Former Penn State safety Lamont Wade released by Steelers

Former Penn State safety is once again an NFL free agent

While Penn State is preparing to play its first game of the 2021 season this week, NFL teams are winding down their training camps and trimming their rosters to get to the league maximum of 53 players on an active roster. O Saturday, the Pittsburgh Steelers made some cuts from the team to begin getting to the 53-man roster, and that has resulted in a former Nittany Lion once again becoming a free agent as the season draws near.

Lamont Wade was among the nine players officially released by the Steelers on Saturday, at least temporarily putting Wade’s NFL plans on hold. Wade signed with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent following the conclusion of the 2021 NFL draft.

During his time at Penn State, Wade played in 47 games with 22 starts during his four years with the Nittany Lions.

Now a free agent, we will continue to monitor what opportunities are available to Wade as teams look to add another safety t the roster or practice squad.

Will Pat Freiermuth score a touchdown in his NFL debut against the Bills?

Pat Freiermuth’s NFL debut with the Pittsburgh Steelers looks like it will come in Week 1 against the defending AFC East champions.

There was plenty of NFL schedule news on Thursday. With the release of the 2021 NFL schedule rolling out, we got our first glimpse at when exactly a number of former Penn State players will be playing their first games, and who they will be facing.

Micah Parsons will play in the NFL season opener for the Dallas Cowboys against defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay. Odafe Oweh will take the stage on Monday Night Football when the Baltimore Ravens travel to Las Vegas to play the Raiders. In between, former Penn State tight end Pat Freiermuth may get his chance to get his first taste of the NFL, and potentially his first career NFL touchdown.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will play the defending AFC East champion Buffalo Bills in Week 1, with the Bills hosting the Steelers for a 1 pm kickoff.

The Steelers drafted Freiermuth with their second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Freiermuth is expected to be a staple in the Steelers offense in due time, and maybe even as early as the season opener.

The Steelers also signed former Nittany Lion safety Lamont Wade as an undrafted free agent.

Penn State’s NFL draft history through the years

With plenty of Penn State talent, we take a look at the history of players that get their name called on draft night.

The 2021 NFL Draft is slated to kick off around 8 PM ET on Thursday night. Football fans are getting excited (and nervous) to see how their favorite teams’ front offices decide which players they want to develop into future stars.

This year, Penn State has a handful of players that should get their name called over the next several days. Top draft prospects Micah Parsons will hear his name on Thursday night pending any chaos that unfolds. Jayson Oweh has been mocked in the first round, but he could fall down to the top half of the second round along with tight end Pat Freiermuth.

Shaka Toney, Lamont Wade, Will Fries and Michael Menet fill out the rest of the 2021 draft prospects for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State football has had 361 drafted players over the years, which is tied for third-most in the Big Ten (behind Michigan and Ohio State) and sixth-most all-time.

In the 2020 NFL Draft, Penn State had five players drafted. Yetur Gross-Matos (Panthers), KJ Hamler (Broncos), John Reid (Texans), Cam Brown (Giants), and Robert Windsor (Colts).

The 1987 NFL Draft was the best year for Penn State football. After coming off a National Championship win over the Miami Hurricanes, 13 players were drafted. LB Shane Conlan was drafted 8th overall to the Buffalo Bills and RB D.J. Dozier was selected 14th overall to the Minnesota Vikings.

Since 2006, the Nittany Lions have had at least one player drafted for 15 straight years. 62 players during that 15-year span that sported the blue and white had their name called.

Make sure to tune in to the 2021 NFL Draft to see which Penn State players get to be a part of the rich history of NFL players to come out of Happy Valley.

Today is an incredibly important day for a handful of former Nittany Lions looking to make the move to the NFL. Today is Penn State’s pro day, with eight players participating in the event as NFL scouts and coaches observe what they have to offer.

While linebacker Micah Parsons is pretty much locked in to being a first-round pick and Jayson Oweh and Pat Freiermuth are definitely going to be drafted in the upper half of the draft, the pro day event could be even more important for players like Lamont Wade and Steven Gonzalez.

How to watch Penn State football’s 2021 pro day

Also discussed in today’s episode is a story posted on 247 Sports this week circling one game on each preseason top 25 team’s schedule. It isn’t much of a surprise which school appears to be Penn State’s biggest opponent this season. But what top 25 teams might have Penn State circled on their schedule?

We also touch on the Big Ten’s announcement from Wednesday regarding attendance policies for the remainder of the spring sports schedules, and where we could be heading for the fall around the conference and at Penn State.
