Detroit Red Wings at Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Detroit Red Wings at Pittsburgh Penguins odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Detroit Red Wings (14-11) visit the Pittsburgh Penguins (19-10) Wednesday in the 1st game of their 3-game season series. Face-off from PPG Paints Arena is set for 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Red Wings vs. Penguins odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Red Wings beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 7-4 on Dec. 21 to end their 6-game losing streak. Detroit scored 4 goals in the 3rd period of that win.

Ville Husso (12-6-0, 2.72 GAA, .912 SV%) vs. Casey DeSmith (4-6-0, 2.83 GAA, .914 SV%)

In Husso’s last 2 starts he has 8 total goals while making 72 saves. That includes an overtime loss to the Capitals that saw Husso spending 65 minutes on the ice with an SV% of .905 in that loss.

In DeSmith’s last start Dec. 18 at Carolina he allowed 3 goals on 29 shots with an SV% of .897. The veteran has been a solid backup for the Penguins.

Red Wings at Penguins picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 3, Red Wings 2

Moneyline

LEAN PENGUINS -170.

The Penguins are simply the better team in this game. Neither team has shown that they are great, but the Penguins have performed better in a tougher division than the Red Wings.

Puck line/Against the spread

LEAN RED WINGS +1.5 (-150)

This game should be close as both teams could use a win here and should be playing hard. The Penguins should win, but the Red Wings will put up a fight and coming off a huge win before the break I expect them to keep this game close.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 6.5 (-120)

This is your best bet for this game. Both of these teams do have capable offenses, but in a game that should be a close battle I don’t see either team putting up a high amount of goals. This is a game that will see some scoring but won’t see either team eclipsing 3 goals.

Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Islanders odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Islanders odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Pittsburgh Penguins (19-9-5) travel to meet the New York Islanders (19-14-2) at UBS Arena Tuesday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Penguins vs. Islanders odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Penguins are coming off a 4-3 loss in overtime at home against the Carolina Hurricanes before the holiday break, and Pittsburgh is 1-1-1 in the past 3 games following a 7-game win streak.

This is the first of 4 regular-season meetings between these Metropolitan Division foes. The Penguins won 2 of the 3 meetings last season, including a 1-0 win Nov. 26, 2021 at New York in the lone meeting at UBS.

The Islanders picked up a 5-1 win over the Florida Panthers Friday night on the Island, a rare win after entering play just 1-3-2 in the previous 6 contests.

Penguins at Islanders odds

Provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 2:25 p.m. ET.

  • Moneyline (ML): Penguins -130 (bet $130 to win $100) | Islanders +110 (bet $100 to win $110)
  • Puck line (PL)/Against the spread (ATS): Penguins -1.5 (+180) | Islanders +1.5 (-250)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 5.5 (O: -120 | U: +100)

Penguins at Islanders projected goalies

Tristan Jarry (15-3-4, 2.67 GAA, .920 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Ilya Sorokin (11-11-1, 2.37 GAA, .925 SV%, 3 SO)

Jarry has been red-hot lately, allowing 3 or fewer goals in 11 of his past 12 starts. He is an impressive 7-0-1 with a 2.25 GAA and .931 SV% in 8 starts in the month of December.

Sorokin stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced in a 5-1 win over the Panthers prior to the holiday break, stopping a personal 0-6-1 skid across his previous 7 starts and 8 appearances. He has been the victim of a lack of offensive support lately, however, including a hard-luck 1-0 loss in a shootout at Colorado Dec. 19.

Penguins at Islanders picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 3, Islanders 2

Moneyline

The PENGUINS (-130) are the lean, as Pittsburgh has just been more consistent lately. Jarry will match Sorokin in the net, and the Pittsburgh offense will be able to provide a little more support in this hotly contested game inside the Metro.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Islanders +1.5 (-250) will cost you 2 1/2 times your potential return, and that’s a little too expensive if you’d like a little insurance on the home team.

New York has been shut out twice in the past 7 games, and it’s feast or famine on offense. The Isles have just been too inconsistent lately.

PASS.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (+100) is a low number but a good play at even-money with 2 solid backstops at both ends.

The Under is 5-1-2 in the past 8 games overall for the Penguins, while going 6-1 in the past 7 games inside the division.

While the Over is 4-1-1 in the past 6 games overall for the Islanders, the Under is 3-1-1 in the past 5 at home, and 5-2 in the past 7 following a win.

Stars at Penguins projected goalies

Jake Oettinger (11-3-3, 2.52 GAA, .915 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Igor Shesterkin (12-3-3, 2.76 GAA, .919 SV%, 1 SO)

Oettinger has posted back-to-back wins over the Detroit Red Wings and Ottawa Senators, and he is 3-1-0 with a 2.51 GAA and .909 SV% with a shutout in 5 starts in December.

Jarry has been on fire lately, winning 8 of his last 9 starts, including a perfect 4-0-0 mark with a 2.24 GAA and .933 SV% in December. The last time he lost in regulation was Nov. 5 at home against the Seattle Kraken.

Stars at Penguins picks and predictions

Prediction

Stars 3, Penguins 2

Moneyline

The STARS (+110) have just been finding a way to win lately, whether it’s with good goaltending, timely scoring, or both.

The Penguins (-130) have been red-hot lately, too, but this is a team which is just 5-11 in the last 16 games against teams with a winning overall record.

In addition, Pittsburgh is playing the 3rd game in the last 4 days, and it is 1-6 in the last 7 in the 3rd game of a 3-in-4 situation.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Stars +1.5 (-230) will cost you more than 2 times your potential return, and there is just no value playing a large number like that, especially over the long term. If you feel Dallas will win, just play it straight up.

PASS.

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (-120) might be the best play on the board here, as Oettinger and Jarry are each playing very well.

The Under is 5-2 in the last 7 games overall for the Stars, while going 15-6-4 in the last 25 games against teams with winning overall mark.

The Under is 6-2-1 in the last 9 games overall for the Pens, while cashing at a 5-2 clip in the last 7 games at home, too.

The Golden Knights kicked off a 4-game road trip with a 3-2 shootout win against the Columbus Blue Jackets Monday. It snapped a mini 2-game skid. The Under has cashed in each of the past 4 games for Vegas.

The Penguins were on the short end of a 3-2 overtime setback against the visiting Carolina Hurricanes Tuesday. Pittsburgh cashed its 4th consecutive Under, too.

Pittsburgh received bad news Wednesday, as the team announced veteran defenseman Kris Letang will be out indefinitely after suffering his second stroke in less than a decade.

Golden Knights at Penguins projected goalies

Logan Thompson (12-4-0, 2.44 GAA, .921 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Tristan Jarry (8-3-3, 2.91 GAA, .914 SV%, 1 SO)

Thompson allowed just 2 goals on 28 shots in the 3-2 shootout victory against the Blue Jackets Monday. He was 8-2-0 with a 2.88 GAA and .909 SV% over 10 starts in November. He has won all 5 of his starts against Eastern Conference teams this season, too.

Jarry was edged out Tuesday by the Hurricanes, allowing 3 goals on 39 shots, slipping to 4-1-3 with a 2.82 GAA and .914 SV% with a shutout across 8 November starts. He has won his past 3 starts against Western Conference foes.

Golden Knights at Penguins picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 3, Golden Knights 2

Moneyline

The PENGUINS (-120) are a decent play at home against the Golden Knights, who have just the win against the Jackets in their last 3 games.

While the VGK has won 8 of its last 9 road games, it is just 2-5 in the past 7 meetings against the Pens. The favorite is 7-1 in the past 8 in this series, too.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Golden Knights +1.5 (-260) will cost you over 2 1/2 times your potential return if you want a little insurance and don’t trust Vegas straight up. It’s too expensive, so if you like VGK just bet it straight up.

AVOID.

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (-115) is the lean here, as both teams have cashed the Under in each of their last 4 games.

The Under is also 4-1 in the past 5 home games for the Pens while going 6-2 in their last 8 against Western Conference teams.

The Penguins picked up a 4-1 win at the Washington Capitals Wednesday, stopping an 0-6-1 skid. Prior to the victory over the Caps, the last win for Pittsburgh had been way back on Oct. 22 at the Columbus Blue Jackets. The victory also snapped a streak of 8 straight games allowing 3 or more goals.

Penguins at Maple Leafs projected goalies

Tristan Jarry (4-3-1, 3.38 GAA, .903 SV%) vs. Erik Kallgren (1-1-3, 2.99 GAA, .890 SV%)

Jarry coughed up 3 goals on 28 shots in a loss against the Seattle Kraken Saturday last time out in a 3-2 setback, and he is winless in his past 4 outings dating back to Oct. 22 in Columbus.

Kallgren was on the short end of the 4-3 OT loss against Vegas Tuesday, yielding 4 goals on just 20 shots. He is 1-0-1 with a 2.15 GAA and .912 SV% in 2 starts and 3 appearances overall in November.

Penguins at Maple Leafs picks and predictions

Prediction

Maple Leafs 4, Penguins 3

Moneyline

The MAPLE LEAFS (-155) are moderate favorites and worth playing at this price.

Toronto has won 6 of its last 8 at home against Pittsburgh, the home team has cashed in 6 of the past 7 meetings, with the favorite going 5-2 in past 7 in the series.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Penguins +1.5 (-190) will cost you nearly 2 times your potential return, and that’s too much risk for not enough reward.

Pittsburgh is 1-6-1 across the past 8 games, and 5 of those losses are by 2 or more goals.

PASS.

Over/Under

OVER 6.5 (-117) is a good play here.

The Over has cashed in 15 of the past 21 games for Pittsburgh while going 19-7 in its last 26 games against Eastern Conference opponents dating back to last season.

There is some risk here, as the Under is 10-4-1 in the past 15 games overall for the Leafs and is 5-0 in the last 5 between these squads in Toronto, so be careful.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Pittsburgh Penguins (4-6-2) head to D.C. to take on the Washington Capitals (6-6-2) Wednesday at Capital One Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (TNT). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Penguins vs. Capitals odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

This is a battle of 2 playoff teams that have gotten off to rough starts. Pittsburgh has lost 7 in a row, and 5 of them have been by multiple goals. C Sidney Crosby (6 goals, 8 assists) and C Evgeni Malkin (5 goals, 7 assists) are doing their thing, but the Pens aren’t getting much production from their bottom 2 lines.

Capitals LW Alex Ovechkin has 8 goals on the year as he is now 106 goals from tying Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record. “The Great 8” has goals in 3 straight games and 5 of his last 6. The Caps are playing without LW Carl Hagelin (eye), RW T.J. Oshie (lower body), RW Tom Wilson (knee) and D John Carlson (lower body) as they try to navigate an assortment of injuries.

Penguins at Capitals projected goalies

Tristan Jarry (4-3-1, 3.38 GAA, .903 SV%, 0 SO) vs. Darcy Kuemper (4-5-1, 2.42 GAA, .919 SV%, 1 SO)

Jarry has lost 4 straight starts, and he has allowed 19 goals in the process. He allowed just 8 goals in his previous 4 starts to open the year. He had trouble with Washington last year, going 1-2-1 with a 3.96 GAA and .884 SV % in 4 starts.

On the flip side, Kuemper has been solid through 10 starts, but he has lost 3 in a row as well. His 2.42 GAA is better than it was last year when he won the Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche, but the Caps are scoring just 2.86 goals per game. Kuemper was 2-0-0 with a 3.02 GAA and .929 SV% against Pittsburgh last season.

Penguins at Capitals picks and predictions

Prediction

Capitals 3, Penguins 2

Moneyline

I think Washington sneaks this one out as its goalie is playing far better, and he can draw from the home crowd. The Capitals have won 3 of the last 4 meetings, and the underdog has taken 4 of the last 5 between the teams.

Take the CAPITALS (+105).

Puck line/Against the spread

The puck line is priced out of range with the Caps +1.5 (-220). With Jarry struggling the way he is, CAPITALS OVER 2.5 TOTAL GOALS IN REGULATION (-155) seems like a lock.

Over/Under

There are some Over trends in this matchup, but neither team is playing at the level they expect offensively. The Over is 13-3 in the last 16 meetings and 4-1 in the last 5 in Washington.

However, Pittsburgh is 5-5 O/U over the last 10, and Washington is 4-6. Pittsburgh has just 15 goals in its last 7 games, and Washington has just 13.

LEAN UNDER 6.5 (-108).

Pittsburgh Penguins at Buffalo Sabres odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Buffalo Sabres odds and lines, with NHL expert picks and predictions.

The Pittsburgh Penguins (4-4-2) and Buffalo Sabres (6-3-0) meet Wednesday. The opening faceoff at KeyBank Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (TNT). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Penguins vs. Sabres odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Pittsburgh suffered a 6-5 overtime loss against the visiting Boston Bruins Tuesday. The Penguins are 0-4-1 in their last 5 games since starting the season 4-0-1. Defense and goaltending have been problems: the Pens have allowed 4.80 goals per game over that losing skid.

The Sabres routed the Detroit Red Wings 8-3 Monday and are 2-1-0 so far on a 4-game homestand ending with this contest. Buffalo has top-10 scoring averages at both ends of the ice, scoring 4.1 goals per game (2nd) and allowing just 2.8 goals per game (10th).

Penguins at Sabres projected goalies

Casey DeSmith (0-2-1, 2.97 GAA, .913 SV%) vs. Craig Anderson (3-0-0,  1.66 GAA, .946 SV%)

DeSmith is making his 4th start of the season. He’s a 5-year NHL veteran who has found significantly more success at home (.925 SV% career) and in the latter months of the season.

Anderson is off to a terrific start. G Eric Comrie was between the pipes in Buffalo’s last game; Anderson was last in the net Saturday when he stopped 23-of-26 shots in a 4-3 Sabres win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Penguins at Sabres picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 4, Sabres 3

Moneyline

The Pens are scuffling, but at some point — maybe soon — they may be considered a solid play. On the back half of this home-road double, that’s not likely the case here.

Buffalo’s wins of late have been supported by solid puck-possession numbers. If the tag on the Sabres hits +110 or so, they are a decent short underdog. Otherwise, PASS.

Puck line/Against the spread

The last two series meetings last season went past 60 minutes, and 4 straight Pittsburgh-Buffalo games have been decided by 1 goal. With that and the above in mind, the price on the SABRES +1.5 (-250) is a solid one. However, it’s likely only a consideration for larger bankrolls.

Over/Under

Both powerplays have been operating at average levels while drawing a solid number of looks, and both teams have been creating a good number of high-danger chances.

With this goaltending match-up and with Pittsburgh struggling on the penalty kill (70.6%, 28th in the NHL), there is VALUE ON THE OVER 6.5 (-115).

The Pittsburgh Penguins (4-2-1) and Vancouver Canucks (1-5-2) meet Friday at Rogers Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Penguins vs. Canucks odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Penguins opened the current 5-game road trip with a 6-3 win at the Columbus Blue Jackets, but they have had much less success north of the border. The Pens lost 6-3 at the Edmonton Oilers Monday and 4-1 at the Calgary Flames Tuesday.

The Canucks scored an entertaining 5-4 road win at the Seattle Kraken Thursday for their first victory of the season. While the team is just 1-5-2 overall, 4 of the previous 5 games have been decided by just 1 goal.

Penguins at Canucks projected goalies

Tristan Jarry (4-1-0, 2.81 GAA, .923 SV%) vs. Spencer Martin (0-0-1, 3.79 GAA, .879 SV%)

Jarry won his first 4 starts, allowing 3 or fewer goals in each of the outings. He had a rough go of it in Edmonton last time out Monday, coughing up 6 goals on 47 shots, but he’s well-rested and raring to go.

Martin has made just 1 start, allowing 4 goals on 33 shots in a start Oct. 18 in Columbus. The outing was the second end of a back-to-back situation.

Penguins at Canucks picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 5, Canucks 2

Moneyline

The PENGUINS (-165) are moderate favorites, but they come in rested. While it wasn’t a long trip by any means, the Canucks just played an emotional game in Seattle for their first win. Returning home against a marquee time on the second game of a back-to-back will have Vancouver back to its losing ways.

Puck line/Against the spread

The PENGUINS -1.5 (+140) is worth a look on the puck line, as it gets to face the untested Martin. Originally a third-round pick of the Colorado Avalanche in 2013, Martin has appeared in just 10 total NHL games over his 3-year career. With the Canucks skating on tired legs in front of him, the Pittsburgh offense should feast.

Over/Under

OVER 6.5 (-120) is a solid play, but only worth playing lightly. The Penguins should be able to do most of the heavy lifting for the Over, but the concern is the scoring for the Canucks.

The Over is 13-3 in the past 16 games overall for Pittsburgh dating back to last season and is 6-2 in its last 8 on the road. The Over is 12-5-2 in the past 19 games for Vancouver dating back to last season, and the Canucks combined for 9 total goals in a win in Seattle fewer than 24 hours ago.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Calgary Flames odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Calgary Flames odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Pittsburgh Penguins (4-1-1) and Calgary Flames (4-1-0) meet Tuesday at Scotiabank Saddledome. Puck drop is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Penguins vs. Flames odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Penguins suffered a 6-3 loss at the Edmonton Oilers Monday in the front end of a back-to-back Alberta two-step. The Over cashed for the 3rd straight game, and 5th time in 6 games overall.

Pittsburgh is No. 1 in goals per game (GPG) at 4.8 while ranking just 27th on the penalty kill at 72.7%. That’s a great recipe for Over results.

The Flames eased by the visiting Carolina Hurricanes Saturday by a 3-2 score in overtime. Calgary has scored 3 or more goals in all 5 games while allowing at least 2 goals in each of its outings.

Penguins at Flames projected goalies

Casey DeSmith (0-0-1, 2.85 GAA, .923 SV%) vs. Jacob Markstrom (3-0-0, 2.93 GAA, .882 SV%)

Tristan Jarry stopped 41 of 47 shots in the 6-3 loss at Edmonton Monday, so DeSmith will be tasked with the start here in the 2nd end of the back-to-back. DeSmith allowed 3 goals on 39 shots in Montreal Oct. 17 in his only previous appearance this season.

Markstrom has allowed 3 or fewer goals in each of his 4 outings, and the Flames have scored 14 total goals in his appearances. The Swede topped the Pens in both meetings last season, posting a 0.48 GAA with a .985 SV% and a shutout.

Penguins at Flames picks and predictions

Prediction

Flames 5, Penguins 3

Moneyline

The FLAMES (-150) are moderate favorites, but there is some risk here. The Penguins offense has been tremendous this season, but the goaltending and defense have been a little giving. Pittsburgh should have some tired legs here, too, after playing an up-tempo game in Edmonton Monday.

Puck line/Against the spread

The FLAMES -1.5 (+150) are worth a roll of the dice on the puck line here. The Pens have dropped just 2 games overall, and only 1 in regulation. That loss came Monday, however, and it didn’t come close to covering the puck line. Back Calgary to get it done and send Pittsburgh on its way, 0-for-Alberta.

Over/Under

OVER 6.5 (-130) is the play here, as it usually is in Pens games. However, it’s especially a good play on the second end of a back-to-back, with Pittsburgh rolling out its backup netminder.

The Over is 6-1 in the past 7 road games for the Pens dating back to last season and has cashed in 8 straight for them against winning teams, and 16 of their past 21 games overall.

The Flames are also on an Over run spilling into last season, going 5-2-1 in the past 8 at home and 7-3-2 in their past 12 games overall.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Edmonton Oilers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Edmonton Oilers odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Pittsburgh Penguins (4-0-1) battle with the Edmonton Oilers (2-3-0) Monday at Rogers Place. Puck drop is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (NHL Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Penguins vs. Oilers odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Pens are coming off an epic comeback win over the Columbus Blue Jackets Saturday. Pittsburgh trailed 2-0 after the 1st period and 3-1 midway through the game, but it scored 5 unanswered goals to win 6-3. C Sidney Crosby has 3 goals and 7 assists on the young season.

Edmonton lost a close one to the St. Louis Blues 2-0 Saturday. It was 1-0 for most of the game as St. Louis scored 5 minutes in and put the game away with an empty-netter with 1:02 remaining. C Connor McDavid (5 goals, 5 assists) and C Leon Draisaitl (2 goals, 6 assists) are off to typically fast starts.

Penguins at Oilers projected goalies

Tristan Jarry (4-0-0, 2.01 GAA, .941 SV%, 0 SO) vs. Jack Campbell (2-2-0, 3.82 GAA, .889 SV%, 0 SO)

Jarry was a little shaky early on in his last against Columbus Saturday, but he really shut the door after allowing 3 goals in the first 24 minutes of the game. He had trouble with Edmonton in his only start against them last year, allowing 4 goals on 21 shots.

Campbell was great in the 2-0 loss to St. Louis Saturday, stopping 20 of 21 shots. He was shaky in the first 3 games, though, allowing 11 goals on 87 shots. Campbell was 1-2-0 with a 3.03 GAA and .918 SV% in 3 games against Pittsburgh last year.

Penguins at Oilers picks and predictions

Prediction

Oilers 4, Penguins 3

Moneyline

The Penguins can’t start slowly and expect to win this one. All 4 of their wins saw them score 6 goals, but Campbell was an All-Star for the Toronto Maple Leafs last season, and he’ll keep them under that threshold.

I’m siding with the home team in this one as OILERS (-125) is the way to go.

Puck line/Against the spread

The last 3 meetings between these teams have resulted in multiple-goal wins. The puck line is ripe, but Edmonton isn’t playing well enough to trust, and they got off to a horrible start last year before their coach was fired. Let’s take the Pre-Built SGP of OILERS & OVER 5.5 (+200), which rewards more with less risk.

Over/Under

Pittsburgh is 4-1-0 O/U and Edmonton is 2-2-1 O/U. The Over is actually just 4-6-0 over the last 10 meetings between the teams. The Pens have the top-scoring offense in the league, and Edmonton should be in that conversation. The Oilers are going to be buzzing in their own building after they were just shut out.

Take the OVER 6.5 (-140).
