NBA Twitter reacts to Dallas trading for PJ Washington: ‘Interesting move for the Mavericks’

Here’s how NBA Twitter reacted to the Mavericks trading for PJ Washington.

The Dallas Mavericks are trading Grant Williams, Seth Curry, and a first-round pick to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for PJ Washington, per Adrian Wojnarowski.

Washington and Williams were two of the players who were rumored to be traded by the deadline.

Here’s how NBA Twitter reacted to the latest big trade in the Association.

PJ Washington: Four trade destinations that make sense

The Charlotte Hornets have been underwhelming this season, failing to contend for a Play-In Tournament spot and seemingly taking steps backward. With Michael Jordan transitioning into a minority owner role and Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall starting to put their fingerprints on their franchise, the Hornets might want to start moving players not deemed part of their future.

With the Hornets trading Terry Rozier and focusing on LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller, and Mark Williams, roster uncertainty prevails. PJ Washington, who signed to a $48 million deal, might be movable as performance has dipped a bit this season, with a fluctuating role amid team personnel changes. Washington is only 25 years old and is under contract for the next few seasons so he could be a player a team takes a flier on. Additionally, Washington’s contract is front-loaded and its cap hit descends to $14,152,174 in the final year.

Let’s take a look at four possible destinations for him.

Should the Boston Celtics thirst for PJ Washington? One NBA analyst thinks so

Citing Robert Williams III’s recent return to the injury report, Buckley suggests that the club might regret not doing more to improve their big rotation.

It may no longer be permitted for teams to trade players for the remainder of the 2022-23 NBA season, but according to Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley, if it were still allowed, the Boston Celtics ought to covet Charlotte Hornets big man PJ Washington. The onetime Kentucky standout has been linked to the Celtics in the past and could fill a need for youth in the frontcourt once Al Horford begins to lose a step.

Citing Robert Williams III’s recent return to the injury report, Buckley suggests the club might regret not doing more to improve its big rotation. Washington’s “versatility would shine at both ends,” per the B/R analyst, with the Hornet swingman offering “an alternative to paying Grant Williams this summer since both are heading to restricted free agency.”

“He works as both a physical 4 or a small-ball 5, and depending on what the night calls for, he can contribute points, rebounds, assists, and 3s,” he adds.

The ask envisioned by Buckley? Reserve guard Payton Pritchard and a lottery-protected 2025 first-round pick, should Charlotte not be primed to pay the big man this summer.

Of course, this is all hypothetical given the collective bargaining agreement would not allow any such deal in the world we live in, but B/R has a solid target in mind for Boston given Washington’s skills and Boston’s needs.

Assessing low-cost big and wing trade targets for the Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics are reportedly on the hunt for some frontcourt depth help on the trade market ahead of the 2023 NBA trade deadline.

The Boston Celtics are reportedly on the hunt for some frontcourt depth help on the trade market ahead of the 2023 NBA trade deadline, and there is no shortage of analysts ready with proposals of who the Celtics should consider going after to such an end.

Boston is reportedly looking for low-cost help as a stipulation, with the team ill-disposed to moving most heavy-minutes players in their rotation. With the best record in the NBA at present, that certainly seems a prudent path, but it can also be said that this team’s depth still needs a bit of an upgrade if the Celtics want to give themselves a real shot at an NBA title. The Athletic’s Jared Weiss and Jay King put together a trade deadline primer in particular with some interesting targets proposed by the duo that could be what Boston might be after.

Let’s dive into the various options they mention we haven’t addressed much elsewhere and their potential fit with the Celtics squad.

Four realistic targets for the Boston Celtics’ 2023 NBA trade deadline

Who are reasonable trade targets given the financial and structural issues the team needs to consider?

The Boston Celtics are rumored to be looking into potential trade targets in the frontcourt and on the wing ahead of the 2023 NBA trade deadline. But given the state of the club’s draft asset collection and the team’s overall tax bill — not a minor issue — it seems unlikely the Celtics will make a major move to find such players.

And with the best record in the league, that makes a world of sense. But that also isn’t necessarily a reason not to improve the team via trades if the right candidates are available through such a route.

But who are reasonable trade targets given the financial and structural issues the team needs to consider?

NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg recently revealed four such players he thinks make sense for Boston — whether a bigger deal for Jakob Poeltl, something more reserved such as Naz Reid (our favorite), splitting the difference with PJ Washington or a wing like Alec Burks.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear his takes on a recent episode of “Celtics Post Up”.

Could the Hornets’ PJ Washington make sense as a Boston Celtics trade target?

One prominent NBA analyst thinks so.

The Boston Celtics currently possess the best record in the NBA, and despite some dings to their frontcourt rotation, appear poised to return to the 2023 NBA Finals to compete for the ever-elusive Banner 18. As such, they are not likely to make any major moves unless they are the sort of player that could help the team beyond just this season.

But with this upcoming NBA draft looking to be full of potential star talent, teams struggling early might look to sell off such players’ rights cheaply to get in the hunt of a top pick in that draft, and Heavy’s Sean Deveney thinks the Celtics ought to be keeping tabs on Charlotte Hornets forward PJ Washington in case they are open to dealing the Kentucky alum.

“I don’t know why Charlotte doesn’t value PJ Washington, but I think (he) would be a great fit,” said Deveney on a recent episode of the “Celtics Lab” podcast.

“He can play both positions, he’s young and you’re going to have to pay him,” added the Heavy editor, referencing his looming restricted free agency.

But with Al Horford set to also hit unrestricted free agency this offseason with no guarantee Boston will be willing to match what he might command for the second time in recent years, a case is there to pull the trigger on a deal that Deveney believes will cost two first-round picks.

Hornets season preview: Is LaMelo Ball ready to become an All-Star?

The Charlotte Hornets are a team that can potentially exceed expectations, especially if LaMelo Ball is able to further improve his game.

The Charlotte Hornets are a team that can potentially exceed expectations, especially if LaMelo Ball is able to further improve his game.

Ball is one of the most exciting young players in basketball and the sky is the limit when it comes to his career. But there are still some questions about if that will translate to winning for the Hornets. For example, will he have enough talent around him to make a splash in the postseason?

Below, check out our preview for the 2021-22 Hornets campaign.

NBA fans had jokes after P.J. Washington played 44 minutes without scoring a single point

Great cardio.

The Charlotte Hornets and Phoenix Suns played an entertaining game on Sunday afternoon that ended with a Suns 101-97 overtime win, but plenty of fans came away from that game focusing on who didn’t score.

Hornets forward P.J. Washington is essentially mirroring his statistical output from his rookie season at 12.2 points per game. But on Sunday, he played an entire 44 minutes of basketball and didn’t score at all.

It wasn’t for a lack of opportunities either. Washington took seven shots and two free throws. And still, he put up zero points in FOURTY-FOUR MINUTES.

That exceeded the 28 scoreless minutes from the Tony Snell meme, so NBA fans understandably had jokes about that performance.

Despite the poor offensive showing, Washington did grab 12 boards and have a couple blocks. But still, that’s some solid cardio.

NBA players react to Jake Paul knocking out Nate Robinson

NBA players past and present reacted on Saturday night to Jake Paul knocking out former Slam Dunk champion Nate Robinson.

On Saturday night, Triller hosted a pay-per-view that featured the headline boxing match between Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. For sports fans, though, the more interesting fight preceded the main event as former NBA Slam Dunk champion Nate Robinson squared off against popular YouTube vlogger and personality Jake Paul.

Unfortunately for Robinson and basketball fans, it was a short-lived fight as he was knocked out with a little under 90 seconds left in the second round. Robinson had been wobbled in the first round and never recovered before a right hook from Paul ended the fight, knocking Robinson out cold on the mat.

NBA players all over Twitter reacted in kind with a mixture of shock and laughter, including LaMelo Ball’s new Hornets teammate PJ Washington.

Former sharpshooter and NBA champion Nick Young jokingly kicked Robinson out of the NBA fraternity, which led to more reactions from Washington and Miles Bridges.

The Hornets weren’t the only ones watching the fight though as all sorts of NBA players past and present chimed in.

Hornets teammates react to Charlotte drafting LaMelo Ball with No. 3 pick in 2020 NBA Draft

After LaMelo Ball was selected third overall by the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday, his new teammates took to social media to react.

In drafting LaMelo Ball with the No. 3 pick of 2020 NBA Draft, the Hornets selected one of the most popular prospects in recent years. Ball’s following on Instagram totals over 5.7 million followers with a reach larger than some NBA teams.

That following has led to him being one of the most well-known prospects among both fans and his peers. Despite taking a route that saw him leave college after his sophomore season and make stops in professional leagues in both Lithuania and Australia, Ball’s popularity only grew.

Included in that following were a handful of Ball’s new teammates on the Hornets as PJ Washington, Malik Monk and Miles Bridges all took the opportunity to welcome him to the league on Twitter Wednesday night.

Interesting, Ball and Washington do have some history together as the two played one another in a preseason friendly ahead of their 2016-17 high school seasons. At the time, Ball was a sophomore at Chino Hills and Washington was a senior at Findlay Prep.
