The Pittsburgh Penguins (34-30-11) and Washington Capitals (36-28-10) meet Thursday in a key battle for Eastern Conference Wild Card slots. Opening faceoff at Capital One Arena is slated for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Penguins vs. Capitals odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Pittsburgh is coming off a 6-3 triumph as a +151 underdog at the New Jersey Devils Tuesday — the Over (6.5) easily cashed. The Penguins found twine on 6 of 21 shots and have scored 11 goals over their last 2 games.

The Capitals also last played on Tuesday. They filed a 6-2 loss as -121 dogs at the Buffalo Sabres with the Over (6) hitting. Washington heads into Thursday’s tilt looking to snap a 3-game losing streak.

The Caps lead the season series 2-1-0.

Penguins at Capitals projected goalies

Tristan Jarry (19-24-5, 2.90 GAA, .903 SV%) vs. Darcy Kuemper (13-13-3, 3.32 GAA, .888 SV%)

Jarry has been out since March 24 with an illness. The veteran netminder had a shaky March, winning just twice in 9 decisions (2-6-1), while logging a lackluster .870 SV%. He has faced the Caps 3 times this season, notching an .854 SV% (41 saves against 48 shots).

Kuemper stopped all 4 shots he faced Tuesday in a 14-minute relief stint in Tuesday’s 6-2 loss at Buffalo. The 33-year-old netminder has only appeared in 3 games since Feb. 27.

Penguins at Capitals picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 4, Capitals 3

Moneyline

The Pens are 3-0-1 over their last 4 visits to Capital One Arena.

Pittsburgh is trying to climb out of a hole created by going 3-9-2 from Feb. 29-March 24. The Penguins have looked better of late, going 4-0-1 across their last 5.

Recent games have seen the Pens create solid chances in 5-on-5 play, but actual scoring in such situations has lagged behind.

TAKE PITTSBURGH (-110).

Puck line/Against the spread

PASS: Better leverage can be found on the ML.

Over/Under

The Over is 8-3 in Pittsburgh’s last 11 games and 5-1 in the Penguins’ last 6 games on road ice. The Over is also 8-3 in Washington’s last 11 games at home.

The netminders for both sides have been leaky of late, and the Penguins offense has some undervalue lean to it.

FanDuel Sportsbook has the best offering here: BACK OVER 5.5 (-122).

Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Pittsburgh Penguins (0-1) and Washington Capitals (0-0) face off Friday at Capital One Arena. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN+/Hulu). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Penguins vs. Capitals odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

It’s a matchup between the best 2 players of the last 20 years – Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin.

The Pens try to shake off a 4-2 loss at the hands of the Chicago Blackhawks in their season opener. They led 2-1 entering the 3rd, but the young Blackhawks stormed back with 3 goals. Crosby had a goal on 3 shots.

The Capitals open the new season with a chip on their shoulder after failing to make the postseason last year. “Ovi” also renews his chase for Wayne Gretzky’s career goals record at 894, and he’s 72 away.

  • Over/Under (O/U): 6.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Penguins at Capitals projected goalies

Tristan Jarry (0-1-0, 3.13 GAA, .914 SV%) vs. Darcy Kuemper (22-26-7, 2.87 GAA, .909 SV%, 5 SO last season)

Jarry stopped 31 of 34 shots in the season opener. The Blackhawks pelted him with 27 shots on goal in the 1st 2 periods, and he stopped 26 but came undone in the 3rd. He didn’t face the Caps last season and was 1-2-0-1 against them in 2021-22. He had a 3.96 GAA and .884 SV%.

Kuemper had his 3rd-worst GAA of his 12-year career last year, and he looks to get back on track. The Capitals were ravaged by injuries in front of him, and he still had a solid .909 SV%.  He was 1-2-0 with a 2.94 GAA and .913 SV% in 3 games against Pittsburgh last season.

Penguins at Capitals picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 5, Capitals 4

Moneyline

The Pens are 5-3-2 in their last 10 meetings with the Capitals. Oddly enough, the Pens have come away with victories in 4 games in Washington during that stretch. Newly acquired D Erik Karlsson looked a little out of sync in his team debut, and I look for a better game from him in this one. I like the PENGUINS (-120) here.

Puck line/Against the spread

I’m not a fan of either side of the puck line here. I do like ALEX OVECHKIN OVER 3.5 SHOTS (-135). He gets up for playing against Crosby and had 4 shots on goal in 2 of 3 against them last year.

Over/Under

There have been a lot of Overs hitting in the opening week, and this number would have cashed in 6 of the last 10 meetings. Both goalies have had their issues against each team. According to Pregame.com, the public likes the Under here. And we don’t like to side with the public.

Take the OVER 6.5 (-110).

Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Pittsburgh Penguins (4-6-2) head to D.C. to take on the Washington Capitals (6-6-2) Wednesday at Capital One Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (TNT). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Penguins vs. Capitals odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

This is a battle of 2 playoff teams that have gotten off to rough starts. Pittsburgh has lost 7 in a row, and 5 of them have been by multiple goals. C Sidney Crosby (6 goals, 8 assists) and C Evgeni Malkin (5 goals, 7 assists) are doing their thing, but the Pens aren’t getting much production from their bottom 2 lines.

Capitals LW Alex Ovechkin has 8 goals on the year as he is now 106 goals from tying Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record. “The Great 8” has goals in 3 straight games and 5 of his last 6. The Caps are playing without LW Carl Hagelin (eye), RW T.J. Oshie (lower body), RW Tom Wilson (knee) and D John Carlson (lower body) as they try to navigate an assortment of injuries.

Penguins at Capitals projected goalies

Tristan Jarry (4-3-1, 3.38 GAA, .903 SV%, 0 SO) vs. Darcy Kuemper (4-5-1, 2.42 GAA, .919 SV%, 1 SO)

Jarry has lost 4 straight starts, and he has allowed 19 goals in the process. He allowed just 8 goals in his previous 4 starts to open the year. He had trouble with Washington last year, going 1-2-1 with a 3.96 GAA and .884 SV % in 4 starts.

On the flip side, Kuemper has been solid through 10 starts, but he has lost 3 in a row as well. His 2.42 GAA is better than it was last year when he won the Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche, but the Caps are scoring just 2.86 goals per game. Kuemper was 2-0-0 with a 3.02 GAA and .929 SV% against Pittsburgh last season.

Penguins at Capitals picks and predictions

Prediction

Capitals 3, Penguins 2

Moneyline

I think Washington sneaks this one out as its goalie is playing far better, and he can draw from the home crowd. The Capitals have won 3 of the last 4 meetings, and the underdog has taken 4 of the last 5 between the teams.

Take the CAPITALS (+105).

Puck line/Against the spread

The puck line is priced out of range with the Caps +1.5 (-220). With Jarry struggling the way he is, CAPITALS OVER 2.5 TOTAL GOALS IN REGULATION (-155) seems like a lock.

Over/Under

There are some Over trends in this matchup, but neither team is playing at the level they expect offensively. The Over is 13-3 in the last 16 meetings and 4-1 in the last 5 in Washington.

However, Pittsburgh is 5-5 O/U over the last 10, and Washington is 4-6. Pittsburgh has just 15 goals in its last 7 games, and Washington has just 13.

LEAN UNDER 6.5 (-108).

Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Sunday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Pittsburgh Penguins (5-4-4) travel to meet the Washington Capitals (8-2-4) Sunday at Capital One Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Penguins vs. Capitals odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Penguins were doubled up 6-3 by the Senators in Ottawa Saturday, now they turn around and play the second end of the rare national capital back-to-back. Pittsburgh is 1-1-2 across its last four, and 2-4-2 over its last eight.

The Capitals enter on a three-game win streak, including 4-3 at Columbus Friday behind G Ilya Samsonov. Seven of Washington’s eight victories have been by more than one goal, so the one-goal win was certainly a rarity.

Penguins at Capitals projected goalies

Tristan Jarry (5-2-3, 2.23 GAA, .929 SV%) vs. Ilya Samsonov (4-0-1, 2.93 GAA, .894 SV%, 1 SO)

Jarry did not travel to Ottawa with the team, but he is projected to start in D.C. Each of his last four starts has needed overtime or a shootout, and he is 2-0-2 with a 2.34 GAA and .932 SV% in those four November outings.

Samsonov turned aside 26 of his 29 shots in a 4-3 win at Columbus Friday, making up for an absolute egg-laying in his previous outing Nov. 4 in Florida when he let in three goals on just 18 shots.

Penguins at Capitals odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 4, Capitals 3

Money line

The PENGUINS (+135) play the second end of a back-to-back situation, but the good news is they welcome back head coach Mike Sullivan after a bout with COVID-19.

While Pittsburgh is 1-5 in its last six games on the road, it has won four of the past five when playing on no rest. Pittsburgh is also 6-2 in the past eight meetings with Washington, and 5-2 in its last seven trips to D.C.

Against the spread

The PENGUINS +1.5 (-210) are worth playing if you aren’t trusting them straight up. This price isn’t totally out of line for a little bit of insurance, but at more than -200 this is beginning to lose its value a little bit.

Over/Under

The OVER 6.5 (+115) is worth a small-unit play at plus money. The Over has cashed in nine of the last 12 meetings in this series, while the Over is 4-1 in Pittsburgh’s past five on the road, and the Over is 4-1-1 in its last six against winning teams.
