The Pittsburgh Penguins (8-12-4) visit the Boston Bruins (11-10-3) Friday. Puck drop from TD Garden is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET (TNT / Max). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Penguins vs. Bruins odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: First meeting; Bruins won 2-1 last season

Pittsburgh snapped a 3-game losing streak with a 5-4 win over the Vancouver Canucks Wednesday as a -108 home favorite. RW Bryan Rust had 2 goals in the win while D Erik Karlsson had 3 assists.

Boston has won 3 of its last 4 games after taking down the New York Islanders 6-3 Wednesday as a +123 road underdog. LW Brad Marchand and C Pavel Zacha each found the back of the net twice in the win.

Penguins at Bruins projected goalies

Alex Nedeljkovic (3-4-3, 3.42 GAA, .877 SV%) vs. Jeremy Swayman (6-8-2, 3.16 GAA, .888 SV%, 1 SO)

Nedeljkovic has been subpar this season for the Penguins. His wins, GAA, and SV% all rank 46th or below in the NHL. He has lost 5 of his last 6 games, allowing 3 or more goals in each outing.

Swayman has also been average this season with his SV% and GAA ranking 43rd and 44th, respectively. He has lost 5 of his last 7 games while allowing 3 or more goals in 4 of the 7. He has allowed 1 goal in back-to-back games.

Prediction

Bruins 3, Penguins 1

Moneyline

PASS.

There is better value on the Bruins (-175) to cover the puck line.

Puck line/Against the spread

BET BRUINS -1.5 (+145).

Pittsburgh has struggled recently, going 3-5-2 over its last 10 games. Five of its last 7 losses have come by 3 or more goals.

Boston has won 3 of its last 4 games and is coming off a 3-goal road win Wednesday.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 6 (-115).

Boston has failed to hit the Over in 7 of its last 10 games, including 5 of its last 6. It has scored 2 or fewer goals in 6 of its last 7 while allowing 2 or fewer in 3 of its last 4.

Pittsburgh has scored 1 goal in 2 of its last 3 games and 2 or fewer in 7 of its last 10.

Winnipeg Jets at Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Winnipeg Jets at Pittsburgh Penguins odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Winnipeg Jets (16-3-0) take on the Pittsburgh Penguins (7-10-4) in 1 of 2 games around the league Friday. Puck drop from PPG Paints Arena is set for 7 p.m. ET (NHL Network). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Jets vs. Penguins odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: Jets lead 1-0

The Jets brushed off their longest losing streak of their monstrous season, a whopping 2 games, with a 6-3 victory over the Florida Panthers Tuesday. C Mark Scheifele had a hat trick to give him 12 goals on the year, and LW Kyle Connor netted his 12th of the year as well.

The Pens have lost 4 of 5 after a 3-2 OT defeat to the Tampa Bay Lightning Tuesday. RW Rickard Rakell scored his 7th goal of the season. Pittsburgh is last in the league with 3.86 goals allowed per game and 30th with 32.9 shots on goal allowed.

Jets at Penguins projected goalies

Connor Hellebuyck (13-2-0, 2.20 GAA, .923 SV%, 3 SO) vs. Tristan Jarry (1-2-1, 4.72 GAA, .863 SV%)

If a goalie were ever in consideration for the Hart Trophy, it would be Hellebuyck to this point. He’s 6-1-0 with a 2.29 GAA, .923 SV% and 2 SO in 7 games this month. He was 1-1-0 with a 2.00 GAA and .937 SV% in 2 starts against Pittsburgh last year.

Jarry was not great in his first game back from his conditioning or instructional assignment — whatever you want to call it. He allowed 5 goals on 38 shots to a “meh” Columbus Blue Jackets team Nov. 15. He answered with 32 saves on 35 shots against the Lightning Tuesday. He was 1-1-0 with a .963 SV% in 2 starts against the Jets last year, including a 23-save shutout.

Jets at Penguins picks and predictions

Prediction

Jets 4, Penguins 2

Moneyline

I would consider the Jets -185 here. I feel they are that far ahead of the Penguins, even at home.

However, let’s get those odds down a little bit and SGP JETS ML + KYLE CONNOR 2 SOG (-130). Conner has 2+ SOG in 7 straight games.

Puck line/Against the spread

We’re going with an SGP with very little risk in the ML section. So let’s just head to the total.

PASS.

Over/Under

Because this is at 6.5, I am taking the Under. I don’t trust the Penguins to score the 3 goals necessary to cash an Over. The Pens are 22nd in the league with 2.67 G/game and tied for 27th with a paltry 8.7% shooting percentage. Jarry has lived up to his jarring name all season, allowing 3+ goals in each of his starts. So that’s the only concern, but I’m going UNDER 6.5 (-120).

Detroit Red Wings at Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Detroit Red Wings at Pittsburgh Penguins odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Detroit Red Wings (6-7-1) meet the Pittsburgh Penguins (6-9-2) Wednesday at PPG Paints Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (TNT/Max). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Red Wings vs. Penguins odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: Penguins lead 1-0

The Red Wings suffered a 4-0 home loss as +184 underdogs against the New York Rangers Saturday. Not a good follow-up as Detroit managed just a single goal in a 3-1 loss as +175 underdogs at Toronto Friday. The Red Wings are 2-5 in their last 7 games, while the Under has cashed in their last 4 games.

Detroit has had trouble scoring, posting 3 or fewer goals in 11 of 14 games to date, averaging just 2.4 goals per game (GPG), while allowing 3.1 GPG. The penalty kill ranks last in the NHL at 65.0%.

The Penguins were crushed 7-1 as +148 home underdogs Monday by the Dallas Stars. Pittsburgh is just 1-2-1 in the past 4 games, while the Under hast cashed in 4 of the past 6 outings.

Pittsburgh won at Detroit 6-3 Oct. 10 with backup G Joel Blomqvist in between the pipes against Reds Wings backup G Ville Husso. Blomqvist stopped 29 of 32 shows, while Husso was pulled after allowing 4 goals on 14 shots.

Red Wings at Penguins projected goalies

Cam Talbot (4-2-1, 2.40 GAA, .926 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Tristan Jarry (1-1-0, 5.47 GAA, .836 SV%)

Talbot is confirmed to face the Pens in the Steel City. He has been pretty good this November, going 2-1-0 with a 1.35 GAA and .950 SV% in 3 starts, allowing just 4 goals on 80 shots. He was called upon in relief of Husso in that first meeting Oct. 10, stopping 12 of 14 shots against the Pens.

Jarry is expected to make his first appearance since Oct. 16, when he was pulled after allowing 3 goals on 5 shots against Buffalo. He was loaned to the team’s AHL affiliate to iron out some issues. For now, Jarry is jockeying with Blomqvist and G Alex Nedeljkovic in a crowded Pittsburgh goalie room.

Red Wings at Penguins picks and predictions

Prediction

Red Wings 5, Penguins 3

Moneyline

DETROIT (+120) is a solid play at plus-money against a stumbling Pittsburgh squad (-140).

The Red Wings have had trouble lighting the lamp lately, but that shouldn’t be a problem against a very giving Penguins goaltender, whether it’s Jarry or Nedeljkovic. The Pens have allowed 4 or more goals in 3 of the past 4 games, or 4.5 GPG in the 4-game span.

Puck line/Against the spread

Backing the Red Wings +1.5 (-210) will cost more than 2 times the potential return. That’s way too expensive and it’s not worth the risk if you’re looking for a little bit of insurance and you just can’t bring yourself to play Detroit straight up.

PASS.

Over/Under

OVER 6.5 (-115) is the way to go.

Be careful as the Under is 4-2 in the past 6 games for the Penguins, but not only has Pittsburgh has allowed 4 or more goals in 3 of the past 4 outings, it has allowed 4 or more goals in 10 of the past 13 outings.

While the Under has hit in 4 in a row for the Red Wings, the Over cashed in the first meeting with the Pens. Facing Pittsburgh should be the elixir to cure Detroit’s scoring ills.

Minnesota Wild at Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Minnesota Wild at Pittsburgh Penguins odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Minnesota Wild (5-1-2) and Pittsburgh Penguins (3-6-1) face off  Tuesday in Western Pennsylvania. Puck drop at PPG Paints Arena will be at 7 p.m. (ESPN+). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Wild vs. Penguins odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: First meeting; teams went 1-1 last season

Minnesota is closing out a 7-game road trip. Game 6 was a 7-5 Saturday loss at the Philadelphia Flyers. That setback snapped a 4-game winning streak. Prior to yielding 7 goals Saturday, the Wild had allowed just 2.00 goals per game.

The Penguins are back at home after closing out a 4-game road trip with a 4-3 loss at the Vancouver Canucks Saturday. Pittsburgh lost all 4 road tilts (0-3-1) and is 0-4-1 since Oct. 18.

Wild at Penguins projected goalies

Marc-Andre Fleury (1-0-1, 2.89 GAA, .900 SV%) vs. Alex Nedeljkovic (0-2-1, 3.94 GAA, .874 SV%)

Fleury last played on Thursday, stopping 24 of 26 pucks in a start against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Tuesday’s turn at Pittsburgh would mark just the 39-year-old’s third start this season. Fleury spent the first 13 years of his career with the Pens.

Nedeljkovic has struggled over 3 starts this season. The 28-year-old, who last season logged an .894 SV% on the road and a .911 mark at home, is making his first 2024-25 start on home ice.

Wild at Penguins picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 4, Wild 3

Moneyline

Pittsburgh has won 4 of the last 5 series meetings and each of the last 2 at PPG Paints Arena.

Minnesota owns an inflated 13.3% shooting percentage so far and could well be closing out its lengthy road trip on fumes. The due-to-retire-at-season’s-end Fleury will likely be up for what figures as his final career start in Pittsburgh. But the veteran netminder has struggled in early-season starts over the last couple years.

The Penguins have had a wonky travel slate so far. Their puck-possession analytics are of a higher quality than their game results, and they are worth a green check mark in this spot at home.

TAKE PITTSBURGH (+105).

Puck line/Against the spread

PASS: No interest here.

Over/Under

Pittsburgh is likely deserving of better GAA numbers than what it has exhibited thus far (4.20 GAA), but the Pens are by no means a tight defensive club. They play a high-volume game with a lot of shots — and high-danger ones — at both ends of the ice.

Minnesota is more responsible defensively, but figures to have some defensive shot and scoring stats that won’t hold up in the long run.

BACK THE OVER 6 (-120).

Pittsburgh Penguins at Edmonton Oilers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Edmonton Oilers odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Pittsburgh Penguins (3-4-1) take on the Edmonton Oilers (2-4-1) Friday. Puck drop from Rogers Place is set for 9 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Penguins vs. Oilers odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: First meeting; Oilers won 2-0 last season

The Pens have dropped 3 straight after a 4-3 shootout loss to the Calgary Flames Tuesday. RW Rickard Rakell netted his 4th goal of the season. C Sidney Crosby had an assist, but he has had a quiet start to the season with 1 goal and 6 assists in 8 games.

The Oilers dropped a 3-2 OT game to the Carolina Hurricanes Tuesday. They’ve lost 2 straight in a wild swing of a season. They dropped the first 3, won 2 and now have dropped 2. C Connor McDavid put up 2 goals Tuesday to give him 3 goals and 5 assists in the young season.

  • Puck line (PL)/Against the spread (ATS): Penguins +1.5 (-135) | Oilers -1.5 (+115)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 7 (O: +110 | U: -130)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4132″ ]

Penguins at Oilers projected goalies

Alex Nedeljkovic (0-1-1, 3.86 GAA, .869 SV%) vs. Stuart Skinner (1-3-1, 3.74 GAA, .866 SV%)

The Pens sent starter Tristan Jarry back to Pittsburgh to get some individual work in with their goalie coach. It’s a rather strange move, but Nedeljkovic has handled the last 2 starts and figures to go again Friday. He was solid Tuesday, stopping 22 of 25 in a 4-3 shootout loss. He allowed 5 goals on 36 shots in his first start against Winnipeg.

Skinner was really good against Carolina Tuesday, stopping 30 of 33 against a tough team. However, he has allowed 3 goals in 4 straight starts after allowing 5 in his season opener. He played a grand total of 1:16 against the Pens last season and didn’t face a shot on goal.

Penguins at Oilers picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 3, Oilers 2

Moneyline

Edmonton is 1-3-1 at home thus far, and there’s no chance I’m going to risk -225 on it anywhere. It has allowed 27 goals and scored 14 thus far. The Pens aren’t lighting the world ablaze, but they have scored 3+ in 5 of 8.

This is more of a pick ’em to me. As such, I’m going to take a chance on PENGUINS +180 for the price.

Puck line/Against the spread

We’re going with LEON DRAISTAITL OVER 2.5 SHOTS (-120). That’s a pretty good price for a top-5 player to get just 3 shots on goal. He had 3 SOG in each game against Pittsburgh last season, and they are anything but a defensive stalwart.

Over/Under

It’s possible we see 7 goals here, but it’s really hard to look for 8 goals to cash a bet. The Over is 5-2-1 for Pittsburgh and 2-4-1 for Edmonton thus far. And that’s exactly why I’m taking the value with Pittsburgh because it articulates the edge it has offensively.

Take the UNDER 7 (-130).

Pittsburgh Penguins at Winnipeg Jets odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Winnipeg Jets odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Pittsburgh Penguins (3-3-0) visit the Winnipeg Jets (4-0-0) Sunday. Puck drop from Canada Life Centre is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Penguins vs. Jets odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: First meeting; tied 1-1 last season

The Penguins fell 4-1 as +143 home underdogs to the Carolina Hurricanes Friday with the Under (6.5) hitting. LW Drew O’Connor opened the scoring in the 1st period, but the Penguins couldn’t hold the lead as the Hurricanes responded with 4 unanswered goals — 1 in the 1st, 2 in the 2nd and 1 in the 3rd. G Joel Blomqvist faced a tough night, turning aside 35 shots but ultimately succumbing to Carolina’s relentless 39-shot attack.

The Jets stayed undefeated with an 8-3 win as -399 home favorites Friday vs. the San Jose Sharks, hitting the Over (6) by themselves. They surged to a 4-1 lead after the 1st period and never looked back. C Cole Perfetti (2 goals, 2 assists) and LW Nikolaj Ehlers (2 goals, 1 assist) led the charge, contributing to the Jets’ impressive start to the season — they’ve outscored opponents 18-5.

Penguins at Jets projected goalies

Tristan Jarry (1-1-0, 5.47 GAA, .836 SV%) vs. Connor Hellebuyck (4-0-0, 1.25 GAA, .952 SV%, 1 SO)

While rookie Blomqvist has been impressive in his 3 starts (2-2-0, 3.16 GAA, .908 SV%), NHL.com projects Jarry as Sunday’s starter. He has struggled out of the gate and is in dire need of a strong showing. In his last start, he was pulled after allowing 3 goals on 5 shots in the first 11 minutes and 33 seconds of a 6-5 Penguins’ OT home win vs. the Buffalo Sabres Wednesday.

Hellebuyck improved to 4-0 on the season with Friday’s win despite allowing 3 goals on 22 shots. The 10-year veteran had been solid in his first 3 starts, allowing just 2 goals. With a career 2.62 GAA and 38 shutouts, he remains a steady force in net.

Penguins at Jets picks and predictions

Prediction

Jets 3, Penguins 1

Moneyline

PASS.

There is better value on the Jets’ spread.

Puck line/Against the spread

BET JETS -1.5 (+145).

The Jets have been dominant on home ice, posting a perfect 3-0 record while outscoring their opponents 12-5. Hellebuyck, Winnipeg’s veteran netminder, has been in top form, stopping 100 of the 105 shots — reminiscent of his prime.

Hellebuyck was stellar the last time he faced the Penguins, allowing just 1 goal on 36 shots in a 2-1 home win Feb. 10. With the Jets playing at such a high level and Hellebuyck providing stability in net, betting on Winnipeg to cover the spread at home seems like a strong play.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 6 (+100).

The last 6 meetings between these 2 teams — dating back to 2021 — have all gone Under the total, suggesting a pattern of low-scoring games. The Under is 2-1-1 so far in Jets’ games this season and Hellebuyck has been stellar, allowing just 5 goals across 4 games.

Meanwhile, the Penguins offense has been inconsistent, showing both high-scoring bursts and struggles to find the back of the net. With a strong defensive presence in Winnipeg and Pittsburgh’s unpredictability, the Under is a solid bet here.

Carolina Hurricanes at Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Carolina Hurricanes at Pittsburgh Penguins odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Carolina Hurricanes (1-1-0) take on the Pittsburgh Penguins (3-2-0) Friday. Puck drop from PPG Paints Arena is set for 7 p.m. ET (NHL Network). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Hurricanes vs. Penguins odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: First meeting; tied 2-2 last season

The Canes come to town fresh off a 4-2 win against the New Jersey Devils Tuesday. They’ve only played 2 games thus far as they were affected, ironically enough, by Hurricane Milton postponing a game against Tampa Bay. C Sebastian Aho and C Seth Jarvis each scored their 1st goal Tuesday.

The Pens took down the Buffalo Sabres 6-5 in OT Wednesday for their 3rd win in 4 games. C Sidney Crosby became the 10th player in NHL history to reach 1,600 career points. C Evgeni Malkin became the 48th player in history to reach 500 goals.

Hurricanes at Penguins projected goalies

Frederik Andersen (0-1-0, 2.07 GAA, .905 SV%) vs. Joel Blomqvist (2-1-0, 2.86 GAA, .913 SV%)

Andersen was solid despite taking the loss in the season opener. He stopped 19 of 21 shots in the 4-1 loss. He hasn’t faced the Pens since Jan. 14, 2023, and he stopped 34 of 35 in a 2-1 win.

Tristan Jarry allowed 3 goals on 5 shots in the first period, which means he could actually draw this start. Blomqvist is expected, though. The 22-year-old rookie has been good early on, stopping 26+ in all 3 appearances.

Hurricanes at Penguins picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 3, Hurricanes 2

Moneyline

Over the last 5 meetings, the home team has been victorious. The Pens have scored 6 goals in 2 straight games, and Carolina is still trying to hit its stride with just 2 games since its last preseason game Oct. 5. As such, I’ll take the PENGUINS +135 for a decent return.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Canes have a very strong defense, and in order to win this game, the Pens will need to cycle the puck. So I’m keying on D Kris Letang, who has 2 SOG in each of the last 3 games. Take KRIS LETANG OVER 1.5 SHOTS (-130).

Over/Under

Carolina is 0-1-1 O/U in their 2 games, and Pittsburgh is 3-1-1. The Over in this matchup, though, is just 1-8-1 in the last 10. There is some instability without knowing who Pittsburgh will start in net, but I like the UNDER 6.5 (-120).

Sabres at Penguins picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 4, Sabres 3

Moneyline

BET PENGUINS (-130).

Pittsburgh has won 2 of its last 3 games, each on the road, and returns home on Wednesday. With the home crowd on its side and an attack that has produced 6 goals in 2 of its last 3 games, Pittsburgh holds the advantage. Buffalo has struggled to find its offensive groove early this season scoring 1 goal in 3 of its 4 games.

Puck line/Against the spread

PASS.

There is value on the Penguins moneyline.

Over/Under

BET OVER 6 (-120).

The Sabres scored 5 goals in their last game and have allowed 3 or more goals in 3 of their 4 games. The Penguins have scored 6 goals in 2 of their last 3 games while allowing 3 or more goals in each of their 4 games this season. With 2 shaky goalies projected to be in net, take the Over.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Toronto Maple Leafs odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Toronto Maple Leafs odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Pittsburgh Penguins (1-1-0) meet the Toronto Maple Leafs (1-1-0) at Scotiabank Arena Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (NHL Network). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Penguins vs. Maple Leafs odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: First meeting; Maple Leafs won 2-1 in 2023-24

The Penguins were drummed 6-0 at home by the New York Rangers Wednesday, while rebounding for a 6-3 win in Detroit Thursday behind backup netminder Joel Blomqvist. Anthony Beauvillier netted 2 goals, while Erik Karlsson was good for a goal and an assist.

Evgeni Malkin picked up 2 assists in Thursday’s game, giving him 800 for his career. He is 1 of 3 players in the NHL with at least 800 helpers in his career, joining teammate Sidney Crosby and Patrick Kane. He is also the 3rd player in franchise history to hit the mark, joining Crosby and Mario Lemieux.

Anthony Stolarz was in net in the opener at Montreal, falling 1-0 despite making 26 saves. He only allowed a single power-play goal in place of the injured Joseph Woll (lower body). Dennis Hildeby started in Thursday’s game at New Jersey, and he made 22 saves in the 4-2 win in his NHL debut.

Penguins at Maple Leafs projected goalies

Tristan Jarry (0-1-0, 6.00 GAA, .850 SV%) vs. Anthony Stolarz (0-1-0, 1.05 GAA, .963 SV%)

Jarry allowed 6 goals on 40 shots in Wednesday’s 6-0 setback in the regular-season opener at home against the Rangers. He allowed 5 even-strength goals, and a shorthanded goal, in the loss.

Stolarz was a surprise starter Wednesday in Montreal. He was a backup to Sergei Bobrovsky in Florida last season. He made 26 saves on 27 shots, with just a power-play goal allowed to Cole Caufield, in a 1-0 loss to the Canadiens.

Penguins at Maple Leafs picks and predictions

Prediction

Maple Leafs 4, Penguins 2

Moneyline

The Maple Leafs (-190) will cost you nearly 2 times your potential return, and that’s just a little too much risk for not nearly enough reward.

While the home team cashed in all 3 meetings last season, 2 of the 3 battles were by a single goal, including a Leafs win in OT on April 8. And, the underdog is 6-3 in the past 9 meetings in this series since Oct. 23, 2021, so be careful.

PASS.

Puck line/Against the spread

Despite the trends, which might point to the underdog, especially on the puck line, the MAPLE LEAFS -1.5 (+125) are a better play at plus-money.

Toronto has the firepower on offense, and that was on display against New Jersey last time out. Max Pacioretty scored the 1st goal of the season for the team, while Bobby McMann, Steven Lorentz and John Tavares also etched their names onto the scoresheet. And, that’s only one of the big dogs. It might be a sign of how deep this Toronto offense can be in 2024-25.

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (-110) is the lean, but consider a half-unit play at the most.

The total has gone low in both games for the Leafs so far, while the Over is 1-0-1 in the 2 outings for the Pens so far.

However, the series trends point to an Under play, as the total has gone low at a 6-1-1 clip in the past 8 meetings dating back to Nov. 20, 2021.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Pittsburgh Penguins (0-1-0) take on the Detroit Red Wings (0-0-0) Thursday. Puck drop from Little Caesars Arena is set for 7 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Penguins vs. Red Wings odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: First meeting; Pens won 2-1 last year

The Pens had their igloos ransacked by the New York Rangers in a 6-0 defeat Wednesday night. They will have to regroup on the back end of a back-to-back on the road against the Wings in their season and home opener. G Tristan Jarry did all he could, stopping 35 of 41 shots in the barrage. C Sidney Crosby played 20:59 and had 2 SOG.

The Wings open their season Thursday night after a promising offseason. They brought in quality veterans in RW Vladimir Tarasenko and G Cam Talbot to shore up their solid depth. They also re-signed RW Patrick Kane and locked up cornerstone D Moritz Seider to a 7-year deal. The Wings are primed for a chance to end their 8-year playoff drought.

Penguins at Red Wings projected goalies

Joel Blomqvist (25-12-6, 2.16 GAA, .921 SV% in ’23-24 with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in AHL) vs. Ville Husso (9-5-2, 3.55 GAA, .892 SV% in ’23-24).

The 22-year-old former 2nd-round pick is slated for his NHL debut Thursday. He gave up 2 goals in 5:05 in his last preseason start Friday but settled in, stopping 26 of 29 overall.

The 29-year-old Husso was limited to 19 games last season due to injury, which has been his calling card back to his days in the minors. He did face the Pens in a 6-3 victory last year, though, stopping 30 of 33 in the process.

Penguins at Red Wings picks and predictions

Prediction

Red Wings 5, Penguins 2

Moneyline

In last year’s home opener, the Wings roared out to a 6-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. I look for that kind of intensity Thursday, whether the Pens bring back Jarry on consecutive nights or go with the rookie.

Take the RED WINGS -140.

Puck line/Against the spread

It’s not a great strategy overall, but it makes sense here. I’m going with RED WINGS -1.5 (+170) for a HALF-UNIT. Detroit has won 2 of the last 3 matchups at home vs. Pittsburgh, and both of those wins were by 3 goals.

Over/Under

The Over is the way to go here. Pittsburgh gave up 6 goals at home Wednesday night, traveled to Detroit and has to face a team with momentum from the offseason. All 3 matchups had 7+ goals and went Over last year.

Take the OVER 6.5 (-120).
