Latest mock draft has Joey Porter Jr. headed to the AFC North

Following the NFL combine, an updated mock draft sees Joey Piorter Jr. heading to a dream spot.

We are nearing the 2023 NFL Draft, and with the combine now concluded, we were able to see some of the draft’s best prospects.

One of those prospects, perhaps one of the best at his position in this year’s draft is cornerback Joey Porter Jr.

Not only that, but Porter Jr. has also been featured in several 2023 NFL mock drafts.

This week, Patrick Conn of the College Sports Wires has Porter Jr mocked to the Steelers with the 17th overall pick.

Let’s break this one down.

The Steelers already have a strong defense. So, adding a player like Porter Jr. would only make them that much better.

However, the Steelers are also in need of a true number one cornerback in their secondary room.

That is where Porter Jr. comes in.

Much of the corners right now on the Steelers have the talent, but they are also unproven.

Porter Jr. also provides the Steelers with another focal point on their defense and a leader in their cornerback room.

Let’s also not forget about his father, Joey Porter Sr., who played for the Steelers for several years and had plenty of success with them.

The Steelers could also potentially lose both of their starting corners to free agency this offseason.

Cameron Sutton is set to become a free agent, and although William Jackson III isn’t up until 2024, he does have a potential out in 2023.

So, the Steelers could be struggling and in desperate need of a corner.

If they were to keep Jackson III for the final year of his contract, then Porter Jr. could come in and be that true number one corner that the Steelers so desperately need.

As of right now, it would be a bit surprising to see the Steelers let both Sutton and Jackson walk in free agency, especially with how much they are struggling in their cornerback room.

However, if they were to move on from both corners, this is a deep enough secondary draft where they address the cornerback position heavy in the spring.

As for the Steelers’ secondary room as a whole, imagine putting Porter Jr. on the same team as Minkah Fitzpatrick. Wow is that fun and quite scary to think about.

Plus, the Steelers are going to need a corner to stop star wide receivers in the AFC North like Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and Amari Cooper.

The Steelers already have perhaps two of the top 10 defensive players in the NFL, in Minkah Fitzpatrick and TJ Watt. Adding a player like Porter Jr. would help boost their secondary room and stop players like Chase, Higgins and Coopers twice a season.

It’s also worth noting that another key team, the Baltimore Ravens, could be in trouble. Why? Well, not just because they could lose Lamar Jackson, but also because they could lose both Marcus Peters and Marlon Humphrey over the next few seasons to free agency.

Joey Porter Jr. would be that “match-made-in-heaven” pick for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Olu Fashanu’s NFL draft decision drastically changes mock draft logic

Olu Fashanu’s NFL decision should lead to plenty of mock draft revisions.

As we wrap up the regular season, Penn State awaits its hopes of getting into a New Year’s Six bowl. That also means we are getting closer to draft season.

This week, CBS Sports features two Nittany Lions in the first round. Who are these two players? Let’s take a look.

The first player has Penn State offensive lineman [autotag]Olu Fashanu[/autotag] headed to the Steelers. While this pick would have made plenty of sense for the Steelers, Fashanu announced his decision to return to Penn State in 2023.

Let’s break down what this means for Fashanu and his draft stock for 2024.

Several NFL draft analysts had Fashanu on their top 10 big boards. At just 19, turning 20 in December, Fashanu’s development this season was through the roof, and that is what had scouts out of their seats.

Some analysts had Fashanu as a top tackle in the draft, over players like Georgia’s Broderick Jones, Ohio State’s Paris Johnson Jr., and Northwestern’s Peter. Skoronski. However, what sets him apart from those players is his lack of experience at the collegiate level.

If we want to take a look at a potential way-too-early big board of offensive tackle prospects for the 2024 draft, you could certainly make the argument that Fashanu is near the top, with other players like Alabama’s JC Latham and Georgia’s Amarius Mims.

It is definitely a shocking move for Fashanu to not enter the 2023 draft after skyrocketing his stock this season. But he could also really benefit from it by improving his craft and gaining more experience at the collegiate level at Penn State.

This season was Fashanu’s first full season starting at the collegiate level. Sure, teams that were draft him in 2023 can take their time in developing him. The same can go in 2024, but Fashanu would also bring much more experience to the table.

The next player is [autotag]Joey Porter Jr.[/autotag] headed to the Detroit Lions in the NFC North. This wouldn’t be the first time Porter Jr. has been featured by the Lions, and it’s clear to see why. As of right now, the Lions have two first-round picks, including the Rams pick from the Matthew Stafford trade.

The Lions have a secondary that has been struggling for a while now. They drafted Jeff Okudah in the first round in 2020. He hasn’t really lived up to his potential either. Sure, he has dealt with injuries, and he is slowly starting to come around. However, the Lions still need to build depth in their cornerback room.

On top of that, Porter Jr. would also be the true NFL corner that the Lions need. He has been lights out this season and has continued to solidify himself as a first-round corner in the 2023 draft.

The Lions are a rebuilding team, and they don’t really have a key piece to build around on their defense. That is where Porter Jr. comes in.

CBS Sports three-round mock draft features four Nittany Lions

With that being said, CBS Sports recently released a three-round mock draft that has four Penn State players going day two.

It’s around that time of year where teams get the opportunity to interview prospects they show interest in. Penn State’s defense will likely have a few players hear their names called early next month in the draft.

Monday Night Football featured big plays by former Nittany Lions

Penn State’s Pat Freiermuth and Allen Robinson had some big moments on Monday Night Football

It is always great to see some of the former stars from Penn State do well at the next level. On Monday night, two former Penn State stars came up with some big plays as the Pittsburgh Steelers managed to get past the Chicago Bears in the national spotlight. Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Friermuth continued to shine in his rookie season for the Steelers with a pair of touchdown catches in the win, while former Penn State wide receiver Allen Robinson had some big plays to help the Bears make a push.

Freiermuth scored his first of two touchdowns early in the second quarter as the Steelers took a two-score lead on the Bears.

With the Bears chipping away at the Pittsburgh lead later in the second quarter, Freiermuth once again proved to be a reliable option for Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisburger. Freiermuth’s second touchdown of the game came later in the second quarter to add some cushion to the Pittsburgh lead before halftime.

Late in the fourth quarter with the Bears trailing Justin Fields would connect with Allen Robinson for a 32-yard gain.

Robinson finished the game with 4 catches for 68 yards while Pat Freiermuth finished with 5 catches for 43 yards.

Will Pat Freiermuth score a touchdown in his NFL debut against the Bills?

Pat Freiermuth’s NFL debut with the Pittsburgh Steelers looks like it will come in Week 1 against the defending AFC East champions.

There was plenty of NFL schedule news on Thursday. With the release of the 2021 NFL schedule rolling out, we got our first glimpse at when exactly a number of former Penn State players will be playing their first games, and who they will be facing.

Micah Parsons will play in the NFL season opener for the Dallas Cowboys against defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay. Odafe Oweh will take the stage on Monday Night Football when the Baltimore Ravens travel to Las Vegas to play the Raiders. In between, former Penn State tight end Pat Freiermuth may get his chance to get his first taste of the NFL, and potentially his first career NFL touchdown.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will play the defending AFC East champion Buffalo Bills in Week 1, with the Bills hosting the Steelers for a 1 pm kickoff.

The Steelers drafted Freiermuth with their second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Freiermuth is expected to be a staple in the Steelers offense in due time, and maybe even as early as the season opener.

The Steelers also signed former Nittany Lion safety Lamont Wade as an undrafted free agent.
