Pittsburgh Penguins at Edmonton Oilers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Edmonton Oilers odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Pittsburgh Penguins (27-23-8) take on the Edmonton Oilers (36-20-2) Sunday at Rogers Place. Puck drop is set for 9 p.m. ET (ESPN+/Hulu). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Penguins vs. Oilers odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Pens complete their Northwest/Canada trip following a 4-3 loss at the Calgary Flames Saturday. They beat the Vancouver Canucks to start the trip and lost to the Seattle Kraken afterwards. The Pens are 10 points out of a Wild Card berth and fading fast as the trade deadline looms.

The Oilers have won 3 in a row after a 3-game losing streak. They, too, played Saturday in a 2-1 victory in Seattle. C Leon Draisaitl scored his 30th goal Saturday. C Connor McDavid had an assist 1 game after snapping a 10-game goalless drought against the St. Louis Blues. He probably narrowly avoided being benched for that… not in this lifetime.

Penguins at Oilers projected goalies

Alex Nedeljkovic (9-4-4, 2.67 GAA, .915 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Calvin Pickard (7-3-0, 2.53 GAA, .905 SV%, 1 SO)

Nedeljkovic has been idle since allowing 5 to the New York Islanders Feb. 20 in a 5-4 loss. He had just 3 starts in February as the team rode starter Tristan Jarry hard trying to stay afloat. Nedeljkovic was 1-1-1 with a 3.02 GAA and .901 SV% in February.

Pickard last saw the ice in a 4-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild Feb. 23. He stopped 16 of 19 in the defeat. He won his other 2 starts in February, and he allowed 3 goals in each for a 3.02 GAA and .877 SV%.

Penguins at Oilers picks and predictions

Prediction

Oilers 5, Penguins 3

Moneyline

The Pens started Jarry against Calgary, possibly thinking they had a better chance to beat the Flames over the Oilers. They dropped that game, and now their backup must enter the crucible that is Rogers Place.

Personally, I feel comfortable enough to take Oilers -190 here. But, let’s make a logical, more fruitful decision here. Take a simple SGP of OILERS ML + OVER 4.5 (-121) at a much better price. Two backup goalies are likely to be working their core muscles watching pucks fly behind them. The last 5 meetings have had 6+ goals as well.

Puck line/Against the spread

Edmonton has won 4 straight meetings by an average margin of 3.75 goals. The Pens are fading, and their spirits are likely down for the count after losing to Calgary.

You can take OILERS -1.5 (+125) here.

If you don’t want to depend on a backup tendy, I also like SIDNEY CROSBY OVER 3.5 SHOTS (+100). He has 4+ SOG in 4 straight as he tries to put the team on his back. He’ll also step up for the challenge against McDavid.

Over/Under

As mentioned, the last 5 meetings have hit 6+ goals. Of those, 4 of the 5 hit the 7+ we’ll need to hit the Over. The Pens are 5-5 O/U over the last 10, and Edmonton is 6-4.

With backup tendies in tow, take the OVER 6.5 (-105).

Pittsburgh Penguins at Edmonton Oilers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Edmonton Oilers odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Pittsburgh Penguins (4-0-1) battle with the Edmonton Oilers (2-3-0) Monday at Rogers Place. Puck drop is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (NHL Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Penguins vs. Oilers odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Pens are coming off an epic comeback win over the Columbus Blue Jackets Saturday. Pittsburgh trailed 2-0 after the 1st period and 3-1 midway through the game, but it scored 5 unanswered goals to win 6-3. C Sidney Crosby has 3 goals and 7 assists on the young season.

Edmonton lost a close one to the St. Louis Blues 2-0 Saturday. It was 1-0 for most of the game as St. Louis scored 5 minutes in and put the game away with an empty-netter with 1:02 remaining. C Connor McDavid (5 goals, 5 assists) and C Leon Draisaitl (2 goals, 6 assists) are off to typically fast starts.

Penguins at Oilers projected goalies

Tristan Jarry (4-0-0, 2.01 GAA, .941 SV%, 0 SO) vs. Jack Campbell (2-2-0, 3.82 GAA, .889 SV%, 0 SO)

Jarry was a little shaky early on in his last against Columbus Saturday, but he really shut the door after allowing 3 goals in the first 24 minutes of the game. He had trouble with Edmonton in his only start against them last year, allowing 4 goals on 21 shots.

Campbell was great in the 2-0 loss to St. Louis Saturday, stopping 20 of 21 shots. He was shaky in the first 3 games, though, allowing 11 goals on 87 shots. Campbell was 1-2-0 with a 3.03 GAA and .918 SV% in 3 games against Pittsburgh last year.

Penguins at Oilers picks and predictions

Prediction

Oilers 4, Penguins 3

Moneyline

The Penguins can’t start slowly and expect to win this one. All 4 of their wins saw them score 6 goals, but Campbell was an All-Star for the Toronto Maple Leafs last season, and he’ll keep them under that threshold.

I’m siding with the home team in this one as OILERS (-125) is the way to go.

Puck line/Against the spread

The last 3 meetings between these teams have resulted in multiple-goal wins. The puck line is ripe, but Edmonton isn’t playing well enough to trust, and they got off to a horrible start last year before their coach was fired. Let’s take the Pre-Built SGP of OILERS & OVER 5.5 (+200), which rewards more with less risk.

Over/Under

Pittsburgh is 4-1-0 O/U and Edmonton is 2-2-1 O/U. The Over is actually just 4-6-0 over the last 10 meetings between the teams. The Pens have the top-scoring offense in the league, and Edmonton should be in that conversation. The Oilers are going to be buzzing in their own building after they were just shut out.

Take the OVER 6.5 (-140).

Penguins at Oilers projected goalies

Tristan Jarry (10-4-4, 1.85 GAA, .938 SV%, 3 SO) vs. Mikko Koskinen (11-2-0, 2.89 GAA, .912 SV%)

Jarry allowed just one goal on 32 shots in the 2-1 shootout loss in Calgary, snapping a five-start win streak that included three shutouts. He has allowed two or fewer goals in seven straight appearances.

Koskinen as won two in a row and wrapped up November with a 7-1-0 record, 3.25 GAA and .898 SV% in eight appearances. He has won four of his five home starts.

Penguins at Oilers odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 4, Oilers 3

Money line

The PENGUINS (+102) have registered victories in 19 of their last 25 meetings with the Oilers, including in each of their last six trips to Edmonton. The road team is 4-1 in the past five meetings, too. Jarry has been one of the best goaltenders in the game and the Penguins are a great play as short ‘dogs with him in the crease.

Against the spread

The Penguins +1.5 (-250) are too costly at two and a half times your potential return if you would like a little insurance.

AVOID, and trust the Pens straight up.

Over/Under

The OVER 6.5 (-107) is the lean, ever so slightly. It’s been all Under all the time for Pittsburgh with Jarry in net, but he hasn’t faced the likes of C Connor McDavid, C Leon Draisaitl and company. They’ll get theirs, even if they’re the only ones. While Koskinen has been winning, he has given up more than three goals in five of his last six appearances.
