Seahawks DT Poona Ford, CB Tre Brown share same reaction to Bobby Wagner news

Not everyone is thrilled about the fresh start, though.

The Seattle Seahawks decided to blow the whole thing up and rebuild after all. Today they agreed to trade their franchise quarterback Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos and have also informed middle linebacker Bobby Wagner that he’s being released.

Together, the two moves mean a new era of Seattle football is beginning. Not everyone is thrilled about the fresh start, though. Defensive tackle Poona Ford and cornerback Tre Brown both shared the same reaction on Twitter after the news broke about Wagner being cut.

The NFL is a business and a brutal one and the players know that, but it’s hard to imagine the locker room as a whole is happy right now.

Wilson’s whole toxic positivity act may have grown tiresome but he unquestionably made them a more competitive team. Meanwhile, Wagner was universally beloved and respected.

If the Seahawks let Quandre Diggs walk too, there’ll be trouble.

Seahawks: Ranking the 8 most important players entering the last year of their contract

Let’s focus on the eight most important names that the team has to make a decision on this year.

The Seahawks have a couple dozen players who are about to become free agents when the new league year begins March 16. That means soon decisions will have to be made on whether or not to re-sign pieces like left tackle Duane Brown, free safety Quandre Diggs and defensive tackle Al Woods, among others.

The work for general manager John Schneider won’t end there, though. In addition to preparing for the 2022 NFL draft and a deep free agent class, there are several more key performers who are in line for a contract extension as they approach the end of their current deals.

According to Over the Cap, Seattle has 31 players entering the last year of their contracts. Most of them are on the bottom end of the depth chart and relatively replaceable. Let’s focus on the eight most important names that the team has to make a decision on this year.

Seahawks: 3 defensive positions to target in the 2022 NFL draft

Here are three defensive positions the front office should be targeting on Days 2-3.

These 2021 Seattle Seahawks are finished as far as the playoffs are concerned. While we expect them to break their losing streak and perform better down the stretch, it’s also time to look ahead to next offseason.

Yesterday we examined a few positions on offense they should prioritize in next year’s NFL draft. Their defense has improved a ton since the start of the year and there aren’t as many leaks on this side of the ball. Still, there are a few spots where they could use help. Here are three defensive positions the front office should be targeting on Days 2-3.

Seahawks: Highest and lowest PFF grades for Week 2 loss to Titans

Here are the top and bottom five graded players for the Seahawks in Week 2.

After an unusually calm and stress-free victory Week 1, the Seahawks reverted to their normal dramatic form on Sunday. Seattle held a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter against the visiting Titans, but squandered it thanks to a combination of getting run over by Derrick Henry, being unable to hold the ball for longer than a minute and stupid penalties.

We have already gone over a few studs and duds from the overtime loss. Now let’s take a deeper look at the grades from Pro Football Focus. Here are the top and bottom five graded players for the Seahawks in Week 2.

The Atheltic deems Texas ex Poona Ford a breakout player for the Seahawks

Poona Ford wasn’t much of a sought-after player in the 2018 NFL Draft, but his performance in the league has teams wishing they had him.

Former Texas defensive tackle Poona Ford entered the league with a major chip on his shoulder. He was undersized and went undrafted in the 2018 NFL draft.

The Seattle Seahawks took a chance on the former Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year and it has paid dividends for both parties involved.

Ford’s playing time has increased every year with Seattle. The former Longhorn appeared in all 16 games last season and recorded career highs in tackles (39), sacks (2), and tackles for a loss (8). His consistent play and improvement garnered a two-year contract extension with Seattle.

It also gained the notion of being most likely breakout player for the Seahawks throughout the 2021 season.

The Athletic’s staff writers each picked a player from every NFL team that they feel is poised to breakout this upcoming season. Michael-Shawn Dugar selected Ford and took it a step further by mentioning how Ford has the potential to become one of the league’s best at his position. “Ford, 25, has the potential to be one of the game’s top defensive tackles,” Dugar said.

It’s certainly high praise for a young undrafted player, but Ford has taken his opportunity and ran with it.

Bryan Mone signs exclusive-rights tender, re-joining Seahawks

Third-year defensive tackle Bryan Mone signed his exclusive-rights tender two days ago, making him a Seattle Seahawk for the 2021 season.

On April 19,  defensive tackle Bryan Mone signed the exclusive-rights tender the Seattle Seahawks offered him, marking another addition to their defensive line.

During the 2020 season, Mone recorded 0.5 sacks, nine tackles (three solo), a tackle for loss, a safety, and two quarterback hits in 10 games. The third-year DT will join a defensive line that features Carlos Dunlap, LJ Collier, and Poona Ford, to give a few examples.

Mone will likely serve as a rotational piece if he is needed, as defensive linemen are plentiful for the blue and green. We will see how much playing time he gets in the fall when the season comes.
