens with Kirby Smart as a quality control coach and is one of the bright young minds in football.

Five takeaways from Notre Dame’s blowout win over Michigan State

The Irish needed this one and got it.

Notre Dame was in search of its first quality win of the season. It needed one after a disappointing loss to St. Bonaventure that it never really was in. As it turned out, playing a shorthanded No. 20 Michigan State team in the final ACC-Big Ten Challenge was just what the doctor ordered as the Irish won, 70-52, to clinch the challenge for the ACC. In fact, they never trailed aside from the Spartans scoring the game’s first basket.

The Irish (6-1) jumped out to a big lead in the first half and never looked back. Although there wasn’t as much offense in the second half, there was just enough for the Irish to maintain their dominance over the Spartans (5-3), who were missing Jaden Akins and Malik Hall.

Here are five takeaways from this big victory:

1 burning question for each Power Five conference entering the 2022 season

After a genuinely wild offseason, we have some questions.

After what has felt like an offseason filled with nonstop drama, we’re so close to actual, honest-to-god football being played.

This offseason has been dominated by topics such as the transfer portal, name, image and likeness benefits, conference realignment and coaching changes at a number of traditional powers. It’s been a constant deluge of talking points.

It goes without saying that as we approach kickoff in the 2022 season, we have some questions. It may be a while before we have a large enough sample size of games to answer many of them, but with talking season coming to an end, here is the main burning question surrounding each Power Five conference.

Stream live college football games every week this season from conferences across the country on ESPN+.

Deion Sanders talks about potential Jackson State-Alabama matchup

Deion Sanders spoke about the possibility of a future matchup against the Crimson Tide, but that Jackson State isn’t ready quite yet.

Deion Sanders is entering his third year with the Jackson State football program, and to say he has turned things around would be an understatement. During the Tigers 2021 campaign, Sanders led them to an 11-2 record, the team’s first winning season since 2013.

Not only are the Tigers succeeding on the field, but off of it as well. They have dominated the recruiting game and landed the No. 1 overall recruit in the country, Travis Hunter. Sanders and Jackson State have everything going for them.

Yet, when asked about a potential matchup with the Crimson Tide Sanders said, “We’re not ready for that, we’re not into sacrificing our kids for a check.”

Sanders elaborated and said that he still needs time to improve his offensive line and defensive line before he can truly compete. He believes that the skill positions are similar, but the biggest difference is the line play on both sides of the ball.

If Jackson State and Sanders continue on this path, there may be a day when we see the two legends lined up across the sideline.

Notre Dame wants $75 million in media rights fees to stay independent

Is the Irish’s independence worth this much?

For over 30 years, Notre Dame and NBC have gone together like peanut butter and jelly. Now, the future of the Irish’s independence might depend on the arrangement between the two sides. Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports is reporting that Notre Dame is seeking at least $75 million in its next media rights deal with its longtime broadcast partner. Notre Dame currently earns $22 million every year under its current deal, which expires in 2025.

The only way NBC reportedly would agree to such an arrangement would be if it also took on broadcasts of a Power Five conference. With the SEC’s future firmly with ESPN and the Big Ten about to announce a lucrative deal with Fox, the Big 12 has emerged as the likely frontrunner for NBC. The Big 12’s current media deal also has an expiration year of 2025.

Whether Notre Dame ends up remaining independent or not, it better move quickly. We are at a tipping point in college football, which now is being driven almost, if not entirely by media deals. The last thing the Irish want is to be left behind in all of this dealing and thus possibly put its future as a legitimate contender at risk.

Best of luck to everyone involved with this decision. It may not be pretty, but it has to get done.

Where does LSU’s Brian Kelly stand in these Power 5 coach rankings?

Cornhuskers Wire ranked Kelly seventh among active Power Five coaches.

Coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] may still be looking for that elusive national title, but that’s about the only feat he hasn’t accomplished in his three decades spent as a head coach.

After making four stops since 1991 — most recently a 12-year stint at Notre Dame (where he’s the all-time leader in wins) — Kelly is the third-winningest active head coach in the FBS ranks behind Nick Saban and Mack Brown.

Our colleagues at Cornhuskers Wire recently undertook the herculean task of power ranking all 65 current Power Five coaches, and it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Kelly stands near the top of that list at No. 7. That puts him at fourth in the SEC behind Saban, Kirby Smart and Jimbo Fisher.

All three of those coaches have national championships, so it’s understandable that Kelly will sit behind them until he can earn one of his own. The only coaches who rank higher than Kelly without titles are Ryan Day (No. 6) and Lincoln Riley (No. 4).

Kelly could have retired as arguably the greatest coach in Fighting Irish history, but he instead chose to take a risk and make the jump to the SEC, where he clearly feels he will have the resources to finally take a team all the way. LSU fans will hope that pays off, and given the fact that its last three coaches have all won national titles, Kelly has big shoes to fill.

Where does Scott Frost rank among Power Five coaches?

Where do you think Scott Frost should rank among the Power Five coaches?

There are 65 programs in power five college football (including Notre Dame). That means there are 65 power five coaches (including Notre Dame), so where does Scott Frost stack up among that group. CBS Sports released a list of the Top 65 coaches (including… can the Irish pick a conference already), and boy, is it a doozy.

I want to be clear that I did not make this. Do not forget that I did not make this list. According to the list makers

“A panel of our experts turn in their ballots with a simple mission: rank the 65 Power Five coaches from best to worst. There are no parameters for how they should be ranked. One could rank strictly on records or accomplishments. Another could rank on what they think these coaches will accomplish or how they have lived up to expectations. There are no rules, only rankings.”

It gives you a little bit of an idea of why the following list is… interesting. Who’s first, who’s last, and where does Scott Frost land. Scroll below to find out.
