Oklahoma makes final four teams in the running for Eastern Washington transfer Tanner Groves

Oklahoma has found themselves in the final four schools in the running for Eastern Washington transfer forward Tanner Groves.

Oklahoma basketball has a lost a lot in terms of players departing from the team since the end of last season in the transition from former head coach Lon Kruger to new head coach Porter Moser.

But, one very key addition could be on the way for the Sooners. On the same day both Alondes Williams and De’Vion Harmon entered the transfer portal, Eastern Washington transfer forward Tanner Groves has Oklahoma in his final four schools, per Stadium’s Jeff Goodman.

Groves burst on the scene to many with his big performance in this year’s NCAA Tournament against Kansas as it became clear that the redshirt junior would be an interesting candidate as someone who could make the jump to a bigger program.

Interestingly, another team to make the final cut for Groves is Oklahoma’s biggest rival in Texas under their new head coach in Chris Beard. Both Beard and Moser are just beginning their tenures in the Red River rivalry, but they already have a big time battle on their hands to try and land the services of the Eastern Washington big man.

Groves seems like a home run pickup for Moser and the Sooners should they land him, given the severe lack of players underneath right now on the roster. His 17 points and 8 rebounds per game would be a very welcomed addition to Oklahoma’s hopes for competing in the stingy Big 12 conference next season.

Sooners Wire will continue to provide updates on Groves as they become available.

Oklahoma offers four-star center Jonas Aidoo out of Charlotte, North Carolina

Oklahoma basketball offered four-star center Jonas Aidoo from Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday morning.

Oklahoma basketball is in the early stages under the new coaching regime led by Porter Moser and things are already moving along. On the same day he was officially introduced, Moser landed the commitment of three-star point guard Alston Mason. Now, on Saturday, the Sooners have officially put out an offer to four-star center Jonas Aidoo from Liberty Heights Athletic Institute in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Aidoo has already received a medley of other offers with Kansas and West Virginia being the other Big 12 programs in the running to land him. Some other notable offers include Alabama, Marquette, Houston and Tennessee. He was actually previously committed to the Golden Eagles, but decommitted back in March when coach Steve Wojciechowski was let go.

Big men underneath has been an Achilles heel for Oklahoma in recent seasons, so Moser finding a way to get ahold of a strong one right out of the gates would be a pretty big win. Aidoo would be a very nice pickup should they manage to land him.

K.T. Turner is heading to Oklahoma as an assistant coach

According to CBS Sports, Porter Moser will be hiring K.T. Turner to his staff. Turner was an assistant for Shaka Smart this past season.

The coaching carousel has hit the Big 12 hard, even with the NCAA Tournament still going on. Both Texas and Oklahoma saw their head coaches leave the program, with Shaka Smart taking the Marquette job and Lon Kruger retiring after a decade in Norman.

Chris Beard left Texas Tech for Texas, while Oklahoma went to the Missouri Valley Conference to hire Porter Moser of Loyola Chicago. Fresh off a Sweet 16 appearance with the Ramblers, Moser will be taking one of Texas’ former coaches with him to Norman.

According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, Moser will be hiring K.T. Turner to his staff. Turner was the head assistant for Shaka Smart during the 2020-2021 season.

Ironically enough, Turner served as Texas’ head coach for one game this season against Oklahoma on Jan. 26 when Smart was out due to COVID-19 protocols. The Longhorns ended up losing in the final minute, 80-79.

Before Texas, Turner spent seven seasons as the associate head coach at SMU. He has connections to the state of Oklahoma, playing at Oklahoma City University from 2001-2002. He graduated in 2003.

Oklahoma adds former Texas assistant K.T. Turner to coaching staff

Oklahoma basketball added former Texas assistant coach K.T. Turner to the coaching staff on Monday, according to multiple reports.

The first addition to the Oklahoma basketball coaching staff under new head coach Porter Moser has been made as the Sooners are bringing in former Texas associate head coach K.T. Turner on as an assistant.

Turner spent last season with the Longhorns under Shaka Smart, even serving as the interim coach for one game (ironically against Oklahoma) when Smart was out due to COVID-19 protocols, after spending the previous seven on the staff at SMU.

Known as a good recruiter with great ties to the region, Turner looks to be a very nice addition as an asset to Moser to help him recruit in a region he has not spent the bulk of his career in. On paper, this looks like a very nice hire. Someone who does seem to like it is De’Vion Harmon, who took a page out of Lincoln Riley’s book with the eyeballs emoji tweet just after it was reported.

While it is not clear what the exact role Turner will have on the staff, it seems reasonable to think he may be the lead assistant under Moser similar to what Carlin Hartman was for Lon Kruger in recent seasons. Hartman left to join the staff at UNLV a week ago.

Sooners Wire will continue to provide updates on the ever-changing Oklahoma basketball program as the offseason continues to roll on.

Porter Moser, athletic director Joe Castiglione release statements as hiring made official

New Oklahoma basketball coach Porter Moser and OU athletic director Joe Castiglione released statements Saturday morning on the new hire.

Oklahoma has landed their new head basketball coach as after it was reported yesterday, it was officially announced by the school Saturday morning that Loyola Chicago’s Porter Moser would be making the leap to the Big 12 to take over the Sooners.

A hot commodity on the coaching market who had interest from numerous places, Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione found a way to land Moser in a fashion somewhat similar to the way he got Lon Kruger to come aboard a decade ago. It wasn’t a slam dunk move, it took some convincing given Moser’s options on the table and the lengths by which Loyola Chicago was willing to go to keep him – but Castiglione got his man.

With the hiring made official, Moser released his first statement as the new head coach of the Sooners:

“Our family is so excited and honored to join the Sooner family,” said Moser. “Joe Castiglione has a reputation for building championship programs at the University of Oklahoma. I’ve always said there are reasons why you win. If you look at the standards that the programs at Oklahoma have set, there are reasons why they’ve won. The coaches, infrastructure and community are all championship caliber. You just want to be a part of that. To play in a premiere league like the Big 12 and be a part of this championship culture excites me.

“I have so much respect for Coach Kruger. He’s one of the icons of our profession. The fact that he was at Oklahoma shows that OU covets character. He’s everything that young coaches should aspire to. He’s all about winning the right way. I look forward to continuing that blueprint and continuing the blueprint we had at Loyola: winning the right way.

“I’m thrilled to join a program that is so focused on culture, people and excellence. I’m looking forward to diving in and building relationships with our players, the other coaches and the OU community.”

Castiglione also offered some words on the hiring:

“We are absolutely thrilled to announce and welcome Porter Moser as our next great OU head coach,” said Castiglione. “As we dug deep into the backgrounds of candidates, his attributes, acumen and record of success totally aligned with what we were seeking. He’s a purposeful and proven leader who prioritizes positive culture, accountability, academics, player development, innovation, transparent communication and a holistic approach to the student-athlete experience.

“Porter is also a bright, energetic and tireless recruiter who will similarly engage all stakeholders related to the future success of Oklahoma men’s basketball. His wife Megan, daughter Jordan and sons Jake, Max and Ben complete an all-star team and are emblematic of the family environment and values he wants to carry on within our program. We can’t wait to get them to campus.”

Moser’s former team also had a very classy response to the news on Twitter as well:

University of Oklahoma President Joseph Harroz Jr. also chimed in:

“We’re so happy to welcome Coach Moser and his family to the OU family,” said OU president Joseph Harroz Jr. “He has had storied success at Loyola Chicago both on the court and in his positive impact in the lives of his student-athletes. It’s a thrill that he will bring that same energy and excitement to Sooner Nation.”

Now that Oklahoma has their new head coach, the work can begin at reconstructing a roster that has been ravaged already in the early stages of the offseason. How Moser handles that in terms of landing transfers and possibly luring some players back will be the first big task for him in his Sooners tenure.

Sooners Wire will continue to provide updates all throughout what has been an unforgettable offseason for Oklahoma basketball.

Brother of MSU basketball great Denzel Valentine expected to take over Loyola-Chicago head coaching job

Drew Valentine, the brother of MSU great Denzel Valentine, is now expected by many to become the head coach of Loyola-Chicago.

In some shocking news on Friday, it was revealed that long-time Loyola-Chicago head coach Porter Moser would be leaving the small school that he has led to unprecedented success to become the head coach at Oklahoma.

This leaves a vacancy open that actually touches Michigan State in a few ways due to the fact that Drew Valentine, brother of Spartan legend Denzel Valentine, might be next in line for that head coaching position after spending the last four seasons on Moser’s staff at Loyola as an assistant.

Chicago Sun Times contributor Joe Henricksen said on Friday that he does ‘fully expect’ Drew Valentine to be named head coach of the Ramblers:

College basketball insider Jeff Goodman also expects Valentine to take the role:

Aside from the obvious connection to Denzel, this affects the Spartans in another way, albeit one that has only been speculated on. Many MSU fans had hoped that Drew Valentine might come to Michigan State as an assistant coach. He had previously been on Izzo’s staff as a graduate manager after playing college ball for Oakland.

Valentine has started to get a lot of buzz in the college coaching community for his work with Loyola over their extremely productive four seasons during his tenure. Those hopes now seem to be up in smoke after Moser’s departure.
