Colts player of the game vs. Texans: WR T.Y. Hilton

The Ghost returned in Week 13.

With a wild finish at NRG Stadium over the Houston Texans (4-8), the Indianapolis Colts move to 8-4 on the year and are now tied with Tennessee atop the AFC South.

Sunday’s big win could not have been possible without a big performance from the veteran receiver T.Y. Hilton.

Hilton provided another huge game against Houston, this time totaling eight catches for 110 yards and a touchdown. That now makes two touchdowns in as many weeks for the 31-year-old.

His touchdown came early in the game as he moved across the field untouched and connected with Philip Rivers for the 21-yard score. Hilton looked like his former self today and really led the Colts’ young receiving corps. Hopefully, he can build on this success as the regular season winds down.

The Colts travel to Vegas to take on the Raiders next week, in a game that could go either way. While the offensive woes continued for Indy in the second half, they showed real signs of efficiency in both the pass and run game. They will need Hilton and other veteran players to step up and make plays for this team to have postseason success.

Darius Leonard is Colts’ player of the game vs. Titans

Darius Leonard is our player of the game.

In possibly the most important game of the year for the Indianapolis Colts, they struggled on defense out of the gate and never quite recovered. The 45-26 loss put the Tennessee Titans atop the AFC South and put the Colts in a fight for the wild card.

Despite the loss and lackluster performance on defense, linebacker Darius Leonard had a huge day on defense. With 14 total tackles, one tackle for a loss, one sack, and a pass defended, Leonard showed that he is the leader of this defense even when things don’t go their way.

Without Bobby Okereke, who was inactive with an ankle injury, the Colts linebackers seemed to struggle to stop the run as Derrick Henry ran for 178 yards and three touchdowns. Hopefully, the Colts as a team can get healthy and fix some issues that the Titans exposed.

With favorable matchups down the stretch, the Colts can right the ship and possibly still win the division. Leonard will need to keep showing his leadership on the defensive side of the ball and keep being the tackle machine he has been his entire career.

Tress Way named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week

With an average punt distance of 50.4 yards against the Bengals, plus three pinned inside the 20, Way is highly deserving of this NFC honor.

[jwplayer C66fN5qY]

After another stellar game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, which resulted in a win for Washington, punter Tress Way has been named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week by the NFL, thanks to his remarkable punting that was yet again put on display.

During the game, Way had a total of five punts that went for an average of 50.4 yards, three of which were pinned inside the 20-yard line, and one that was downed at the 2.

This is the third time that Way has been named the Player of the Week in his career. It’s clear that Washington’s punter could be well on his way to another Pro Bowl nod this year as well.

Colts’ player of the game vs. Packers: QB Philip Rivers

Rivers finished with 288 yards and three touchdowns.

In what was one of the most exciting games of the year, the Indianapolis Colts (7-3) come out on top with a huge victory over the Green Bay Packers (7-3).

Quarterback Philip Rivers was monumental in securing the win, overcoming adversity, and making some big plays, especially in the second half.

Rivers finished with 288 yards and three touchdowns. While the stat line may not jump off the page, Rivers was able to do all that while dealing with a toe injury that forced him to sit out some plays in the fourth quarter.

He came back and was able to make some huge throws on third and fourth downs to help the Colts drive down the field.

Indy stays atop the AFC South at 7-3 and looks to hold off the Tennessee Titans next week at home. Hopefully, Rivers’ toe is not a cause for concern because if he plays like he did today, the Colts can make some noise down the stretch.

Matt Prater named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week after 59-yard game-winner

Detroit Lions kicker Matt Prater has been named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week after his 59-yard game-winner in Week 11.

Detroit Lions kicker Matt Prater has been named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week after his 59-yard game-winner in Week 11 against the Washington Football team. In addition to the walk-off kick, Prater also connected from 53 and 37, going 3 of 3 on the day.

This is the 12th time Prater has been recognized for this award, 7th as a Lion, and 1st time in his career he has won it twice in one season — he was also won this award in Week 3 after a game-winning kick over the Arizona Cardinals.

Prater’s 59-yard field goal created a series of accomplishments, including:

  • Tied a Lions franchise record for field goal distance — a record Prater set in 2016.
  • It’s the 5th time he has connected from 59 or more yards — the most in NFL history.
  • It marked the 7th time in his career he has kicked multiple field goals from at least 50-yards — an NFL record.
  • Prater is now 22-22 on game-tying or go-ahead field goals in the 4th quarter inside of the 2-minute warning over his career — going 16-16 in regulation and 6-6 in overtime.

Colts’ player of the game vs. Titans: RB Nyheim Hines

Nyheim Hines has a big day.

In a big-time statement win, the Indianapolis Colts (6-3) showed everyone in prime time what they are capable of with a 34-17 win over the Tennessee Titans (6-3).

This contest had tremendous playoff implications and now puts the Colts atop the AFC South. This win could not have been possible without the spectacular performance from the birthday boy, Nyheim Hines.

The Colts’ revolving door in the backfield has led to a new No. 1 back each week, and against Tennessee it was all about Hines. He totaled 70 yards on the ground with a rushing touchdown that came after a shanked punt in the third quarter.

He also added five catches for 45 yards and a receiving touchdown as well. Hines’ ability to skate by defenders and get to the second level made him the go-to guy in this game. He and Philip Rivers have connected a lot in recent weeks, which is a connection that could be deadly going forward.

The Colts showed tonight that their depth and durability can allow they to beat a team a number of ways. With the Packers coming to Indy in week 11, the Colts will need Hines and others to step up and continue this success.

Bills Wire’s Week 9 Player of the Game: QB Josh Allen

QB Josh Allen is Bills Wire Player of the Game.

What a day for our three-time Bills Wire Player of the Game, quarterback Josh Allen. The third-year QB helped lead the Bills to play their best game yet, against a Super Bowl contender in the Seattle Seahawks.

While anything and everything clicked for the Bills as a unit in Week 9, with the Bills defense making light work of the current MVP front-runner, the fact that Allen out-dueled his counterpart in Russell Wilson. It was a statement win for Allen, a statement win for the defense, and well… a statement win for the Bills to put a little respect when others speak their name.

Allen finished with one of his better stat lines, completing 31 of his 38 passes on the day, with 415 yards by air and three passing touchdowns. He also added a touchdown run as well.

While this is an excellent win that the Bills can build off of, they now gear up to play another feisty NFC West team that has also one – upped the Seahawks recently, in the Arizona Cardinals.

Colts’ player of the game vs. Ravens: LB Darius Leonard

Darius Leonard continued his excellent play in Week 9.

In a game filled with miscommunication and frustration, the Indianapolis Colts (5-3) fell to the Baltimore Ravens (6-2), 24-10. This highly anticipated AFC matchup was filled with controversial calls and the Colts failing to move the ball on offense.

One player who shined and fought through adversity was Darius Leonard. After finishing with 15 total tackles (13 solo), including one tackle for a loss, Leonard seemed to be all over the field.

His play of the game came in the third quarter when DeForest Buckner stripped Gus Edwards deep in Colts territory and Leonard recovered the fumble. After an injury scare in the third quarter, Leonard came back and continued to lead this defense that struggled in the second half.

The Colts travel to Tennessee Thursday night for a huge AFC South matchup. With the Titans coming up twice in the next three weeks and the Packers sandwiched in there too, the season could very much be in the balance of the next few games.

Patrick Mahomes becomes 5th Jets opponent to win Player of the Week

To say the Jets have been an easy matchup for opponents to exploit in 2020 would be an understatement.

[jwplayer DAaKdsxo-ThvAeFxT]

The Jets have been an easy matchup for players to exploit in 2020.

New York is the NFL’s only winless midway through the season. It has been stagnant on offense and extremely underwhelming defensively, affording opponents the opportunity to have big games on a weekly basis. As expected, Patrick Mahomes did just that last weekend, throwing for five touchdowns en route to AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

And he is not the only one who has taken hardware home at Gang Green’s expense.

Mahomes is the fifth Jets opponent to win Player of the Week. Colts cornerback Xavier Rhodes earned AFC Defensive Player of the Week after picking Sam Darnold off twice in Week 3. Broncos kicker Brandon McManus followed suit in Week 4 by going three-for-three on field goals and making all four of his extra-point attempts. Kyler Murray became the first NFC player to get the best of the Jets for the award, throwing for 380 yards and a touchdown to go along with a score on the ground in Week 5. Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes took home Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording six tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble in Week 7.

It’s no secret that the Jets are the worst team in football at this point in the season, but the fact that five players in eight weeks have taken advantage of the matchup to perform better than any other player in their conference is staggering, to say the least. Frankly, it perfectly sums up New York’s overall ineptitude in 2020.

The ice-cold Patriots come to town on Monday night, but squaring off against the Jets typically has the same effect as a dose of Robitussin. Considering New York’s recent history against New England, it would come as no surprise if a Patriots player breaks out with a player of the week-caliber performance in Week 9.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes awarded AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors

This is Mahomes’ second weekly NFL award this season.

This one was never in doubt.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has been named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week following his record-setting performance against the New York Jets in Week 8.

Mahomes passed completed 73.8% of his passes for 416 yards and five touchdown pass to no interceptions. According to NFL Research, Mahomes became just the eighth player since at least 1948 with at least 400 passing yards, at least five passing touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 70-plus completion percentage in a single game.

This is Mahomes’ fifth career AFC Offensive Player of the Week award and his second award of the 2020 NFL season. He earned his first award of the season following the Week 3 win against the Baltimore Ravens on “Monday Night Football.”

This marks the second time in Mahomes’ career that he’s earned two weekly awards in a single season. The last time he earned two weekly awards was his 2018 MVP-winning season, which was also his debut season as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback. He earned back-to-back recognition in the first two weeks of the season.

If Mahomes continues at his current pace for the 2020 season, he could be looking to earn more weekly honors as the Chiefs pursue another Super Bowl title.

In Week 7, Byron Pringle earned AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors for his 102-yard kick return touchdown. This is the first time this season where the Chiefs have seen two players earn weekly honors in back-to-back weeks.
